He's now one of only 400 people that have completed a Transcon. Navy LT Paul Johnson joins me on the "Run The Race" podcast (subscribe now) to talk about his 3,000 mile run and walk from Los Angeles to New York City, plus his new world record for a fitness challenge in Antarctica...all of this helping him and others with mental health issues, some that come from military deployments. (5:11) Johnson talks about how running is a coping mechanism for his anxiety and depression. He loves it so much he ran across the USA in 52+ days, raising more than half a million dollars in the process for nonprofit Team RWB that helps military veterans with healthy lifestyles. Listen to the pod to hear more about that org plus his stories about transcon training...challenges like sandstorm and heat...sleep and crew...lots of food, that may sound strange and delicious...mental strength throughout the epic journey...seeing the USA this way...and the documentary film all about it that will be streaming this Spring. (21:34) How do different military branches handle fitness, like his - the Navy? Regardless, Johnson talks about exercise being essential for stress management...for any of us. On long deployments, stuck on a ship at sea, it's tough. (27:24) Another environment that's one of the harshest in the world is Antarctica, where he and a Navy vet friend ran 100 miles in the fastest time ever, just under 24 hours through snow and major winds! He describes that immense challenge. (33:31) And Paul Johnson also enjoys helping other people meet their goals, sharing fun videos on social media with tips about a lot of things to do before/during/after runs and workouts. You'll also want to hear about his next goals that are unique and may sound crazy. We close our chat with why it's so important to support causes like Team RWB. You can still donate to them, on behalf of Paul's transcon and upcoming movie: https://donate.teamrwb.org/fundraiser/5143120. Thanks for listening to the #RunTheRace podcast! Nels Matson was born with a heart defect basically starving one side for oxygen. So basically, his first few years were like training at altitude. His own Leadville childhood. At the age of 3 he had open heart surgery and at 5 was released to play sports. He has never looked back, and most certainly has not taken his gifts for granted. He has used his gift of stamina to make a difference in the world and has done so with several causes. His most recent was a Transcon from San Francisco to New York City to raise funds and awareness for The Wounded Warrior Foundation as a part of Project Campbell's Call. In this week's episode we talk to runner and Naval Office, Paul Johnson about:The logistics of running across the United StatesRaising money for Team Red, White and BlueFueling for 3,000 miles in 52 days (and change)In 2018 Naval Officer Paul Johnson went on his first deployment overseas to Spain. While it led to amazing opportunities, it was a difficult tour that weighed heavily on him and his fellow Sailors. His next duty station took him to San Diego in 2021, and once removed from the constant stressful environment of his first deployment, he began noticing the issues he had been dealing with, like persistent sleep issues, anxiety, and depression. He had been using alcohol as a coping mechanism, but his narrative began shifting in 2022, when a Marine friend asked Paul to train and run the Marine Corps Marathon. He trained for months, and they both ended up finishing the marathon in under 3 hours, and receiving their Boston Qualifier. During this time, he realized how much running helped him cope with the anxiety/depression symptoms he was experiencing. In January 2023, with a move to the East Coast, he started a run streak. This quickly evolved into entering the ultra scene, running 100 mile races by April 2023. Running was his therapy, and he found release and escape in a positive way. This year (2024), he tackled the TransCon, running 3,000 miles from California to New York to raise awareness & funds for mental health issues facing veterans through Team Red White and Blue, which exists to enrich the lives of veterans by providing opportunities to build a healthier lifestyle. Please note that this podcast is created strictly for educational purposes and should never be used for medical diagnosis and treatment.