This week's Local Legends episode is a very special conversation in which Martin gathers round the Three Ravens campfire with Tim Laycock, an inspirational, multi-talented person and a true champion for the county of Dorset.Author of books including Dorset Folk Tales, writing is just the tip of the iceberg with Tim, who came to the attentions of many in the British folk community through his work as part of Magic Lantern with the one and only Taffy Thomas. Music is absolutely key to Tim's life. He is a tremendous singer and multi-instrumentalist, and, like a crafty folk song magpie, he has been finding stories and songs, and story-songs, and bringing them out and into the light across his many years of performance. With a rich catalogue of wonderful recordings available as CDs and through streaming services, his talents stretch yet further, including into theatre, where he has worked with the likes of the National Theatre, Shakespeare's Globe, Festival Theatre Chichester, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, and many others. He has written ten plays, too, some award-winning, and has had a long and successful career as a performer and director. Being a Dorset man, it's perhaps necessary that Thomas Hardy would feature in that mix, and Tim is also the Artistic Director of the New Thomas Hardy Players, while also performing Hardy's poetry and works as part of his work as a storyteller and entertainer. On top of which, he is an extremely friendly and knowledgeable chap, so, please settle in and get comfortable for one of the richest, most interesting conversations we've had for Local Legends so far. One that folds in everything from nativity plays with John Eliot Gardiner to the Dorset Oozer, the poetry of William Barnes to false teeth being lost off fishing boats. It's a great one, as is Tim himself. And to learn more about Tim and his work, do visit his website at https://timlaycock.co.uk/ Otherwise, we'll be back on Monday with our brand new episode all about the history and folklore of Northamptonshire! The Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. Then, and most importantly, the pair take turns to tell a new version of an ancient story from that county - all before discussing what that tale might mean, where it might have come from, and the truths it reveals about England's hidden past...Bonus Episodes are released on Thursdays (Magic and Medicines about folk remedies and arcane spells, Three Ravens Bestiary about cryptids and mythical creatures, Dying Arts about endangered heritage crafts, and Something Wicked about folkloric true crime from across history) plus Local Legends episodes on Saturdays - interviews with acclaimed authors, folklorists, podcasters and historians with unique perspectives on that week's county. With a range of exclusive content on Patreon, too, including audio ghost tours, the Three Ravens Newsletter, and monthly Three Ravens Film Club episodes about folk horror films from across the decades, why not join us around the campfire and listen in?Learn more at www.threeravenspodcast.com, join our Patreon at www.patreon.com/threeravenspodcast, and find links to our social media channels here: https://linktr.ee/threeravenspodcast Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. In our first two episodes of the gut instinct series, we've explored the growing evidence that suggests how so much of what happens in the gut impacts diseases traditionally linked to the brain. We've also examined the booming multi-billion dollar probiotics and kombucha industries, and found they have little or limited effect on the gut. So what other ways can we treat the mind via our guts? Around a third of GPs now identify as integrative doctors who blend conventional medicine with lifestyle interventions. William has done many types of jobs in his life, but gold-mining has always been the one he enjoyed the most. He has always loved camping out in the wilderness near a creek or a river, where he could live high in peaceful solitude, surrounded by beauty. One night in the summer of 1997, William was camped in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, when he watched a large creature wandering down the side of a canyon, then walked up to my tent at such close range, he could have touched it, and then walked on . For the next twelve years William became obsessed with researching, and thinking of a way to film this magnificent creature in it's own environment. As he began to read about other encounters, William was surprised to hear that he was not alone in this endeavour, and he has learned from the problems encountered by other researchers. He finally came up with the idea of using a 35 foot, custom-made remote-controlled, dual airship with an extremely quiet engine and the latest technology in thermal imaging. William has a partner, Jason Valenti, who is also a bigfoot researcher. - www.bigfoot24-7.comFor Your Listening