This is one of the finest 16-bit platforms I've ever played. One of those Genesis games that makes me jealous as a Super Nintendo kid. You control a possum in a suit of armour with a sword and a rocket pack, and you fight pigs as you travel from a village to outer space. I...well...it makes sense when you play it. Kinda. The controls are crisp and the rocket pack mechanic really takes the gameplay to the next level. Great variety between stages, an awesome soundtrack, sharp graphics, and it's the way all retro games should be: tough as fuck. I love this game. I crossed the retro podcast streams this week and asked Captain N of the Retrotopia podcast to join me, and we spent nearly an hour singing the praises of this possum and his adventures. I can say this game is a lock for my top 10 Genesis games now, and it's knocking on the door of the very exclusive top 5 club... And before we rocket away, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week, someone asks what my favourite part of RTG is? Are there too many rouge-like card combat games these days? And if I could host one major TV gameshow, which would it be? Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! This one features 3 of my all-time favourite Genesis games: Shining Force, Gunstar Heroes, and Streets of Rage 2. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

But this week, we're actually covering of the rare Sega games I played as a kid. The sexy as hell shooter known as Vectorman. There were a few games on the Sega side of the console wars back in the 90's that genuinely made me jealous as a Super Nintendo kid, and Vectorman was one of them. I absolutely adored the way it looked (still do), and it was a surprisingly competent platformer/shooter as well. You play as a bot made out of orbs, and you spend the game running, gunning, an transforming as you take on other robots made of orbs. And you blow up a lot of TVs, too. It's a fairly difficult game, but one that gets pretty beatable with a little practice. I think it's a must-play game in the Genesis library. My guest this week was the guy that suffered my wrath on the Ecco the Dolphin episode, my pal Andre. We got into how good Vectorman looks, how decently it plays, he frustratingly tough it can be, and of course, we made a bunch of balls jokes. And before we talk balls, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week, someone asks if I could buy one gaming studio, who would it be? What's on my Mt. Rushmore of video game collection items? And what gaming mechanic has become wayyyy too over played? Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! This one features 3 Genesis platformers: Quackshot, Rocket Knight Adventures, and Dynamite Headdy. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

In this episode of the SNES Podcast, we look at a very unique game -- Sparkster! This game is the SNES version -- but not a port -- of Konami's famous Rocket Knight Adventures for the Genesis and also not the same game as the sequel on that system (as if the naming scheme wasn't confusing enough.) We discuss this game and how it differs from the Genesis entries, where you can get the game today, and how it holds up. Any questions, comments, etc can be left on our FB page or e-mailed to thesnespodcast@yahoo.com and as always thanks for your support! The SNES Podcast is proud to be part of the Geekade network! But these days, I'm a fan of both. And they go together like peanut butter and chocolate with Castlevania Bloodlines, which is now one of my favourite Genesis games! I've really grown to appreciate the Castlevania series, and for my money, these games are at their peak on 16-bit hardware. It's safe to say that Super Castlevania IV and Bloodlines are now my favourite Vania games. This one looks great, plays great, and of course, it's tough; just the way I like my retro titles. Ye olde Bradley McCue returns to the show this week, both to talk about how much he loves this game, and to try to explain the story to me, because I'm absolutely fucking lost. Great game, killer guest, mediocre podcast. Why WOULDN'T you listen?! And before we hunt vampires or something, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week, someone asks for advice with some rare items in their game collection. Will we ever cover PS4/XBox One games on RTG? And with all these layoffs, is the video game market crashing?? Show Notes It's time once again for the 10 20 30 40, where Dan and Kris look back at notable game releases this month from 10, 20, 30, and 40 years ago. The first chunk of the year has been pretty lackluster overall, but this month brings a number of actual all-time classics like Street Fighter II: Turbo, Jr. Pac-Man, Rocket Knight Adventures, and more! But can they make it through the whole thing before Kris has to run off to the bathroom, leaving Dan to vamp for a mysteriously long time? Probably not, but there's only one way to find out, right? Plus, Kris is on a mission to polish off Tears of the Kingdom before Sea of Stars comes out, Vampire Survivors is awesome in multiplayer, Dan encounters some annoying stuff in Marvel Snap, and a whole lot more! We're Sega Maniacs, Maniacs, that's for sure, and we're podcasting like we never have before. Actually, it's quite similar to how we have before. Get in the car, loser. We're going to Silent Hill. That's right, the town littered with horrific nurse monsters and murderous enthusiasts of Egyptian