We have just completed our quarterly analysis of FSU casework and dive into the results of that during today's episode. The first quarter of 2025 was our busiest ever with 411 new incidents received in the FSU inbox. This growth in caseload is directly related to the continuing increase in FSU active membership, which is now running at over 4,000 new members per quarter. ‘State Intervention', which ranges from police contact and Non-Crime Hate Incidents through to arrest and prosecution, is a growing proportion of our work, representing 23% of new cases for the year to date, up from just 10% as recently as 2023. The good news is that, for cases that we see through from beginning to end, our member achieves a favourable outcome 80% of the time. We end the episode with a discussion on our third Belfast speakeasy that was held on Friday 11th April – the video should be up later in the week. We wish all our listeners and viewers a very Happy Easter! ‘That's Debatable!'  is edited by Jason Clift.

State Intervention Promotes a Culture of Greed and Selfishness - not "Capitalism." An Interview with Dr. Guido Hulsmann

“Unfettered capitalism” creates a “dog-eat-dog” world in which the strong profit at the expense of the weak, everyone only looks out for their own interests, and society becomes selfish, atomized, and less human, with its members caring only about making money, not about each other. So goes the standard mainstream view of a free society, and free markets. If you went to a government school, you heard some version of this.Economist Guido Hulsmann has a new book out that tears this caricature to shreds. In Abundance, Generosity, and the State: An Inquiry into Economic Principles, Dr. Hulsmann systematically demonstrates the ways in which people naturally tend to help each other and to produce goods and services that do not directly benefit them in any material way.He then shows us how government intervention works to stifle and even squash much of this activity – from government control in money and banking encouraging irresponsible financial behavior and discouraging voluntary donations (if you take nothing else from this interview, be sure to take note of the “saturation mechanism” and what happens to it in an interventionist system), to the tragic outcomes of the welfare state. Dr. Hulsmann turns the standard caricature on its head, and shows us in painstaking detail, how it is not freedom, but coercive interventions in the lives of free people that work to create a society of self-centered and atomized individuals.Dr Hülsmann is a professor of economics at the University of Angers in France. He is also a Senior Fellow of the Mises Institute and a corresponding member of the Pontifical Academy for Life. His website is here. And his book, Abundance, Generosity, and the State: An Inquiry into Economic Principles, is here. The book he mentions, The Welfare State We're In, by James Bartholomew, can be found here.

Capitalism has major issues to address about the failures of its neoliberal model. Greater state intervention in the economy is being pursued in the United States and Britain. Although this may seem a radical departure from neoliberal orthodoxy, nevertheless it is nothing like the levels of nationalisation and state intervention which once prevailed. Facing global challenges, especially from China, will these modest departures from free market dogma be enough to save capitalism?

Unprecedented state intervention - but still workers suffer? The British government has pledged hundreds of billions in funding during the Covid-19 pandemic. The US Congress has approved trillions. Capitalist governments in multiple countries seem to be abandoning privatisation and market competition for nationalisation and central coordination. It looks quite a lot like some of the policies socialists call for. But corporate profits are being subsidised. The big banks and finance sector are untouched. And workers are receiving too little too late when it comes to income and safety protections. In fact, lack of personal protective equipment is killing frontline health workers in the UK, and 10 million workers have joined the unemployment lines in just two weeks in the US. In this episode, I cover the biggest news story of the week, that of the recent announcement by North and South Korea that their countries are at peace and have pledged denuclearisation. This is just what the world needs right now at this very volatile time. I also cover the tragic death and treatment of Alfie Evans and the valiant attempt by his parents to get him to an Italian hospital for treatment. This story connects into other areas than have been covered on and in the news, which I talk about. Robotics and automation are taking over from humans in jobs. I talk about the significance of this and why it’s more important to address and another two stories I feature connect into this, that of high street shops disappearing due to rental rates while giant corporations thrive. Both of these issues are connected and I explain why. Here’s the clip from the movie Idiocracy that I mention in this episode: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lUTZmSyDErg Thanks to Colm Kelly for editing & music.