***Keep up with Paul Johnson:IG: @pauijohnsonYT: @pauijohnsonWebsite/Donate to Team RWB: www.pauljohnson.run Mentioned:Sports Nutrition Education ProgramBoston Athletic Assn. Welcome to Episode 53 of the Eat for Endurance Podcast! I am so excited to have Mike Wardian back on the show to chat about his transcon run, which he completed this past July.I did an Athlete Nutrition Profile on Mike in April 2020, right after he won the Quarantine Backyard Ultra with 262 miles in 63 hours. If you would like to learn more about Mike's nutrition story as a plant-based athlete (he eats eggs and honey, but otherwise follows a vegan diet), check out Episode 26. Mike always is a joy to talk to, so full of passion and positivity, and of course he is an unbelievable athlete too. He wears so many hats it's hard to keep track of it all - he is a professional runner, mostly focusing on ultra endurance events but you can find him doing pretty much every distance, and he also does CrossFit, plays pickle ball, cycles, rows, keeps a beehive (or at least tries!), and goes after all kinds of fun, random world records, all while working and spending time with his wife and two teenage sons. He only sleeps four hours a night, but it's still mind-boggling how he is able to accomplish everything that he does! If you're not familiar with his Running Home project, Mike ran 3,234 miles over 61 days, from May 1st to July 1st, across 13 states, from San Francisco City Hall to Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, while raising over 100,000 dollars for World Vision's global clean water initiatives. I wanted to dig into all the details of how he fueled himself across the country, and of course, discuss some of the fun and crazy things that happened along the way.Thank you Mike for spending time with me on the podcast once again, and for continuing to inspire us all with your running accomplishments as well as your wonderful attitude towards life. Also - the audio was a bit choppy for some reason at certain points in the show. Grit, Guts and Determination: The Leadville Race Series Podcast
Welcome to this episode of Grit, Guts and Determination, The Leadville Race Series Podcast, a leading authority on all things Leadville. Host Cole Chlouber, son of race founder Ken Chlouber, takes us on a story-telling journey of the 38 year rich history of this race. Listen in for tips, tricks, and stories from the Leadville members! Today's episode features minimalist, runner, and Luna Sandal ambassador Patrick Sweeney! He first heard of Leadville from Christopher McDougall's book, Born to Run. As the conversation begins, Cole asks Patrick about his relationship with Barefoot Ted McDonald, founder of Luna Sandals. Ted is an independent athlete committed to rediscovering primal human capacities and encouraging others to do the same and he introduced Patrick to the Luna Lifestyle. In the early days, Patrick said he lived pretty simply hanging out on the internet, running on the beach, and finishing his days with good food and beers. He's recently moved in with girlfriend, Sam who he says is also very independent and minimalistic They live out on a ranch with plenty of room to run. Reflecting on his first Leadville experiences, Patrick shares that he was able to stay with the mayor and on a whim decided to run a 5K the next morning before running the Burro Race and coming in next to last. He couldn't get the burro to move, but he still remembers it as a great experience. When his first Leadville race started, he was shirtless and didn't have any crew or pacers. At one point he remembers doing a mile to a mile and a half off course. Then he started to experience a lot of knee pain, he had to slow to a walk and started feeling pretty demoralized. Eventually, his body mechanics changed and he started feeling a lot better and calculating how he could widdle down his run time. Patrick has five finishes at Leadville and the community keeps him coming back. He still does burro racing as well, having finished it about five or six times, enjoying it because you never know what to expect and have to adjust based on the donkey. He's hosted at Leadville as well and has been using it as an opportunity to raise money for the Leadville Animal Shelter. He also gives away plastic shovels he used to collect when running on the beach. One of his best memories though is running his TransCon and shares how his biggest takeaway was the generosity of Americans across the states. As the episode ends, Patrick reflects on the meaning of Leadville, the race, the people, and the town itself. Thanks for joining! Don't forget to like, share, and subscribe, and we hope to see you on the line in August!
We have heard some incredible stories over the past year, but this one just might take the cake. There is a prestigious record that had stood for almost 40 years before Sandra came and completely crushed it.In 1978 - Mavis Hutchinson set a new transcontinental record by running from Los Angeles to New York in a little over 69 days. It stood for 39 years, that's when Sandra set out on a longer and more difficult route (from San Francisco to New York) and completed it in only 54 days.So is Sandra a track star with a pedigree of elite athletisism? No! In fact this humble, incredibly gracious athlete is a single mother who describes herself as overweight - and needed to make a change in 2013/2014...Yeah - that's right! From starting a new workout routine in the treadmill of her local gym - to winning the Badwater Ultramarathon a few years later in 2017 - a race in 100+ degree heat, where one false step can literally melt the shoes off your feet. And then setting an impossible world record. You're going to love this incredibly inspiring conversation holder with an incredible woman.

