In this special bonus episode of Genre Exposure, Jason is on vacation and Dustin cracks open the J-Horror Journal once more. We pick back up right where we left off with Death Forest 4 directed by Yasutake Torii. We're chugging right along and that means more of what you can expect from this franchise by now: more Kazuki trying and failing to unravel the mystery of Yoshie and the denizens of the Death Forest. This entry picks up heavy on the remaining plot threads from the prior film and gives us a continuation of the series' vague Crystal Lake-like metaphor of having the action go down nearby to the central location where everything ought to be happening. Checking off the boxes of obvious horror sites, we get a hospital this time. But before all that, Dustin recounts some of his recent watchings, including a dip back into the Shaw Bros box set and a look at The Creep Tapes. All that and more! We're back after a brief hiatus with another geographically centered mini-series, this time focused on the movies of Hong Kong! And to kick it off, Nick is finally making good on his longstanding threat to talk Shaw Bros: it's Lau Kar-Leung's THE 36TH CHAMBER OF SHAOLIN (1978)!36th Chamber is an enormous tentpole in kung fu film, and one of the first post-Bruce Lee HK movies to break through to international audiences. We're probing into what made it so influential, how it established training tropes, and we opine on why it's a perfect introduction to the genre. We're also talking about Lau Kar-Leung's approach to martial arts as a self-improvement tool, Gordon Liu and Shaw Bros' outsized impact outside of the kung fu world, and the Kill Bill siren. And yes, we mention Bruce Lee.But who are the Shaw Bros exactly? Nick's here with a quick rundown of their history and how there's literally a place called Movietown. We also determine what chambers would absolutely wreck us personally.Next time: we're agreeing with Michelle Yeoh and Cynthia Rothrock in Corey Yuen's YES MADAM (1985)!
Hello, Kaiju Lovers! The most cited man on MIFV, John LeMay, returns for his all-but-mandatory-at-least-once-a-season appearance to discuss the second Shaw Bros. film we've covered this season: Mighty Peking Man. This infamous cult classic was a favorite of director Quinton Tarantino, and it's easy to see why: it's sleazy yet weirdly artsy. It feels like an exploitation film at points—especially with the gorgeous Evalyn Kraft running around in nothing but a goatskin bikini—but the special effects are remarkably well-executed thanks to Keizo Murase. Since it's John's favorite “Kongsploitation” movie, that is the first of two Toku Topics this episode, with the other being the Peking Man fossil, which partly inspired this flick. For full show notes, including a bibliography of sources, check out this episode's post on the MIFV website: https://monsterislandfilmvault.com/index.php/2024/02/17/episode-84-john-lemay-vs-mighty-peking-man/. Hello, Kaiju Lovers! In MIFV's fourth season premiere, Nate is joined by Daniel DiManna (Godzilla Novelization Project) to discuss competently-made insanity: Super Inframan. Yes, it barely qualifies as “kaiju,” but Nate needed an excuse to talk about it (again). To call it a hyper-caffeinated fusion of Shaw Bros. trademark martial cinema and Japanese henshin heroes would be an understatement. Believe it or not, this bonkers movie has connections to both Kamen Rider and Mystery Science Theater 3000! Nate and Danny also discuss “Bruceploitation” and the Muppets in regards to this movie. The Toku Topic is, naturally, kung-fu cinema. READ "JIMMY'S NOTES" ON THIS EPISODE: https://monsterislandfilmvault.com/index.php/2024/01/17/2081/. Outline of Introduction to Hong Kong Film Industry Podcast Part 4 About this series of podcasts, please check here. Part 4: Left-Right Opposition and the Competition of the Two Titans In this fourth episode of the podcast, we have two segments, each focusing on the following topics; 4.1 The Rise and Fall of MP & GI 4.2 The Rise of Shaw