What do a classical pianist, a filmmaker, and a CEO have in common? In this week's episode of Hiring Matters, Ken Schmitt dives into the fascinating mind of Jieho Lee—CEO, Chief People Officer, and movie director. From ivory keys to boardrooms, Jieho takes us on a wild ride, showing us how the skills he developed on the movie set translate directly to leading a diverse and dynamic workforce. Cue the drama! Ken and Jieho hash out the great debate: Should company culture be more "work hard, play hard" à la Netflix, or should we strive for something a little more, dare we say, fun? Jieho argues that a workplace should spark joy, not dread, while Ken questions if the tough-love, performance-driven environment is a necessary evil. Expect a few verbal eye rolls and some serious food for thought. Together, they dig into managing a multi-generational workforce. Spoiler alert: Boomers, Gen Z, and everyone in between don't all want the same things from their jobs (shocking, we know). So, how do you balance these diverse expectations without losing your sanity? Jieho and Ken tackle it head-on, offering insights, laughs, and even a few leadership facepalms along the way. Whether you're managing egos on a movie set or in a boardroom, creating a safe, collaborative space is essential. And Jieho's secret sauce? Humility, reflection, and realizing that even CEOs (and directors) are only as good as the teams they lead. Tune in for a conversation packed with humor, hard truths, and a fresh perspective on how to lead, hire, and retain top talent—whether you're running a company or filming the next blockbuster. Key Takeaways: Artsy types make great CEOs (who knew?). Classical music taught Jieho the importance of harmony—literally and figuratively. Is fun the new productivity? Multi-generational management: It's like herding cats but with more Slack messages. Cultural fit or diversity of thought? Hint: You need both. A good leader knows how to adapt and evolve. The best leader? Knows how to laugh through it. Have questions or personal experiences? Drop us a message or Join the conversation on LinkedIn.—share your own hiring and retention horror stories, tips, and even your craziest leadership moments. We'd love to hear what's happening on your workplace “movie set”! About Our Guest: Jieho Lee is a visionary filmmaker and entrepreneur best known for writing and directing The Air I Breathe (2007), featuring a star-studded cast that includes Forest Whitaker, Andy Garcia, Brendan Fraser, Kevin Bacon, and Sarah Michelle Gellar. Lee's cinematic portfolio also includes A Nursery Tale (1999) and the highly anticipated Kane & Lynch. Before making his mark in the film industry, Lee directed high-profile commercials for brands such as Ralph Lauren, Victoria's Secret, and Tommy Hilfiger. Beyond filmmaking, Jieho co-founded Knighted Ventures, a specialized company serving the casino industries in California and Florida. His entrepreneurial spirit also led him to Blue Horizon Capital, where he co-led an investment strategy team focusing on business acquisitions. Prior to that, Lee oversaw business development and marketing in Asia for POM Wonderful. His career began in the entertainment field as a classical music producer, collaborating with legends like Yo-Yo Ma and Isaac Stern, and producing a best-selling album for soprano Sumi Jo, earning him the South Korean Presidential Award for Excellence. A graduate of Wesleyan University with degrees in Letters and Cinema Studies, Lee also holds an MBA from Harvard Business School. In 2022, I was asked to contribute to a symposium at Yale Law School on the question, "How can the humanities inform tech policy and design to promote 'healthier' discourse and democracy online?" The ultimate result was this article, published in the 2023 symposium issue of the Yale Journal of Law and the Humanities. A scanned pdf of the article can be found as an attachment here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/100047377 I also gave a short presentation at the symposium in 2022; since visual evidence is important to the argument of this article, I hope to expand upon the slides that I used in that presentation in order to produce a video with a full-length visual track to accompany the article. When Katy Henriksen was featured on Op. 9 of TRILLOQUY back in 2019, she was a local radio host working to take western classical music out of the "old, white guy realm". Today, Katy is an entrepreneur who works as a promoter, journalist, writer and podcaster creating content that challenges the status quo. She returns to TRILLOQUY to chat with Garrett about the self-employed life, the challenges that COVID puts on concert promotion, and her podcast, "Sound Off". Scott honors the first Black woman to be crowned Miss Ireland, and speaks to an oratorio by Courtney Bryan. And Garrett spends the final movement exploring the concept of "music-ing" and how a western classical training stands in the way of discovering one's own artistic voice. He's worked with Sumi Jo, Kiri Te Kanawa, Placido Domingo, and in March and April 2021 he's conducting La Traviata's triumphant return to Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour. Today’s episode is an interview I did with Ira Siff, artistic director of La Gran Scena Opera Company di New York, alter ego of the beloved “traumatic soprano” Vera Galupe-Borszkh, lecturer for the Metropolitan Opera Guild and Weekly Commentator on the Metropolitan Opera broadcasts. My association with Ira and Gran Scena goes back more than thirty years, when he provided me with my first employment as a singer when my alter ego Daniela della Scarpone sang for two years with the renowned travesty opera company. I sat down with Ira in his East Village apartment last this past January for a wide-ranging interview in which we discuss his early days as a standee at the old Met (where some of his opera-going experiences included Maria Callas’s final Tosca performances, Renata Scotto’s 1965 debut as Madama Butterfly, and Leonie Rysanek’s wild traversals of Verdi and Wagner). He discusses his first performing experiences in the early 1970s in association with Al Carmines and others, the genesis of La Gran Scena and their development into a worldwide phenomenon, and his subsequent “legitimate” career as lecturer, stage director, vocal coach and voice teacher and commentator all stemmed from in his words, “getting in a dress and singing soprano,” which he dubs “the strangest part.” This is a free-wheeling and extremely Opera Queeny interview, peppered with