A couple of episodes ago, we talked Ang Lee’s Hulk. So what better choice this week than its successor, the 2008 semi-sequel The Incredible Hulk? We compare it to Lee’s version, talk about the things that set it apart, and about how it’s the redheaded step-child of the MCU. Also: we react to the news that Jared Leto is returning as the Joker in Snyder’s Justice League. And we have…thoughts.
When Constantine starring Keanu Reeves came out, fans of the character were pissed because of how different it was from the comics. But in retrospect, it's actually a pretty damn good movie. We talk Keanu's career, Derrick's thoughts on Shia LaBeouf, and Peter Stormare's take on Lucifer.
Frank Miller's take on The Spirit opens with Gabriel Macht and Samuel L. Jackson fighting in a pool of literal crap...and that's really the perfect metaphor for this movie. It's the first film the guys review that they hate, and Perry swears to one day make Derrick pay for forcing him to watch it.
They say the book is always better than the movie, but that’s definitely NOT the case with Captain America: Civil War. Perry and Derrick go in-depth into all the amazing character dynamics, the introductions of Black Panther and Spider-Man into the MCU, one of the best villains yet, and—of course—the big-ass airport fight scene!
In this episode, we discuss the loss of Chadwick Boseman, what he meant to the world, and then switch it up to talk about Derrick’s pick, The Cobbler. Think an Adam Sandler film where he changes into different people using their shoes seems an odd choice for a podcast about superhero movies? Think again.

Will franchises like Marvel, DC, James Bond, and Star Wars migrate an increasing amount of their stories to streaming platforms? And what could this mean for the future of BIPOC projects? MFA Book Month concludes this week with journalist, author and Empire podcast geek queen Helen O'Hara joining me for a journey through the music of superhero cinema, from John Williams' magisterial score for SUPERMAN: THE MOVIE through to Kendrick Lamar's BLACK PANTHER soundtrack and much in between. We discuss the evolution from theme driven symphonic scores to the intense blare of Hans Zimmer, the use of pop music in superhero films from Prince's BATMAN music to the toe-tapping GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, how Marvel found its footing with the scores of the MCU after a slightly muddled beginning and we plug Helen's new book THE ULTIMATE SUPERHERO MOVIE GUIDE. We also get into it about JOKER (no spoilers), what almost drove Helen off Twitter, I offer some lightly controversial takes and it all ends on a very silly note.

Summer is known for popcorn entertainment, boasting blockbuster films that are meant to be enjoyed with little thought about their message or theme. Starship Troopers is not one of those films. Though it was billed as a straight forward, science fiction action shoot-em-up (just watch the trailer)—and it certainly works as one—Starship Troopers is much more. It's an evocative take on the dangers of a society fueled by war and a populace indoctrinated by powerful, omnipresent propaganda. Directed by Paul Verhoeven (RoboCop, Total Recall, Basic Instinct, among others)—who'd grown up in Nazi-occupied Netherlands—the film is a satirical interpretation of Robert Heinlein's pro-war novel of the same name. That fact is an important one. Every bit of this film is intentional. From the "Would you like to know more?" commercials on state-run TV to the incredibly handsome cast, Verhoeven styled his movie to mirror that of a Nazi propaganda film from the 1930s. And it's brilliant. Unfortunately, that is not how it was received. Upon its release, Verhoeven's message sailed largely over the heads of both audiences and critics, sending the film's box office receipts down "wash out" lane (It grossed roughly $120 million worldwide on a budget of $105). But that failure does not define it. Since its mediocre theatrical run, it has steadily garnered a following, which, as we discuss, is a great thing. There is no better time to see Starship Troopers than the present. Literally. So sit back, grab an Elysian's Immortal IPA, prepare to slug it out with hordes of angry alien bugs, and enjoy as I, the Thunderous Wizard (@WriterTLK), Capt. Cash, and Chumpzilla do our parts for the preservation of mankind! This Week's Segments: Introduction – We break down the film's superb satirical take on fascist propaganda.