You will surely be able to hear the passion in his voice as he shares the respect he had for this time machine with you as well as his dedication to mastering the art of flying a true legend of the sky - The Beech 18 - Warmly known by those who fly them as simply the "Twin Beech."
In this episode, I catchup and interview my long time friend and Hip Hop legend, Rob "Southstar" Campman. If you're my age, you will definitely remember him from the smash single "Tell Me" from his group Smiles and Southstar. The single peaked at #28 on the Billboards hot 100 and #10 on the US Hot Rap songs (Billboards) in 2003. Rob and I talked about how met on Aznraps.com which was a popular online forum for Asian rappers in the early to mid 2000s. From then on, we kept in contact via Aim (Aol) and social media. I had a lot of questions regarding the music industry and his rise to fame and Rob answered them all. He shared so many great stories from his humble beginnings, from rapping in the bathroom & getting invited to a local studio to record some raps, to playing basketball in a gym, which let to meeting Transcon Records in house producer, Dakari. Dakari played beats for him and invited him to Transcon studios and the rest was history. Smiles and Southstar got signed to Artist Direct Records and released their debut album, "Crash The Party," and made noise all over the world, touring with Beanie Man, doing shows and tv appearances on MTV, BET's Rap City, Soul Train, Late night with Conan, Jimmy Kimmel, The Jennie Jones show, just to name a few. Currenly, Rob has been doing podcast style Instagram lives weekly on Wednesday. His show is called "Conversations" and he has lots of great music industry guests who share their story and life advice on the platform. Make sure you check him out and support his new endeavor! There are so much gems in this interview so I hope you guys watch it from beginning to end as its very inspirational and informative, especially if you have a passion for music or just dream in general. Given unmet medical need, differentiated product profile, and competitor having large recall last year, I believe the commercial opportunity for Ascendis Pharma's TransCon treatment for PTH patients is not fully priced into the stock. I believe there is significant re-rating potential for Ascendis as well as M&A optionality.

The TransCon is a self-supported, single-stage bike race across Europe. The clock starts and doesn’t stop until you arrive at the finish. And aside from a few checkpoints, there’s no set route. Participants map and plan their way across Europe and decide where and when to ride, eat and sleep along the way. In 2016, the race started in Belgium. And 3,800km and 13 days, 10 hours later, Emily arrived in Istambul, winning the women’s category in the process! While we discuss some of the events and adventures she’s had over the years, there are 2 key themes throughout this conversation. First, why it's important not to let what you've done (or not done) in the past define or limit what you think you’re capable of in the future. And secondly, being open to the idea that things which currently seem impossible actually aren’t. The RunRunLive 4.0 Podcast Episode 4-408 – Bill Endures (Audio: link) audio:http://www.RunRunLive.com/PodcastEpisodes/epi4408.mp3] Link MarathonBQ – How to Qualify for the Boston Marathon in 14 Weeks - Hello, my friends and welcome to episode 4-408 of the RunRunLive Podcast. Well, folks it's been almost a month since Boston, so let's get back on track, back in the saddle and do some serious podcasting! Grr… I'm sitting in the Starbucks, one of the two Starbucks that is on my work commute route. My hands are a bit cold. I road my motorcycle this morning. It's in the low 40's but sunny. I like to stop and write for small patched of time in the morning at these oases of warmth and humanity. I've got some calls that I'll take from here and then I'll wander into my office later. Today we've got a great chat with Bill who is one of those crunchy, old ultra-runners who have done everything. I was interested in how he did his cross country run and he definitely has a view point on it! In section one we'll talk about working through a post event funk. In section two I'll keep pounding away on the big, navel-gazing topics of Eckhart Tolle's book. I'm training, actually in my taper for Vermont. I have had some good workouts and some not-so great workouts. In general I've kept the weight off and my training paces are good. I've got some high-hamstring-attach point challenges that I'm trying to rehab through. The challenge with extended training cycles on the road is that they tend to get very specific and make you fragile. Somehow this long cycle has made my hips and glutes a bit weak and they go on me in the high miles. It's the same old story, lower the water level and you find new rocks. Keep training and you'll find new weak points. So I'm