Pleasure for these Lockdown / Stay-At-Home COVID and Variants Times - For all the radio shows available on The 'X' Zone Broadcast Network visit - https://www.spreaker.com/user/xzoneradiotv.Our radio shows archives and programming include: A Different Perspective with Kevin Randle; Alien Cosmic Expo Lecture Series; Alien Worlds Radio Show; America's Soul Doctor with Ken Unger; Back in Control Radio Show with Dr. David Hanscom, MD; Connecting with Coincidence with Dr. Bernard Beitman, MD; Dick Tracy; Dimension X; Exploring Tomorrow Radio Show; Flash Gordon; Imagine More Success Radio Show with Syndee Hendricks and Thomas Hydes; Jet Jungle Radio Show; Journey Into Space; Know the Name with Sharon Lynn Wyeth; Lux Radio Theatre - Classic Old Time Radio; Mission Evolution with Gwilda Wiyaka; Paranormal StakeOut with Larry Lawson; Ray Bradbury - Tales Of The Bizarre; Sci Fi Radio Show; Seek Reality with Roberta Grimes; Space Patrol; Stairway to Heaven with Gwilda Wiyaka; The 'X' Zone Radio Show with Rob McConnell; Two Good To Be True with Justina Marsh and Peter Marsh; and many other! That's The ‘X' Zone Broadcast Network Shows and Archives - https://www.spreaker.com/user/xzoneradiotv

It's Tuesday and you know what that means!! On todays show I welcome William Barnes, a researcher who shares with us his experience with sasquatch while gold drudging that became the catalyst for his sasquatch obsession. He then shares with us his very unique idea for searching for evidence that has a lot of promise and is a step away from the typical search pattern of most researchers. Imagine drones being deployed the second a tree knock or whoop is heard and can zero in on the exact location of the noise! That's a simple explanation of the idea William wants to implement in his hunt for proof!! He also hopes to have his method featured on a future TV program and has even provided a pilot which can be found here: https://www.facebook.com/100000717932028/videos/458305359336992/ If you have had an encounter, email me at nicolavalleybigfoot@gmail.com I would love to hear from you!! The Friday Newsletter | Daily Gardener Community Historical Events 1756 Birth of the handsome and tall Swedish botanist, Pehr Loefling. Pehr met Carl Linnaeus at the University of Uppsala, where Carl was his professor. Early on, Carl dubbed Pehr his "most beloved pupil," and he started calling Pehr "the Vulture." Carl came up with the moniker after observing that Pehr had an intuitive way of finding plants and observing the most minute details of plant specimens. After graduating, Carl recommended Pehr for an opportunity in Madrid. Pehr landed the position, learned Spanish, and was soon called Pedro by his friends. In short order, Pehr joined a Royal Spanish Expedition to South America. His mission was to find and learn about an improved cinnamon species. Two years into the trip, Pehr was botanizing in Venezuela when he died of malaria on the banks of the Caroní River. He was buried beneath an orange tree. He was 27 years old. By the end of the year, over half of the expedition's men would be dead from disease compounded by hunger and fatigue. When Linnaeus heard the news about Pehr, he wrote to a friend, The great Vulture is dead. 1801 Birth of William Barnes (books about this person), English polymath, writer, and inventor. He wrote over 800 poems and had familiarity with over 70 different languages. The English writers Thomas Hardy and Edmund Gosse visited William on his deathbed. Edmund later wrote that William was dying as picturesquely as he lived... We found him in bed in his study, his face turned to the window, where the light came streaming in through flowering plants, his brown books on all sides of him save one, the wall behind him being hung with old green tapestry. Any gardener who loves their garden has likely thought about the day they'll have to say goodbye. William wrote about that moment in a little poem called To a Garden—On Leaving It. Sweet garden! peaceful spot! no more in thee Shall I ever while away the sunny hour. Farewell each blooming shrub, and lofty tree; Farewell, the mossy path and nodding flower: I shall not hear again from yonder bower The song of birds, or humming of the bee, Nor listen to the waterfall, nor see The clouds float on behind the lofty tower. My eyes no more may see, this peaceful scene. But still, sweet spot, wherever I may be, My love-led soul will wander back to thee. 1870 Birth of Adolph G. Rosengarten, Sr., American businessman. His family pharmaceutical company would become part of Merck in the 1920s. In 1913, Adolph and his wife Christine wanted to escape the heat of Philadelphia and find a place suitable for a country home. They settled on a piece of land in Wayne, Pennsylvania, and commissioned their former friend and classmate Charles Borie to design the house and Landscape architect Thomas Sears to work on the terraces. After 1924, the family lived there