This week's SmallBites is a round table with Jonathan Reidenouer, Hal Roberts and Emily Witt, three people shaped by the fundamentalist Christian community who have come to embrace the need for representation and cultural literacy. Why is it so hard for people from the Evangelical movement to embrace what some in the community call “woke” ideologies? Why do some church organizations draw a line when it comes to having uncomfortable conversations on topics like race, gender and American History as learned in schools, even as they ensured that all students are seen and represented? In this round table, we follow the journey of three school and community educators as they talk openly about their journey from evangelical church circles to understanding the importance of representation and cultural literacy. You can follow Jonathan Reidenouer at @JReidenouer After 15 years working in restaurants, Jonathan got his graduate degree in Education in 2011 and has not looked back. Since then, he has worked as a math teacher in an alternative school and as a substitute teacher in both public and private schools. Self-employed for seven years now, he is a professional tutor who specializes in math, test prep, and writing. Last year marked 15 years of marriage to spouse Dayna, who is a copyeditor and fiber arts enthusiast. Since first gaining access to the internet, Jonathan has spent time learning all things about American history that weren't taught in school. You can follow Hal Roberts at @HalLRoberts Hal Roberts is a retired superintendent after serving for 38 years in education, with 30 of those in leadership. Hal taught students in grades 4-12, coached boys and girls 7-12, served as athletic director, elementary principal, high school principal, assistant superintendent, and superintendent. He has spent the last six years researching both leadership and neuroscience and how those relate to each other. You can follow Emily Witt at @witty_witt93 or view her work at https://www.emilylwitt.com/ Emily is an Austin-based playwright and communications professional working for Texas Freedom Network, a multi-issue progressive & advocacy organization. Previously, she worked at CASA of Travis County, helping to expand the diversity of their volunteer base to better serve children and families within the child welfare system. She earned her BFA in Playwriting from Chicago's DePaul University, where the mainstage production of her play about our country's barriers to abortion access, Mrs. Phu's Cleansing Juices (and also salads), received a Distinguished Achievement Award for Playwriting from The Kennedy Center. She spends her free time volunteering at SAFE (an org serving sexual assault and domestic violence survivors), going to as much live music as possible, and hiking with her dog. On this episode, we celebrate Pride month with a discussion about the fight for equality at the ballot, in legislatures and the courts. From Stonewall to Obergefell and beyond, nonprofits have stood center stage as key advocates. During the 87th Legislative session, nonprofit advocates in TEXAS successfully defeated SB 29, which would have banned transgender student athletes from competing on sports teams based on their gender identity. Local nonprofits like the Texas Freedom Network and Equality Texas led the charge in advocating against the bill alongside several other incredible nonprofits. While it's possible the bill may be revived during a later legislative session, there is much to celebrate for now. ARKANSAS recently passed a new law (one of the first of its kind in the nation) that bans gender-affirming healthcare for transgender youth. The ACLU recently filed a lawsuit on behalf of four families and two doctors, who argue that the law is unconstitutional and that it should be struck down so that all children have access to medically necessary care. Any day now, the United States SUPREME COURT is expected to release a decision in the case of Fulton v. City of Philadelphia, which will decide the constitutionality of a Philadelphia ordinance that bars discrimination based on sexual orientation. A legal challenge against the ordinance was brought by a Catholic foster agency that lost its contract with the city as a result of the nondiscrimination policy. The agency says that the policy violates its First Amendment rights to freedom of religion and speech. As mandated by the U.S. Constitution, our nation gets just one chance each decade to count its population by counting every resident in the United States. The data collected by the census determine the number of seats each state has in the U.S. House of Representatives (a process called apportionment) and is also used to distribute billions in federal funds to local communities. Houston in Action has mobilized for a complete count for the 2020 Census in Houston and Harris County. Ray Shackelford, a community organizer for the Houston Urban League as well as Lisa Sargent, the Census and Civic Engagement Coordinator for the Texas Freedom Network is with us to talk about Houston in Action and its efforts to make sure everyone counts.
