In today's economy, generously giving money to other people seems like an impossibility, but generosity is a keystone of a healthy familial culture. Bill High is the co-author of Giving It All Away…And Getting it All Back Again: The Way of Living Generously. He is also the Chief Family Officer at Legacy Stone, and he consults often with family-owned businesses on matters of planning and giving. He discusses how families can learn to foster a spirit of generosity and service within the four walls of their homes, and how to bring that spirit into the workplace. He also talks about the importance of knowing your family history and embracing a narrative identity. “If you know where you have come from, it's much easier to fit inside a larger narrative,” he explains. TAKEAWAYS Many people don't know anything about their family story, and this causes them anxiety and less likely to give of their time and money You and your children will both feel more secure if you know that you are part of a broader picture Hyper-individualism is the number one issue we are facing in America today and causes people to hoard instead of give Create a family atmosphere where everyone gets excited to serve and establish a vision and mission statement to focus on family goals
Join us for an enriching conversation with an extraordinary guest, Tim Calise, an entrepreneur and finance wizard who managed to raise a jaw-dropping $325 million for his first hedge fund by the tender age of 25. But this story is not just about financial success, it's a powerful narrative of choosing principles over profits as Tim returned all of the invested funds to his backers. Buckle up for a roller coaster ride that swiftly moves from money to muscles as we dive into Tim's transition from finance to fitness and tread the path that led him to build technology for the fitness space. Tim describes his involvement in Gym Launch with the incredibly powerful and influential couple, Alex and Layla Hormozi and what it's like to partner with someone whose presence can be felt all over the world. We did not stop at just being a finance expert and fitness tech creator; we wander through his life's chapters, Tim reveals his unique method of transforming products into profits using an intriguing "Legos" analogy. He also shares his insights on the power of self-confidence and the importance of understanding one's identity. Tim Collies' journey is an inspiring testament to the significance of staying true to one's values regardless of the path chosen. This episode is not just about the destinations reached, but a celebration of the paths tread and the choices made along the way. Listen in to draw inspiration from Tim's life story, and who knows, you might just find the push you need to chart your own course in life.

On this episode, Alan Barnhart shares why he and his family decided to give away their massive company from the moment they started building it. Alan Barnhart is the CEO of Barnhart Crane & Rigging, which is in the business of moving heavy stuff … stuff that's hundreds and thousands of tons ... not on 18-wheelers but on 150-wheelers in some cases. Barnhart Crane & Rigging has grown to be one of the largest Heavy Lift and Heavy Transport organizations in the United States with more than 40 locations across the country and a nationwide reputation for solving problems. Alan, Eric, and their families decided to give 100% of their highly successful business to charity to keep wealth from taking over their lives. About 50 percent of all company earnings are donated immediately to charity. The remaining 50 percent is used to grow the business, and in 2007, they gave the entire company to National Christian Foundation. Though they still run its daily operations, the brothers will never reap its accrued value; they keep none of it. Alan and his wife, Katherine, have six children and reside in Tennessee.
Yvon Chouinard, the 84-year-old founder of the billion-dollar outdoor wear company, Patagonia, looks like an unlikely business tycoon. And in a move that sent ripples around the globe late last year, he made a move that proved he isn't. He gave the company away. The reason: to divert all of Patagonia's future profits saying: Earth is now our only shareholder. His move is in stark contrast to the ideology of the most influential economist of our time, Milton Friedman, who admonished those interested in corporate social responsibility that the social responsibility of a business, is to make a profit. Who is right, and what does this say about the kinds of challenges that executives are grappling with in a world that may be finally waking up to the need to create just outcomes for all stakeholders?

