We head out in the old west in the company of our good friend John LeMay as we search out some legends and lore of the frontier states. From the blood chilling story of the Headless Horseman of Texas, some rather terrifying vampire babies, a real life vampire flap from 1938, a ghostly black dog haunting the byways of West Virginia and the queen of vengeful ghosts, La Llorona. A big thank you to John as always for his company. Hello, Kaiju Lovers! This film was popular to hate and now it's popular to “reevaluate” it: All Monsters Attack (aka Godzilla's Revenge). Nate is joined by not one but two fellow kaiju authors to unpack this grossly misunderstood G-film: Neil Riebe (who's practically Nate's new co-host) and the most-cited man on MIFV, John LeMay. They get into the cultural contexts that birthed this strange kids' movie (starring the first Godzilla “Kenny”) set in the “real world” and not the “Showa-verse,” including urbanization, industrialization, and latchkey kids, among other things. To say the dub did this film no favors would be an understatement. Unfortunately, John had to leave early during the episode, but fortunately Neil reads a 2005 e-mail he got from a 19-year-old John for a special listener feedback segment. Prepare to have your mind changed about this film! Read "Jimmy's Notes" on this episode on the MIFV website: https://monsterislandfilmvault.com/?p=2383https://monsterislandfilmvault.com/?p=2385. Hello, Kaiju Lovers! The most cited man on MIFV, John LeMay, returns for his all-but-mandatory-at-least-once-a-season appearance to discuss the second Shaw Bros. film we've covered this season: Mighty Peking Man. This infamous cult classic was a favorite of director Quinton Tarantino, and it's easy to see why: it's sleazy yet weirdly artsy. It feels like an exploitation film at points—especially with the gorgeous Evalyn Kraft running around in nothing but a goatskin bikini—but the special effects are remarkably well-executed thanks to Keizo Murase. Since it's John's favorite “Kongsploitation” movie, that is the first of two Toku Topics this episode, with the other being the Peking Man fossil, which partly inspired this flick. We head back to the days of the wild west for another collection of creepy stories saved from obscuity by John Lemay in another of his fantastic Cowboys series of books. This time we head out across the America's looking into cases and encounters which feature a wide range of canid cryptids roaming the plains, woods and towns as every day people end up encountering creatures thought only to exist in myth. From lovelorn werewolves, to magical transformations, hell hounds and dogmen, it seems that in some cases blaming dodgy liquer or heat exhaustion just doesn't cut the mustard. Hello, kaiju lovers! Godzilla Redux continues! Nate is joined by YouTuber/author/musician/Navy sailor Alyssa Charpentier (aka AlyssaGojiGeek) for a film from his previous podcast life: King Kong vs. Godzilla. While, yes, Nate discussed a pair of related unmade films with John LeMay, today he and Alyssa compare and contrast the original Japanese version and the re-edited U.S. cut. The latter softens the satirical tone of the original and adds pointless scenes with two boring white guys who use a children's dinosaur book to prove Godzilla is a dumb brute and Kong “is a thinking animal.” This leads to some talk about the subpar Criterion Collection box set—the only way to legally watch the Japanese cut in America—and how the Japanese economic miracle influenced the film. Even Alyssa never learned this stuff in school! Before the broadcast, Nate meets with Mr. Gold and his assistant, Ms. Kawaii. They try to sweet talk him with the gift of hot chocolate and promises of advancement. Nate feigns gratitude and endures accusations of brown-nosing from Jimmy. Afterward, Nate researches late into the night at the Sekizawa Library, where he tries—and fails—to accost the AWOL EDF Mutant Ozaki. Ozaki tells Nate about the shady operations he's been investigating the last few weeks. The prologue, “Secret Business, Part 1” was written by Michael Hamilton and Nathan Marchand. The epilogue, “Secret Business, Part 2,” was written by Nathan