John Cale's enigmatic masterpiece, Paris 1919, appeared at a time when the artist and his world were changing forever. It was 1973, the year of the Watergate hearings and the oil crisis, and Cale was at a crossroads. The white-hot rage of his Velvet Underground days was nearly spent; now he was living in Los Angeles, working for a record company and making music when time allowed. He needed to lay to rest some ghosts, but he couldn't do that without scaring up others. Paris 1919 was the result. In John Cale's Paris 1919 (Bloomsbury, 2025), Mark Doyle hunts down the ghosts haunting Cale's most enduring solo album. There are the ghosts of New York - of the Velvets, Nico, and Warhol - that he smuggled into Los Angeles in his luggage. There is the ghost of Dylan Thomas, a fellow Welshman who haunts not just Paris 1919 but much of Cale's life and art. There are the ghosts of history, of a failed peace and the artists who sought the truth in dreams. And there are the ghosts of Christmas, surprising visitors who bring a nostalgic warmth and a touch of wintry dread. With erudition and wit, Doyle offers new ways to listen to an old album whose mysteries will never fully be resolved. Mark Doyle is a Professor of History at Middle Tennessee State University, USA. He is the author of The Kinks: Songs of the Semi-Detached (2020), Communal Violence in the British Empire (Bloomsbury 2016), and Fighting Like the Devil for the Sake of God (2009). In the most rambly episode ever, I present various topics, recorded separately, such as a Tale of eBay Horror rerun*, contemplating paying someone to edit my audiobooks, talking about a book called "Curse of the Reaper," the results of a writing contest, Grimace, the second Spider-verse movie, a presentation of "Mystery of the Semi-Detached" by E. Nesbit, self-doubt in my own abilities, and hey, why not more Grimace talk?To download the episode, just Right-Click HERE.To support me on Patreon, click HERE.Logo by Gino "Jive Topics" Moretto.*Originally, this was "Four Topics In Search..." but when I realized the eBay Horror was a repeat, I added the Nesbit story to make up for it. The Semi-Detached House by Emily Eden audiobook. If you're a Jane Austen fan, you'll enjoy Emily Eden's comic novels of manners, The Semi-Detached House (1859) and The Semi-Attached Couple (1860). At the opening of The Semi-Detached House, the beautiful (but rather petulant) Lady Blanche Chester, newly married and pregnant, is being installed in a suburban house while her husband is away. Her encounters with her neighbors, and the intrigues of the neighborhood, soon come to absorb and annoy her. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

In this week’s episode, Amy and Kim discuss Emily Eden (1797-1869) and two of her novels, The Semi-Attached Couple and The Semi-Detached House. A Jane Austen fan herself, Eden’s two novels are about what happens after the “happily ever after” in an Austen novel -- In fact, some critics have called her the 19th century’s answer to Austen. Find out if she lives up to that claim, and learn more about her fascinating life hobnobbing with aristocrats and the leading political figures of the age in England and India.

Mark Doyle is a professor of history at Middle Tennessee State University. A native of Oklahoma who now resides in Nashville, he has lived for extended periods in New Orleans, Boston, and Ireland. His latest book is The Kinks: Songs of the Semi-Detached. Mark and Colin talk about the historical and sociological background of the Kinks' golden period in the late 1960s and early 1970s. More specifically, they discuss how the brilliant and multi-faceted Ray Davies, the Kinks' main songwriter and singer, commented on the profound changes going on around him. In the process, he and the Kinks made classic albums such as Something Else, Village Green Preservation Society, Arthur, Lola, and Muswell Hillbillies. Mark and Colin also examine the challenges of doing a different kind of writing, namely, how historians trained in a doctoral program examine a pop culture subject. As Mark sees it, he didn't want to write a typical history of the band. And while interviewing someone in the Kinks would have been fun and exciting, talking to a famous musician won't necessarily add much to your story. The Kinks were a distinctly British band, but the subjects Ray Davies analyzed--urban renewal, alienation and economic anxiety, the rise of the suburbs, the expansion of the welfare state--were relatable to Americans, too. Ray's songs did not emerge in a vacuum. His art was born amid the changes going on in the postwar world all around him.
Producer/Host: Gina Logue Guest: Dr. Mark Doyle Synopsis: Dr. Mark Doyle, a professor of history, discusses his book "The Kinks: Songs of the Semi-Detached," an examination of the iconoclastic British rock band through socioeconomic and historical lenses.
Tosh and Kimley discuss “The Kinks: Songs of the Semi-Detached” by Mark Doyle. The Kinks are one of the iconic British Invasion bands whose music has only gotten better with time. They were quintessentially British and proud of their working-class roots which came across in their music. Doyle explores the time and place that nurtured The Kinks’ creative impulse specifically examining their North London neighborhood, the British class structure and the social upheaval of the postwar era. There’s a lot of conflict and tension surrounding this band and “Semi-Detached” is the perfect way to kick this off. Theme music: "Behind Our Efforts, Let There Be Found Our Efforts" by LG17
The Kinks are one of the great rock bands of the 20th century, and like all artists, they reflect the times and places they've inhabited. In this episode, we speak with Mark Doyle about his excellent new book The Kinks: Songs of the Semi-Detached (Reaktion Books, 2020) and how the band, their origins, and Ray Davies' lyrics can teach us a lot about both the real and imagined spaces of mid-20th Century England. Dr. Mark Doyle is Professor of History at Middle Tennessee State University, where he specializes in the history of the British Empire. His research and teaching have won him numerous awards including the Stansky Book Prize (co-winner, 2017) and MTSU's Outstanding Teacher Award (2014-15). Ben once described him as “the Patton Oswalt of academic twitter,” so we recommend you follow him there at @DrMarkDoyle. The Road to Now is part of the Osiris Podcast Network. Crowds, Selves, and Various Forms of Detachment While we can’t know each other completely, we’re obsessed with guessing and modern literature provides numerous examples. Jesse interviews Dr. John Plotz, Professor of Victorian Literature at Brandeis University and author of “The Crowd” (2000), “Portable Property” (2008) and “Semi-Detached” (2017). For Plotz, crowds, keepsakes, politics, and novels represent some of the ways we grapple with how our own inner lives relate to those of others. We can also find ourselves estranged from ourselves during an aesthetic experience. Jesse and John discuss crowds, Baudelaire, the political dimensions of Victorian literature, public and private spaces, mementos, cave paintings, intention, how we give private objects meanings, our relationship with history, the line between reality and fiction, the psychology of the modern novel, and finally, H.G. Wells and why science fiction is so cool. What We’re Reading John recommends “The Absolute at Large” by Karel Čapek Music “Think” by Lee Rosevere Bookings is recorded at the University of King’s College by Mark Pineo and produced by Paul MacKay and Jesse Hiltz.