year-round. Adolph named the estate Chanticleer as a tongue-in-cheek nod to "Chanticlere" in William Makepeace Thackeray's The Newcomes (1855), wherein the estate was "mortgaged up to the very castle windows." Adolph always said he sympathized with the fictional Chanticlere owner from the novel. The etymology of Chanticleer means rooster, and that's why there are so many rooster motifs at Chanticleer (books about this garden). Today the public garden at Chanticleer is among the best in the United States. The grounds occupy 35 of the 50 acres owned by the foundation. The garden opened to the public in 1993. The job of maintaining and designing Chanticleer now falls to seven full-time horticulturists who strive to preserve and improve a garden that's been called America's most romantic and creative garden. 1939 Birth of Phyllis Theroux (books by this author), American writer and journalist. She grew up in San Francisco following World War II. She once wrote, I think this is what hooks one to gardening: it is the closest one can come to being present at creation. Grow That Garden Library™ Book Recommendation The Flower Hunter by Lucy Hunter This book came out late in 2021, and the subtitle is Seasonal flowers inspired by nature and gathered from the garden. Lucy Hunter is a floral whisperer. She knows how to create beauty - true, artistic, Raphaelian, dreamy, sumptuous beauty. For a first book, Lucy has given gardeners quite a gift. Gardeners love nothing better than chatting with other gardeners and seeing their gardens. How do you do this? Why do you grow that? What do you do with this flower? In The Flower Hunter, Lucy Hunter welcomes us to a year in her North Wales garden. And trust me; you want to see what Lucy is doing with the beauty she finds in her own backyard. Lucy is generous with her step-by-step tutorials. She inspires with her essays on working with natural elements. She's funny, too. And Her photography is top of the top. Even if you feel no match for Lucy's level of mastery, she manages to help connect the reader to the well of creativity, the tiny spark of inspiration that each of us possesses. As gardeners, we see the beauty in the every day. We know how to find peace in nature. Lucy extends that serenity and joy and puts it to work in creating more than just exquisite floral arrangements. She also demonstrates other projects like drying flowers for a fall wreath, making natural dyes (easier than you think), and creating your own journal (more fun than you think!). Lucy Hunter has two decades of floral, photography, and landscape design experience. She is a naturalist at heart. She is an edge-softener, an evocateur, a seasonal transition lover, a rose lover and guru, a believer in potential, and a pathfinder to your own creative voice. You'd better believe that her Instagram is amazing. You can follow her @lucytheflowerhunter. This book is 208 pages of Lucy Hunter doing what Lucy Hunter does best: florals, beauty, softness, nature, and sparks. You can get a copy of The Flower Hunter by Lucy Hunter and support the show using the Amazon link in today's show notes for $25. Botanic Spark 1892 Birth of Edna St. Vincent Millay (books by this author), American lyrical poet and playwright. Gardeners know many of Edna's verses like: April comes like an idiot, babbling and strewing flowers. I would blossom if I were a rose. I will be the gladdest thing under the sun! I will touch a hundred flowers and not pick one. But there's a touching little poem of Edna's that was published posthumously. that I thought I'd end the show with today. It's a lovely spring poem called, If It Should Rain. The American actress Kathleen Chalfant once said that her friend Sloane Shelton would repeat the last three lines before going to sleep at the end of particularly hard days. If it should rain --(the sneezy moon Said: Rain)--then I shall hear it soon From shingles into gutters fall... And know of what concerns me, all: The garden will be wet till noon-- I may not walk-- my temper leans To myths and legends--through the beans Till they are dried-- lest I should spread Diseases they have never had. I hear the rain: it comes down straight. Now I can sleep, I need not wait To close the windows anywhere. Tomorrow, it may be, I might Do things to set the whole world right. There's nothing I can do tonight. Thanks for listening to The Daily Gardener And remember: For a happy, healthy life, garden every day.

EPISODE 3, Section 28. I was fairly unknowing to the history of section 28. I've learned a lot through research for this episode. I hope you can take something away from this. I have Grace Anderson and William Barnes on with me to discuss the different views on this law which was brought into place in the late 80's; " It prohibited local councils from distributing any material, whether plays, leaflets, books, etc, that portrayed gay relationships as anything other than abnormal."