Patagonia founder Yvon Chouinard made headlines recently when he announced that he and his family had transferred their $3 billion stake in the storied outdoor gear company to a special purpose trust and nonprofit that would give away $100 million a year, specifically to environmental causes. Patagonia has a long history of donating at least one percent of its profits – and 100% of profits made on Black Friday – to grassroots environmental non-profits. Yet even with this massive gift, and Laurene Powell Jobs' own recent $3.5 billion pledge, climate philanthropy still only accounts for a small fraction of all charitable giving. This Thanksgiving weekend, we look back to our 2016 interview with Yvon Chouinard and bring the story up to date with Inside Philanthropy's Michael Kavate. You've probably heard that Banting and Best gave away the patent for Insulin for one dollar. But why did they do that? And did it achieve what they wanted? We often associate being successful with being profitable. And for a lot of enterprises that is true. But what if your goal is to win the second world war, and you do, but you go bankrupt in the process… is that a ‘success?' What if your goal is to save a lot of people's lives, and the only way to do that is to also make a lot of money? Does that sound like a contradiction? The truth is the relationship between ‘social good,' and ‘good business' is messy. We dig deep into this idea of morality, profits and what it really means to ‘do the right thing.' These science stories from history shed light on the modern research being done on Type 2 Diabetes. Specifically, we highlight the work of SciMar as they examine the hormone HISS - Hepatic Insulin Sensitizing Substance - and the effect it has on glucose levels in people who are insulin resistant. www.SciMar.ca

“I sat down, did some number questing and said, okay, 85% is going to be given away during my lifetime and the rest of thereafter. I sleep much better at nights. I do live comfortably, but there's a limit. I'd rather that money go to save lives.” - Jim Greenbaum Jim Greenbaum is the Founder and Managing Director of The Greenbaum Foundation. After college, Jim entered the workforce with one goal in mind - to make as much money as quickly as possible in order to use those funds to help make the world a better place. In 1985, Jim founded and became CEO of Access Long Distance. Less than a decade later he made the decision that he would leave the corporate world at the age of 40. Keeping true to the plan, he sold the company in 1999. Jim has committed to contributing in excess of 85% of his assets to charitable projects ending human and non-human suffering during his lifetime, and the remainder of his estate soon thereafter. The foundation’s assets will also be spent down during his lifetime. The Greenbaum Foundation focuses funding on effective and efficient projects working to bring about the end of human and non-human suffering in areas of the highest need and where they the most impact. During the early years the foundation focused solely on human rights, but have since shifted their efforts toward non-humans, and toward moving the world to whole foods plant-based diets and ending factory farming. Their portfolio also includes projects aimed at increasing the awareness, protection and improvement of the lives of all animals. Jim is also an Executive Producer of several documentaries, including “The Game Changers,” “What The Health,” "Cowspiracy," and "Not My Life." "Being a bystander to suffering is not an option." – Jim Greenbaum
Eric Church dropped a new song ten minutes before this episode was recorded. So, you could say there was a lot on the mind. Here are a couple things that were covered across (a pretty large) spectrum: The moral legality of fireworks. Dua Lipa. Taylor Swift’s new project. (Of the 15 new songs on the album, 6 of them got explicit stamps.) More on the Carl Lentz situation intro’d last week. Cadillac Jack’s Taylor problem. (By that we mean he consistently drops names throughout the episode. I’d tell you when they happen but I lost count.) Donna announcing Caddy’s new job. (It’ll be a stretch, but his first goal is to beat the 2020 revenue of a certain NBC star.) Moving into an NYC storefront for Christmas. The Times Person (or People) of the Year. Milton’s Pinestraw Bandit of the Year. Having folks come over to candle some ears.

In this episode, Ivan & Daniel discuss business intellectual property (IP). We explore whether giving it all away for free is the right approach as often promoted by important business and entrepreneurial figures such as Gary Vaynerchuk, aka Garyvee, and Kevin Hart. We dive into the “giving” and “documenting” your business ideas and IP vs protecting them. One wonders whether either approach is a good thing. Some entrepreneurs hold their cards close to their chest while others lay it all on the table. But which is the right way? The debate certainly goes on and the boys in true JTW fashion go on twists and bends in identifying the yay or nay to business IP retention or the open source models. Welcome back to the podcast, today I am answering more of your questions and today’s is quite a hot topic in the service based world. That question is, am I afraid of giving away my expertise for free? and I mean putting it all out there, not giving a little bit for free leading to a sales pitch, I’m talking about the content where you are showing up, being of service, giving value and giving your expertise in a free capacity. The misconception is that by giving expertise away for free your discouraging people from paying for your services, so I want to unpack that a bit more, and share how in my experience that is absolutely not true. I’ve seen a direct correlation between giving away my expertise and more people wanting to work with me. When we ask people to invest in us they need to be connected to us, to our expertise and trust that we do have the impact we say we do. So by giving them a taste of what you do you’re letting them in and showing them first hand your values and your work. However, I think there is a key difference in the way people engage with paid offerings and free content, and that is when people pay, they pay attention. I’ve experienced this in my business and I’ll share my examples with you but I truly believe in 'serve before you sell'. Once we understand that difference you begin to see you’re not giving it all away for free and doesn’t stop people working with you, it connects them to you and ultimately moves them towards that paid setting. _____ STAY CONNECTED Alice (aka me) | Instagram| Website| Podcast | Group Programmes
Most people are giving their power away, and not only are they unaware of it happening—they’re unaware of how it inhibits their spiritual progress. Learn what it means to give your power away, what it looks like, and how shifting this pattern is one of the most important steps on your spiritual journey.
