Are you looking for a new hobby? Do you want to expand your knowledge of or experience with movies? Looking to branch out from the MCU? You have come to the right place! This is the second episode of a series where I will be making a guide for How to Watch Movies. This will have complete beginners in mind, as I am assuming no prior movie-watching experience. I want to preach mindfulness and introspection as you watch along. After I finish the guide, I will watch along, following the same lessons and discussing what I picked up and how it contributes to my movie knowledge. With the first episode, I listed the following films as essential movies: Jaws, Pulp Fiction, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Parasite, Citizen Kane. In this second episode, I let you choose your own adventure and list a bunch of movies you can watch depending on your interests. I suggested picking two of the following:Jurassic Park, Inglorious Basterds, The Shining, A Clockwork Orange, Memories of Murder, The Seventh Seal, The Third Man.Then, I again let you decide, picking three films you have heard of or directors whose names are familiar. A few are listed below:Goodfellas, Vertigo, Rear Window, The Godfather, Taxi Driver, Seven Samurai, Rashomon, Memento, FargoFinally, I discuss the question: How do you want to watch movies? While it sounds simple, there are a lot of factors to consider. Streaming vs Torrenting vs Physical. Quality vs Convenience. Subtitles vs No Subtitles. Night vs Day. Focused or Laid Back. Just find out what you prefer!Tune in next week for more genre specific films!Follow us on Twitter and Instagram @cinefitspodEmail us at FriendsWithCinefits@gmail.comWe are now on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCvkCd1iqgZyMfBrEvMn85XQ/featuredFollow our Alex on Letterboxd at https://letterboxd.com/alexmcalister/Check us and our other shows out online at https://www.notabombpodcast.com/Thank you to Ray McAlister for our theme music!
The history of music sharing has more twists and turns than a Richard Linklater film, following our protagonist (music) from sunrise (CDs) to sunset (Spotify). Torrenting might have heralded the end of physical media, but is the music industry's shift from illegal file swapping to legal streaming really the answer musicians have been waiting for? In this episode, comedian Olga Koch and journalist Hussein Kesvani speak with musician and producer J Appiah about what impact technology has had on music, and Olga and Hussein reminisce about the glory days of buying a bootleg DVD in a Moscow metro station. Human Error is a Daddy's SuperYacht production for BBC Sounds.

In this episode of Cyber Security Inside, Tom and Camille dive into how content producers and distributors are keeping content secure in a world of piracy and streaming. What makes it possible for us to safely stream content directly into our homes? How do we know what we’re streaming isn’t pirated in some way? Avi Wachtfogel, Engineering Fellow and Senior Director of Security Strategy at Synamedia, is just the person to cover the evolution of media content security and share the latest threats and best strategies for keeping content secure. The conversation covers: • Macrovision • VHS + DVD • Torrenting and peer-to-peer sharing • BitTorrent • VOD • Over-the-top (OTT) • Hulu, YouTube, HBO Max, Netflix, etc. • Credential fraud • Deep fakes • Content protection and service protection • Watermarking • Take down notices ... and more Don’t miss it! Here are some key take-aways: • With video being distributed more broadly and going straight to streaming, protecting and securing media content has become even more challenging. • Hardware and software technologies have been used on the service protection side to solve the problem of bootleg cable and other content security concerns of the 90s and 2000s. • Over the top (OTT) refers to the distribution of video content over a high-speed Internet connection. This covers streaming services like Netflix, HBO Max, etc. • It’s relatively simple to start an OTT service, so it’s more important than ever to keep media content protected against piracy. If pirates get access to the content, they can re-stream/distribute it. • Pirates also create distribution chains, selling to other pirates who then sell to consumers. You see this often with live events. There are even salesmen who go door-to-door selling these IPTV services. Content consumers are often confused about whether the content they’re getting is legal or not. • Licensing agreements that limit when and where content can be consumed can actually drive consumers to seek out pirate streaming sites. • Credential fraud allows people to access content without legally subscribing to a streaming service. This is another way service providers lose money. • Using encryption to keep OTT video content secure is a tricky thing. You need to allow those with the device to access the content, but pirates may also be accessing the content legitimately. Protecting that content using encryption is not as straightforward as it is with protecting