Today's guest is Charlie Collins. Charlie is a singer songwriter out of Northern Virginia who also happens to be a firefighter. He's a firefighter in Loudoun County. He picked up the guitar recently as a way to recover and as a piece of therapy, actually. And from there, between TikTok, YouTube, friends and co-workers, his stuff got out on the internet and he was picked up by a producer in Nashville, Actually the son of Roger Miller and some of you might know who Roger Miller is. He's famous for the song King of the Road. His son found Charlie and decided he was worth recording and I have to agree with him. So the result of that recording was the EP called Undisclosed and you're going to hear some of the songs from that in today's episode and you're going to hear a couple of unreleased songs This one was a good one. This was a fun one to do. There was a typical story of life and some traumas and some drama and then recovery. But there's also five songs mixed in and it was a little tricky for me because it's the first time I've recorded music along with a podcast. So hopefully the quality treats you right. And, and you enjoy this show as much as I did.

Batman: The Animated Series See No Evil Lloyd "Eddie" Ventrix is on the verge of losing his daughter, Kimberly (Elisabeth Moss), to his ex-wife, Helen, due to his past as a con artist. Determined not to lose Kimberly, Ventrix dons a suit, stolen from where he used to work while on parole, which grants the user invisibility but also becomes highly toxic and drives him insane. He poses as Kimberly's imaginary friend, Mojo, and planning to abduct her from her mother, while in a crime spree as an invisible robber. Batman must solve the mystery crimes and stop Ventrix, despite the fact that he cannot even see him. Beware the Gray Ghost Simon Trent, an actor best known for his past role as "The Gray Ghost", is on the verge of bankruptcy thanks to his declining career. To save himself, he sells off all of his Gray Ghost merchandise. Immediately afterwards, a series of bombings related to the old show begin to occur. Batman, having himself been inspired partly by the show to become the crimefighter he now is, goes to Trent for help, and they team up to put an end to the crimes, and also revive Trent's career. Prophecy of Doom Batman investigates a cult, called the Brotherhood, founded by the "mystic" Nostromos, after hearing about a number of stories from his colleagues about his ability to predict the future. Batman finds out that Nostromos is actually a con artist who was rigging near-fatal accidents to gain the confidence of Gotham's upper class citizens, and he must expose this ruse before it is too late. Joker's Favor After a man named Charlie Collins curses at the Joker on the road for offensive driving, the Clown Prince of Crime corners him and intimidates him into doing him a "small favor". Two years pass, and the Joker finally decides how to use Charlie: to sneak a bomb into the Peregrinator's Club, where Commissioner Gordon is to give a speech at an award ceremony. Charlie, who merely has to open the door, is sceptical at first, but for the sake of his family, he reluctantly decides to obey. We are joined by Mark Krawczyk, Host of The Spoiler Room podcast. Charlie's self-esteem began to unravel when he was diagnosed with a rare eye disorder in third grade. He would never fly in a jet fighter as he had imagined. He'd never race a car and see the checkered flag wave. He couldn't go to college because he wasn't smart enough. At least, that's what his teachers said. Only an unusually cruel God would destroy a little boy's dreams by making him defective. It was the only plausible explanation, and it was a crushing blow. Why should he care about himself if God doesn't care about him? And so Charlie's descent into a world of negative self-talk and, eventually, addiction began. A self-destructive spiral that would see him avoid death twice as he marched to the brink of suicide.

