In today's episode of the Brains Byte Back podcast, we speak with Venkatesh Sundar, Founder & CMO at Indusface, a company offering web app security, WAF and SSL Certificates to keep businesses safe. In the conversation, Sundar shares tips to help listeners defend their businesses from hackers. He starts off by stressing the importance of ensuring that all software and systems are kept up to date with the latest security patches and updates. Doing this can help to shut down any known vulnerabilities that hackers may look to exploit. Additionally, he underlines that it's important to make use of strong access controls and authentication measures to ensure that only authorized users are able to access sensitive data or systems. This consists of measures such as two-factor authentication, strong password policies, and limiting access to only those who require it. Sundar adds that regular security assessments and penetration testing can be effective when it comes to identifying vulnerabilities before hackers can take advantage of them. This can entail simulating real-world attacks and attempting to exploit weaknesses in the system,to find potential areas where improvement is necessary. Alongside the above, Sundar highlights specific tactics that listeners can use to defend against ransomware attacks, such as ensuring that data backups are regularly performed and stored securely. This can help to reduce the impact of a ransomware attack by allowing businesses to restore their systems and data from a previous backup. And finally, Sundar covers why it is important to educate employees about the risks of phishing attacks and other social engineering tactics that hackers frequently use to gain access to sensitive data or systems.  He encourages business owners to provide regular security awareness training to make sure that employees are more knowledgeable and fully aware of the latest threats and how to avoid falling victim to them. We wanted to go deeper on the caching library Nebulex, so we visited with the creator, Carlos Bolaños, to learn what prompted its creation. Nebulex takes a couple unique approaches to things. It supports a decorator pattern to indicate that a function should be cached without having to write the boilerplate code for reading and writing to the cache. Nebulex was inspired by Ecto, in that it supports multiple adapters to different backends like Redis, Cachex and even Horde! It also supports multiple caching strategies. It's an interesting project that aims to solve common caching challenges in new ways and we enjoyed learning more about it. But, there's more to a method signature, such as the mode in which it can be invoked. Most methods can only be invoked as a member method. However, in some cases, an Object's API allows for methods to be detached and passed-around as "naked functions". In ColdFusion, we can use Closures / Lambdas to bind a Function reference to a ColdFusion Component instance such that the "member method" can be used - and work correctly - as a "naked function".https://www.bennadel.com/blog/4240-using-closures-to-bind-naked-functions-to-components-in-coldfusion.htm04/03/2022 - Blog - Ben Nadel - Adding FusionReactor Sub-Transaction Breakdowns To My ColdFusion BlogA couple of years ago, I wrote about how we're using the FusionReactor API (FRAPI) to instrument our Lucee CFML apps at work. And, now that I have FusionReactor installed on my ColdFusion 2021 blog, I've been translating some of that logic over to this site. I recently demonstrated that FusionReactor gave me critical insights into my SQL queries and my in-memory caching techniques. And, this morning, I added some "Tracked Transactions" to help me understand how long certain portions of my ColdFusion request was taking to execute.Especially useful since FusionReactor doesn't provide CFC method nameshttps://www.bennadel.com/blog/4242-adding-fusionreactor-sub-transaction-breakdowns-to-my-coldfusion-blog.htmUseful link: https://forgebox.io/view/FRAPISDK04/04/2022 - Blog - Ben Nadel - Moving My Short-Code Redirects To NetlifyFor years, I've had my own "short code" URL, bjam.in. There's no meaningful reason for me to have it - only, that I was raised in an era when short codes were all the rage. And, an era in which Twitter actually counted embedded URLs as part of the overall message length (something that they no longer do). But, one thing that's always bothered me about bjam.in is that it didn't have an SSL Certificate. I never wanted to pay for one since the site does nothing but redirect to www.bennadel.com, which does have an SSL Certificate. To remedy this, I've moved my bjam.in logic over to Netlify which automatically provisions SSL Certificates using Let's Encrypt.https://www.bennadel.com/blog/4243-moving-my-short-code-redirects-to-netlify.htm04/05/2022 - Blog - Ben Nadel - Adding CreateTimeSpan() To Date/Time Values In ColdFusionIn ColdFusion, it's trivial to add a given date-part, such an "hour" or a "day", to an existing date - there are built-in functions and member-methods for this task. But, it's a little harder to mix "Dates" with "Time Spans". Doing so, often leads to a fractional numeric value. This fractional value is a "numeric date". There are a number of ways to cast between "numeric dates" and "dates"; but, I wanted to look at how we can avoid casting by thinking about what a "time span" actually is; and, how we can efficiently add and remove time spans to and from dates in ColdFusion.https://www.bennadel.com/blog/4244-adding-createtimespan-to-date-time-values-in-coldfusion.htm04/03/2022 - Tweet - @cfhawaiiWe are looking for a speaker on #coldFusion ORM DM me if interestedhttps://twitter.com/cfhawaii/status/151080504602325401804/01/2022 - Tweet - @ortussolutionsThe Ortus USA Team has been working hard at this year's retreat. One of the most common website questions I hear is: How do I know my website is secure—for me and for my customers? What is an SSL certificate? SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) is a protocol for establishing authenticated and encrypted communication between networked computers. How does an SSL certificate make my website more secure? This secret handshake happens between your web browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, etc.) and your web server (the computer where your website files live). What does having an SSL certificate say about your website?Having an SSL certificate says that your site can be trusted by ensuring:✔ Your site is authentic. (The secret handshake was completed.)✔ Your site has integrity. (The secret handshake wasn't altered by a third-party hand-slap fest.)