personal info against external attacks. • The line between content protection and service protection blurs once the content is distributed. • The phases of protection are Protect, Detect, and Disrupt. Protecting won’t always be possible, Detecting involves figuring out who’s distributing the content and where and how they’re distributing it, and Disrupting is taking action and putting a stop to that distribution. • A major challenge with the streaming industry is that everything is so fragmented, and this fragmentation actually encourages piracy. After all, if we’re already subscribed to dozens of services and then a new service creates content we want, where do we draw the line? When do we start seeking that content elsewhere? At some point, these services will have to work together. • If you find that your own content is being distributed on YouTube, Facebook, or on search engines illegally, you can approach the platform. They’re required to take down those illegal links. • The challenge of countering piracy requires technological means (like watermarking and tracking pirate services), as well as legal means (like Take Down notices), and a group effort to make it easier for legal content to be consumed than it is for illegal content to be consumed. Some interesting quotes from today’s episode: “Because the technologies are out there that make it easy to start a [OTT] service, pirates can do the same. And it's just a matter of having access to the content… If you have any device that outputs content -- that can be a set-top box, that can be a PC -- and that content is being output, it can be captured, whether through the HTMI port, or using the screen grabbing software, or even, an extreme case of just taking a camera and having it opposite the monitor. You can capture that content. And once you can capture that content, you can re-stream it.” “One pirate will take a stream, a live stream, say of a sports event, and then they will sell that on to other pirates. So, you have a whole distribution chain and then those pirates will sell it on directly to consumers. And there’ll be resellers who are taking that content and selling it further and further along. There’s a lot of confusion very often among customers actually, as to what they're actually getting -- whether it's legal or not.” “A lot of these services, they call them IPTV services. We've seen in some countries, there will actually be a salesman going door to door. They'll knock on the door and I'll say, you know, ‘For $10 a month, would you like access to these 200 channels? We’ll set it up for you.’ They'll come in, they'll take a box of some sort and go plug it into your TV, and they'll set you up and set up the billing. Some of these guys have got 24/7 support -- pick up the phone and you have support -- and they look really legitimate. And then very often the customers themselves can't tell whether they're signing up for legitimate service or not.” “Very often these kinds of [licensing] arrangements actually drive consumers to use pirate services… We're actually seeing that kind of tendency. People are looking for content. There's actually a rise in the amount of content that's being viewed over Torrents these days because of these kinds of limitations.” “You can go on the dark web -- you can buy a set of credentials for a variety of streaming services and pay a lot less for those than you would if you were subscribing legally. And that’s also a major problem for the service providers today. There's a lot of money that they're losing to those kinds of attacks.” “In the case of video, it's a much more difficult problem because you're trying to protect the content on the device from the person who's holding the device. The pirate actually has a legitimate device with the content on it. And obviously you want a legitimate user to be able to view the content.” “There are different ways of capturing that content and then re-encoding. Today, just encrypting the content is really not enough.” “Whether it's Disney+, HBO Max, Netflix -- these new services are appearing every other day. And we all talk about the ‘streaming wars,’ but at some point they're going to have to recognize that they need to sort of get together and solve, what is really going to be a piracy problem. Because people are going looking for the content. People aren't going to sign up for ten different services. And if they don't happen to be subscribed to the particular service where there's content that they want, they're going to go look for it on Torrents. And so, they're going to have to find some way to work together after this fragmentation happens to sort of re-aggregate the content.” “Today, if you sign up for Spotify or Apple Music or Amazon, you're paying one monthly fee… You don't care what the label is behind the music. You’ve got access to all the music you could want. And when the video industry reaches a point where they make it easier to access content legally than it is to access it illegally, they will have largely solved a lot of the problems that they're seeing today.”

