The Penn Stated podcast returns with discussion about expansions, and contractions. The Board of Trustees' approval to spend up to $690 million on the long-awaited renovation of Beaver Stadium dominates the discussion between hosts Donnie Collins and Sam Fremin of The Scranton Times-Tribune, with both expressing concerns over the project and also recognizing its necessity. In the second half, they talk about Penn State baseball's sudden rise to prominence over the past week in the Big Ten tournament, signaling a potential turnaround for the program under first-year coach Mike Gambino. The longer you go without rules, the harder it will be to make rules. The NCAA might learn that lesson the hard way as it pursues sanctions against Tennessee for alleged recruiting violations stemming from a collective that works closely with athletes at the university in the Name, Image, Likeness realm. It's a story that affects all of college football, including Penn State, as collectives play a bigger and bigger role in attracting star athletes to the universities they choose to represent, promising cash and business opportunities. On this week's episode of the Penn Stated podcast, host Donnie Collins talks about what the Tennessee case could mean for Penn State and other major programs. But he also brings in a special guest - legendary Scranton Times-Tribune high school sports beat writer Joby Fawcett - to discuss the positives and negatives of NIL as it trickles down into the high school ranks. We know how it's likely affecting some athletes now. But, will high school sports exist in its current form in a decade or so after NIL gets done changing them, and the attitudes of high school-aged athletes and their parents?Donnie also delves into the postseason all-star games in college football, where a handful of Penn State's draft-eligible players are looking to make names for themselves in front of NFL scouts. Which one has impressed Donnie the most over the last week? That answer might surprise you.To contact Donnie, drop an email at dcollins@scrantontimes.com, or send him a message on Twitter @PennStateTT.Listen and subscribe on Apple podcastsListen and subscribe on Google podcastsListen and subscribe on Spotify

The New York Yankees split their series with the Houston Astros, and they split mostly because their starting rotation is in shambles. On Friday, Luis Severino had another rough start, and the Yankees lost 7-3. Nestor Cortes came back on Saturday and pitched four strong innings, the bullpen came in and shut down Houston's lineup for the rest of the game, and the Yankees won 3-1 on Sunday. Carlos Rodón struggled again and left with an injury after only pitching two and two-thirds innings and giving up five runs. Can the Yankees do anything to help the rotation? We discuss. Then we talk to Conor Foley of the Scranton Times-Tribune about Clayton Beeter for Minors Monday. Is he ready for primetime? And finally, we preview the White Sox series, which begins Monday night with Gerrit Cole facing off against Dylan Cease. We make bold predictions and discuss the weekend the White Sox had against the Guardians. Specifically the brouhaha between José Ramírez and Tim Anderson. Brandon, Chris, Kevin, and Mailman are joined by Donnie Collins of the Scranton Times-Tribune to talk lessons and observations from the OSU game. Brandon wants more accountability for the defense; Mailman expects improved player development, and Chris wraps things up by risking a bold prediction.Vote in the Creamery Fantasy Flavor LeagueDonnie Collins on Ohio State-Penn State and taking stock of the beatdown: https://accessnepa.com/uncategorized/psu-ohio-state-four-more-quarters-taking-stock-of-a-beatdownHOSTED BY: Brandon Noble, Mike Herr, Kevin Horne, Chris BuchignaniGUEST: Donnie Collins
One of the biggest games on Ohio State's 2020 schedule is now just days away. The Buckeyes are getting ready to head east to face Penn State on Saturday night in Happy Valley. The matchup represents one of the biggest hurdles for Ryan Day's team to clear on the way back to the Big Ten Championship Game and a potential return to the College Football Playoff. Donnie Collins of the Scranton Times-Tribune joins host Tom Orr to provide an in-depth run through what Buckeye fans can expect to see from the Nittany Lions on Saturday. How badly does the loss of running backs Journey Brown and Noah Cain to injury hurt James Franklin's team, and how much of that loss can the quarterback run game make up?With Micah Parsons opting out and Jesse Luketa sitting the first half following a targeting penalty, how short-handed is Linebacker U at its signature position? Does the Lions' defense have the talent in the back end to defend Ohio State's stable of wide receivers? And what's the more likely path to a Penn State win: scoring more than 30 points or holding Ohio State under 30?

