True to the form of so many of our region's most successful property hosts, Newcastle-based Sheriden Rhodes is a wildly talented multi-tasker. As a creative child who yearned to become a journalist, she went on to do exactly that, spending her young adult years cutting her teeth working for the local newspaper before ultimately branching out as a freelance travel writer. Since then, she has written for some of the country's most celebrated media including The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, QANTAS Magazine, Good Weekend and The Robb Report. In more recent times, Sheriden and her husband Tom, along with daughter Ella, purchased, renovated and styled a potential-filled cottage in the as-yet relatively undiscovered NSW Hunter Valley hamlet of Morpeth, not far from Newcastle. Now known as the River Haus and having been open for guest stays for coming up to a year, Sheriden has repeatedly drawn on her professional background to secure a coveted array of press for the property, including a feature in Country Style's recently published 'Dream Stays' magazine, House&Garden and more. As I predicted, my chat with Sheriden a couple of weeks ago was a super enjoyable one that I know you'll get a lot out of. Please enjoy.
“I realised how important it was to connect with people. Number one, physically in person and how important a genuine, authentic connection is to me, rather than just having lots of acquaintances.Cause with yachting and everything, I met so many awesome people all around the world, but it was kind of - it felt very surface level. Like that was something I really struggled with working on yachts, cause you're always just seeing people for a fleeting moment, because your yacht's going and then someone else is on another charter and then they're just getting back and you're always just like, quickly like ‘Ships in the Night', quite literally. But that connection piece became really, really important. I wanted to connect with people and be like really good friends and have more than superficial conversations. So finding Feel Good Dips was just amazing and really instrumental in that. And that's where I kind of had another light bulb moment where I was like, connection is important to me, the cooking class is important to me. Why don't I combine the two and create conscious connection dinners.”Episode #93 of The Hope Initiative with Sheriden Hackney.I met Sheriden Hackney one Wednesday morning at Feel Good Dips in Middle Park. As I went to leave the cafe we were sat in - across from each other but in seperate conversations - I said my goodbyes to a group of strangers, and she made a comment that I looked familiar! We had a brief and nice conversation, where she mentioned she was hosting a dinner that coming Sunday, and had one ticket left! I told her that normally I visit my parents for dinner on a Sunday (the truth but also somewhat of a cover incase I let my fears of cooking with strangers get the better of me) but that I'd think about it. A few hours later, I listened to one of my favourite podcasts' latest episode titled, Serendipity. The overarching message? “Make space for serendipity”. I bought a ticket to Conscious Connections that day, made some gnocchi and told some terrible jokes that Sunday, and truly found serendipity in the space created with such care by Sheriden.I asked her to be a guest on the podcast on the way out that night, and in this conversation, it was the 3rd time we'd spoken. It was my absolute pleasure and I am very grateful to Sheriden for sharing stories, her thoughts on the world and doing all that she does! And I hope you enjoy listening.Much love, RienSHOW LINKSFollow Conscious Connections on Instagram!Read more about it and book an upcoming night via ccdinners.comFeel Good DipsSome brilliant Bundaberg Ginger Beer content on the YouTubesFollow and connect with the podcast on Instagram and Twitter.Music by Jess Fairlie.

Daylight savings time has come, the clocks have rolled back, and we have officially entered *drum roll* cuffing seasonnnn! That's right, the infamously annual cuffing season. And while some of us are ecstatic, the rest of us are rolling our damn eyes dreading another year of more of the same. But whether we're interested or not, society has synonymously named the next few months as a time for prospective bae applications to officially become wide open—just in time for holidays. On this week's Happy Hour episode, Amer and Sheriden decided to lay out the blueprint and explore exactly what this means.

Today the Happy Hour squad is getting real about the anxiety, stress and burnout that comes with their careers and dream jobs. Although black women have become advocates for therapy, healing from past traumas and childhood wounds, when it comes to our wellness in the workplace, we’ve been slow to remove our superwoman capes. Inspired by the xoNecole.com article, “I Took A Two-Month Leave From Work For My Mental Health”, in this episode, the ladies share their different encounters with anxiety while on the clock. From Necole feeling burned out from the acquisition and expansion of xoNecole and Sheriden becoming a slave to her inbox, to Amer working in a no-days-off environment with tough management to match, each story is a reminder of the importance of putting yourself first. And thanks to advice from clinical psychologist Dr. Ayanna Abrams, you’ll learn how to fill your cup instead of your to-do list.