Marchand. Hello, kaiju lovers! We enter the 1950s era of “Ameri-kaiju” to discuss a film that released the same year as the original Godzilla and inspired a subgenre and countless imitators: THEM! (yes, it's in all caps and has an exclamation point). Who better to join Nate on this than the kaiji film scholar from the state in which the film takes place, John LeMay. Thankfully, John and MIFV's intrepid producer, Jimmy From NASA, have settled their differences so he could be there. While THEM! has the trappings of a B-movie, as Nate and John explain, it has far too good a production values (it was nominated for the best special effects Oscar!) and acting to be reduced to that. The film is genuinely horrifying at points, but what may surprise many modern viewers is it is strangely progressive with its female lead, who is a competent and professional scientist and not a “scream queen.” While Nate considered researching McCarthyism since this is very much a Cold War film, he instead discusses American nuclear tests in the 1940s and 1950s. Before the broadcast, Nate gets an e-mail from Dr. Elsie Chapman, a member of H.E.A.T., after receiving an announcement that the Island's beaches are closed. She says she has something to show Nate. After the broadcast, he meets her, Dr. Mendel Craven, and Monique Dupre on the shoreline and learns the shocking reason why the beaches were closed. Check out John's books and magazines on Amazon! Hello, Kaiju Lovers! And welcome to season three of The Monster Island Film Vault! We begin 2022 with a brand new series focusing on giant monster films from the U.S.A., “Ameri-kaiju.” To launch this special occasion, Nate is joined by returning guest/YouTuber/author Ryan “The Omni Viewer” Collins (and his kaiju-muppet-thing sidekick, Snazzy, who butts heads with Nate's sidekick, the intrepid producer Jimmy From NASA) to discuss the prototypical kaiju film, The Lost World (1925). You're about to hear one of the most MIFV of MIFV episodes: literary analysis, film appreciation, witty banter, hilarious puns, and wild history. What more could you want? Before the broadcast, Nate meets Dr. Nick Tatopoulos, the leader of H.E.A.T., in the KIJU breakroom (and pronounces the man's name correctly) while fighting with the coffeemaker. Nick talks about his hostile history with the Island's new boss, Cameron Winter—and then the crooked tycoon calls them on Nate's phone! The Omni Viewer's YouTube channel. This episode's prologue, “Dr. Tatopoulos, I Presume,” was written by Nathan Marchand. Guest stars: R. Villers as Nick Tatopoulos Jack “GMan” Hudgens as Cameron Winter Additional music: “Stomp the World” by Jim Latham “Pacific Rim” by Niall Stenson Sound effects sourced from Freesound.org. Check out Nathan's spinoff podcasts, The Henshin Men and The Power Trip. We'd like to give a shout-out to our MIFV MAX patrons Travis Alexander and Michael Hamilton (co-hosts of Kaiju Weekly); Danny DiManna (author/creator of the Godzilla Novelization Project); Eli Harris (elizilla13); Chris Cooke (host of One Cross Radio); Bex from Redeemed Otaku; Damon Noyes, The Cel Cast, TofuFury, Eric Anderson of Nerd Chapel, and Ted Williams! Neil Riebe has been a lifelong fan of Japanese giant monsters since seeing King Kong vs Godzilla back in the 70s. The three-part story Godzilla vs Atragon, published in G-Fan issues #9 through #11, inspired him to write his multi-part Godzilla stories. These stories included Godzilla vs Super Allosaurus, published in G-Fan issues #15 through #17, Battle of Manazura Island, published in G-Fan #25, and Rodana, published in G-Fan #42. After Toho asked G-Fan to cease publishing fan fiction based on their characters, Neil posted subsequent stories on Fan Fiction.net. While writing kaiju fan fiction, he also wrote an article for Japanese Giants #10 and the forewords to Gfantis vs Guest Monsters anthology and John LeMay's The Big Book of Japanese Giant Monster Movies Vol. 1: 1954-1982. Matt Dennion, author of the popular Atomic Rex novels, invited Neil to contribute a short story to his Attack of the Kaiju anthology (in 2016). Since then Neil has switched from kaiju fan fiction to writing original kaiju stories.