Ira’s unique anecdotes and snippets from Gran Scena (and other!) performances. There is no better way to celebrate Gay Pride in isolation than to listen to this episode! Ira Siff is a native New Yorker, who grew up on the standing room line of the old Metropolitan Opera, worshiping the famous singers of the 60’s. A graduate of the Cooper Union, with a degree in Fine Arts, Mr. Siff began to study voice, and made his debut as a tenor in 1970. For the next decade, he performed roles in opera, operetta and musicals in the New York, at The New York Shakespeare Festival, Circle in the Square, Playwrights Horizons, and many other venues. Turning to cabaret, Ira created an act using vocal parody of opera, jazz, and other styles of music, gaining critical acclaim, and a loyal following. In 1981, he founded La Gran Scena Opera Co. di New York, the internationally acclaimed travesty troupe, whose gifted falsetto “divas” have spoofed opera with great affection for over two decades, in New York annually, and on tours to some of the great festivals, theatres and opera houses of the world. For the past thirty years, Mr. Siff has been a voice teacher and interpretive coach, teaching in New York, Italy, Israel, Holland and China, giving Master Classes for the Metropolitan Opera Guild, and was on the faculty of the Renata Scotto Vocal Academy. Ira was a guest teacher of bel canto technique at The Royal Conservatory in Den Haag in 2008, and then at the Dutch National Opera Academy for five seasons, and at the Amsterdam Conservatory in The Netherlands where he returned annually, and was appointed Permanent Guest Teacher. In 2000, he turned to stage directing, gaining critical acclaim for his productions of operas ranging from Tosca, Turandot, and La Fanciulla del West to Lakmé, Werther, and La Grande Duchesse de Gérolstein at venues such as Carnegie Hall, Sarasota Opera, The Caramoor Festival, and the Tanglewood Music Festival, where he directed productions of Così fan tutte, Don Giovanni, and Ariadne auf Naxos. All in all, he has directed operas for companies in New Jersey to New Zealand, with stops along the way in Puerto Rico, Lima, Peru and Utah. Singers whom he has directed include Sumi Jo, Dolora Zajick, Aprile Millo, Eglise Gutierrez, Krassimira Stoyanova, and the late Marcello Giordani. Conductors with whom he has collaborated as a stage director have included Richard Bonynge, Christoph von Dohnányi, and James Levine. He has also given master classes in bel canto and verismo for the Metropolitan Opera Guild every season since 2008 and has presented sold-out lectures for the M...

What does it mean to “hack away the unessentials”? “It is not daily increase but daily decrease, hack away the unessential. The closer to the source, the less wastage there is.” Bruce Lee applied this primarily to his martial art, but also in life, heading towards simplicity of movement, thought, and being. “Avoid the superficial, penetrate the complex, go to the heart of the problem, and pinpoint the key factors.” “Do not beat around the bush. Do not take winding detours. Follow a straight line to the objective; simplicity is the shortest distance between two points.” This doesn’t mean take the shortest route, but ask in real life what is unnecessary. “Scratch away all the dirt your being has accumulated and reveal reality in its nakedness.” We accumulate this dirt as protection and security, and it’s not easily shed. There are so many distractions clothed as things to make your life easier, but they distract and clutter instead. “It is not difficult to trim and hack off the nonessentials in outward, physical structure. However, to minimize inwardly, is another matter.” Practice minimizing inwardly by clearing your physical space and then taking that practice inward and clearing your mind of negative thoughts. “To obtain enlightenment means the extinction of everything which obscures the “real life.” At the same time it implies boundless expansion.” “The spirit is by nature, formless, and no “objects” are to be harbored in it. When anything is harbored there, psychic energy loses its balance, its native activity becomes cramped, and it no longer flows with the stream. Where the energy is tipped, there is too much of it in one direction and a shortage of it in another direction. But when the spirit harbors nothing in it, nor is it tipped in one direction, it transcends.” Take Action: Examine your life and ask, “Am I living the life I want to live? Where are areas where could I have more joy?” What can you let go of? How can you be more direct? How can you un-clutter your environment? #BruceLeePodcastChallenge The challenge ended Monday, and we are now accepting your entries until Friday evening, June 30th, 2017. Enter here: brucelee.com/podcastchallenge #AAHA Sumi Jo is a Grammy Award-winning South Korean lyric coloratura soprano. In 1983, Jo decided to leave SNU in order to study music in Italy at the Academia di Santa Cecilia in Rome. In August 1986, she was unanimously awarded first prize in the Carlo Alberto Cappelli International Competition in Verona, one of the most important contests, open only to first-prize winners of other major competitions. In 1986, Jo made her European operatic debut as Gilda in Verdi’s Rigoletto at the Teatro Comunale Giuseppe Verdi in Trieste. Simple Song Number 3, written by David Lang, performed by Jo, and featured in Paolo Sorrentino’s 2015 film Youth, was nominated for an Academy Award in 2016 in the Best Song category. Jo was invited to the ceremony and attended, but she was not invited to perform the song. Jo and Lang voiced their disappointment with the producers’ decision to exclude the song, indirectly referencing the controversy relate to that year’s Academy Awards lack of racial diversity. Thank you for sharing your talent Sumi Jo, we think you’re awesome! #BruceLeeMoment From listener Francisco: “My Bruce Lee moment was when I got tattooed "Be like water" in my arm. It was a time when I was going through a lot of things in my job, my relationships and my vision of the world that is very vicious and dangerous…This quote helped me to be flexible, adapt and not react but understand other’s people intentions and where they come from and build confidence and mindfulness in my relationships with the world that I used to see as harsh, but now I see it as an adventure and daily challenge that makes me better.” Share your #AAHAs, #BruceLeeMoments, and #TakeAction progress with us at hello@brucelee.com Find the full version of our show notes at BruceLee.com/podcast
