Featuring: Dr. Christopher C. Harmon, IWP Professor and Brute Krulak Center for Innovation and Future Warfare Distinguished Fellow at Marine Corps University. About the Lecture: Terrorist groups have used a fantastic variety of means to seize attention, explain themselves, and seek recruits and support: song and speech, “guerrilla theater,” leaflets, radio, cable TV, newspapers, print ads, books, videos, web sites, e-zines… Social media is only their latest endeavor. This training will cover the modern terrorist propaganda techniques being used today so you can recognize them in your work. This training is developed from the recent book: The Terrorist Argument. The Terrorist Argument: Modern Advocacy and Propaganda, a recent book for the Brookings Institution, is a highly original merging of media studies & terrorism studies. Christopher C. Harmon and Randall G. Bowdish paired a medium of strategic communication with a named terrorist group. Examined in successive chapters are propaganda works of nationalists such as the Algerians and Irish; Maoists; secular Iranian dissidents; eco-terrorists, and other groups such as the potent Islamist organizations Hezbollah, Al Qaeda, and ISIS. Highlights from this multi-year study will be offered in an illustrated lecture and Q&A session by the lead author, Dr. Harmon of the Institute of World Politics. About the Speaker: Dr. Christopher C. Harmon ran counterterrorism studies programs for the U. S. government in two of our Defense Department's regional academic centers (Garmisch Germany & Honolulu Hawaii). His work on “how terrorist groups end” was explored in a lecture series in the Washington, D.C. area from 2004 onward, with overseas dates including INTERPOL headquarters in Lyon, France (2010). Dr. Harmon is the lead author or editor of seven books about revolutionary warfare, insurgency, terrorism, or counterterrorism. The latest is just now out from Marine Corps University Press, entitled Warfare in Peacetime. ***Learn more about IWP graduate programs: https://www.iwp.edu/academic-programs/ ***Make a gift to IWP: https://interland3.donorperfect.net/weblink/WebLink.aspx?name=E231090&id=18

Fr. Zach and Fr. Drew Mabee, brothers in the priesthood and brothers biologically, discuss their conversions to Catholicism, their journeys to the priesthood, and how they grow in faith and fraternity together. Show notes: (0:33) Fr. Craig introduces this month's guests, Fr. Drew and Fr. Zach Mabee, who are brothers not only through their vocation, but are siblings. Fr. Zach is a priest in the Diocese of Lansing, and Fr. Drew serves in the Archdiocese of Detroit. (1:40) Fr. Zach shares that he is teaching at Sacred Heart Major Seminary this year and updates that he is completing his doctorate in philosophy this year as well. Fr. Drew shares an anecdote about growing up with Fr. Zach as his taller older brother. (6:17) Fr. Drew shares updates and blessings in his life, including his assignments at St. John Fisher and St. Damien of Molokai parishes. He talks about the grace of being stretched outside his comfort zone as a priest. (9:42) Fr. David gives his own updates, including the students returning to Divine Child for school and celebrating his birthday. Fr. Craig reflects on his summer and attending the Summer Seminar with Archbishop Vigneron. (14:08) Fr. Zach begins telling his vocation story, sharing how he converted to Catholicism and the models of the priesthood and campus ministry groups he encountered throughout his education that led him to discern his vocation. (30:11) Fr. Drew reflects on his thoughts and feelings when Fr. Zach shared his intentions of becoming Catholic and becoming a priest. He then shares his own experience being drawn to the Catholic faith and, eventually, the priesthood. (1:00:32) Fr. Craig asks about Fr. Drew and Fr. Zach's lives together as brothers and as brother priests, and how they share their experiences of priesthood and ministry with one another. They reflect, too, on the beauty of having been brought to the Lord through other people and how different each man's experience can be when discerning a priestly vocation. (1:07:00) The priests discuss where they find fraternity and fellowship in their lives these days and how those friendships help them grow as people and as priests. Fr. Zach and Fr. Drew then give advice to young men discerning the priesthood, emphasizing the importance of prayer, attending Mass, and sincerity in conversation with God. (1:15:35) They close in prayer.
