A response to the Bishop Wooden "Church Girl" controversy. What's the big deal? Beyoncé sampled a gospel song by Twinkie Clark who he called a 'real church lady'. He attacked Beyoncé in vicious patriarchal terms, demonized her and stated she sold her soul to the devil among other ridiculous allegations. His attack was anti-Christ, because Jesus loved women, healed them and would never berate them their person and womanhood. Buckle up! This fiery message explores why this is dangerous rhetoric that could keep church folks from heaven and how idolatry has infiltrated the church. Christians need to repent, abandon their idols and return to Jehovah God.

This week on People+Culture we sit down with Bishop Smith. Bishop L. Spenser Smith grew up the 3rd of 4 children but always seemed to standout among the Smith clan; accomplishing great things ahead of his age. Growing up as a musical prodigy, he began singing before audiences at the age of 4, taught himself to play piano at age 11, and secured his first minister of music position at age 12. Reared in a musically gifted and deeply religious family, it was clear where Bishop Smith's path would eventually lead him. After graduating with honors from Cross High School in 1989, he attended Florida A&M University, majoring in Music Education. While there, he was a member of the World Famous Marching 100 and Director of the FAMU Gospel Choir. After graduating in 1995, he worked in the Duval County Public School System as a middle school band director. In 1996, at the age of 26, Bishop Smith began his pastoral ministry at the New Testament Church, Inc. in Tuscaloosa, Alabama after the untimely passing of his father-in-law, the Reverend Charles E. Moore. His profound and courageous leadership has caused the ministry to be a life-changing force, not only in Tuscaloosa, but throughout the region and nation. In 2000 at the age of 29, he became one of the youngest men to be duly consecrated as a Bishop in his reformation, Kingdom Fellowship Covenant Ministries, based in Baltimore, MD. In 2005, Bishop Smith founded the IMPACT HOUSE in Birmingham, AL, a thriving ministry impacting the South Central region. Bishop Smith's accomplishments are numerous. They include: • Highly- Sought Life Coach & Inspirational Speaker • Stellar Award Nominated Recording Artist, Songwriter, Producer, working with gospel artists such as Donald Lawrence, Twinkie Clark, Karen Clark-Sheard, Men of Standard, and Marvin Sapp • Author of the new books, The Altar'ed Life & Getting Ready for Love • Who's Who Among American Executives and Leaders • The American Heritage of Leaders Honor Recipient • Member, Joint College of Bishops Congress, Cleveland, OH • President, Unity Covenant Fellowship of Interdependent Churches and Ministries, • CEO, Move With Him Entertainment • Senior Pastor, The Impact Nation Fellowship Church, Birmingham & Tuscaloosa • He is the husband of the beautiful Patrice Moore Smith, and the father of 3 lovely and gifted children: Jori Aaliyah, Jamel Alexander, and Jarren Andre • Doctorate of Divinity, St. Thomas Christian College, Jacksonville, FL. • A proud member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. As a young man, he embraces his purpose for life as one that is to empower others, especially young people, for success and achievement; encouraging a new generation of leaders to emerge through a strong belief in God and a heart for His will, and faith to persevere through life's challenges to manifest the Kingdom of God.

After experiencing the new Jesus Is King album, the Moist Boys were convinced to walk the path of God, now making this a Chinese and Christian podcast. The sermon first starts off with an extensive breakdown and review of the holy book itself, "Jesus Is King" by Kanye West (16:20). While on the Christian high road, the boys try to make sense of recent twitter trends like "Verify Satan" and how to avoid getting your soul snatched and your asshole pounded by the Dark King himself (1:15:00). With religion out of the way, the boys look into a mirror to do some self reflection on their age and inability to comprehend what memes have become and what a Vibe Check is (1:21:30) (or somewhere around there). As if the old men couldn't get any older, a debate ensues on the topic of Trans Athletes and their place in sports (1:25:30). After insightful conversation filled with both false information and blatant lack of knowledge in the area, the sermon ends off with some lighthearted christian stories (1:41:41) and just about the greatest porn idea to ever cross the minds of these devout born again religious men. Music was brought to us by the beautiful Twinkie Clark.