Free content is how I've built a multi-million dollar business. And in this episode, I'm breaking down my content strategy and the value of giving it all away for free. I know my content strategy is confusing as heck to a lot of people :) “How do you expect people to buy from you if you give everything away for free?” Believe me, when I was first starting my business, the concept of giving away free content felt incredibly stupid when I was just trying to land one paying client. So, in this episode I'm sharing how you can create your content strategy in 2020! Let's dive in! What would you do if you just made 15 million dollars? Our guest Erik Bergman did just that. Two years ago, his first company went public. He made 15 million dollars, in one day, on his 28th birthday. Erik Bergman is now 31, lives and works in Malta. Born and raised in Sweden, he comes from an ordinary family. His parents managed to send him to a fancy private school. Unfortunately, he always felt like “the poor kid” in a place where he didn’t belong. That experience that had a big impact on his self-esteem and gave him the drive to make money, a lot of it. In this episode, Erik talks to us about: How he was able to make 15 million dollars and how it impacted his behaviors towards personal and professional life Why he started Great.com (and how much he paid for this crazy rare domain) His origin stories growing up in Sweden His philanthropic endeavors and where he has contributed his money and time How you can make the most of your money and effort working for nonprofit And an unrelated note - sex and relationship After Erik made his fortune, he helped build a school in Ghana (in western Africa). After that trip, he started to plan his future and figure out the best way to contribute. So he started engaging in various projects and he started reading up on things. Erik knows deep down and there’s something he does best which is making money. His new plan and possibly a project of a lifetime is to make money, and give everything away. This is the story of Great.com, a controversial charity about making money, and giving it away. Beside money, making the world a better place, Erik also has researched and read quite a bit about sex and relationship. He shared his own stories and a list of incredible resources. People don’t talk about sex, not even in private relationships. Erik felt that he had a lot to learn. It comes down to one simple thing: How can we learn to truly love and respect ourselves? Please join Erik Bergman and me on the Feisworld Podcast today. And hope you’ll share this conversation with one more person. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/feisworld/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/feisworld/support

At 19 years-old, Engelo Rumora had been out of school for 5 years and was a successful soccer player...but his future was anything but certain. Contemplating what was next, Engelo came to the conclusion that being a soccer player was not a steady way to make a living. He decided to hang-up the cleats and venture down a new path that would offer him financial freedom by the time he was 30! After trying a couple of different vehicles in investing, Engelo settled on real estate. This decision not only changed his life, but has impacted the lives of so many others! Now, at the young age of 31, Engelo is a thriving investor who has purchased, renovated, and sold more than 500 properties. He currently owns properties in Croatia, Japan, The Bahamas...to name just a few! Although he could easily settle into a comfortable retirement, Engelo decided to give back by giving FREE houses to those in need. Listen as Engelo shares his thrilling story about a near-death experience while renovating his first purchase, uprooting his life in Sydney and starting from scratch in America, and how he is giving back. His is a truly warm, inspiring story about an investor who is making a difference by giving it all away. Lessons Learned Instead of following the usual “American Dream,” ask yourself: What is my dream? Then, go out and make your own path. Remember that networking is your net worth. Before you jump into something such as real estate, it is vital to form connections and gather first-hand information. Real estate is a thrilling vehicle to get involved in. Finding a property, renovating it, and then selling it gives a feeling of accomplishment that other investing vehicles do not offer. The majority of what you learn in life is through trial and error, not just picking up a book and studying a topic. Do not think just because you did not go to school or study to be in real estate you cannot jump into the field. Prior jobs and experiences can shape the investor you become. You will not hit a home run with every property you invest in, especially when first starting-out in real estate, but if you learn from every experience and improve you will become successful in the long-run. When entering the venture of real estate, most people want to earn enough to support themselves and their family. After you get to that point, the focus shifts to helping others support themselves. Don't be so hard on yourself when you make mistakes; every day brings a new start with new opportunities. If you allow for all the hits you take in real estate to affect you, that feeling will keep building and have a negative impact on your business and on you personally. Accept the mistakes you make, learn from them, and move forward. Links Mentioned OhioCashflow.com EngeloRumora.com