“Hold on there, Nate!” you're saying. “This isn't Episode 50!” And you're right. I underestimated how time-consuming a project Episode 50 would be, so…it's being delayed one week. The bright side is, including this bonus episode, you're getting content from me for three Wednesdays in a row! What is this? Think of it as a “lost episode” that's outside MIFV continuity. It was a project I did for a Writing for Multimedia class when I was in grad school back in 2019. I researched copyright law since I knew I'd be covering that on a future episode of the podcast (King Kong Lives with John LeMay), so I shared my research in a creative way with this. (I got an “A,” by the way). This was originally exclusive to Patreon, and I did intend to release it before episode 50, but that was supplanted by the Monster Island Gatekeepers episode. Regardless, consider this a small gift for being patient as I finish Episode 50. Thanks! Sound effects sourced from Freesound.org. In the lead up to Godzilla vs. Kong, Byrd, Matt, and Tom are joined by author John LeMay (The Lost Films, Kong Unmade, Jaws Unmade) to talk about the original classic showdown! On this audio commentary, we talk about the surprisingly tragic way the film came about, the sad life of Willis O'Brien, the battle for Kong's rights, the rise of commercialism in post-war Japan, the aborted sequels to this film, Toho's attempts to use Kong in the Heisei series, differences between the Japanese and American versions, and more! This commentary is loaded, so whether you decide to listen to it along with the movie or by itself, we hope you enjoy the discussion!

Hello, kaiju lovers! Jimmy's (former?) flame war nemesis, tokustasu scholar John LeMay, returns to discuss the second banned film to be covered on MIFV: Prophecies of Nostradamus. This infamous disaster film—which is as different from Submersion of Japan as night is from day—was Toho's biggest hit of 1974 and features the last appearance by Takeshi Shimura in a Toho tokusatsu film, which only makes its banishment to the back of the vault all the more puzzling. Nate and John explain that the film was banned because of a 30-second scene (that wasn't even real!) featuring “Soft-Bodied Humans” that was seen as offensive to atomic bombing survivors. Nate also gives a history lesson on who the popular but misunderstood French seer Nostradamus was and his book of prophecies, which inspired this bizarre film. Yes, we know that this episode went over the Board-mandated time limit for “mini-sodes”—and we don't care! You can buy John's latest books here and here on Amazon. This week we’re delighted to be talking to John LeMay, the author of many great books ("The Real Cowboys & Aliens: Old West UFOs", "Writing Japanese Monsters", "The Big Book of Giant Japanese Monster Movies: The Lost Films") that have helped Michael get through quarantining as well as the proprietor of the Lost Films Fanzine. This Fanzine was actually a project that LeMay used as a distraction from the pandemic for himself. Michael and John discuss that fanzine, how John became a full-time author, why he’s a believer in aliens, and a legendary Lost Film - “Prophecies of Nostradamus” (1974). The main draw of the episode is our lengthy and fun discussion about “THE MCPHERSON TAPE,” (1989) the first known found-footage Horror film. Michael and John both have a lot to say so watch the film and enjoy the chat. Also, John defends Wonder Woman 84.“THE MCPHERSON TAPE” spoilers begin at 31:45“THE MCPHERSON TAPE” spoilers end at 1:03:20 #StolenFromTwitter starts out being about the 2 seconds of footage that just came out from Godzilla vs. Kong (at the time of recording) and abruptly turns into a discussion of 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters. John has never had a chance to really elaborate on a podcast about how he would fix that movie… until now! DUNKFEST this week covers the bizarre way certain media outlets covered Phil Spector’s death and WB’s bizarre marketing strategy for “Wonder Woman 84” and all their upcoming HBOMax projects. Hello, kaiju lovers! HOLY INTERVIEW, BATMAN! You've heard it being promoted for several months on the show, and now you'll get the full story. In another special bonus episode for all of you in quarantine because of coronavirus, Nathan and his intrepid producer, Jimmy From NASA, are joined by Eric Elliott, the mastermind behind the Batman Meets Godzilla fan comic. As in the Adam West Batman and the Showa Godzilla! Hear Eric talk about the secret origins of this project that's based on as an unmade film from the mid-1960s with story treatments written by Batman '66 producer William Dozier and possibly even Shinichi Sekizawa. Then the Dynamic Duo discuss the art of sequential storytelling in comics, the mystery of the Sekizawa treatment, adapting