Inspired by the recent controversy surrounding T.I. taking his daughter to the OBGYN to confirm her sexual purity, in this episode, the xoNecole Happy Hour squad tackles sexuality. The hosts gets down and dirty, sharing lessons learned and unlearned about sex from parents to first partners and beyond, and how the stigma around sexuality as it pertains to young black women has impacted their own views on sex. Sheriden keeps it real about her first masturbation experience at the age of nine, and how it opened her up to a world of pleasure and living a sex-positive life. Necole shares how a particular sexual experience left her feeling dirty, and why she wasn’t comfortable in her sexuality until her 30s. And Amer teaches mothers how to approach the topic of sex with their children (especially their daughters), and the importance of passing along accurate information on the subject.
Your 20s and 30s are filled with opinions of where you should be in life. You’re told to go to college, get married, get your dream house with a white picket fence, and bring another life into this world before your biological clock runs out. But what happens when you fail to meet society’s expectations of who you should be as a woman by a certain time? On the debut episode of xoNecole's Happy Hour podcast the hosts get real about the life shift that happens as you close out your 20s and head into your 30s. Necole reveals the struggles behind the scenes of her huge career pivot from gossip blogging to female empowerment, including almost walking away from the xoNecole site after accumulating mounds of debt and having to pay her team out of her own pocket while living in a community space in New York City. Amer opens up about leaving a domestic violence situation and how solo travel encouraged her to hit the reset button on her life, and Sheriden reflects on the past few years as managing editor of xoNecole.com, and why she’s currently experiencing imposter syndrome. If Saturn's Return is coming for you at this stage in your life– you're in for a few laughs and thought-provoking revelations from the hosts of xoNecole's Happy Hour. This Saturday marks the 50th anniversary of humankind’s first step on the moon. Only twelve people have set foot on that bright grey satellite we gaze at each night. Charlie Duke was the tenth. In this fascinating interview, you’ll hear him describe the experience in gripping detail. What's it like to be strapped into a violently shaking projectile that blasts you into space, with myriad possibilities of you dying in the process? What’s it like riding lunar buggies and playing ‘Moon Olympics’ on that powdery surface? Listen in. It’s just a shame he left his boots up there. More…
More and more of us are single. In the United Kingdom, over a third of the adult population of England and Wales are single, more than half of 25–44 year olds, and singleness is increasing in every age group with 50–64 year olds growing the fastest. Some embrace the single life with joy, others don't, and both society and church can send mixed messages about it. It's time to rethink our attitude to singleness. It is neither a curse to be pitied or a condition to be cured but a status with divine dignity. Here's why. More…
A few weeks ago I spoke at a secular conference for childless couples—an audience of men and women wondering what to do with their lives now they may not become parents. After I'd spoken, a woman approached me in tears. “I've been wondering all day why I came," she said, "but now I know. I needed to hear about Phoebe." How ironic that it was a story about an unborn child that made all the difference. But what's true of Phoebe is true of you too. More…
When you can't become who you want to be, you can still become who you're meant to be. And the person you're meant to be is so much bigger than you've dreamed. In the last few weeks I have done dozens of radio interviews across the US, UK and Australia sharing lessons like this from my book The Making of Us. Here is one of my favourites. In this far-reaching conversation, Susie Larson and I discuss the difference between primary and secondary callings, how fixating on our past achievements can blind us to what God is doing in and through us now, how to leave a legacy, and more. I hope you get as much out of this conversation as I did. More…
One surreal morning some months ago, Merryn and I woke to the news that her father had been taken to hospital following a serious car crash, and my father had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. To complicate matters, my dad is also my mother’s full-time carer, and they all live in Australia. With both parents now needing care, and us so far away, some stressful days followed. But then a man named Helmut stepped into our lives. Here's what happened next. More…
In recent days the world has lost a great hero of the faith. John Smith, legendary Australian preacher, commentator, evangelist and founder of the God's Squad Motorcycle Club has died after a long battle with cancer. He addressed the United Nations, nearly faced execution in the Philippines, and followed a radical call to reach outlaw bikers and the marginalised with the gospel. But in his early years he was anything but the radical. In this 2007 interview you'll hear how the once racist youth became a leather-clad preacher of peace, all because of the 'unconditional, indiscriminiative' love of Jesus. More…
What makes us who we are? How do we adjust when things don’t go as we hoped? Can we recover if we make a choice that’s less than perfect? In The Making of Us I explore these questions and more by telling a story of two friends walking through the rugged beauty of England’s north. May I read some of this story to you? The Making of Us releases on March 19 (April 16 in Australia) in paperback and now in audiobook too! Here are the first two chapters for you to listen to FREE. I can’t wait for you to hear the bit where God shows up in the motel room. And when I get to walk on the clouds. And when the seals start singing.
