How To Give Your Nervous System A Real Break

I've just returned from Self Love Camp, a retreat where I spent a few days guiding breathwork, listening to inspiring speakers, learning new things, and stepping away from the routines of everyday life.As I drove home, I found myself reflecting on something I always notice after retreats and intentional breaks: I come back feeling different. Clearer. More creative. More connected to myself. And it got me wondering - what is it about stepping away that feels so powerful? In this episode of Take a Breath, I explore how to give your nervous system a real breath and what I believe is one of the missing ingredients in modern life: space. Space to think, feel, reflect and hear yourself again. Drawing on neuroscience, nervous system science, and my own experiences of attending and hosting retreats, I share why creating intentional space isn't a luxury - it's something our brains and bodies genuinely need.In this episode, I share:

In this episode, I'm joined by psychologist and mum, Jacquie Ward, for a really honest conversation about attachment, motherhood and the pressure modern mums are carrying right now. There's so much noise online about what “good” parenting should look like. And for a lot of mothers, it's creating anxiety, guilt and the feeling that no matter what they do, they're getting it wrong. So in this episode, we unpack what attachment actually is, what secure attachment really means, and why so many women are feeling torn between wanting to be deeply present mothers while also wanting purpose, ambition and fulfilment outside of parenting too.We talk about:- The difference between attachment and temperament- Why secure attachment does not mean being with your child 24/7 and what research actually says about secure attachment- How to create strong connection with your children while also honouring yourselfIf you're a mother who constantly feels pulled between wanting to do everything “right” for your children while also wanting something for yourself too, I know this episode will help. You do not have to lose yourself to be a good mother.Connect with Jacquie:Instagram: @jacquiewardWebsite: www.jacquieward.com.auResources for youWanting to understand your nervous system better so you can focus on responding rather than reacting? Have you ever set a boundary, chosen yourself, or walked away from a situation you knew wasn't healthy only to find yourself overwhelmed with guilt, anxiety, self-doubt, or the urge to go back?If so, you're not alone. In this episode, Dr. Kelly Kessler explores one of the biggest misconceptions about boundaries: the hard part isn't setting them. The hard part is staying loyal to yourself afterward. You'll learn why choosing yourself can trigger anxiety, guilt, overthinking, and the pull back into old patterns of self-abandonment. Kelly explains how the nervous system often interprets disappointing others, creating conflict, or stepping outside familiar roles as a threat, making it difficult to maintain boundaries even when you know they're right for you.In this episode, you'll discover:• Why boundaries often feel harder after you've set them• The connection between guilt, people-pleasing, and self-abandonment• Why your mind spirals and your body reacts after choosing yourself• How fear of rejection, conflict, and disappointing others keeps you stuck• The difference between setting a boundary and staying loyal to yourself• How to build the nervous system capacity to stop abandoning yourselfIf you've ever found yourself taking back a boundary, overexplaining your decisions, or questioning whether you're being selfish for honoring your needs, this conversation will help you understand what's really happening beneath the surface.Because the goal isn't simply setting boundaries. The goal is becoming the woman who can stay connected to herself even when guilt, fear, uncertainty, and other people's expectations try to pull her back into self-abandonment.Connect with Kelly:Ready to go deeper? If this episode resonated, start with my free Self-Abandonment Audit — a powerful first step to uncover where you may be putting everyone else first, overriding your needs, or talking yourself out of what you know is right for you.Get the audit here:https://drkellykessler.com/selfauditReady for more support? What if the most important skill of our moment isn't knowing more, but knowing what's actually worth caring about?Mark Manson is the bestselling author of The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck and Everything Is F*cked, with three #1 New York Times bestsellers and tens of millions of readers around the world. The last time Mark joined Finding Mastery was in 2020, mid-COVID, when uncertainty was loud and the world felt strange. Five years on, the world is no less strange... it's just strange differently. The information ecosystem has fractured. Trust is harder to find. And the same noise we worried about five years ago has become the air we all breathe. In this conversation with Dr. Michael Gervais, Mark walks through the three principles he's organized his life and work around: radical ownership, radical honesty, and radical acceptance. He explains why ownership is the foundation under everything, because nothing else really works until you take it. He explains why his bar for honesty is anything "relevant or pertinent to somebody's wellbeing." And he talks about why radical acceptance, the Buddhist part of him, is what allows agency without collapse. The conversation moves into territory both timely and timeless. Mark and Mike dig into why the decline of religion has helped the self-help industry explode, why a spiritual framework remains one of the strongest known protective factors for mental health, and how the comparison machinery in our brains, designed for a tribe of thirty, now buckles under the weight of three hundred million people on Instagram.Mark also opens up about Purpose, the AI app he's built, and what he learned designing it to be intentionally disagreeable. He explains why a yes-man entourage, whether it's people around a star athlete or an AI that agrees with everything you say, quietly untethers people from reality. And he shares the stoic-style practice he uses to stay honest with himself: imagining what would be true if he were the problem, then holding that thought lightly enough to set it back down.By the end, Mark and Mike land on what feels like the heart of the episode... You can be perfect as you are, and you can always be better. Both can be true.In this conversation, we explore:Why sincerity has become the most valuable signal in a fractured information landscapeThe three principles Mark uses to navigate uncertainty: radical ownership, radical honesty, and radical acceptanceHow our ancient comparison brain breaks under the weight of social media at scaleWhy a spiritual framework remains one of the strongest known protective factors for mental healthThe premortem practice that helps Mark stay honest