(AURN News) — A new poll is providing fresh insight into voters' mixed feelings about President Donald Trump's tariff war and his overall handling of the economy as he is set to approach the 100-day mark of his second term at the end of the month. A recent Quinnipiac University poll shows 72% of voters believe the tariffs will hurt the economy in the short term. Additionally, 53% say they expect the tariffs to cause economic harm over the long term. Among Republicans, 44% think the tariffs will hurt the economy in the short term, and 77% of independents agree. On the subject of Trump's performance, his approval rating has slipped slightly, falling from 42% in March to 41% in April.  The economy, a critical issue in the 2024 election, appears to be a point of concern: 55% of voters disapprove of Trump's handling of economic matters. When asked specifically about trade, only 39% approve of the president's performance. Quinnipiac University conducted the poll with voters nationwide between April 3 and 7. Spending reviews, which decide how at least half a trillion pounds of annual public spending should be allocated across different public services, are one of the most consequential processes in government. The new government has announced a new review, to conclude in Spring 2025, that will determine departmental budgets for much of the current parliament. But how should ministers choose how to prioritise for spending? Should more money be spent on roads, skills, or police? What is the best way to judge the costs and benefits of each decision?   A new report from the London School of Economics, Value for Money calls for a radical change in policy making. It argues that policies should be judged using a cost-benefit analysis which includes a comprehensive valuation of their effects on wellbeing. The report argues that, judged this way, therapies for mental health and guaranteed apprenticeships give much better value for money than most new roads.   To discuss this topic, we were joined by a panel, including:   Professor Lord Richard Layard, Co-Director of the Community Wellbeing Programme at the Centre for Economic Performance, London School of Economics and co-author of Value for Money Lord Gus O'Donnell, former Cabinet Secretary Amanda Rowlatt, former Chief Economist at the Department for Transport, Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, and Department for Work and Pensions Conrad Smewing, Director General of Public Spending in His Majesty's Treasury and Joint-Head of the Government Finance Function   The panel was chaired by Gemma Tetlow, Chief Economist at the Institute for Government. #Ep.058 The economic performance of emerging markets in the post-COVID-19 world has been a mixed landscape of growth, vulnerability, and resilience. Driven by rebounding commodity prices and supportive fiscal policies, many economies experienced robust recovery, but this revival has been uneven across regions. Factors such as varying global trade impacts, and differences in exposure to external financial conditions have contributed to this disparity. Additionally, challenges such as high debt levels, inflationary pressures, and structural weaknesses persist. While some nations, notably in Asia, have adapted strongly, others, particularly in Latin America and Africa, face external vulnerabilities, leading to a multifaceted and inconsistent picture of economic performance across emerging markets. In this episode, Nirjan Rai and Satyam Panday sit down to unpack S&P Global's Recent Emerging Markets Outlook Report. They begin by discussing the key global takeaways from the report, then focus on the economic performances of China and India, especially in the context of post-pandemic recovery and the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. Satyam also offers his take on the short- and long-term projections for these two countries. They end the conversation with a discussion on why Nepal has failed to exploit the economic performances of its two neighbors and present some thoughts on what Nepal should do to leverage its future growth. Satyam is the Chief US Economist at S&P Global Ratings. Until just recently, he was the Chief Emerging Markets Economist for S&P. He has also taught at Boston College and Brandeis University and has been a research fellow at the US Congressional Budget Office. Satyam holds a Ph.D. in International Economics and Finance and specializes in macroeconomics, development economics, and applied econometrics. He is also a Non-Resident Senior Fellow at PEI. This was a fascinating conversation into the science of happiness and subjective wellbeing with a guy who has done more quality research in this area than almost anyone else on the planet, Professor Lord Richard Layard. What I loved about this conversation was the combination of robust evidence and the list of practical take-homes that we can all implement in our lives. Check out Richard's website with his books and publications here and see below for his ridiculously impressive bio. Richard Layard is the founder-Director of the Centre for Economic Performance - a leading inter-disciplinary research centre at the London School of Economics. He is currently co-Director of their Community Wellbeing programme. Richard is an economist who thinks there is more to happiness than just the economy. In 2005 he wrote the best-selling book Happiness: Lessons from a New Science, translated into 20 languages. He has had huge influence on making psychological therapy more