Unstoppable: How to Turn Limitations into Opportunities — With Ali Stroker

Ali Stroker is a trailblazing actor and advocate who joined the Little Kids, Big Hearts podcast as a guest Qook-a-lacka on our episode focused on inclusion. Today, Ali is back — out of character, as her amazing self — to talk with LKBH Host Todd Loyd about her own experiences with disability and inclusion. ❤️ She reflects on what Scarlett and Zach said on the episode: "When I hear Scarlett talking about horseback riding: It felt like she was explaining something that was so normal. And that, to me, is progress."❤️ She shares her own personal motto — Turning Limitations into Opportunities: "It can apply to somebody with a disability or not because as human beings, we have limitations. It's part of existing in the world."  ❤️ She talks about being a mom with a disability — and how being a mom in a wheelchair affects her parenting and her son's independence. ❤️ She talks about the power of "inclusive playgrounds." "I never had one inclusive playground growing up, and to this day, I still go to the playground and I have this like funny feeling in my stomach because it was a place of confusion and shame and frustration for me as a child ... Every kid deserves that freedom and that ability to play in an outdoor space with their friends."❤️ She talks about a moment when she was in 1st grade and her PE teachers included her in a lesson on "how to skip," which changed her life. "Thirty-one years later, I still remember it because it felt like I was included and someone had taken a little bit of time to get creative and make me feel like I was learning a new school too, and that I could be a part of the group in moving...And that meant everything to me, everything!" ❤️ She talked about her children's book "Ali and the Sea Stars," which was based on her own experience as a six year old being introduced to musical theater by her neighbor on the Jersey Shore. "It basically set my entire life journey of  becoming a musical theater and actress and everything that I do now." ❤️ She shares advice for kids with disabilities who want to try something new that hasn't been done before. Ali Stroker is a Tony Award winner for her role as ‘Ado Annie' in Rodgers and Hammerstein's Oklahoma! She made history as the first actor in a wheelchair to appear on Broadway in Deaf West's acclaimed revival of Spring Awakening and the first actor in a wheelchair to win a Tony. She was a series regular on the Netflix series, Echoes, and starred in the Lifetime holiday film, Christmas Ever After. Ali recurred in the final season of Netflix's Ozark and in Hulu's Only Murders in the Building. She co-wrote the novel, The Chance to Fly and its sequel, Cut Loose!; and she wrote the children's book, Ali and the Sea Stars. She was recently seen opposite Matthew Broderick in Babbitt at Shakespeare Theatre Company in DC and played 'Lady Anne' in the Shakespeare in the Park production of Richard III. She's performed her one woman show all over the country. Her mission to improve the lives of others through the arts is captured in her motto: “Turning Your Limitations Into Your Opportunities.”Learn more on our episode webpage: https://playsparkler.org/inclusion/Watch on our Youtube page: https://www.youtube.com/@LittleKidsBigHearts