with himself, and why most of us avoid itWhy an AI (or a person) that agrees with everything you say is a slow-motion mental health riskHow to use AI as a thought partner without letting it do your thinking for youThe question that keeps Mark up at night, and might be worth asking yourselfIf you've ever felt like the noise is winning, or like you've lost the thread on what's worth caring about, this conversation offers a sturdier place to stand.Links & ResourcesThis episode is brought to you in part by our partner, Sunlighten, the company that has pioneered infrared sauna technology. Have you ever felt like you were doing everything “right” on your healing journey—only to find yourself right back in your old pain on your personal growth journey?Maybe you finally found a healing modality that worked. You felt grounded, regulated, even hopeful. And then one comment, one moment of disconnection, or one unexpected ending stirred something much deeper—bringing old wounds, loneliness, or abandonment back to the surface. In this deeply personal solo episode, I'm reintroducing myself—not just as your host, but as a woman actively in the midst of her own healing.I share openly about my recent breakup after a 3.5-year relationship, and how it activated an abandonment wound I've carried since childhood. Despite years of personal growth and trauma-informed work, I realized something important: healing isn't about finding the right tool—it's about going deeper into the body when old patterns resurface. That realization led me back to Somatic Experiencing and Internal Family Systems (IFS)—two practices that helped me slow down, reconnect with my body, meet my protective parts with compassion, and begin rebuilding self-trust from the inside out and tend to an old abandonment wound that I've carried since childhood.Because the truth is: the only way to find joy again… is to go through the pain.In this episode, I share how nervous system regulation became the foundation for real trauma healing and helped me shift lifelong relationship patterns—how physical symptoms pointed the way forward, and how learning to stay with sensations (instead of avoiding it) expanded my capacity to feel, grieve, and eventually experience joy again. In this episode, you'll learn:What  somatic healing looks like in everyday lifeWhy nervous system regulation is the gateway to deeper emotional healingHow Internal Family Systems (IFS) and parts work helped me relate differently to the parts that once helped me surviveHow healing childhood trauma can restore your capacity for joy.Why building tolerance for physical sensations is essential to trauma recoveryHow healing after divorce laid the foundation for healing after this breakup. What it means to fully grieve, feel, and slowly reconnect with yourselfIf you're navigating heartbreak, grief, or the confusion of feeling “set back” on your healing journey, this episode is a gentle reminder: nothing is wrong with you. Send us a textHiieee. I'm back…And honestly… I didn't plan to be away this long. But something in me needed silence. Needed space. Needed nothing.Because if you'd asked me even a few weeks ago how I felt about 2025, I would have said I was more than ready to burn it to the ground. And look… that wasn't totally wrong. But after a month of blank space, nature walks, long lazy beach days, and doing random little things simply because they felt good (a concept!)… my relationship to the year softened. Not because it was “easy” or “beautiful” -  it wasn't.But because I can finally see what it actually did to me. What it cracked open. What it initiated me into. And what I'm absolutely not taking with me into 2026.This episode is a very vulnerable and off-the-cuff reflection on what last year really held behind the scenes. The shadow stuff. The identity stuff. The nervous system stuff. The “I don't even recognise who tf I am any more” kinda stuff. And I'm sharing the first part of what I'm carrying into 2026… not in a goals/resolutions way- at ALL -  more like guiding lights. Like anchors. Like devotion.Because if there's one thing I KNOW this year is asking from me it's more unfiltered truth, so let's buckle up and dive in.In part 1 of this 2 part episode series I'm sharing: ✨ Why 2025 felt like a full-blown identity death (and why I'm weirdly grateful now) ✨ What changed after a month of silence + space ✨ The difference between forcing your life vs letting life move through you ✨ Why I'm not doing goals / a word of the year / a 47-step vision board plan in 2026 ✨ The first thing I'm prioritising this year ✨ Why “capacity” is the real reason you receive more (or don't) ✨ How to meet a new year differently,  without pressure, pretending or abandoning yourselfIf 2025 cracked you open too… if you've felt tender, disillusioned, confused, reborn… or like the old version of you just doesn't fit anymore…I hope this is the medicine your soul needs today.Let's Connect

It's about clarity, compassion, and naming invisible dynamics so you can stop blaming yourself for struggles that were never yours to fix. What You'll LearnWhy emotional loneliness is a defining experience for many adult childrenWhat “emotional immaturity” actually looks like in parentsHow people-pleasing, caretaking, and guilt develop as survival strategiesWhy setting boundaries often triggers backlash—and how to respondHow guilt can be a sign of emotional coercion, not wrongdoingWhat it means to emotionally disengage and reclaim space for yourselfIf you've ever felt like you're the problem in your family, struggled with guilt around boundaries, or exhausted yourself managing other people's emotions—this episode is for you.Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents — Dr. Lindsay GibsonRecovering from Emotionally Immature Parents — Dr. Lindsay Gibsondrlindsaygibson.comWatch this episode on YouTubeWant help with your ADHD? Ever notice how big milestones don't always make you want to pop champagne… they make you stare at the ceiling and think, “Wow. That was a lot.”Episode 250 is not a victory lap or a greatest-hits episode. It's a pause. A real one. The kind where you look back at 250 conversations about love, healing, boundaries, self-worth, and becoming yourself and ask, “What actually worked… and what was I just tolerating?” Spoiler: self-love isn't cute quotes or morning affirmations. It's the unglamorous practice of choosing yourself when it would be easier not to.Instead of giving you another “do better this year” pep talk, this episode pulls together the patterns that kept showing up again and again across 250 honest conversations. Consider it your Self-Love Cheat Sheet not for perfection, but for real life. The messy, evolving, sometimes-what-even-is-this chapter you're probably in right now.Episode Resources✨ PLM 250 Celebration | January 14 | Manila (BGC)A Start the Year in Your Power talk and guided meditation where we pause, reflect, release, and intentionally step into the version of you that's ready for what's next.