In this episode, Marcela Salmon speaks with Cassidy about growing up with a father, uncle and aunt with macular degeneration. Cassidy has lived around MacD for her entire life. She became aware of her father's condition during a trip to Colorado when she realized her father couldn't read things easily and she would help. Her father first worked for Vispero, then for LVI, a company based in Sweden that sells products to help legally blind people. When LVI expanded to the United States, her father became the chief marketing sales director for the United States division. Her father never viewed himself as having a handicap. In fact, his disability made him even more successful in life and opened the door to helping others find success as well. One of the inspiring things Cassidy's father did was write a book called Tripping Into The Light about his journey growing up with Stargardt's juvenile macular degeneration and how he has been successful in life. As the story goes, Cassidy's grandmother took her father and his three siblings to a hospital in Massachusetts to get tested for their eyesight. The doctor proclaimed their eyesight would get progressively worse and proceeded to write a list of all the things they could and could not do in life, including skiing and snowboarding. Leaving the office, his grandmother threw the notes in the trash and the rest is history - Cassidy's uncle became a ski instructor in Colorado and her father became an entrepreneurial success. Her grandmother made sure the disease would not hold her children back from pursuing whatever they wanted in life. Cassidy explains that her father uses a CCTV that reads to him or magnifies things for him as he only has peripheral vision. Cassidy tells Marcela that her father has learned how to train his eyes to look straight at you when he's talking rather than peering from the side of his eye. Cassidy explains that this adaptability and entrepreneurial spirit is one of the driving factors to his father's success, and an inspiration to her. Marcela As a caregiver Cassidy says learned when to step in and help and when to back off, and that she thinks patience is the key to aiding people with MacD. She stresses how important this is for independent people like her father, who get easily frustrated when they want to do things on their own, but can't. They also don't like to be approached by strangers and assisted without first knowing what is going on. Cassidy references an example of the time two people lifted up Cassidy's father to help him cross a street. This episode focuses on what it's like to be a caregiver and how you tend to notice everyday things differently, like restaurant lighting, going to the movies; even the monotone colors of carpeted stairs, which can be tricky to navigate for a person with macular degeneration. Luckily Cassidy's father is very open and even lighthearted about having MacD. He has accepted his eye disease and often speaks out, making suggestions that would improve his surroundings. He can laugh about his shortcomings and puts his energy into reading “how to” informational and nutritional books for self-actualization. Cassidy's father now runs a nonprofit called “The Thriving Blind Academy,” where he teaches the principles of success. Bill Kilroy of Vispero shares information on the Freedom Scientific Topaz line of desktop video magnifiers. These devices sit on a desk with a video magnification system that includes a camera monitor and an X Y table. The monitor sizes range from 20, 22 or 24 inches. It's versatile, with the ability to swing left or right, raise or lower depending on your height. It allows for someone with notes to be able to move those notes around and be able to magnify what they need. Because these devices have a bigger monitor, they can magnify more information on a page at a time. There's less mental processing to put the characters into words, the words into sentences, the sentences into paragraphs, and you can use these devices for longer periods of time than a handheld magnifier. It also allows the user who might want to pause on reading a chapter to start scanning pages so that they can sit back and listen to what's being read. The Topaz OCR is a great choice to have and goes above and beyond the OCR capability. To learn more about The Topaz or The Merlin or The Optelec, there are two ways to get in touch. Go online and type in www.vispero.com or call our toll free number at 1-800-444-4443 and speak to one of our customer service representatives. You can tell them what you're interested in, they can guide you through some of the products and can connect you with a local resource that can help you in your home or schedule an appointment to potentially come to their showroom and learn more about these products and test drive one for yourself. The fantastic voice of Kay Starr starts us off with: Rock and Roll Waltz(1954), Changing Partners(1954) and Wabash Cannon Ball(1948). The Three Kays with The Cuckoo. A popular English group in the 1950s. Cuckoo is probably a description of a lot of the rest of the content of the show. Albert Burdon with Albert before the means test(1931). I do quite like it. There are genuine gags and its quite subversive. The Street Singer with Trouble in paradise. Arthur Tracey was born Abba Avrom Tracovutsky in Ukraine in 1899. He originally used the name The Street Singer to avoid being banned from Vaudeville for appearing on the radio under his own name. Suzette Tarri performs The Boarding House. She was, what we'd call now, an observational comedian. Had a long career from the 1920s to 50s. Surely record of the week: Jack Hodges, the Raspberry King with Everything is fresh today. Eat more fruit he says, blowing raspberries! Thirteen Woman from Billy Haley. A sexiest dream. Who knew the dropping of an H bomb could be so positive. Bizarre. Victor Theremin was born Lev Therman in St Peterburgh in 1996 and was the inventor of the first commercially produced electronic instrument- The Theremin. He was also involved in espionage. Working with the notorious Soviet NKVD developing listening devices. The Theremin has been used in such films as Spellbound, The Day the Earth stood still and Hellboy. Next a 1916 version of Another little drink. Miss Louie Brooks, Jack Henty( the prolific Ernest Pike) and Charlie Collins. Charlie Collins was a songwriter of this era and earlier. Indeed it wrote some of the best known songs from the golden age of the British music halls- Dont dilly dally on the way, Boiled beef and carrots and Any old Iron? I can find no record of him performing though. Surely this is the same man? We finish with the Canadian born W V Robinson and Freaks of the mouth organ from 1926. Utter nonsense!!

Charlene Bailey has lived a life of reintroductions. A promising country upstart in the heart of Tamworth, the singer-songwriter got her start as a child prodigy in a family band. She later emerged as a prospective indie-pop darling in the big smoke of Sydney and Los Angeles, helming Tigertown for some prosperous but simultaneously tumultuous years. These days, folks know her as Charlie Collins - a big-voiced, big-hearted and utterly charming artist that sonically composes her past and present to create something well worth investing in for the future. With two new songs out in the world - one of which features her childhood hero Kasey Chambers - it felt opportune to saddle up next to Ms. Collins and her two playful cats in her Sydney abode, discussing both the story so far and what we can expect going ahead. Charlie's new singles "Fuck It" and "Honey Can We Run Away" are out now via Island Records. Produced and edited by Paul McWhirter. Additional editing by David James Young. This week I was joined by best selling author and international motivational speaker Mr. Charlie Collins. I am so excited for you guys to get to know Charlie and his incredible story. Charlie lost his vision at a young age and was robbed of what he thought was going to be a future flying fighter jets or fighting fires. Charlie is into extreme sports and even though he struggled at first coming to terms with losing his sight he did not let it stop him. Charlie has gone on to do incredible things which you will learn more about in this episode. He has even met and become friends with a massively successful transformational coach and best selling author and speaker many times over Mr. Jack Canfield. Needless to say, Charlie has not let anything get in his way and I am just so energized by what Charlie does. I am stoked for you guys to learn more through this episode and I hope you get a sense of the type of man Charlie is. Dr Zane Banks and Jy-Perry Banks are two of the most electrifying young guitarists in Australia. The siblings tell of a musically rich upbringing and subsequent careers in the industry. The brothers are equally adept in country, jazz, blues, rock and art music. Zane attained his PhD through the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, researching the use of electric guitar in contemporary art music. He premiered Ingwe, the solo electric guitar work composed by Georges Lentz and won the ABC Limelight Newcomer of the Year in 2011. Jy completed a Masters in Tuba performance - also at the Sydney Con - before throwing himself into pedal steel. He is now highly in demand working with Charlie Collins, Kasey Chambers, Julian Day and many others. Jy is also a Fender artist.