William has done many types of jobs in his life, but gold-mining has always been the one he enjoyed the most. The multi award winning Dorset duo Ninebarrow take Matthew Bannister for a walk in the glorious countryside of the Isle of Purbeck. Jon Whitley and Jay LaBouchardiere have known each other since they were twelve years old. They are a musical and personal partnership – a singing duo and a married couple. They love walking and they are not averse to a spot of open air singing too. In fact, they run Ninebarrow walking holidays – inviting fans to join them in tramping the Dorset hills and vales and sharing their music each evening. They’ve even published a book of their favourite Dorset walks. So who better to relate the history of Corfe Castle – ruined since it was blown up by Oliver Cromwell’s men during the English Civil War - or to share some Dorset dialect in the poetry of William Barnes which they’ve set to music? Their exquisite harmonies ring out across the Bronze Age burial mounds at Nine Barrow Down (which gave the band its name) as they savour the spectacular view of Poole Harbour, Swanage and the Isle of Wight. They end up in St James’s Church in the village of Kingston which is known as the “cathedral of Purbeck” for its large size and lavish decoration and Jon and Jay sing “Row On” in the wonderful acoustic of this special building. Another atmospheric walk with two engaging and creative musicians.

On this episode of The Open Mind, we're delighted to welcome Dan Abrams, the chief legal affairs anchor for ABC News and CEO and founder of Abrams Media. He also hosts Live PD on A & E Network and the Dan Abrams Show Where Politics Meets the Law on Sirius XM. He is author of the new book “Theodore Roosevelt For The Defense: The Courtroom Battle to Save His Legacy.” As NPR recounts, “It's an absorbing excursion into an epic 1915 libel case against then former President Teddy Roosevelt. In a truth telling sermon, advocating for a would be corruption busting gubernatorial candidate. Roosevelt accused Republican political boss, William Barnes of promoting evil men whose activities so deeply taint and discredit our whole system of government and the maladministration of public offices.”
The Jerks are on site at Trinity Competitions "Duality" They talked about the workouts, interviewed Jorge Olivares, Lucia Martinez, and William Barnes and special interview with a few of the Kid athletes. You don't want to miss this episode!
In their New York Times bestseller, Lincoln’s Last Trial, ABC News chief legal affairs anchor Dan Abrams and bestselling author David Fisher unearthed a little-known chapter from the life and career of America’s most revered president, shedding new light on his national ascendency. Now, in THEODORE ROOSEVELT FOR THE DEFENSE: The Courtroom Battle to Save his Legacy (Hanover Square Press; May 21, 2019; $26.99 US/$33.50 CAN), this team returns to resurrect another seminal case in presidential history: a 1915 libel case brought against Teddy Roosevelt that rocked the nation and American politics. “There have been at least twenty other twentieth century trials dubbed ‘the trial of the century,’ all captivating based on the nature of the crimes or the identity of the defendants or victims,” write Abrams and Fisher. “But only one of them involved a former president of the United States testifying in his own defense for over a week, and with testimony that would expose the underbelly of seedy political backdoor deal making and even profiteering. Barnes v. Roosevelt also didn’t involve just any former president taking the witness stand. Teddy Roosevelt was one of the most charismatic and entertaining presidents that the nation had, and has, ever seen. He didn’t disappoint, offering animated and at times blistering testimony for an audience that extended well beyond the courtroom.” The libel case was brought against Roosevelt by William Barnes, the former head of the Republican Party in New York State. While endorsing a nonpartisan gubernatorial candidate, T.R.—himself a Republican before helping launch the Progressive or Bull Moose party—had railed against two-party boss rule as a rotten system that created “an invisible government … responsible for the maladministration and corruption in the public office.” Barnes, the owner and publisher of the Albany Evening Journal, was a powerful party boss with dreams of running for governor himself. In an attempt to save his reputation from these ‘false and malicious attacks ‘Barnes sued Roosevelt for libel, demanding the princely sum of $50,000. The civil trial, held in Syracuse, became a media circus. Drawing on a trove of primary source material, including the complete typed transcripts from every moment of the case, as well as rich and colorful contemporary reportage from the many newspaper journalists covering the proceedings, Abrams and Fisher create a novelistic narrative that captures the high-stakes tension, occasional humor, and precedent-setting testimony. The trial, which played out as America was on the brink of world war, would take its toll on both Roosevelt and Barnes. Yet, it exposed political misdeeds and set legal precedents, while shoring up T.R.’s reputation as an enemy of corruptions and one of the most progressive leaders our country has ever seen. “Dan Abrams and David Fisher have penned a thrilling account of a nationally important trial that had profound consequences for both parties, one of whom happened to be Teddy Roosevelt,” says Gregg Tripoli, Executive Director, Onondaga Historical Association. “Abrams and Fisher have sifted through the archives to give us a courtroom seat to witness T.R. at his ‘bully’ best in this high stakes, high drama, high profile, yet so far relatively unknown, trial from our nation’s history.” About the author: DAN ABRAMS is the chief legal affairs correspondent for ABC News as well as the host of top-rated Live PD on A&E Network and The Dan Abrams Show: Where Politics Meets the Law on SiriusXM. A graduate of Columbia University Law School, he is CEO and founder of Abrams Media, which includes the Law & Crime network. He lives in New York. If you thought Uber’s network of cars is strong, you’ll be very interested to learn about a new network that two former executives are spinning off – and how they’re impacting the venture capital world.Josh Mohrer is one of those former Uber execs – he was the General Manager of Uber in NY, NJ, CT and PA and helped grow revenues there from zero to $3 billion. Now, with William Barnes, who led Uber’s West Coast ops, Josh is leveraging the entrepreneurial spirit that drove Uber and driving it in a new direction. He put together a syndicate of investors – nearly all former Uber employees – to invest in startups either by other former Uber employees or in adjacent businesses and sectors. The combination – funding plus operational expertise – is called Moving Capital and has created a model that others in the VC world are watching. How does it work? What are the growth expectations? Here’s my conversation with Josh Morher.