Bros Outline: Mandarin Film Industry's Progress: From Left and Right Opposition to the Competition of Industry Titans “Shaw Bros” and “MP & GI” In the 1950s, Hong Kong's Mandarin Film Industry's right and left parties became increasingly diametrically opposed. Leftist companies like the “Great Wall Movie Enterprise” and “Phoenix Motion Enterprise” received support from the leaders of the Chinese Communist Party. While companies that appeared more rightist included “Hsin Hwa Motion Pictures” and “Asia Film Company.” Amongst them were companies that sought to enter and endear themselves to the Taiwanese market, including the “Shaw Bross” and “MP & GI” (also known as Cathay Organization). Although their political stances were seemingly oppositional, both sides had for a long period where few films openly displayed any political messages-- most movies filmed were commercial features focused foremost on entertainment. The superiority of Mandarin films gradually became clear through the abundant wealth and influence of Singaporean and Malaysian capital put into companies like “MP & GI” and “Shaw Brothers.” “MP & GI” use of modern and fashionable films were heavily praised. “Shaw Bros,” on the other hand, was at first less favorably received. Run Run Shaw later acquired a large amount of Singaporean capital to build theaters, produce colored films, raise the manufacturing quality of the industry, and successively established Huangmei Opera and Wuxia as two of the largest film trends. By the 1960s, these companies were superior within the Mandarin Film Market, and their impact and influence could also be seen in the Cantonese Film Market. ⭐4.2:The Rise of Shaw Bros⭐ In the fourth episode, the second section, we primarily discussed: What was the origin of the Shaw Bros Group?Regarding the Shaw Bros Cantonese film division, which important Cantonese-speaking stars were active in its early days? What were the significant Cantonese-language films? Why was Patricia Lam Fung jokingly called the "Queen of Gestures" early on?When did Shaw Bros. begin to make significant strides?Shaw Bros possessed a robust infrastructure (film studios, capital, market), significantly elevating the production quality of Hong Kong cinema. Unfortunately, they had weak creative capacity. How did they address this deficiency? What were the distinctive features of the Shaw Bros' films? What kind of ideal world did they portray?Li Han-Hsiang was a pivotal figure at Shaw Bros. Why did he eventually leave the studio? The quest for another Star Wars gets weird as we look at early 80s 3-D boom film SPACEHUNTER: ADVENTURES IN THE FORBIDDEN ZONE (1983), Stewart Raffill's off-the-wall comedy THE ICE PIRATES (1984), and Shaw Bros. insane sci-fi/comedy/kungfu/thriller/monster/musical/romance film TWINKLE TWINKLE LITTLE STAR (1983). And yes, we promise that last film is Star Wars related.
Having remoulded the crime movie genre with his first three films Tarantino followed it up with this rip roaring tale of revenge following "The Bride" a character created with his leading lady Uma Thurman on the set of Pulp Fiction. Spread across two films with Vol. 1 paying homage to his love of Eastern cinema drawing on inspiration from Shaw Bros. movies and Pop samurai cinema like Lady Snowblood and Lone Wolf and Cub. With Vol. 2 he transfered his vision into a modern western. We look at the films which inspired his vision, how the soundtrack has lived on through reality TV as well as some insightful differences in the translation plus more.
In this episode, we return to our vault of listener suggestions to cool down from our focus on made-for-tv movies. Echoing back to our block on Westerns and Dustin's recent foray into Hong Kong cinema, we're taking a look at Jiang Wen's Let the Bullets Fly from 2010. Nothing but the most erudite and sophisticated discussion about the films of the Shaw Bros related to the Romance Of The Three Kingdoms, with Clive "Rod" Davies, Darren "Wang" Jones and Nick "Tiny Todger" Sheehan.