On this kidventure episode, two kids — Scarlett and Zach — talk about their disabilities and share their experiences with inclusion (on inclusive playgrounds and in other contexts). As Scarlett explains, inclusion "means that everybody can play, no matter your disability or how you walk or how you roll or anything like that."After a chat on Earth, the kids and Todd travel on the colors of the rainbow to the Land of Qook-a-lackas, where they meet a Qook-a-lacka friend, Quinnly, who is trying to figure out how the Qook-a-lackas and their new neighbors, the Link-a-doos, can play TOGETHER. The Qook-a-lacka's favorite sport, Quibble, is played on the ground with a big ball — while the Link-a-doos' favorite sport, Loop-a-launch, is played in the sky with a little bouncy ball. The kids and Todd help Quinnly to brainstorm a whole new game (Quibble Launch!), which has special rules and a two tier playing field that is perfect for the new neighbors to play together!Little Kids, Big Hearts was THRILLED to be joined on this episode by guest star Ali Stroker, who plays the role of Quinnly. Ali Stroker is a Tony Award winner for her role as ‘Ado Annie' in Rodgers and Hammerstein's Oklahoma! In this episode of the How to Protect the Ocean podcast, host Andrew Luan discusses the significant decline in the population of common murres, a seabird species in Alaska, which has seen about half of its population die off—approximately 4 million individuals—since the marine heat wave known as "the blob" occurred from 2014 to 2016. The primary reason for this drastic decline is linked to the effects of the heat wave on the marine food web rather than direct thermal stress on the birds themselves. The heat wave caused shifts in the availability of food sources, leading to starvation among the murres. The study highlighted that the murres rely heavily on oceanic food supplies, and disruptions in these supplies can have devastating impacts on their populations. Research conducted by the University of Washington and the U.S. Fisheries and Wildlife Service revealed that the murre population in the Gulf of Alaska dropped by half, while in the eastern Bering Sea, the decline was even steeper at 75%. The study emphasized that without a recovery in the prey populations, the murres are unlikely to rebound, indicating a potential tipping point in the ecosystem that could prevent recovery for this species and others reliant on the same food sources. Overall, the episode underscores the importance of understanding and funding research on marine ecosystems to address the long-term impacts of climate change and marine heat waves on wildlife populations. Today we're discussing perhaps the most important 24 armed creature you quite possibly have never heard of before. Each arm has eyes, or more accurately, eyespots on the ends, and they have thousands of tube feet that they closely coordinate to move. It's a keystone species which used to have populations around 6 billion. And in a matter of a couple of years, about 5 billion of those vanished, melting away, literally turning to goo. Or at least that's how SCUBA divers and biologists described it. It almost sounds like an alien science fiction story, but I assure you, it's real.Maybe you've figured out what I'm talking about. And if you listened to my kelp forest interview with Tristin McHugh, we briefly mentioned this creature. It's the Sunflower Sea Star, an amazing creature whose disappearance has caused havoc in marine systems.I traveled 45 minutes from my house to meet with Reuven Bank and Andrew Kim from the inspiring and innovative Sunflower Star Laboratory in Moss Landing, California - right in the middle of the coast of the world famous Monterey Bay.It's a small bustling town full of marine research institutes, fishers, and ecotourism. This episode has two parts rolled into one - it's a sit-down interview, right on the Moss Landing Harbour. And then we go on a mini-field trip - a tour to learn how the Sunflower Star Lab is an important driver in recovering this incredible species. As you'll hear in the recording, we had a lot of…ambiance, from sea lions to raucous gulls patrolling the harbor, and the hums of pumps and water you'd expect in an aquaculture facility.Yes, that's my way of saying this was a bit of a challenging episode to record and edit. But despite a few rough spots, I think it turned out quite well.Reuven is chairman of the board for the Sunflower Star Lab. He's also an interpretive diving ranger for the National Park Service, though his work at the lab is independent from that. And Andrew is the lead aquaculture research technician at Moss Landing Marine Labs, a member of the Sunflower Star Lab board, offering his expertise on aquaculture to the lab. Oh, and we also had a brief discussion with Vincent Christian while he was working in the lab. As you'll here, Vincent is the reason why the lab even exists.Check the Sunflower Star Lab at sunflowerstarlab.org and on Facebook and Instagram.FULL SHOW NOTESLINKSBirch Aquarium at ScrippsPycnopodia Recovery Working GroupRoadmap to Recovery for the Sunflower Sea StarSunflower Star LaboratorySupport Us On Patreon!Buy our Merch!Music: Spellbound by Brian Holtz MusicLicense (CC BY 4.0): https://filmmusic.io/standard-licenseArtist site: https://brianholtzmusic.com Discover the Jumpstart Nature Podcast - entertaining and immersive, it's the nature fix we all need.Check past Nature's Archive episodes for amazing guests like Doug Tallamy, Elaine Ingham, and Rae Wynn-Grant, covering topics from bird migration to fungi to frogs and bats!