In June of 1999, two college programmers launched a program that would go on to change the face of the entire music industry. Napster was the first mainstream program that allowed users to share and download mp3's on a centralized, user-friendly peer to peer network. Within months of launching, Napster had millions of users sharing and downloading tens of millions of songs all over the world. In March of 2000, Metallica learned that an unreleased and unmixed version of their forthcoming single, "I Disappear" had been leaked to radio stations all over America. The leak was traced to Napster where Metallica also learned their entire catalogue was available for free. This prompted an April lawsuit and a year of bad press for Metallica as they sought not only to shut Napster down, but also to start a public dialogue about the relationship between commerce, art, intellectual property and the delicate future of artistic control in a digital age.In 2002 Napster filed for bankruptcy and liquidated it's assets. But in it's wake, countless other file sharing programs surfaced. Torrenting sites soon became ubiquitous. It seems that everything Metallica fought to protect was taken from them regardless of how the Napster controversy ended. What was left besides a tarnished reputation for Metallica? In this episode Clint, Ethan and their long time friend, Grammy nominated producer Paul Moak, break down the entire Napster saga in detail. They talk through the origin of Napster, the relevant details of the lawsuit, the demise and unlikely future of Napster and discuss the reaching implications into modern day streaming from the point of view of seasoned music industry professionals. If you think Metal Up Your Podcast has value, please consider taking a brief moment to leave a positive review and subscribe here:https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/metal-up-your-podcast-all-things-metallica/id1187775077You can further support the show by becoming a patron. Today we ask each other a simple question: "What apps do you use?". We cover mail clients, screenshot tools, terminals, image editors, list apps, and note-taking apps, to name a few. Along the way, we also explore our shared history as Photoshop cool-kids.
With the fragmenting of streaming services, people are turning back to illegal downloading to get access to the shows and movies they want to watch. We chat about the future of streaming, as well as the man who has built the entire Pokemon game in Minecraft...
10 guitars will be made from reclaimed materials from Jimi Hendrix's home, CES was kinda boring this year in my opinion, who knew downloading illegal files off torrent sites could be risky, more on Youtube's mess, Samsung is releasing GDDR6 GPU memory, and I want to where a diaper to a concert.
This week, Lee and Josh complain like old men about people who don't turn off their phones at the cinema, and chat about the upcoming Nosferatu for Halloween Month, Saturday Morning Cartoons, the sad closing of the Oxford in Halifax, Lucasfilm fun at Fan Expo, and the new website! They also mention the movies screening the week of September 8th - 14th: Lost In Paris, A Bag Of Marbles, Good Time, and the Wild Jumbo - the latest chapter in the amazing Stray Cat Rock saga!

I was a teenager in the days of Napster and LimeWire, when illegal files flowed through the internet like free hamburgers through a freshman dormitory orientation session. I didn't understand the legality of file sharing, let alone the technical explanation of how it worked. Peer-to-peer file distribution has changed over the years. Though I feel more savvy to the legal issues, I am no less dumbfounded by how it all works. That’s why I invited my colleague Ashley Carman onto this week’s show. She provides a brief history of file sharing, then explains how torrenting works in the present. Is it legal? Who does it hurt? Why do people use it? We have answers to all that and more. Blendover Episode 175: Blendover returns after a short break, and this week we kick off the show looking into a reversal of copyright law in the United Kingdom. The change in law essentially makes it illegal for anyone to rip their CDs (or other media) using iTunes, or any other type of media software with […]