The Major Scale

The Major Scale is testifying the word of the gospel this episode. First, we pay tribute to the dearly departed Della Reese. She began he career as a singer of immense force and beauty, commanding a range that spanned from Puccini, the deep roots of the blues, Tin Pan Ally, and Gospel. Ms. Reese could deliver it all with spine tingling and soul stirring results. Lynda Blensky, Reese's rep, said it best: "We lost a magnificent woman who was a trailblazer in many ways." The term legend gets used a bit much, but it applies tenfold to an artist like Al Kooper. His work with Bob Dylan, the Zombies, and Lynyrd Skynyrd alone is enough to put him in the history books. He also founded Blood, Sweat, and Tears, which made him a Jazz Rock innovator. Mr. Kooper joins us to talk about a couple of his favorite subjects – gospel music and jazz piano. He also takes over the turntables to plug in a great set from Bobby Timmons, Les McCann, Horace Silver, and Twinkie Clark of the Clark Sisters. SONG CREDITS FOR THIS EPISODE: THEME: Jazz Phantom by Chomsk' (from the album "Different Beats" on Magnetic Records). FIRST HALF: Lonelyville By Della Reese (from the film “Let's Rock” by Columbia Pictures). Don't You Know by Della Reese (from the album “The Classic Della Reese” on RCA/Victor). If I Never Get to Heaven by Della Reese (from the album  “I Like It Like Dat” on ABC/Paramount). Swing Low, Sweet Chariot by Della Reese (from the album “The Best Thing For You” on Jasmine Records). Billy My Love by Della Reese (from the album “Right Now” on Avco/Embassy Records). It's Magic by Della Reese (from the album “The Angelic Della Reese” on Magnitude Records). A House Is Not A Home by Della Reese (from the album “On Strings of Blue” on ABC/Paramount). Someday by Della Reese (from the CBC TV Show on CBC Television). Brand New Day by Della Reese (from the album “Right Now” on AVCO/Embassy Records). SECOND HALF:  My Days Are Numbered by Blood, Sweat & Tears (from the album “Child Is Father To The Man” on Columbia Records). Sister Sadie by Horace Silver (from the album “Blowin'the Blues Away” on Blue Note Records). Moanin' by Bobby Timmons (from the album “This Here is Bobby Timmons” on Riverside Records). ABOUT THE MAJOR SCALE: Your attention please to a new program that celebrates and takes a fresh and bold look at the great American art form- JAZZ!!! The Major Scale is the title, the motto and the mission are, Jazz- past, present, future, and everything in between. A lot of focus will be on new and fresh sounds, deep cuts, closer looks at underrated artists, taking a different look at some of the titans of the genre, and getting the two cents worth from a number of surprise guests and sources. The Major Scale can boast amongst it's guests- legends like Herbie Hancock, Tom Scott, and Ahmad Jamal. The up and coming and the underrated-Kamasi Washington, Mia Doi Todd, Michael Blake. Fresh perspectives and commentary from the likes of Rock legend Al Kooper, who weighed in on the gospel. From The New Yorker, Amanda Petrusich expounds on her article about the movement to rename the Williamsburg Bridge in honor of Sonny Rollins. We explore the Soul-Jazz experiments of the Rascals. Grace Kelly from The Late Show with Stephen Colbert talks about her pop-up/flash mob concerts. Plus Thundercat, Henry Mancini, Ghostface Killah, Jaimie Branch, Nels Cline, Badbadnotgood, Cecil Taylor, and more get pick up on the Major Scale radar. Produced in Central Florida, this program seeks to become one of the defining voices of this Native American art form, and everything else that finds itself under it's umbrella. Think about programming and content found on the likes of World Cafe, Philadelphia, PA. Tiny Desk from Washington D.C., and KEXP Live from Seattle, WA. and that's what the Major Scale strives to do. For the curious, and lovers of music who like the details in between. Thanks to everyone who supported the show this year. 2017 has been a good un so it's that time again when I take a look back over the past 12 months and pull out some of my favourite cuts that were released this year. Always a headache to squeeze everything into a 3 hour special (I actually went over by 30 mins!) but overall I'm happy with the selection. For several years, Terrie has performed as a background vocalist with Gospel Artists such as the late Daryl Coley, Grammy-award winning Twinkie Clark and Karen Clark Sheard. By 2014, Terrie catapulted to center stage as a Gospel artist releasing several singles such as “Zion” (2014), “I Was Created” (2015) and “Blessin' Me” (2015). She continued to evolve into a television personality with creating and producing an internet Reality DocuSeries simply titled “All About Terrie.” In 2016, Terrie toured throughout the United States promoting her Gospel music; but in 2017, she crossed genres to become and record as a R&B/Soul artist. Her first single under her new genre was a cover of the Evelyn Champagne King widely successful 1982 hit, “Love Come Down” which was released in July 2017 with production by CEO of Rhythm Avenew Entertainment, Deryck “D.Rim” Rimson. Later in the same year, she released a cover of the late Donny Hathaway Holiday hit, "This Christmas." After a 6-month hiatus, Terrie released her debut album "Threads of Love" which was released on September 28, 2018. Terrie's current single, penned by both her and her son, Deryck "D.Rim" Rimson, entitled "It's Not Worth It" is currently making waves in the UK and Amazon Charts. Terrie Rimson is not just another R&B/Soul singer, but she is the strength of love in the melody of music. Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/ladydiva-live-radio/exclusive-content

Brittney Spencer is a songwriter-singer who sung and recorded with United Pursuit, Carrie Underwood, Carl Thomas, Jason Nelson and Twinkie Clark of The Clark Sisters, to name a few. While working as a minister of music at a progressive historic Black Church (AME) in Baltimore, Brittney was exposed to the role of culture in music, religion and much of her life's experiences that led to her storytelling finding expression as part of the Common Hymnal family since 2016. Malcolm du Plessis has been relentless in calling others into the decolonising of the worship movement and for doors of dignity to be unlocked for more communities and ethnicities to contribute toward the ‘common' hymnal. Malcolm has straddled the worlds of prophetic Christianity and showbiz for over thirty years initially as an instigator of multi-ethnic, multi-lingual worship that fused praise and protest in the apartheid era of his native South Africa. “I moved from one South Africa to another” and now in the USA Malcolm continues to lead as mentor to a new generation in activists and artists helping develop top 40 songwriters.
