Our reporter from Texas, Akshaj Turebylu, triangulates the influences responsible for the irresistible, intercontinental, genre-bending, collaborative album called History of House. Our guides include Shimmy Jiyane, a founding member of the Soweto Gospel Choir, the pre-eminent African gospel performers in the world. We're also joined by Latroit, a Grammy-winning producer who got his start with the legendary techno wizards, Inner City. Akshaj speaks to Shimmy and Dennis to learn how Australian DJ Groove Terminator put the pieces together for this revelatory release blending Afro house, Amapiano, techno, gospel, and more into, as it were, a tapestry of "the (global) history of house." As we find out, Detroit and Johannesburg have been speaking to each other for much longer than you might imagine. In this episode we also preview Afrobeat artist Amayo's 2025 album, Lion Awakes.

Five-time Grammy winning music icon Angélique Kidjo is in the spotlight with “Sunlight To My Soul.” It’s a piece written in collaboration with legendary songwriter Diane Warren penning the lyrics and Nigerian afrobeats producer Shizzi crafting African rhythms — and it’s buoyed by the warmth of the Soweto Gospel Choir. P.S. Fun fact: Diane Warren has the distinction of being the most nominated songwriter in Oscar history(!) Under President Obrador’s new constitutional amendment, thousands of appointed judges will lose their jobs and face election. Opponents fear a threat to democracy. Chief Justice John Roberts penned three Supreme Court rulings related to January 6 that benefit former President Trump. His role is the focus of a New York Times investigation. “Art and science collide” is the theme of this year’s PST ART, a Getty-sponsored event featuring more than 800 artists and at least 70 art institutions around SoCal. The Soweto Gospel Choir of South Africa’s latest album reimagines popular dance tracks of the last 50 years. Some of the lyrics are in Zulu, and traditional house beats are subbed for African rhythms.
World Cafe correspondent John Morrison digs into the South African gospel group's latest record, which recontextualizes classic club hits.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

The World's Greatest Pink Floyd show. Welcome to Faith at the Fringe Sanctuary First's NEW podcast series Find out more. International touring sensation, the Soweto Gospel Choir, are in town for the Festival. Today we were joined by Milton Ndlakuse and Mary Mulovhedzi and they shared some very emotive and profound insights into their life and the Soweto Gospel Choir. Listen to the Faith at the Fringe podcasts here on Sanctuary First, our App and you can also find us on Spotify, Apple Music and YouTube.
The podcast review of the Year was an opportunity for us to invite back some previous guests to talk about their contributions to the pod and to listen and comment on some of the other highlights. Our guests were Mike Knight of Newport Cricket Club who, with brother Dave, was awarded a BEM at the 2021 New Years Honours List. He came onto the pod in February and gave an enthralling interview about the history of the Rodney Parade ground.Professor Richard Thomas of Swansea University had his book ‘Cricketing Lives: A Characterful History from Pitch to Page' published by Reaktion Books in May. He talked to us about why he wrote the book and gave us a whistle-stop tour through the history of the game citing the greatest of names along the way including WG Grace, Len Hutton, Wally Hammond, Ian Botham and Ben Stokes as well as sketching out the importance of the women's game and a brief history of the Ashes.Chris Peregrine is a journalist who works for the Swansea Evening Post. As a member of Clwb Criced Bronwydd he contributed to a lovely episode all about the club as well as putting us in touch with people who could talk with some authority about the Swansea Mid-Week Leagues.Along with Stephen Hedges and Jan Gray from the podcast the panel discussed the following clips:Lord Peter Hain, anti-apartheid campaigner and local MP talked about the game held in 1995 between local club Ynysygerwn and the first ever all black club side to tour the UK from Soweto South Africa. His reflections were captured along with those of Ynys player Huw Jenkins and Soweto cricketer Gordon Templeton. Mike Knight talking about the 1939 County Championship match between Glamorgan and Gloucestershire in which Wally Hammond scored an incredible triple century. Richard Thomas talks about that long standing sporting rivalry, the Ashes. If you are interested in buying Richard's book, go here:http://www.reaktionbooks.co.uk/display.asp?ISB=9781789143713 Mike Llewellyn, interviewed for our series of episodes entitled ‘Where Are They Know', told a string of amusing stories. This one was one that didn't make the original programme all about county player Albert Wright. We interviewed members of the Conwy Ladies Cricket Team. Here, Emma Leighton – Jones and Llinos Hill talk about the importance of role models and the impact of ECB initiatives the All Stars and Dynamo Programmes. On our visit to Clwb Criced Bronwydd we met long standing member Arwen Thomas who tells us about the time that cricket gives for a little bit of repartee. We finish the review with a clip from our interview with Ken Lewis, 92 years old and the oldest surviving Glamorgan professional. His words are accompanied by the Soweto Gospel Choir who allowed us to use their music for the episode all about Ynysygerwn and Soweto. To find out a little more about them and their music go here:https://www.sowetogospelchoir.com/ Thank you to all our guests in 2021. Here's to an enjoyable cricketing year in 2022 when, hopefully, we will have a full programme of cricket and some more great stories to bring you.

