Tift Merritt is a Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter and practitioner-in-residence at the Franklin Humanities Institute and Duke University, she has released records via Lost Highway, Fantasy Records, and Yep Roc Records, performed with Joan Baez and Kris Kristofferson, and had a (pre-podcast type) show on Marfa Public Radio about the artistic process and integrity, called The Spark. We talk with Tift about intentionally stepping back from touring and the full-time music industry, seeking the growing edge, surviving without social media, the fallacy of constant flowering, and a whole lot more.Get more access and support this show by subscribing to our Patreon, right here.Links:Tift MerrittThe SparkRosanne CashDorris BettsClick here to watch this conversation on YouTube.Social Media:The Other 22 Hours InstagramThe Other 22 Hours TikTokMichaela Anne InstagramAaron Shafer-Haiss InstagramAll music written, performed, and produced by Aaron Shafer-Haiss. I speak with artist and multi-instrumentalist Robert Ellis, one of the best singer-songwriters of his generation. I'll tell you why: first, his songs do what great pop songs do - grab your attention with a hook as sticky as hot honey (check out “Bottle of Wine” for an example), but you get a sense there's always something held in reserve, something that won't be revealed until you come back for a second or third or fourth listen.That might have to do with Robert's respect for the mutable laws of music theory (we talk about the relationship of the V to I cadence as the backbone for all music since Bach), or his sense of play evident in a catalogue that already spans 6 albums across genres as diverse as bluegrass-inspired ripper (“Sing Along”) to 70s' Rock (“Nobody Smokes Anymore”), or the soft spun album “Yesterday's News” reminiscent of Willie Nelson's “Rainbow Connection”.Or it could have to do with the fact that while guitar is his primary instrument (he is a *very* good guitar player) his chops on piano are formidable enough that not only did he release an album on ivories (2019's Texas Piano Man), but he toured it heavily - in a white tux and top hat, often solo at the keys.The Morse Code is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.Robert has played Tiny Desk, Mountain Stage, and more recently, Carnegie Hall and collaborated with countless musicians from Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes to Jamestown Revival to Tift Merritt.A few weeks ago he took time off his tour with Parker Millsap to talk with me about his free-spirited approach to songwriting, playing and creativity in general.In this wide-ranging conversation we talk about the narrative parallels between music and  literature, and how even chord progressions have a narrative arc. We talk about the importance of — when evaluating a prospective work of art — shifting the question from “Is it perfect”? to “Is it me?” We even venture into territory of a purely philosophical bent, discussing Free Will and its role in a empathic worldview. Robert is consistent with his meditative practice, and as a father of three, his kids often join in for the morning meditation. We hit on the importance in being absolutely present while both performing and producing, and how that ethos applies to acting. Robert recently acted in a short film, directed by his wife, filmmaker Erica Silverman. He talked a little about that experience which I found revealing and charming and hilarious.Finally, the Texas Troubadour sat down to play his original “On the Run” live in studio on solo guitar. Watch and listen below.There's a lot more in this conversation, one of my favorite ever on this podcast. Get full access to The Morse Code at korby.substack.com/subscribe

Editor's note: Basic Folk is pleased to introduce our listeners to one of our favorite podcasts by sharing an episode in our feed! One of my favorite and most insightful interviews on Basic Folk has to have been from Ben Arthur. Ben let the walls come down and allowed us to both dig into his psyche. It was a rare privilege to be able to strip feelings and actions down to their studs and really examine what's going on. I'd recommend checking out Ben's previous appearance on Basic Folk... that is, after you take a listen to his wonderful podcast, SongWriter. The concept is amazing: some of the best writers present their stories followed by an answer song written specifically for the tale by some of our favorite songwriters. Enjoy!SongWriter is a podcast of stories and “answer songs,” featuring performances by Amanda Shires, Roxane Gay, Mary Gauthier, Joyce Carol Oates, Tift Merritt, and David Gilmour of Pink Floyd. Each episode includes a story from an author or storyteller, and a song written in response, as well as conversations about inspiration, art, and music. Host by songwriter and previous Basic Folk guest, Ben Arthur. In this episode of SongWriter, bestselling author Cheryl Strayed reads a letter about her mother from her celebrated advice column "Dear Sugar," and songwriter Maia Sharp talks about a recent break-up and performs her song "It's Always Good to See You.”Cheryl's memoir Wild was made into a movie starring Reese Witherspoon, and Maia has written songs for Bonnie Raitt, Cher, and Trisha Yearwood. Irish-American John A. Logan was an American soldier and politician who served admirably in the Mexican–American War and was a general in the Union Army in the Civil War. An Illinois native, he served as a State Senator, a Congressman, and a U.S. Senator and was on the ticket as a Vice Presidential candidate in 1884. At age 23, Caryn Womack picked up her first guitar and began penning her own songs, armed with nothing but an affinity for music and a few stories on her heart to tell. Within one year, she'd released her first self-titled LP of all-original tracks, which debuted at #177 on the Top 200 iTunes Country Albums chart. A native of Cartersville, Caryn grew up on gospel hymns and mountain music that she learned on her grandmother's swing during Georgia summers. The songbird sheds new light on what it means to grow up in (and out of) a Southern town, drawing inspiration from the emotional stems of young heartbreak, old battle scars and new love.Caryn's folksy harmonies, blended with upbeat country pop tempos and Americana undertones, make for a unique sound that winds somewhere down the road between Jo Dee Messina's front door and June Carter's backyard, which is just where she likes it. Her influences include artists ranging from outlaw country's Tift Merritt to popular radio artists such as Eli Young Band and Miranda Lambert to classic rock's Eagles.