working through that. We talked for awhile, but I'll save the updates for the Outro. … I will tell one story. It's a story about a giant, half-eaten catfish. When I was in elementary school, so 8, 9, 10 years old I had a best friend whose name was Dave. We built a fort in the rafters of my Dad's garage one summer and decorated it with stickers from Mad Magazine. I can remember listening to “Ricky Don't Loose That Number” by Steely Dan on the pop station, which would make it 1975ish. I'd go over to Dave's house on the weekends and we'd disappear into the woods and roads around his house to go exploring. We would wander over to the train tracks and put pennies on the tracks for the trains to smoosh, things like that. One time we were out on the power lines behind his house, the same power lines that I ride my mountain bike on and do long trail runs on now. It was this time of year – spring in New England. What happens in spring is we get the melt and a lot of rain and the ponds, rivers and swamps all fill up with water. For instance, I have a little pond in my back yard, right now that only exists this time of year. Anyhow we were wandering through this patch of swamp that had recently been a pond and we came across a giant catfish, high a dry, with a bit missing from the scavengers. Too bad we didn't' have Instagram back then. Here was this enormous fish, as if dropped form the sky by aliens into the middle of a field. That's a 50-60 year-old fish that took a wrong turn somewhere. I'll always remember that image in my internal Instagram, which is probably much better than the actual picture anyhow. I tell this story because my Mom called to tell me Dave died this week. I hadn't spoken to him in decades. BNot to be morbid, but I want you to understand and appreciate today as a gift. We're all winning. We are all in extra innings and you and I are blessed. Don't waste it. On with the show. … I'll remind you that the RunRunLive podcast is ad free and listener supported. I started running in 1978 and ran my 1st ultra in 1979. Ran my 1st 24Hr around 1982 and my 1st 6 Day race in 1984. My best was in 1989 when I won with 475 miles. The next year, 1990, I took a sabbatical from teaching and ran a US Trascon water to water in 95 days. (Huntington Beach, CA to Atlantic City, NJ. I've been Co-RD for the Dawn To Dusk To Dawn Track Ultras (D3) since 1984. This year's race will be the 24th edition. Along with my own running, I've been helping Mike Melton time ultras from 100K to 6 Days around the country (13 last year). Attached are some Articles that came out back in 1989 and 1990 regarding my Transcon and my best 6 Day race. Here are a few links. Section two – No-Mind - Outro Well, my friends you called ahead, made your plans and safely ran across the nation in record time to the end of the RunRunLive Podcast episode 4-408, nmaybe it's tome to retire? Don't get caught in a funk! Enochs results Like I said I am in a short training cycle for the Vermont City Marathon. There's just no way I'm going to walk away without my qualifying time this spring. I'm in too good shape. If you're going to be up there let me know and we'll say high. I'm going to pitch a tent in the park there for a couple nights. It's something I learned from mountain bike racing. Just pitch a tent you'll be fine! I got a new Garmin, a 235. I'll give you a write up at some point. I'm still figuring it out, but I like it so far. One quick story / iPhone tip for you to take you out. I have an iPhone 6s. like it. I listen to podcasts and music on it. When I drive to work I tend to listen to podcasts. Now, for some reason, when I plug in the phone to the radio I put in my truck, it decides to start playing the first song, alphabetically in the song list on my phone. The first song alphabetically in the song list on my phone was a really aggressive punk rock number called “Already Dead” by Rancid. The challenge I had was that some of the podcasters I listen to, and I won't name any names, haven't figured out how to level their audio. You have to turn them way up to hear them. The result, as you may have guessed by now, was that I'd get blown out of my seat a couple times a week when I plugged in my phone for the ride to work. It was like having an audio bomb go off in the truck! Eventually I was moved to engineer a solution. I downloaded a really mild morning meditation and renamed it lower case aaaaaaa-filename…. Now I am greeted by a lovely, low and soothing voice encouraging me to embrace the day. It's much better. And if someone is in the car with me I get to tell this story. As a corollary, I also changed the my alarm to wake up in the morning on my iPhone to be an compilation of inspirational “seize the day!” type speeches. If you want me to walk you through the how to's just shoot me a note. And I'll see you out there. MarathonBQ – How to Qualify for the Boston Marathon in 14 Weeks - Rachel -> Coach Jeff ->