Welcome, my friends, to episode 20 of the Make America Grape Again Podcast, which will center around Kansas. Our wine today is the 2015 Panape Rosé, from BlueJacket Crossing Winery, located in Eudora, Kansas. This is a wine made from 100% estate grown St. Vincent grapes from their vineyard on site. St. Vincent was discovered in 1973 in a vineyard in Missouri, growing about 100 feet from where there once had been a row of Pinot Noir. At the time, Chambourcin vines had been growing next to the Pinot Noir. The official parentage of St. Vincent has yet to be established, but it is suspected that this grape is a cross between these two varietals. It was initially named "Stomboli," due to this varietal's bright red leaves in the fall and that it was explosively vigorous, but the name was changed to honor the patron saint of the Cote d'Or in Burgundy, St. Vincent of Saragossa. The fascinating viticultural history and mysterious origins of St. Vincent aside, Kansas provides our main introduction to the major blight across the history of American wine: Prohibition. Lasting from 1920 to 1933 in America as a whole, Kansas was among the first states to experiment with this trend, due to its location at the center of the growing movement. This movement nearly killed the industry in the United States as a whole, and many states have not fully recovered as of yet--or are only recently coming out of its shadow. Today, Kansas has 23 vineyards, totaling about 250 Acres, which is a far cry from the thousands of acres reportedly under vine in 1901, when a work called "The Grape in Kansas" was written by William Barnes. This bottle was acquired from the winery directly by my friend Tiffany Poth, the Wine Hippie, who also appears in this episode. Enjoy!

English Professor Tom Burton from the Adelaide University entertains with stories from English poet William Barnes as we talk about the Dorset poems Barnes wrote that will be presented at the 2012 Adelaide Fringe Festival.
The Falcon Project is a blimp, 35 feet long and holds 1800 cubic feet of helium. It is run on electric batteries and is remote-controlled from the ground. The batteries will enable it to be airborne for five hours at a time, and can cover about a five mile area. The thermal-imaging cameras are the newest in technology, and are the same as the ones being used by the military. The infra-red camera can portray an image in the dark, as clearly as though it were in daylight. The territory to explore, are spots that have traditionally been known for their multiple sightings such as California,Oregon, Washington,Texas,Arkansas, and Florida. Having seen the creature with his own two eyes, Barnes is convinced there is something to the stories, and is determined to set out in July to capture photographic proof of the creature. To help rally support around the investigation, Barnes set up a website (www.bigfoot24-7.com) and described his search as “the most penetrating search for Sasquatch/Bigfoot ever conducted in North America.”The man behind this blimp effort is William Barnes. From his website, Barnes wrote, “As a weekend goldminer in Northern California,I had such a creature walk up to my tent,so close I could have touched it,and then walk past me and up the side of the hill.Since that night by the creek,I have pondered for years, about how one could be filmed for any length of time, and how it could be studied in it's own safe habitat. Barnes will begin his study in the Kalamuth valley in California. Join us on Nite Callers Radio for a most interesting guest as we welcome William Barnes as he tells us about the "Falcon Project."