This episode is part two of our - potentially controversial - discussion relating to those persons who try their absolute darndest to screw with the things we like, so join in and listen to our wacky opinions.Tolkien Society 2021 Summer SeminarJoin us next week as we talk about, not Moons of Madness as we state in the podcast, but HP Lovecraft in general in our introduction to our series about HP Lovecraft, his mythology, and things we enjoy from other creators that take place within that mythology.
Mark Twain once said that history doesn't repeat itself, but it does rhyme. The repetition of patterns of events and responses is one reason that scholars and policymakers often turn to the past for insight into how to best deal with contemporary events. It is also why classic works of history and strategy — such as Thucydides' The History of the Peloponnesian War — have become classic and remain relevant. In this episode of Horns of a Dilemma, Dr. Paul Edgar, associate director of the Clements Center at the University of Texas, Austin, goes 1,000 years before Thucydides to find enduring lessons as told in an inscription on a statue from the 15th century BCE. While the names of the rulers and powers may not be familiar, Edgar illustrates how the themes of strategy, alliance, and statecraft in great-power competition are familiar and relevant to power struggles today. This talk was recorded at the Summer Seminar on History and Statecraft, sponsored by the Clements Center at the University of Texas, Austin, and held in Beaver Creek, Colorado.
The history of nuclear weapons is, thankfully, largely a history of things that haven't happened. Since 1945, nuclear weapons have dominated strategy and statecraft, but they have not been used after the first two bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Professor Frank Gavin of Johns Hopkins School for Advanced International Studies, and Chair of the Texas National Security Review editorial board, discusses the history and politics of nuclear strategy and statecraft. His talk is both wide-ranging and specific. Gavin examines the big issues related to nuclear weapons, and the paradoxes of strategy that possession of nuclear weapons creates — such as the fact that the only way to ensure that these terrible weapons are never used is to appear to be credibly poised to use them. This talk was presented as part of the Summer Seminar on History and Statecraft sponsored by the Clements Center at the University of Texas, Austin, and held at Beaver Creek, Colorado.

Keri and Carter return from celebrating Keri's wedding, but after the wedding tales are complete they dive into some current events. First, they discuss President Biden's efforts to get Americans to spy on each other, because the apparatus of an authoritarian state isn't fully constructed just yet. Next, they note the retirement of Five Nights at Freddy's creator Scott Cawthorn, who had come under pressure recently for donating to political candidates that are haven't been approved by the angry leftist mob. They discuss the disturbing involvement of the FBI in manufacturing a plot to kidnap Michigan governor Gretchen Whitmer, along with recent revelations regarding a number of "unindicted co-conspirators" (potential FBI agents or informants) in the January 6th riot at the Capitol building. Finally, they review the upcoming agenda for The Tolkien Society's Summer Seminar, which reads like a list of ridiculous Grievance Study presentations. The Book of Mormon warns against mistaking intelligence for wisdom, but adds a crucial caveat: “to be learned is good if they hearken unto the counsels of God” (2 Nephi 9:29). Where LDS founding prophet Joseph Smith declared that a person is saved no faster than they get knowledge, historian Richard Bushman adds a corollary: A person gains knowledge no faster than they are saved. Bushman believes historical inquiry has made him a better Mormon, but he also believes being a Mormon has made him a better historian, too. In this episode, Bushman gets autobiographical about his biography of Joseph Smith, talks about the rise of Mormon studies, and offers his perspective on the relationship between personal faith and professional scholarship. Bushman is one of the most distinguished and respected historians ever to call The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints his religious home. It was a real treat to sit down with him to talk about his career, his personal faith, his difficulties and successes. This episode coincides with the publication of To Be Learned Is Good: Essays on Faith and Scholarship in Honor of Richard Lyman Bushman. The book contains the edited proceedings of a 2016 scholars' colloquium held in Bushman's honor at Brigham Young University. Bushman