Why do companies allow themselves to become disintermediated by Google? Worse yet - companies such as Yelp and Glassdoor voluntarily share their value-added content with Google, in many cases obviating the need for customers to visit their respective websites. This for sure will result in users contributing less content (reviews) both in the case of Yelp and Glassdoor - diluting the value of each. CEORater: CEO & Company Profiles. SHOW NOTES...You find the thing you love to do, and you learn about it, you go after it and that's what you do- that's what you're meant to do.I spent a lot of time in the Word and spent a lot of time figuring out that my identity is not defined by what I do, but who I am and who I am in Christ. On Photography:No matter how much technical skill you have it's not going to replace an artistic eye. Your skill doesn't always equal talent in your field. On Heroism:It challenged me to try to be that person myself to go from crisis to crisis and still maintain that sort of servant hood. It taught me to be a little more selfless. On Surrogacy: If we can name the reasons not to do something and they all have to do with fear, then to us, that's the red flag that we need to do it. Because we feel like our biggest growth spiritually as a couple and as a family happens when we go as deep out as we can possible get into the water. It was a lesson in teaching her how to fear less and for me how to learn how to be more cautious... sort of a coming together of different personalities. It's easy to say you're going to go deep, but then when you're there and in the fire...Those moments of doubt and you're in the deep and you cant touch the floor and your just treading water- its in those instances that you know that you have to depend on God. In the shallow water you can take care of yourself but in the deep you cant and that's when you know you need a savior. Being in the deep and having to rely on God to really just give you the strength for the final pushes. God gives you the amount of strength you need for every occasion. He gives you what you need for the season you're in. Not too much not too little. Everybody can stay int he shallow water and be safe and have a fine life, but your not going to understand the depth of who God is and How much He loves you and how much closer you can know who He is unless you go to the deep and you can know Him.LINKS:Find Ashley's Photography here! Welcome to Flex Your Heart Radio! This podcast is about body, fat and gender positivity, fitness, feminism, recovery, risk, and crushing it at life. On this episode, we talk to one of my personal fitness heroes, Courtney Marshall! Courtney is a former English and Women's Studies professor turned community-accountable feminist fitness instructor and personal trainer. Along the way she got interested in body positivity, but now she falls solidly in the fat positive camp- and she does think there's a big difference between the two. She is a member of the Body Positive Fitness Alliance and want to open a feminist fitness facility one day. She fully expects to go broke doing this work, because her goal is almost always to give it all away for free. She can't wait to tell you why! In this podcast we discuss: - How Courtney handles people food shaming themselves or shit talking their bodies - What anti-racist, feminist fitness entails - The joy of giving her work away for free, and how free access to fitness enriches the giver just as much as the recipient and so much more! You all know by now that we have built Think Creative Collective on the “free-free-free marry me” model. We talk about it all the time. It is basically built on a foundation of giving a whole bunch of content, knowledge, and strategy away for free so we can build a community of addicted and raving fans. People often think that if they give so much away it is going to decrease the amount of sales they are ultimately going to get, and we have seen literally the opposite effect. It has only helped us grow our audience and our sales. It has also enabled us to create a community where our audience can be sure to find the answers they need instead of a dead-end, and people really value that. So what we want to talk about today is why we decided to use that model and how you can structure your own business to do the same. We also want to go over why it is very important to bust the myths behind giving away content for free. Inside this episode we will focus on answering all of y’awls questions surrounding the topic and give you the inside scoop about the actual effects to our business that this model has created for us so you can be more confident in what you are providing your audience, for free. Do you make decisions based on what's in alignment with the highest intention for yourself, or do you make them based on fear. One path almost always leads to turmoil, and the other leads to getting what you want out of life almost every time. In segment two, what do you do when you start to have feelings for a good friend? And what if they don't have feelings back? Can you keep this kind of friendship or are you doomed for disappointment? I read a letter from someone going through this right now. It can be a huge challenge to have an authentic friendship when there's an underlying desire. During the closing of the show, I share a little behind the scenes of how I succeed at The Overwhelmed Brain and still give away everything I know for free. Today's episode is brought to you by . Since then they've been the best restaurant in the area working with top ingredients and serving French inspired food to local acclaim. Part 1 of my conversation with guest Ric Dube as we look at the career of '70s pop star Leo Sayer. I've also got music from Nude Beach, The Vaselines and Happy You. Show notes: - Recorded at More Lost Time world HQ - Check out our new web series Trust Fund Challenge - Just watched the 1969 grindhouse flick The Babysitter - Rated X then, pretty tame by today's standards - Our society's pruder in some ways, more open in others - Leo Sayer was discovered by David Courtney and Adam Faith - Ric: Sayer was less threatening than Elton John or Barry Manilow - Adam Faith was a British teen idol in early '60s - Sayer and Faith had a falling out over money - Sayer struck out at first - Roger Daltrey recorded a Sayer song - Sayer's version of "Giving It All Away" sounds like Elton - Some weird album covers - Dube: Sayer looked like a mime who sings - British guys who sound American and vice versa - To be continued Music: Nude Beach - For You The Vaselines - Last Half Hour Happy You - Chummy Completely Conspicuous is available through the iTunes podcast directory.