Recently, a coalition of Texas organizations launched what it says is the largest voter registration program ahead of the 2020 election. The goal is to register over 500,000 Texas voters before the February 3 deadline, making them eligible to vote in the March 3 primary. Organizations involved in this effort include Battleground Texas Engagement Fund, Texas Freedom Network, Jolt Initiative, Texas Rising and MOVE Texas. For this episode of Latino Rebels Radio, host Julio Ricardo Varela welcomes Oscar Silva of Battleground Texas and Ofelia Alonso of Texas Rising. While The Rabble podcast is on break, we are revisiting some of our favorite episodes. We were so inspired by Glenaan O'Neil of the Lone Star Victims Advocacy Project, who is cheerfully persisting first after battling cancer and then after having funding pulled for her fledgling nonprofit. We love her hilarious self and her mission of advocating for immigrant victims of domestic abuse in rural Texas. Plus, Ed Scruggs of Texas Gun Sense is back to explain "red flag laws" and "mandatory buy-backs." The incredible folks at the Texas Freedom Network are looking out for all the peens and vags (and everything in between), and they tell us how to help. This episode first aired September 20, 2019. We snuck a special guest into the studio to help us out with FMK this week... Ed Scruggs of Texas Gun Sense is back to explain "red flag laws" and "mandatory buy-backs." As Beto would say, "Hell yes!" to those. And a big "f*ck no" to teaching nothin' but abstinence in Texas schools. The incredible folks at the Texas Freedom Network are looking out for all the peens and vags (and everything in between), and they tell us how to help. Our new friend Glenaan O'Neil of the Lone Star Victims Advocacy Project teaches how to be cheerfully persistent, and we want to raise money to help her continue serving immigrant victims of abuse in rural Texas. In conversation with Tamala Edwards, anchor, 6ABC Action News morning edition A ''heroine of the resistance'' (Vogue), Cecile Richards was the president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America and the Planned Parenthood Action Fund from 2006 to 2018. The daughter of legendary Ann Richards, she began her career in the labor movement, then helped her mother become Texas's first Democratic woman governor, and later served as Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi's Deputy Chief of Staff. One of Time magazine's 100 Most Influential People in the World, she serves on the board of the Ford Foundation and founded the Texas Freedom Network in order to counter the religious right. Make Trouble tells her indelible story and offers practical advice for a new generation of leaders. Sandra Shaber Memorial Lecture (recorded 3/28/2019)
ABORTION! It's okay to say out loud. Special guest Zoraima Palaez from the Texas Freedom Network shares her story with us. Plus, we go heart-eyes for Nancy Pelosi's visit to Austin and fangirl out over Rep. James Talarico's efforts to support "The Whole Student" so our kids can succeed not just in school but in life. Plus, we learn about ways to keep Texas mamas from dying in childbirth. Also... unicorn onesies! THIS WEEK'S GUEST: Zoraima Palaez, Outreach and Advocacy Manager for the Texas Freedom Network https://twitter.com/TFN SH*T TO DO: Contact the members of the TX House Human Services Committee to support bills fighting maternal mortality. Suggested Call Script/Email: “I'm reaching out to urge the representative to prioritize bills to reduce the high maternal mortality rate in Texas. [Insert any personal information or stories about why you care about this issue] Last year, Texas's overall maternal mortality rate was 32.4 for every 100,000 births. The C.D.C. estimates that 60 percent of current maternal deaths in the United States are preventable. Even one needless death of a mother is unacceptable. As a member of the Human Services Committee, please support HB241, HB610, HB 411, HB 744. Texas Medicaid maternity benefits cover over half of Texas births each year, but coverage ends two months after delivery. These bills would extend the post-partum coverage for a full 12 months, to better address ongoing health conditions and reduce maternal mortality, which have been recommended by Texas' Maternal Mortality and Morbidity Task Force.” Human Services Committee https://house.texas.gov/committees/committee/?committee=C310 Republicans: Rep. Our nation is in the midst of a time of tremendous social and political unrest. All around us urgent voices are asking us to spend our time, energy and money to combat the roll back of progress in the areas of minority rights, religious freedom, environmental protections, and much more. With such organizations as the ACLU, Planned Parenthood, TXUUJM, Texas Freedom Network, and others calling for our support right now, why on earth should we still give to the church? Is there something religious communities provide that these other worthy groups do not, which justifies our generous continuing support of our UU congregations?
M Barclay serves as RMN’s Director of Communications and served for two years as staff liaison to United Methodist Alliance for Transgender Inclusion. The Struggle for Religious Freedom Goes SouthFrom the Deep South to Southern Europe, struggles for religious freedom are sending ripples across our communities. This week on State of Belief, Interfaith Alliance’s weekly radio show and podcast, Rev. Welton Gaddy takes a look at three different conflicts facing religious communities. We’ll hear about Texas Freedom Network’s fight to keep Christian education out of public schools. We’ll check in with our friend Suhag Shukla at the Hindu American Foundation on the latest debate about adding a Hindu monument to the Ten Commandments monument at the Arkansas State House. And Catherine Orsborne, director of the Shoulder to Shoulder campaign, will tell us about how anti-Muslim bigotry stops us from helping those refugees most in need. What Did you Learn In School Today? Across the country the Religious Right and their allies in Congress, state legislatures and local school boards, have waged a quiet campaign to bring religious teachings into public schools and to funnel public money to private schools. As they say, everything’s bigger in Texas, including the Religious Right’s agenda. Dan Quinn, communications director at the Texas Freedom Network, will join Welton this week to fill us in on the most recent struggles around religion in school and what the implications are for the rest of the country. The Very Dire Consequences of Islamophobia We all know that anti-Muslim bigotry takes a serious toll on our country. We see it in our political debates, in protests against mosques and community centers, and in policing and national security. But have you ever thought about how it changes our debate about refugees and immigration? This week Catherine Orsborn of Shoulder to Shoulder will discuss how anti-Muslim bigotry has stopped the U.S. and countries across Europe from adequately addressing the refugee crisis in Syria, Sudan and across the Middle East. The Statues and Statutes of Religion Freedom When we debate religious freedom in America, we usually debate the statues and laws that govern religious practice in our nation. But, increasingly often these days, we’re talking a lot about statues. The Arkansas State Legislature has just mandated a memorial to the Ten Commandments on the capitol grounds. So a group of Hindus petitioned the state to add a Hindu statue to the display, a request that has garnered surprisingly broad interfaith support. Tune in to hear from Suhag Shukla, co-founder and executive director of the Hindu-America Foundation, talk about why the work to make these public displays of religion more inclusive is so important.
Highlights from Dan Barker's historic debate on religion with Cardinal George Pell, archbishop of Sydney, Australia, will be featured. Dan, along with cohost Annie Laurie Gaylor, will talk a bit about freethought "Down Under" and then interview Ryan Valentine, deputy director of the Texas Freedom Network, about the latest fundamentalist incursions on textbooks in the State of Texas.
This week Freethought Radio talks with Jon O'Brien, president of Catholics For Choice (not all Catholics are alike), about his broad investigative indictment of William Donohue's obnoxious Catholic League, and with Ryan Valentine of the Texas Freedom Network about the troublesome plan to teach bible classes in Texas schools.