Episode 19: Mary Cohen - Freeing Silenced VoicesThreshold Questions and Delicious QuotesHow can singing a song help change the mind and the heart? ...the thing about singing that's really valuable for me at least is it's embodied. We're using our breath. We're using our voice. We're using our ears. We're feeling the vibrations in our bodies. So being able to do that with other people is super- it can be powerful. One of the students in the peace building class last spring shared such an insightful comment. She said, if you're in there singing together with your eyes closed, we don't know which voice is going to be walking out of the [00:31:00] prison at the end of the rehearsal, in which voices be staying in the prison. What is ubuntu, and how does it relate to prison choir work? Ubuntu Is that beautiful concept from South Africa, meaning a lot of things, a person as a person through other people. Desmond Tutu defined it as, "my humanity is inextricably bound with your humanity". ...But we need to know who we are and be at peace with ourselves in order to step forward and find our sense of common humanity with others...you can only imagine a choir has songs with lyrics and some of those lyrics may resonate with one person and not so much with someone else, particularly if it's songs that have some kind of a religious connection. However, if we [00:12:00] follow deeply the idea of Ubuntu, we ideally can sing these songs because we're looking at our relationship with the larger communal body when we're singing together. What do the Oakdale Prison, the Soweto Gospel Choir, and the TV show Friends have in common? I found a song calledhttps://oakdalechoir.lib.uiowa.edu/2019/06/04/changes-we-choose/#more-694 ( How Shall We Come Together) by ... Maggie Wheeler. Do you know Maggie? ... on the TV show Friends, Maggie played the role of Janice. The character that would go "oh my God", that's Maggie! ...So, I contact Maggie completely out of the blue to ask permission to use her song. And after a series of conversations, Maggie's like "Mary, you want to use my song in a prison with the Soweto gospel choir? I'm coming to Iowa". How can a prison choir contribute to prison abolition, to excarceration? You know, we have 3,144 different stories of prison growth, one for every County. So this imagination that the abolition thinkers are requiring of us needs to [00:34:00] happen at a very local level, and the way that I've tried to apply it through the building class I've started, and through the work we do with the choir is that local space of creating the healing needs to happen internally, each person developing a sense of inner peace building. That's the project, the primary project we do in this class, and in the Oakdale Choir, we've actually done it these 10 years through the writing exchange changes where the choir members write reflective components and they share it with one another and that broadens their awareness of what people are experiencing, what their stories are related to each choir season, the songs we're doing, the original songs that have been created. Transcript Bill Cleveland: [00:00:00] I'm curious, is there something more to singing than just voices moving the melody and the words out into the world? Can the simple act of singing a song together, turn a deeply feared "other" into an "us"? Mary Cohen thinks so, actually, she knows, so because she's been doing just that for 11 years at Iowa's Oakdale Prison. This is https://change-the-story-chan.captivate.fm/listen (Change the Story, Change the World,) a chronicle of art and community transformation. I'm Bill Cleveland. As you're probably aware the us has one of the world's highest COVID death rates. Sadly, we also bear the distinction of the highest per capita prisoner rate, by far, leaving Turkmenistan, Russia, and China in the dust. The enormity of our prison population, we have a little over 4% of the globe's people in 25% of its prisoners,... Support this podcast

There's some really joyous stuff in this and there's also whatever the hell Chris was on about when discussing the latest from The Used. Four awesome 2020 songs discussed, an internet drop out, and a potential permanent rift in the collaboration that may never heal. But it probably will. Because we love doing this and hope you do too. Honestly, we're still vibing on Sauti Sol ft. Soweto Gospel Choir's song from last week, so get on that if you need to lift your mood. Or let us know anything you're digging - find @dugbyus on whatever social media you like.
In this in-between time, there are constants we can hold onto and those constants revolve around the person and promise of God READING 1 Peter 1:17-23 If you invoke as Father the one who judges all people impartially according to their deeds, live in reverent fear during the time of your exile. You know that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your ancestors, not with perishable things like silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without defect or blemish. He was destined before the foundation of the world, but was revealed at the end of the ages for your sake. Through him you have come to trust in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are set on God. Now that you have purified your souls by your obedience to the truth so that you have genuine mutual love, love one another deeply from the heart. You have been born anew, not of perishable but of imperishable seed, through the living and enduring word of God.
