Before the new school year officially begins, I'm starting a new series where I'm talking with counselors from different grade levels to gather insight into their roles and the specific struggles or challenges they face with the grade level they serve. Today, I'm kicking off the series with middle school counselor Lauren Tenholder. Lauren shares what high school counselors need to know about incoming ninth-grade students and their transition to high school. When incoming ninth graders enter high school, high school counselors often feel like they have to start from scratch by gathering information on their students. However, Lauren emphasizes using their feeder middle school counselors as a resource. She believes communication and collaboration amongst middle school and high school counselors will make a student's transition to high school smoother and make the ability to take action on serving their social and academic needs easier. Throughout our conversation, Lauren provides a lot of insight into the common struggles eighth graders have about entering high school, the pressure parents can put on their kids when it comes to academics, and the growing number of expectations these students are facing. I loved the perspective Lauren conveyed about a student's transition to high school and what kind of information they're equipped with and still need to know. So, if you're a high school counselor who works directly with ninth-grade students, this episode is for you!Resources Mentioned:Resource: Transition to High School Ninth Grade PresentationResource: Freshman Year Planning GuideResource: Freshman Year Planning BundleLeave your review for School Counseling Conversations on Apple PodcastsConnect with Lauren Tenholder:Facebook: https://facebook.com/profile.php?id=100090560221288&mibextid=ZbWKwL Instagram: https://instagram.com/onecraftycounselor Etsy: https://etsy.com/shop/onecraftycounselor Connect with Lauren:Sign up for the free, 3-day prep for High School Counseling Job Interviews: https://counselorclique.com/interviewsVisit my TpT store: https://counselorclique.com/shopSend me a DM on Instagram @counselorclique: https://instagram.com/counselorcliqueFollow me on Facebook:

TODAY: David Fiorazo highlights the worldview war and spiritual forces of darkness relating to recent news and headlines from a biblical perspective including the shifting cultural (and media) narrative that Christians are fair game when it comes to discrimination, censorship, and violent attacks. “And this is the judgment, that the Light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the Light; for their deeds were evil. For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light, so that his deeds will not be exposed. But the one who practices the truth comes to the Light…” John 3:19-21 MORE Your Favorite Guests on Stand Up for the Truth! You're listening to the Westerly Sun's podcast, where we talk about news, the best local events, new job postings, obituaries, and more. First, a bit of Rhode Island trivia. Today's trivia is brought to you by Perennial. Perennial's new plant-based drink “Daily Gut & Brain” is a blend of easily digestible nutrients crafted for gut and brain health. A convenient mini-meal, Daily Gut & Brain” is available now at the CVS Pharmacy in Wakefield. Now for some trivia. Did you know that Rhode Island native, Paul Konerko is a former MLB first baseman who played for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Cincinnati Reds and, for most of his career, the Chicago White Sox. Konerko helped the White Sox win the 2005 World Series over the Houston Astros, the franchise's first since 1917. From 2006 to 2014 he served as the White Sox captain. Now, we turn our feature story…. Proposals to move eighth grade students from Westerly Middle School to Westerly High School's Babcock Hall are getting a range of responses, including concern, opposition, support and even a call to lobby the Town Council to reconsider the $50 million borrowing cap it has imposed on a final school redesign plan. Moving the eighth grade to Babcock Hall is part of the two school redesign plans the School Building Subcommittee has identified as being worthy of further exploration. Superintendent of Schools Mark Garceau recently asked the School Committee for input on the concept of moving the eighth grade to Babcock Hall. Garceau has at times discussed the idea separately from school redesign proposals, saying it might get students interested in Westerly High School by exposing them to educational and extracurricular offerings and could slow the tide of students leaving the district to attend other high schools. On Wednesday, several parents opposed to the idea spoke during a School Committee meeting. A few common criticisms emerged, including concerns that the eighth grade students would feel isolated in a "school within a school," whether such a change should be made as students continue to adjust to life in the time of COVID-19, and concerns that eighth grade students would have too much interaction with older high school students. Parents also said they were concerned about transportation, participation in sports and other extracurricular activities, and whether eighth grade students would have appropriate access to student support systems such as guidance counselors, mental health professionals and deans. Jim Nyberg, one of the parents who spoke during the meeting said: "There are a lot of known unknowns. If we are sure we want to do this, it would seem that we need more time." On Wednesday, the School Committee approved the subcommittee's request to hire JCJ Architecture, which has offices in Hartford and Boston, to serve as architect/engineer for the redesign process. Stay up to