widely available in Britain's National Health Service, and in 2014 co-authored Thrive on how we can secure a better deal for mental health. In 2018 he co-authored The Origins of Happiness – an analysis of what determines our happiness, based on a range of longitudinal datasets. Richard's latest book is Can we be happier? The evidence and ethics for better lives explores how teachers, managers, health professionals, couples, community leaders, economists, scientists, politicians, and we as individuals can create a happier world. In 2010 Richard Layard co-founded of Action for Happiness, an international movement to promote a happier way of living. Since 2012 he has also been a co-editor of the World Happiness Report - which is published at the UN every March on International World Happiness Day. He is also a Director of the World Wellbeing Movement, based at Oxford University's Wellbeing Research Centre. In 2000 Richard was made a member of the House of Lords and since then has played an active role in the political arena. He served on the Select Committee for Economic Affairs from 2004-2019 and in 2018, with the support of the What Works Centre for Wellbeing, he revived the All Party Parliamentary Group on Wellbeing Economics which published their report A Spending Review to Increase Wellbeing: an open letter to the Chancellor calling for a major change of direction. That policy should be targeted at the wellbeing of the people and not at economic growth.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Improving economic performance outside London and the South East is a core aim of the government's levelling up agenda. Drawing on past IfG research, this event explored what policies, and policy approaches, would best support economic performance outside London and the South East and compare these with the government's current policies. Our panel discussed: What policies would be most effective to achieve the government's productivity mission and what should the government prioritise? What will the Sunak government do differently to the Johnson government and where can it make improvements? Are there lessons from the way other countries have attempted to level up? And how important are the economic aspects of levelling up, as opposed to other missions to increase pride in place and wellbeing? To explore these questions, the IfG brought together an expert panel including: Adam Hawksbee, Deputy Director at Onward Ruth Kelly, Chief Analyst at the National Audit Office Thomas Pope, Deputy Chief Economist at the Institute for Government Professor Bart Van Ark, Professor of Productivity Studies at the Alliance Manchester Business School, and Managing Director of The Productivity Institute at The University of Manchester The event was chaired by Gemma Tetlow, Chief Economist at the Institute for Government.

Case Interview Preparation & Management Consulting | Strategy | Critical Thinking

Welcome to an episode with Emeritus Professor at UCLA Anderson, Richard Rumelt. Get Richard's book here: https://amzn.to/3OrNfuK In this episode, Richard iterated the real meaning of strategy, which many companies today confuse with a list of their goals and ambitions. Strategy is problem-solving – a clever way of dealing with a challenge, opponent, or problem. It also involves selecting which battle you fight because you cannot fight them all. As a great strategist, you need to select battles that you can win.  Richard also explained the crux or the biggest challenge that companies need to identify, emphasize, and concentrate their resources on until it is fixed or solved. As Richard mentioned in this episode, “the primary thing about strategy is that it is about a concentration of resources. It is about focus.” Richard Rumelt received his doctorate from the Harvard Business School in 1972, having previously earned a Master of Science in electrical engineering from UC Berkeley. He worked as a systems engineer at the Jet Propulsion Laboratories and served on the faculty of the Harvard Business School. He joined the UCLA faculty in 1976. He also served as a faculty at INSEAD, France for three years. At INSEAD, Rumelt headed the Corporate Renewal Initiative, a research-intervention center devoted to the study and practice of corporate transformation. Rumelt was president of the Strategic Management Society from 1995 to 1998. He received the Irwin Prize for his book Strategy, Structure, and Economic Performance. In 1997, he was appointed Telecom Italia Strategy Fellow, a position he held until April 2000. He has won teaching awards at UCLA and received a best paper prize in 1997 from the Strategic Management Journal. One of the central theories of classical economics is that markets respond quickly and efficiently to changes in demand. But the supply chain disruptions that left store shelves empty for much of the pandemic demonstrate that the markets aren't the efficient adapters that classic economists believe them to be. Nobel laureate economist Joseph Stiglitz explains why the tendency to believe in the market is one of the most deeply rooted trickle-down myths, and why government intervention is the best way to respond to economic downturns. This episode was originally released in May 2020. Joseph Stiglitz is a Nobel laureate economist and a professor at Columbia University. He is also the co-chair of the High-Level Expert Group on the Measurement of Economic Performance and Social Progress at the OECD, and the Chief Economist of the Roosevelt Institute.