Movie Menu Rants about Netflix Rant: With Adam Sandler making a deal with Netflix, will this change cinema as we know it? Hosted by: Alexander Z, Dan "The Man" Muñoz, and Christopher Velasco. Notes: Many things have been said about Adam Sandler But being a rebel has never been one of them He’s an actor who always plays it safe taking roles that he knows will only appeal to his base Movies like Jack And Jill (...) or Blended Both scoring less than 15% on Rotten tomatoes BUT scoring huge overseas number (i.e. sales) CLIP Ever so often, he’s been known to take risks such as being in Reign Over Me, playing a 9/11 PTSD victim living in NYC Or, one of my all time favorites: PUNCH DRUNK LOVE CLIP So is Adam Sandler a REBEL? Hmmm A boring commodity? ABSOLUTELY A waste of talent? OH YEAH A risk taker? SURE BUT A REBEL? What do you guys consider Sandler? OPEN DIALOGUE As of TWO WEEKS AGO, Sandler has found himself on a short blacklist that I suspect will be growing bigger with time to come EVER SINCE SANDLER made a deal with the ULTIMATE DEVILS of Hollywood: HARVEY WEINSTEIN and… NETFLIX Which is where my rant leads to… The Wolf of the World Wide Web.... NETFLIX BUT, before we start there you need to know three facts that will explain why Sandler is at the center of the controversy FACT 1: Movie studios DO NOT own or operate Movie Theaters 1948: United States v. Paramount Pictures known as the Hollywood Antitrust Case changed Hollywood by removing the monopolistic control that Studios had over Cinemas. Basically, the US government told Hollywood to go fuck itself and STOP touching Cinemas in their no-no place. FACT 2: THEATER OWNERS ARE AFRAID OF PIRACY Since the 1970s: Theater owners attempted to blockade the release of popular technology, such as VHS, DVD, BLURAY, and now… the Internet. FACT 3: INTERNET NEARLY KILLED THE THEATER Sales are down and Theater owners are scared of ILLEGAL STREAMING SITES, TORRENTING, AND NETFLIX. You name it, they’re scared of everything because… Sales are down for movie attendance 2014 WORST YEAR ON RECORD So I’d like to ask you guys, why do you think sales are down? OPEN DIALOGUE There are many theories revolving the loss of revenue, I believe theater owners are assholes and jacking up prices to make up for their lost in revenue. Which is what’s leading to the drop of attendance. Which is the equivalent of: An endless circlejerk that only ends with a dislocated member You’re not gonna attend a fancy theater that ends up costing you $50 for a date night. Don’t believe me? Go to a /quote/ ghetto /unquote/ theater and buy a ticket from there: Tickets drop from $18 to $6 Which is where NETFLIX has making a killing!!! The company was established in 1997 in California renovating the DVD subscription model AND upgrading to digital streaming IN 2009 (...) Which was basically copy and pasting from online piracy sites The only difference between online piracy sites was the speed in which you could watch a film on Netflix… and, of course, the legality of it. So why is Adam Sandler important in all this? Adam Sandler is the top grossing theater celebrity in the US and overseas Hard to believe, I know! But he grosses more money by just showing his stupid pineapple shaped head than most comedians. And he knows this! Makes movies for vacations He’s also #1 on Forbes most overpaid actors Because theaters know that Pineapple head makes money and the studios want it! So the fact that on October 2nd, Ted Sarandos, leader of content creation at Netflix teamed up with Harvey Weinstein THEEE BIGGEST FILM PRODUCER IN HOLLYWOOD to make FOUR Adam Sandler movies… YOU GODDAMN RIGHT THAT MOVIE STUDIOS AND MOVIE THEATERS RECOGNIZED THIS AS A HUUUUUUGE MOVE BECAUSE, Netflix has also promised SAME DAY RELEASES in theaters and streaming. Movie theaters are scared of losing more money and are being forced to work with Netflix because they do not want to cross Weinstein So what could film studios and theater owners do to punish Adam Sandler? WELL, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that Warner Bros. has shit canned his next movie, The Ridiculous Six yesterday. Holding all rights and kicking Sandler out of the lot! The Price is Wrong BITCH! So what do you guys think? Is Netflix under attack with this WB/Sandler move? You think Netflix stole fire from the Movie Gods? Do you think Netflix will be the ultimate winner in this battle? //**END … But we’ll have to wait and see… I’m… And that’ll do it for us here at Movie Menu Rants… Rate the rant!