Joe Biden officially announced that he is running for the nation's top job on Thursday. As candidate number 20, he is entering a historically crowded race. Does he have what it takes to stand out from the pack? We check in with two campaign reporters, Juana Summers from The Associated Press, and Annie Linskey from The Washington Post, who tell us about what voters seem to be looking for when trying to choose between the candidates. For our Biden digest, we turn to Mike Memoli, of NBC News, who has been following Biden's career on the national stage for over a decade. He explains what he thinks we can expect from Biden’s third attempt to reach the highest office. Borys Krawczeniuk, of the Scranton Times-Tribune, gives us the view from Biden's hometown. And Aimee Allison, the founder of the political group She the People, says he has some serious obstacles to overcome if he wants to do well with black women voters. Plus, Bloomberg's Joshua Green has been out on the campaign trail trying to gauge where voters stand on the issue of impeachment. His verdict? They are pretty ambivalent. Amy's Final Take: After the 2016 election, the media was criticized for spending too much time in D.C. absorbed in our Twitter bubbles. Voters were telling us the story of the election, but we weren’t listening to it. Three years later, the Washington, D.C. and Twitter echo chambers are obsessed with talk of "impeachment" and "Russia" yet that’s not what voters or presidential candidates are talking about out in the states. My sense, from listening to voters and to the reporters who are on the ground covering them, is that Democratic voters are more pragmatic than prescriptive. The grassroots demand for Congress to start impeachment just doesn't seem to be there. Now, should Trump win re-election, I'd expect that pragmatism to give way to all out panic and push-back. That may change, but for now, we should take the lessons of 2016 to heart and stop trying to make the narrative fit neatly into a box we have already pre-built. The race for 2020 has a LONG way to go. The best way to understand where it’s headed is to watch it unfold at its own pace, not the one being set by cable TV.

Blood, Bone and Marrow: A Biography of Harry Crews (University of Georgia Press) On what would have been Harry Crews' 81st birthday, we celebrate the lasting literary legacy of one of the most singular voices in American letters. In 2010, Ted Geltner drove to Gainesville, Florida, to pay a visit to Harry Crews and ask the legendary author if he would be willing to be the subject of a literary biography. His health rapidly deteriorating, Crews told Geltner he was on board and would even sit for interviews and tell his stories one last time. “Ask me anything you want, bud,” Crews said. “But you’d better do it quick.” The result is Blood, Bone, and Marrow, the first full-length biography about one of the most unlikely figures in 20th Century American literature, a writer who emerged from a dirt-poor South Georgia tenant farm and went on to create a singularly unique voice of fiction. With books such as Scar Lover, Body, and Naked in Garden Hills, Crews opened a new window into southern life, focusing his lens on the poor and disenfranchised, the people who skinned the hogs and tended the fields, the “grits,” as Crews affectionately called his characters and himself. He lived by a code of his own design, flouting authority and baring his soul, and the stories of his whiskey-and-blood soaked lifestyle created a myth to match any of his fictional creations. His outlaw life, his distinctive voice and the context in which Harry Crews lived combine to form the elements for a singularly compelling narrative about an underappreciated literary treasure. Praise for Blood, Bone and Marrow: "Harry Crews was a uniquely gifted and haunted storyteller. Novelist, journalist, memoirist he made each form his own in a way no one else had before or since. The pages that follow in this absorbing biography detail this and reach into the guts of the experiences that formed him and gave him a voice that was sad, brutal, and funny. Harry said that when it came to writing the truth about himself or anything for that matter he was not as interested in facts as he was in memory and belief."--Michael Connelly, from the Foreword "In Blood, Bone, and Marrow Ted Geltner gives us a fast-paced narrative of the crazy, violent, tragic, and memorable life of Harry Crews. Geltner knew Crews and produces a book worthy of its subject. This is an excellent first-wave biography that will be a joy to all Harry Crews fans and will be an invaluable resource for scholars and enthusiasts alike.--Taylor Hagood, author of Faulkner, Writer of Disability Ted Geltner is an associate professor of journalism at Valdosta State University, adviser to the campus newspaper, and author of Last King of the Sports Page: The Life and Career of Jim Murray.