At just a few months, Tong Tong was diagnosed with Congenital Heart Disease (CHD)--at the time, the number #1 cause of death for children under the age of 5. She had difficulty breathing, and her lips and fingers were turning blue due to the lack of oxygen. Her parents were unable to afford the prohibitively high cost of surgery and did not know how to navigate applying to non-profits for help. A few friends heard about their plight, and joined forces to raise funds and help Tong Tong's family through the application process of various charities. Tong Tong received the surgery she needed with the kindness of everyone involved. These friends realized that there are so many other children with CHD who still needed their help. So tell us first about your books what they're about and why you got into writing kids' books. Cindy: My co-author is my best friend since the middle of 10th grade in high school, so that's over 50 years. We won't say how many. Okay. But she gets me into all kinds of stuff. She's got me into cake decorating classes and Tai Chi and. Bow making bows and all kinds of stuff. And she said one day that she would like to write children's books, but she doesn't like to do anything on her own. So what I write with her and I said, sure. Like I always do, I always go along with her Stephen: ideas. Got it. And I bet there's some stories from back in the day that we won't talk about here. Cindy: Yeah. We were with another friend and Elaine had said that she wanted to write children's books, but she didn't have any ideas. And the friend said, why don't you write about a star, a sea star that wants to be a star in the sky, cuz I'm never gonna write that book. And Elaine said, oh, that, that sounds like a good idea. But a couple of years went by, we didn't act on it, and then our friend passed away. And so when we decided that we were actually going to tackle this we thought about her idea. And so that was our first book. We dedicated it to her. That's how Sammy the Sea Star came about. Nice. And we, she was a teacher also. She taught elementary and middle school, gifted, gifted student. And I taught at the high school, so she has a lot of imaginative ideas. We draw on our past childhoods and write about things that we thought were cool when we were kids. And I'm, I was a typing teacher, so I'm a good proofreader. I know my English punctuation rules really well, and so we, we make a good combin. Stephen: Nice. Okay, so you weren't like, oh, I've always wanted to write and I finally did. It was just kinda something you came upon. Yeah, Cindy: We just decided to be something that we did after we retired, although I'm still working, but I'm probably going good at the end of this year. Stephen: Good for you. Okay, so you write kids books and you have an artist and you've got How may I out now?

The sunflower sea star is one of the world's largest sea stars, growing more than three feet across with two dozen limbs and a territory that once stretched from Baja California, Mexico to the Alaskan Aleutian Islands. But more than 90 percent of these marine invertebrates have been wiped out, and can now mainly be found in the cooler coastal waters of Washington State and British Columbia. Since 2013, sea stars along the West Coast have been decimated by a mysterious wasting disease that may be linked to climate change, and results in loss of limbs, melting tissues and death, often in just a few days. On Thursday, the National Marine Fisheries Service proposed listing the sunflower sea star as threatened under the Endangered Species Act to aid in its recovery. While there is no cure for sea star wasting syndrome, staff at the Oregon Coast Aquarium in Newport spent two years developing a treatment that has helped save stressed, injured and sick sea stars, including those afflicted with the disease. Evonne Mochon Collura, a sea jelly specialist and assistant curator of fish and invertebrates at the Oregon Coast Aquarium, joins us to share details of the treatment program.

Sarah loves the underdogs of the animal world. In 2013 she got up close with her study species for the first time. When doing an externship at the Seattle Aquarium, she witnessed a natural tragedy firsthand. Sea stars off the coast of Seattle were dying by the millions. The culprit? A disease called sea star wasting. After that, sea stars never let Sarah go again and she decided to dedicate her PhD to the impact changing ocean conditions caused by climate change have on sea stars. Sarah is a PhD candidate at the College of Veterinary Medicine and a passionate advocate of animal welfare for invertebrates. Sarah wishes to thank everyone who made her PhD research possible; she is especially grateful to the Wildlife Disease Association Wildlife Veterinary Section and American Association of Zoo Veterinarians Wild Animal Health Fund for grands which funded this research.Cat recorded the interview with Sarah at the conference of the Australasian section of the WDA (WDAA) in late Nov 2022. This week we are rebroadcasting our interview with Woman Stands Shining (Pat McCabe), originally aired in September of 2021. In the fast-paced movement of today's media, it's easy to become entangled in narratives of extinction, loss, a lack of time, and a tremendous amount of misanthropy. However, when we pause to look within the ecosystems around us we can find examples of life pushing through the most difficult of circumstances. Our more than human kin continues in defiance, refusing to cease their own lineage under the current modern paradigm of exploitation and desecration. In this week's episode, we look into a thriving life paradigm, which places a reverences for life at the center of all action, with guest Woman Stands Shining (Pat McCabe). In this expansive conversation, Woman Stands Shining coalesces topics of Indigenous sovereignty, land back, how gender and consent behave in different paradigms, and the vital importance of moving out of modernity's obsession with intellectualism as the primary way of knowing, into a powerful call to choose a timeless paradigm that is life-affirming for us all.   Woman Stands Shining (Pat McCabe) is a Diné grandmother, activist, artist, and international speaker. Her primary work is proposing to the Five-Fingered-Ones, that paradigm is a choice, and pointing to Indigenous cultures as examples that we have evidence that human beings can participate in paradigms in which we can become beings capable of causing all life to thrive.  Music by The Range of Light Wilderness, Violet Bell, and Sea Stars.  Visit our website at forthewild.world for the full episode description, references, and action points.