As the year comes to a close, many of us are taking stock — not just of what we did, but of who we believe we are.In this episode, we're talking about self-concept: the thoughts and beliefs you hold about yourself, how they were formed, and how they quietly shape your emotions, relationships, and choices — often without you realizing it.So many of the things we believe about ourselves feel like facts… but they're not. They're thoughts — many of them inherited from childhood, authority figures, culture, or past experiences — and they can be changed.Inside this episode, I share:What self-concept actually is (and what it's not)How early experiences shape the way we see ourselvesWhy “positive thinking” often backfiresA powerful question that opens a new path forward: Who would I be without this thought? How to shift self-judgment without forcing yourself to believe something that doesn't feel trueWhy changing your self-concept isn't about becoming someone else — it's about freeing yourselfIf you've ever felt like you aren't capable of changing your life, this conversation offers a gentler, more empowering way to look at yourself — one that creates possibility instead of pressure.Work With MeIf you want support with this work:✨ Join my membershipYou can come into the community this week for a free 7-day trial. In this episode, I'm joined by Broadcaster & Mental Health Ambassador, Matt Johnson for a grounded, practical conversation about letting go of archetypes and expectations and instead getting honest about who you are, where your patterns come from, and how to forgive yourself and start again with intention. We talk about purpose, motivation and self-doubt, why kindness to yourself is not optional, and how - particularly if you're self-employed - you can create your own validation. Matt shares practical ways to regulate your mental health, from journalling and movement to breathwork, meditation, nature and switching off screens, and why being proactive with these tools doesn't just prevent burnout, but makes life easier and happier overall.Matt's advice: Don't be concerned with archetypes, be what you want to beFace up to what you are - and work out why, where things come fromThen forgive yourselfStart again: what do you want?Try to be more purposeful, better motivatedIgnore the self-doubts and be kind to yourselfIf you're self-employed (no appraisal, no Christmas party) try to find substitutes for these thingsProvide your own validation, remind yourself of your own worthWhen things don't work out, don't always blame yourselfFind out how to regulate your mental health, what works for you (journalling/yoga/breathwork/meditation/nature/no screens)Be proactive about using these coping mechanismsImpose boundaries and stick to them (especially with social media)This will a) prevent burnout and b) make life easier and happier!FF&M enables you to own your own PR & produces podcasts.Recorded, edited & published by Juliet Fallowfield, 2025 MD & Founder of PR & Communications consultancy for startups Fallow, Field & Mason.  Email us at hello@fallowfieldmason.com or DM us on instagram @fallowfieldmason. MUSIC CREDIT Funk Game Loop by Kevin MacLeod. Check out the collection of fidgets Team Shiny loves! You know that moment when you're doing something hard, painful, or just plain exhausting, and a tiny voice whispers, "Why is this so hard for me?" You're not alone and in this episode we'll break down where that comes from and how to escape the shame spiral. We're joined again by therapist Grace Gautier, a trans woman who works closely with trans and neurodivergent communities. Last week the group cracked open the shame so many of us carry about being “too much” or “not enough” and began to see those traits not as flaws, but as survival strategies. If you haven't heard that one yet, listen here. It's a grounding prequel to this one—especially if you've ever felt like you had to earn your way into belonging. This episode follows that path even deeper! Because once you name the systems that shaped you, the question becomes: now what? It's a conversation about internalized ableism, pushing through pain to prove worth, and the quiet (and sometimes loud) practice of unmasking. Not everywhere. Not all at once. Just somewhere. Together, they unpack:Why we equate doing hard things with being good enoughHow ableism hides in everyday pressure and perfectionismWhat it looks like to stop chasing ease and start honoring honestyThe quiet power of choosing to show up as yourselfIf you've ever felt stuck over performing while quietly falling apart, this conversation might be a the paradigm shift you need.