✔ Your site is encrypted. (All chit-chat is now bound by website/server confidentiality.)How do I get an SSL certificate?Fortunately for you and for your website, there are oodles of options (and costs) for obtaining an SSL certificate.Mick Smith, Consultant M: (619) 227.3118 E: mick.smith@wsiworld.com Commercials Voice Talent:https://www.spreaker.com/user/7768747/track-1-commercials Narratives Voice Talent:https://www.spreaker.com/user/7768747/track-2-narrativesDo you want a free competitive analysis? SSLcertificates have become an integral part of today's internet. Allowing the encryption of traffic between host and client has opened up multiple opportunities for services to be accessed from anywhere, further expanding the scope of possibilities the internet has to offer. From financial to confidential work-related web applications, SSLcertificates have made it possible to ensure your connection is safe and secure between you and the web application being accessed. Using SSLcertificates might not be the most important sign of security when using a web application, but with increasingly easier and cost-free implementation of SSLcertificates via providers like LetsEncrypt, it becomes all the more important to ensure that your web applications are SSL-enabled as the whole internet pushes forward for a much more secure environment. Using SSLcertificates, however, is not without a catch. SSLcertificates do not simply renew, they have to be re-issued once they expire. While this is often misunderstood and considered a flaw, it allows SSLcertificates to stay secure by forcing the observance of newer standards when SSLcertificates are re-generated. If SSLcertificates were to simply renew, they would never be replaced with modern encryption standards—and that would lead to flawed SSLcertificates. How a browser displays expired SSLcertificates If your web application is using an expired SSL certificate, the web browser used to access it will display a large warning that your website is insecure and potentially dangerous. These warnings are often large enough to deter potential customers and users. Let's look at some of the most commonly used web browsers and see how they display warnings about expired SSLcertificates. **Google Chrome** Google Chrome is one the most extensively used browsers out there. Its error page gives you a clear indicator if the website you're trying to access has something wrong with it—and isn't private. **Firefox** Firefox displays a detailed yet eye-catching error message to let you know that the website being accessed isn't going to be safe. **Microsoft Edge** Microsoft Edge is another Chromium-based browser with an alert, error page similar to Google Chrome's, giving you a clear message that your connection isn't private. **Internet Explorer** Finally, here's a look at one of the oldest yet still frequently used web browsers, Internet Explorer. In the latest version of IE which ships with Windows 10, IE 11, you'll get a clear indicator if something is wrong with the SSL certificate, and the site being accessed isn't secure. Consequences of expired SSLcertificates While SSLcertificates offer your users added security and peace of mind when accessing your web application, an expired SSL certificate can reverse all that and cause a lot of damage. Reputational damage Your web application's reputation is one of its most important assets. For a new customer visiting your web application for the first time, being greeted with an expired SSL certificate warning won't be the best thing for its reputation. Sometimes, technically advanced users will manually verify the certificate and understand the certificate just expired, prompting them to ignore and, or add an exception for your web application, but new customers and non-technically advanced users may not understand this. They're much more likely to view your web application as dangerous. Word-of-mouth and social media-based reputation is another important aspect to consider. Potential customers often look toward multiple sources such as search engines, social media platforms and technical forums for feedback or information about your web application. And a user reporting your web application as having an expired SSL certificate, and being potentially dangerous, can have a bad impact on your web application's reputation. Financial loss Financial loss is another important aspect to consider when dealing with expired ...

SSL or Secure Sockets Layer is a certification that essentially signifies that you are the real owner of the website. The green lock next to your website's URL indicates that your website is trusted and is safe, thereby boosting the user's confidence to use your website. Also, search engines like Google or Bing will show safer or trusted websites higher up. Therefore, you can see that in the Google SERP, the HTTPS websites are displayed above the HTTP ones. Pinterest20 Facebook 0 Twitter 0 LinkedIn WhatsApp 20Shares Have you ever seen a “Not Secured” notification in front of a website URL on the address bar? What was your first thought when you saw that? If you are anything like me, you would have asked yourselves if you really want to click through to the website. Isn’t it? Now imagine if it was your website. A little while back, Google came out with an update that emphasized the need to provide a clean and secure experience to users. That was the first notification to websites to start looking at options to enhance the security of their website. Then in 2014, they announced HTTPS as a ranking signal. And then began the race. Who doesn’t want their Search engine rankings and that too on Google, to stay intact? There started the frenzy to get SSL Certificates for their websites and marketers quickly went onto get their websites HTTPS compliant. But was it really necessary? Does HTTPS help in Search Engine Rankings? One of the common questions that most bloggers have is “does SSL Certificates help in search engine rankings?”. His study was done a little while back. And since that time there has been a few more significant changes. Browsers like Chrome and Firefox started shaming websites that were not HTTPS, by showing a “Not Secure” tag in the address bar. In this time, the impact that HTTPS has on search engine rankings have also increased. Some studies have indeed shown So what is this HTTPS thing all about? What is HTTPS? HTTPS stands for Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure and its main benefit is that it provides a secure connection to users on those pages where they share personal data. And in order for this to happen, you need to install an SSL certificate (Secure Socket Layer certificate). Its a protocol that HTTPS uses. In layman’s terms, it means that HTTPS encrpts the secured information that is exchanged between a web server and a browser, thereby keeping such information safe. This means that you website will be considered as a trustworthy one by people using it. Once you have installed an SSL certificate, browsers like Firefox and Chrome will show a security padlock in green, which basically proves that your website is trustworthy and secure. But what are the benefits of an SSL Certificate? Benefits of installing an SSL Certificate If you are an internet marketer or, Blogger, I am sure your business depends on your trustworthiness.
