Unless you've been living under a rock, you know that leadership has changed. Not just because of our recent pandemic, but because of what research is telling us works, and what employees are demanding from their workplace cultures. But when we say we have to "redefine leadership", what does that actually mean? It means killing the notion of the command and control "Alpha Leader" and understanding that today's complex business challenges demand a more collaborative approach driven by empathy. My guest today is leadership expert Danielle Harlan. She shares what this new vision of leadership means to you, how you can increase your empathy and effectiveness, and also what your organization can do to foster a more empathetic and inclusive environment that translates into success. Key Takeaways:Technology has been a key piece in making things more transparent. It also gives us the ability to ask more interesting questions and better understand what people are wanting from the businesses they buy from. Apologize when you hurt someone or a group. Acknowledge it and move forward, but apologize, even when it wasn't the intent to cause harm. You can increase your empathy by engaging in media - read fiction, watch shows, listen to music - and try to understand those perspectives that differ from your own.  "Our concept of leadership is really expanding. It's more relational, more collective, and there's a strong ethical and justice-oriented component." - Danielle Harlan About Danielle Harlan, Founder & CEO, Center for Advancing Leadership and Human Potential:As the Founder and CEO of the Center for Advancing Leadership and Human Potential, Danielle Harlan, Ph.D., is on a mission to transform leadership for the modern world. Innovation is such a buzzword in many companies and organizations, but how often do we think about innovating our organizations and the way they run? What if your organization had no managers? What if everyone was committed to a mission, stepped up to lead, and collaborated effectively, with honesty, to get things done and move forward? It's not a pipe dream. It's possible and many organizations are making it happen with great results today. In my conversation today with Brent Lowe and Susan Basterfield, two of the authors of Lead Together, we answer these questions and look at new, innovative ways of running these organizations. We'll talk about what it means to be a Lead Together organization, dispel myths about what it means to remove job titles and managers, and what are the most critical skills required by everyone involved to truly make this work.  Key Takeaways:Anytime you throw people into an equation, things become unpredictable. We need to be present and aware of that in a way that allows everybody to bring all of who they are to the problem. That is a way to start leading together. It is more about roles than about job descriptions. Job descriptions are a static document, roles are dynamic and can change as people can have multiple roles at the same time.To make a Lead Together organization work, everyone on the team must make the commitment - together.  "There needs to be a willingness to do the work, and to see the workplace as somewhere where we go, not just to do the task that's in front of us, but also to develop our own skills." — Brent Lowe About Brent Lowe and Susan Basterfield, co-authors of Leading Together:Brent Lowe is a performance coach helping leaders show up as their best selves within thriving, purpose-driven teams. Brent Lowe, Susan Basterfield, and Travis Marsh are authors and coaches with more than fifty years of combined experience helping founders and leaders unleash the human potential of their teams. They’ve worked with groups like Blue Ant Media, Jack.org, and Bullfrog Power to help them build collaborative culture and scale sustainably. Their new book, Lead Together (available 11/12/20 - PageTwo), explores their shared belief that an invested, empathetic leadership style has the power to utterly transform an organization, and society as a whole, for the better. This book explores topical questions such as: What happens when our current systems begin to fail us, when individuals revolt against a lack of opportunity, or when pandemics mushroom because of a lack of clarity, unity, or cooperation? This thought-provoking, status quo-shattering book challenges the reader to consider a braver, bolder, and more empathy-driven way of leading and working. Recorded LIVE on LinkedIn and YouTube - Brent, Susan and Travis are fittingly ALL TOGETHER AS THEY connect with Lou Diamond on Thrive LOUD. *** CONNECT TO LOU DIAMOND: www.loudiamond.net SUBSCRIBE TO THRIVELOUD: www.thriveloud.com/podcast