In the music world, ‘sideman' is a term used to describe a member of a band who supports the main act. Their employment can range from a single gig to a long, steady career with a single marquee artist. Their job is to make their employer sound good, and the amount of attention they receive can also vary widely – from nameless jobbers to players who have made supporting other artists their primary claim to fame and source of income. It can be a great gig, because the members of the band can go to the mall without being mobbed while their boss suffers the trappings of fame. Guitarist Doug Pettibone has been the right-hand-man for revered songwriter Lucinda Williams for over a decade, accompanying her both in the studio and onstage. Although playing in Lucinda's band is his main gig, he has also worked with a long list of household names, not the least of which are Keith Richards, Mark Knopfler, John Mayer, Norah Jones, Sting, Steve Earle, Elvis Costello, Jewel and Tift Merritt. But Pettibone is far being from the kind of sideman that just plays guitar next to the singer. He also writes, produces and plays a multitude of instruments with a near virtuosic flair. All of these skills are showcased on his brand new album, Gone, released in February of 2014. Far from being the vanity project of a journeyman guitarist, Gone finds Pettibone showcasing his considerable skills as an artist in his own right. All the amazing guitar parts and tones that are the hallmark of Pettibone's playing are evident on Gone, and the liner notes read like a who's who of top echelon musicians. Perhaps most pleasantly surprising is the confidence of his vocals as the songs veer from breezy Southern California Byrds-style pop to blues of both the jazzy and down and dirty kind.

Does Bach Need 'Rescuing' from Period Instruments?

Conducting Business

In recent months, symphony orchestras have returned to the music of J.S. Bach with a vengeance. The New York Philharmonic is in the midst of a month-long Bach festival with the expressed goal of reclaiming the master's music for modern instruments. At the Philadelphia Orchestra, Bach's St. Matthew Passion and Brandenburg Concertos are on the calendar this spring. The orchestra also plans to re-record the Bach transcriptions of Leopold Stokowski – those sumptuous, technicolor arrangements that had been considered passé (if enjoyably so). "There's been a weird phenomenon for a long time that has made it pretty rare to see Bach on symphony orchestra programs," said New York Philharmonic music director Alan Gilbert in a recent video explaining the orchestra's project. He goes on to question the "exclusivity" of suggesting "there was one only one right way to play Bach." All of this is a far cry from the period-instrument movement's expressed goals to rediscover how Baroque music might have sounded using original instruments and performance practices. For years, if not decades, period-instrument players had gained the upper hand by researching appropriate tempos, ornamentation and instruments. In this podcast, host Naomi Lewin asks three guests about this phenomenon. "I think [orchestras] are panicking," said Monica Huggett, a leading baroque violinist and conductor. "In London, where I worked most of my career, the big orchestras stopped playing Bach because in the end, there was so much good historical performance that they really didn't need to do it any more and people really didn't want to hear it any more." James Oestreich, the consulting classical music editor at the New York Times, sees things differently. "I wouldn't agree that the large orchestras are panicking," he said. "I think they've lost their balance to some extent. I think they've lost confidence in the repertory to some extent. To hold up the music scene in a world capital like London or New York and say this should set standards for who performs what, I don't think is fair." Oestreich adds that the New York Philharmonic played lots of Bach in the 1990s, and the orchestra is "perhaps overselling" the novelty of its current festival. Lewin also asks a prominent New York pianist whether she's trying to reclaim Bach for the modern instrument. "I'm not doing anything unique by playing Bach on the piano," said the pianist Simone Dinnerstein. "I think that I just have more omnivorous tastes and think that Bach sounds very interesting and different when played in many different ways on many different instruments with modern orchestras, on authentic instruments." Weigh in: Do you enjoy the sound of Bach played on modern or on period instruments? Please leave your comments below. Guests: James Oestreich, the consulting classical music editor and a freelance writer for the New York Times. Monica Huggett, a leading baroque violinist and conductor who teaches at Juilliard. Simone Dinnerstein, a pianist who has made a number of Bach recordings. Her latest, called “Night,” with the singer-songwriter Tift Merritt, features a modern rendering of Bach. .chart_div { width: 600px; height: 300px; } loadSurvey( "bach-period-instruments", "survey_bach-period-instruments");