the treatment for a three-issue comic, and who would win a dance-off between Batman and Godzilla. Tune in next week for a regular episode—same kaiju time, same kaiju channel! Read the comic on its official website. Follow the series on Twitter and Facebook. Read about this unmade film in John LeMay's book, The Big Book of Japanese Giant Monster Movies: The Lost Films (Mutated Edition). Hey, guys! The Vault is now under new management—Jimmy From NASA! Yes, after starting a betting pool during Nathan's livestream of Override: Mech City Brawl Friday night and cleaning out the Monster Island Board of Directors, Jimmy became the new host of the podcast but kept Nathan on as his producer. Nathan is still a bit sore about that, as you'll hear, but Jimmy is sure he'll get over it. For his first episode, Jimmy is discussing his favorite unmade Kong film: “Space Kong.” This was a wild idea that came about in the 1960s while Merian C. Cooper was corresponding with comic book publisher Western/Gold Key Comics to produce a comic adaptation of original film and a sequel. This would've featured the children of the original characters and Carl Denham still young from finding the Fountain of Youth. Cooper suggested setting it on another planet with “King Kong reincarnated.” While Jimmy first learned of this lost project through a book written by his (first) flame war nemesis, John LeMay, he showed up that know-it-all by buying Cooper's long lost story treatment for this proposed film on eBay using his newfound wealth. Be the first to hear about it in today's episode! Here's Nathan's transcript of Episode 14. Hello, kaiju lovers! The unintentional “epic films month” continues with 1959's The Three Treasures (aka The Birth of Japan), but thankfully this episode doesn't cross the “Kurosawa threshold.” This is a religious epic in the vein of Cecil B. DeMille's The Ten Commandments except it's about Shinto. It tells the tale of Prince Yamato Takeru (played by the always awesome Toshiro Mifune), the legendary 13th emperor of Japan (who's being covered in our 13th episode…oh boy…). Interspersed throughout the film are vignettes depicting stories from Japanese mythology that parallel the prince's life. Nathan zeroes in on several of the film's story elements, including the Japanese creation myth, the Imperial Regalia of Japan, and Yamata no Orochi the eight-headed dragon. There's so much that could be said about this film, Nathan may have to do a follow-up with Rev. Mifune (no relation to Toshiro Mifune) or the guys at The Kaiju Apostle. Nathan then reads yet more feedback clarifying the Batman Meets Godzilla story treatment—or rather, the Twitter war that almost broke out over it. Speaking of which, Batman Meets Godzilla, one of the craziest yet most intriguing lost projects made famous by John LeMay's book, The Big Book of Japanese Giant Monster Movies: The Lost Films (which now has a new “mutated” edition), is being adapted into a fan-made comic book miniseries! T-SHIRT GIVEAWAY: Everyone who shares the Facebook and/or Twitter posts for this episode (or tags the show when they share it themselves) will be entered for a drawing for a Batman Meets Godzilla T-shirt. (One entry per person per social media). Entries will be taken from March 25 to March 31 at 11:59pm (EST). The winner must then send Nathan his/her shirt size, shirt color, and mailing address to be forwarded to the team at Batman Meets Godzilla. Here's a link to the Tee Public site with this epic shirt. Hello, kaiju lovers! In Nathan's continuing series of mini-sodes on films covered by Bran Scherschel on Kaijuvision Radio after Nathan left the show, he examines Ishiro Honda's overlooked 1958 kaiju film Varan the Unbelievable (or Daikaiju Baran). While Honda didn't think much of it (especially after its tumultuous production when the American TV network co-producing it pulled out), it was the first kaiju film written for Toho by the fabled Shinichi Sekizawa. The second half is a by-the-numbers monster movie, but the first half is intriguing because it touches on then contemporary issues with the burakumin, a discriminated social class in Japan. Their name means “village people” (no, not the disco band!), and they were essentially the “untouchables” of Japanese culture for centuries. When seen through that lens, this film offers more than a cool kaiju. After that, Nathan reads some listener feedback, including a letter from someone who offers some clarification on the (in)famous Batman Meets Godzilla script. Hello, kaiju lovers! Despite a slight delay thanks to MIFV mascots Goji-kun and Bro Kong hiding Nathan's laptop, the unavoidable has happened: King Kong Lives. John LeMay, author of Kong Unmade and other kaiju books, returns to Monster Island to discuss the Godzilla vs. Megalon of the Kong