wanted Latter-day Saint scholars to reflect on their work in the presence of non-LDS scholars, to think through the difficult issues in ways that spoke to larger questions about faith and reason. Learn more about the book or watch video of the presentations at mi.byu.edu/bushman. Learn more about the Summer Seminar on Mormon Culture here. About the Guest Richard Lyman Bushman is Gouverneur Morris Professor of History Emeritus at Columbia University and author of Joseph Smith: Rough Stone Rolling. He occupied the Howard W. Hunter Chair of Mormon Studies at Claremont Graduate University in California from 2008 to 2011. Before joining the faculty at Columbia University, Bushman received his BA and PhD degrees from Harvard University and taught at Brigham Young University, Brown University, Boston University, Harvard University (as a visiting professor), and the University of Delaware. Bushman has served as president of the Mormon History Association, as a member of the board of editors of the Encyclopedia of Mormonism, as a council member for the Institute of Early American History and Culture, and as president of the Society for Historians of the Early American Republic. He chaired the advisory committee to the Joseph Fielding Smith Institute for Latter-day Saint History at Brigham Young University, 1999–2004; and he chaired the board of directors of the Mormon Scholars Foundation until 2016. He is currently a member of the National Advisory Board for the Joseph Smith Papers project of the History Department of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, having served as a general editor from the project's founding until 2013.The post “To be learned is good,” with Richard Bushman [MIPodcast #75] appeared first on Neal A. Latter-day Saint scholar Terryl L. Givens is back with us again. Dr. Givens spent the summer here at the Institute as a Neal A. Maxwell fellow. It was a real treat to have Terryl here in the building, and he sat down with MIPodcast host Blair Hodges to talk about the second and final book in his “Foundations of Mormon Thought” series from Oxford University Press. The book is called Feeding the Flock, focusing on Church and Praxis. The first volume covered LDS theology, while this volume zeroes in on LDS church sacraments and structure. About the Guest Terryl L. Givens holds the Jabez A. Bostwick Chair of English at the University of Richmond. He was a 2017 Neal A. Maxwell Fellow at the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship where he co-directed the Summer Seminar on Mormon Culture. Terryl is one of the most prolific authors of books on Mormonism, including People of Paradox, By the Hand of Mormon, Wrestling the Angel, and Feeding the Flock: The Foundations of Mormon Thought: Church and Praxis. Together with his wife Fiona he's also written a number of books for LDS audiences including The God Who Weeps, The Crucible of Doubt, and their latest, The Christ Who Heals. He's currently working on a biography of Mormon intellectual Eugene England. The post Feeding the Flock, with Terryl L. Givens [MIPodcast #74] appeared first on Neal A. Maxwell Institute | BYU.
In some ways it's been a lonelier than usual summer at the Maxwell Institute. Since it was founded in 2006 we've had the privilege of hosting the Summer Seminar on Mormon Culture, a remarkable research opportunity that is somewhat legendary for the people that have passed through it, like Reid Neilson of the Church History Library, Patrick Mason and Kathleen Flake who hold chairs in Mormon Studies at universities on the east and west coast, and the Institute's brand new executive director, Spencer Fluhman. Students, scholars, junior faculty—a variety of different people come together to study a particular aspect of Mormon culture or history and then write working papers to share some of the things they discovered and prompt further research. In lieu of the seminar this year the Institute hosted a scholars' colloquium in honor of Richard Bushman, the Mormon historian who started the Summer Seminar back in 1997 when he was working on his acclaimed biography of Joseph Smith. Richard is still active in his studies, but he'll be leaving the direction of summer seminars in the capable hands of Terryl Givens and possibly others going forward. This 50th episode of the Maxwell Institute Podcast will give you a sense of what the Summer Seminar is all about. Last summer I sat down with some of the participants to talk about their experiences and the papers they were working on. Their papers are now available—along with most of the seminar papers going back to 2006 when the seminar came to the Maxwell Institute—at mi.byu.edu/summerseminar.The post The Summer Seminar on Mormon Culture, 2015 [MIPodcast #50] appeared first on Neal A.