architecture inspired headwear. I think we do a fair job of detailing the video game origins, to the Playstation game and its many easter eggs. Did you ever notice the street names referred to virtually every major horror and sci-fi author for a bajillion years from Stephen King to Ray Bradburry? We even get into unused material on the game disc that was planned, but never used. Shot under the name "Centralia," this film was directed by Christophe Gans. You may recall that Gans also wrote and directed HP Lovecraft's Necronomicon and Brotherhood of the Wolf. I was surprised to learn that the co-writer of Pulp Fiction, Roger Avery, wrote this film. Don't worry, this was before his prison sentence, which we get into! All of the music in the film, aside from one song, is derived from Akira Yamaoka's original soundtrack for the game. He also did the music for the incredibly fun possum video game, Rocket Knight Adventures. Because of this, I like to pretend these games are in the same universe. Our protagonist is Radha Mitchell (Pitch Black, Man on Fire, The Crazies) as Rose Da Silva. She is on a quest to figure out the reason for her adopted daughter's sleepwalkings and ramblings about Silent Hill. Sean Bean (007 Golden Eye, Lord of the Rings, Equilibrium) plays Christopher Da Silva. He was so good in the role, they actually added several scenes with him in it, so he could get more screen time. And before you ask, no- he does not die in this film, unlike Game of Thrones and nearly everything else. Laurie Holden plays Cybil Bennett, and damn she is boring. The character Cybil is a playable character in the Japan-exclusive GameBoy Advance text-adventure remake of the game, Silent Hill Play Novel. Jodelle Ferland is Alessa Gillespie, the sleepwalker who is kinda like a reincarnation of a ghost from a girl killed by religious zealots. She went on to voice the Little Sisters in the BioShock video game series. This week's "Hidden Track" is Doomstress with their song, Sleep Among the Dead. If you like the tune, you can find their music and merch at: www.doomstress.bandcamp.com. They were also on the new Women of Doom compilation vinyl from Desert Records. Freedom Planet, the 2014 indie darling developed by Stephen Diduro (aka Strife) set the bar for games influenced by Sonic the Hedgehog and Rocket Knight Adventures. But a Sonic style game needed a Sonic styled composer...or did it? Enter Leila "Woofle" Wilson, who brought her love of JRPGs, Funk and New Jack Swing to compliment Strife's more Mega Man focus, along with Shane Ellis aka Blue Warrior's composition assistance, the three created the exciting soundtrack of Freedom Planet! Today, we're honored to have Leila Wilson join us for a special interview where we find out the origin story of the game, hear Leila gush about her VGM influences, and learn all about Lilac, Carol and Milla's fun and frantic journey!
After being told we constantly nag on the Sega Genesis system for it's... interesting sound, we picked a game this week that at the very least has a very solid soundtrack, Rocket Knight Adventures! This was one of Konami's Genesis exclusives, and it led to several sequels that were on multiple platforms, but how well does does Sparkster's initial journey hold up? We played through the game to find out. Also discussed, some new Switch downloadable titles, the just announced Konami classic collections, and most importantly -- Taco Bell orders. Want to get right to the game? Then charge up your attack, and rocket over to the 11 minute mark! __________________________ If you enjoy this podcast, why not write a review wherever you download it from? Welcome one and all to 2018 with Video Game Grooves! In our inaugural episode for the year, we invite Aaron Hamel from ShiptoShore Media to kick things off! Ganbatte everyone and all that! We begin our game-music-on-vinyl-records journey with the news since our last show! A few new records are available, and even a couple of curious releases! How hard will our collective wallet be hit in the new year? Our features section kicks off with Bastion by Supergiant Games! This acclaimed 2011 soundtrack saw its vinyl release last year, and Jeremy explores the themes of restoration and "swampy guitar", and invents a super-hyphenated genre classification to finally place the Darren Korb score where it belongs on the shelf in our hearts. For our second pick, Aaron helps us explore the oft-overlooked music of Rocket Knight Adventures, for the Genesis/Megadrive. This release from ShiptoShore PhonoCo surprises us as some of the best music we didn't know the system could produce, alongside VGG's previously-featured greats like Gunstar Heroes! Anybody know where we can find a decent Sparkster plushie?? For our third segment we nail down our new year's resolutions as they pertain to game music, vinyl records, and game music on vinyl records. The whole crew express the ways they want to improve their relationships with their turntables and where applicable, their work at their respective music labels. We'd love to hear yours too! Rocket Knight Adventures came out during the apex of Genesis/Mega Drive game design. Developed by Konami with roots in the Contra franchise, this cute possum with armor and a jet pack was a charming action platformer. Unfortunately given main character Sparkster's mascot status and the trends on consoles at the time, this is probably one of the best games you've never played.