Elwood and Stephen look back at the classic Michelle Yeoh movie "Magnificent Warriors" in which she plays a bi-plane flying, whip cracking mercenary for hire who finds herself caught up in the battle to save the city of Corn from the Japanese army who plan to build a chemical warfare plant. This week's episode is both melancholy and nostalgic. John talks about comic book legend Neil Adams passing at the age of 80. Warner Bros. keeps pushing back all of their movies until the end of 2023. Ezra Miller gets arrested again. Hey everyone! We had to do an episode on the 2020 live-action remake of Mulan as our Recent Review. We were obligated to, per the imaginary contract we have with our future selves. It's complicated. But first! We cover news about David Fincher's latest movie, Venture Bros. being canceled, and Robert Pattinson catching the 'Rona. We cover Lovecraft Country's latest episode, "A History of Violence", in our A Trip Down Lovecraft Lane segment, and hot damn it was an interesting one. Lastly, our Geriatric Cinematic is one of the greatest Kung Fu films ever, Come Drink With Me. We implore you to watch it so you can breakdown the classic Shaw Bros. movie with us. Next week is a journey through WTF moments and horrible relationships. Our Recent Review will be Netflix's I'm Thinking of Ending Things and we'll see if we can figure what the hell is going on in Charlie Kaufman's latest film. Continuing with our Kung Fu-bruary series (which was picked by you, the listeners!), tonight's movie is Men from the Monastery (a.k.a. Disciples of Death)! I initially picked this movie because of just one scene that a friend told me about during a monthly film discussion - I knew absolutely nothing else about this movie other than that one scene. And while it is certainly a memorable scene, this movie was so much more awesome than I expected! There are certainly some flaws (most notably, pacing issues and the fact that the plot does tend to get a bit lost in the action....the awesome, awesome action), but the impressive fight scenes, serious plot (once it gets around to it), and characters that you genuinely care about...it's no wonder why Men from the Monastery (while not perfect) is one of Chang Cheh's stand-out films in the Shaw Bros. catalog!! So, join The Gargyle and The Chimerican as we discuss why we love Men from the Monastery as much as we do!! Since February is both Black History Month as well as Women in Horror Month, each episode in our Kung Fu-bruary series will start with segments honoring African Americans in cinema, as well as women in horror. For tonight's episode, we honor Dope and Dayveon - two coming-of-age movies with drastically different tones (but, both awesome in their own right!!). For Women in Horror Month, we honor Slumber Party Massacre and Stacy Title, director of... among other things... Hood of Horror (for an additional tie-in with Black History Month) and The Last Supper. Also, as we've done on the last few episodes, we continue to highlight the Chattanooga Film Festival - April 11-14. Tonight, we highlight that Mallory O'Meara's book, The Lady from the Black Lagoon, is available for pre-order on Amazon! We also remind you of the programming that has been announced so far: Joe Bob Briggs, Everything is Terrible, Shock Waves Podcast, Junkfood Cinema Podcast, a screening of The Creature from the Black Lagoon, and a presentation by author Mallory O'Meara. As a reminder, the CFF fundraiser to be able to provide classes and workshops for free during the festival is still going on! The Mighty Peking Man (1977) begins a brand new APE-ril in Shaw Bros fashion! Formed way back in the days of silent film, two of the four Shaw brothers (Run Run and Runme to be precise) turned an unspectacular business concern into the greatest of all Asian action film companies! Rivaled only much later (and to a far lesser degree) by Raymond Chow's Golden Harvest, Shaw productions were known for their revolving casts, stunning sets and costumerie and over the top mixtures of myth, fantasy and horror with some fairly grounded martial arts technique, with both barehanded and exotic weapons fighting coming into play! From core directors like horror experts Ho Meng Hua, Chih-Hung Kuei and the gothic-leaning swordplay of Chor Yuen, we'll proceed to the true masters of the genre, graceful fight coordinator cum director Lau Kar-Leung and the incomparable father of heroic bloodshed, Chang Cheh! Join us as we talk everything from Wang Yu and David Chiang to Ti Lung and the Venoms, only here on Weird Scenes! Week 26 Flying Fists and Shining Swords - speaking of Shaw Bros.

This li'l ditty was inspired by a Colourbox tune, 'Edit the Dragon.' I wanted to create something a bit faster, something danceable, and overcompensated - this tune is too fast for the floor. But, as it turns out, it's just plain wonderful for tournament forms. "Waaaaaaah!" Though I lifted these samples all by my big-boy self, I couldn't begin to say where from. Truth be told, my collection of Shaw Bros. kung fu movies is, well, embarrassing. Or spectacular, depending on your point of view. And speaking of DC's American Theater, this track is dedicated to Victor Walden, Ali Hoorford, Sean Murtagh, Doug Landoll and the rest of my Burke, VA tong. "Siu Chen!" "Sifu!" "Siu Chen!!!" For trivia buffs, the song's final seconds pay homage to cult television series, Mystery Science Theater 3000, mimicking the style of the series' closing credits. Keep circulating the tapes!