date on this story and more at westerlysun.com There are a lot of businesses in our community that are hiring right now, so we're excited to tell you about some new job listings. Today's Job posting comes from Cargill in Westerly. They're looking for shipping and receiving associates. You'll be responsible for working in a fast paced environment packing meat products. Pay is up $20.00 per hour. If you're interested and think you'd be a good fit for the role you can apply using the link in our episode description. https://www.indeed.com/jobs?l=Westerly%2C%20RI&mna=5&aceid&gclid=Cj0KCQjwpf2IBhDkARIsAGVo0D2S3gEb-328GyRpBuTTeeKPdn3-klOh0KYAsfete6MEZmI5S4qTg-4aAnQkEALw_wcB&vjk=740518464e480bd4 Today we're remembering the life of Luigina Algieri of Midland Road. She was the beloved wife of Vincenzo Algieri who predeceased her in 2015. Born in Corigliano, Calabria, Italy, Luigina proudly worked at the Westerly Hospital for 25 years until she retired in 2004. She was a communicant of the St. Pius X Church and took pride in making a warm and welcoming home. She was a talented cook and dessert maker and she enjoyed continuing her Italian traditions with her family. She loved spending her summers outdoors and enjoying her flower and vegetable gardens. She was pure definition of love and anyone who had the pleasure of meeting her felt that love and compassion. She was absolutely selfless and did anything for her family and friends. She will be lovingly remembered by her four children, two siblings, her nine grandchildren, two sisters-in-law, and many nieces and nephews. Her family would like to thank the Westerly Hospital for their compassion, care and support during her brief illness. Thank you for taking a moment with us today to remember and celebrate Luigina's life. That's it for today, we'll be back next time with more! Also, remember to check out our sponsor Perennial, Daily Gut & Brain, available at the CVS on Main St. in Wakefield! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
It's back to school for millions of students this week after a school year of unprecedented disruption and with the traditional grading systems and report card one of the main casualties. But some educators say this past year's abandonment of letter grades and grade point averages has been a good thing and is key to reforming the education system. They say that for decades research has shown that traditional grading systems decrease student learning by shifting their attention from deep learning to how to play and win at the game of school. Giving out grades reduces student interest in knowledge for its own sake as well as the desire to take on challenges. Rather than providing a fair and helpful snapshot of a student's progress, grades only succeed in capturing the inequity and bias that afflicts our education systems. Supporters of traditional grading approaches respond that grades, especially when paired with individualized comments, provide a valuable feedback tool that is fundamental to a successful education system. Grades that are based on clearly defined learning goals address the problem of teacher bias and provide an honest answer to the key question on every student's mind: how am I doing? Grades also communicate this important information to parents and to higher learning establishments with limited enrolment. Most importantly grades reward effort, a key pillar for a fair and just education system and the broader society it feeds. In today's episode I speak with Psychologist Dr. Bomba who specializes in children anxiety and Former Teacher/Parent Tracy Samek on how to navigate the new school year during a pandemic. To try and help us figure out what is best for our children as some are going back to in-school learning while others are doing virtual learning, we tackle some of the biggest challenges we face. We discuss children and parent's anxieties plus some really good tips on setting our children up for a successful school year. Show notes: The best way to help your children through this pandemic is to be open and honest with them. Give them a safe place to express their feelings. If they worry about getting the virus talk them through the steps you would take to help them feel better. Paint a picture of how you will nurse them back to health. Anxiety is a human condition. Everyone has it. When talking with your children about anxiety come from a place of empathy and acknowledge the confusion and frustration that kids might be experiencing. If your family is handling the circumstances different than other families, acknowledge their confusion and let them know that you are doing what you think is best for your family. Remote Learning: Find a System that works for your children. Create a physical space for them. Have them pick out school supplies to get buy in from them. We discuss tools to help them get set up for success for the new school year. Problem solve with your child and use logic to try to shrink their worries. How to deal with your High School and 8th Grade Students who are not having a "normal" senior year. You need to make a shift in thinking from this is a temporary situation to this is our new normal. There are 3 types of learners: Auditory, Visual and Kinesthetic. We discuss which one learns best with virtual learning and tools on how to help each different type of learner. Good websites to help compensate virtual learning: outschool.com and use a response journal. How we can help our children learn how to figure out information and transfer is to everyday life. They will learn how to schedule and plan. How we can deal with screen time. What children can do to not have them be sitting all day. We discuss many silver linings in the situation we're in today.