series—and John un-ironically likes it! This ill-fated sequel to Dino de Laurentiis's 1976 remake stars Linda Hamilton, fresh off of her star-making role in The Terminator, as a scientist who resurrects King Kong with an artificial heart…because that cures falling off of a building. Not only that, he “falls in love” with Lady Kong, a female giant gorilla, which leads to most of the Kong film tropes getting turned on their ears. Also, King Kong eats rednecks. Yep. Nathan goes full-tilt MST3K with this movie, but he riffs because he loves. That is, when he isn't mediating a conflict between John and the show's intrepid producer, Jimmy From NASA. The Toku Topic is the convoluted King Kong copyright, which came to a head twice when Universal tried to sue Dino de Laurentiis in the 1970s and Nintendo in the early 1980s. Hear all about it in the newest episode of The Monster Island Film Vault! You can buy the hardcover of John's book Kong Unmade on Amazon. Check out Jimmy's Notes on this episode! Hello, kaiju lovers! Nathan covers yet another film discussed on his former podcast, Kaijuvision Radio, by Brian Scherschell: Ishiro Honda's 1957 tokusatsu classic, The Mysterians. While Godzilla (1954) singlehanded created the kaiju and tokusatsu genres, this film arguably ushered in Toho's “golden age,” which would last for a decade. While Nathan does touch on Moguera, the special effects, and the film's many influences, the bulk of his analysis is focused on Japan's relationship with the United Nations, which the nation joined just a year before the film was released. The Mysterians expresses Japan's—and Honda's—postwar ideal of “proactive pacifism,” which it saw in the U.N. Throw in a few snarky interruptions from the podcast's intrepid producer, Jimmy From NASA, and a random cameo from a psycho-powered dictator, and it's a typical Wednesday at The Monster Island Film Vault. After that, Nathan dumps out the mailbag to read several iTunes reviews and e-mails from listeners. Speaking of which, be sure to check out the upcoming fan project, Batman Meets Godzilla, one of the craziest yet most intriguing lost projects made famous by John LeMay's book, The Big Book of Japanese Giant Monster Movies: The Lost Films (which now has a new “mutated” edition). (FYI: This was recorded before the news that 2020's Godzilla vs. Kong would be delayed). Hello, kaiju lovers! In this special “side Kong Quest” ( ), Nathan is joined by author John LeMay (who is a gentleman and a scholar) to talk about two unmade King Kong films with connections to King Kong vs. Godzilla. The first was “King Kong vs. Frankenstein,” a project that special effects legend Willis O'Brien tried to get made in the late 1950s before it ended up at Toho. Then Godzilla and Kong almost had their rematch in the 1960s with Shinichi Sekizawa's “Continuation: King Kong vs. Godzilla,” where the Eighth Wonder becomes a surrogate parent to a Japanese baby! Hear all about them in this episode! These and many other lost Kong films are covered in great detail in John's book Kong Unmade: The Lost Films of Skull Island, which is part of Monster Island's library and one of Nathan's go-to resources for the podcast. Jimmy From NASA is absent for most of this episode because Kong and Godzilla were upset that Nathan skipped their 1962 monster mash movie, so Jimmy left to calm them down with the ORCA. The thing is, Nathan covered that film on his previous podcast, Kaijuvision Radio. Here's a link if you want to listen to it before the next episode: Episode 8: King Kong vs. Godzilla (1962) (The Japanese Economic Miracle (The Golden 60s)) Also, Happy Thanksgiving from all of us here on Monster Island! Join us as we watch the film and grill John on being an uber fan of this film, as well as discuss its inception, fun trivia factoids, and more!

Byrd and Matt welcome special guest, author John LeMay ("The Big Book of Japanese Giant Monsters" book series) on the podcast to discuss kaiju movies that almost were! It seems almost as if for every Godzilla movie that got made, there are several scripts for other movies that never saw the light of day. John's newest book, "The Big Book of Japanese Giant Monsters: The Lost Films" details that very subject. We talk to John about his book, his beginnings as a writer, the process of writing the book, and why he's so drawn to the topic of unmade films. Then we also talk our favorite unmade Godzila/kaiju projects, and the ones we would have liked to see the most. We talk about infamous lost projects like Mothra vs Bagan, Godzilla vs Batman, and the proposed Toho/Hammer co-production Nessie, as well as obscurities such as Japan SOS, Bride of Godzilla, and Godzilla vs. M. We also debunk some common myths along our way. So listen up, relax and learn about the Godzilla movies we ALMOST had!
