What was your approach to making this version of Selina feel immediately distinct from page one? This Selina feels very self-made, with high-tech gear and a life she's built outside Gotham. What interested you about exploring her at that stage in her life? The Absolute Universe already introduced Selina in Absolute Batman. How did you approach taking an established version of the character and expanding her into her own series? Speaking of collaboration, how do you and Scott split the writing duties? Are you breaking story together, or does one of you take the lead in certain areas? Bengal's art really sells the motion and the tech, especially in action scenes. How closely are you working with him in terms of visual storytelling, and were there any sequences you were especially excited to see him bring to life? The Calicos are a really intriguing addition, with that more classic Catwoman-inspired look. What can you tease about their role in Selina's past and how they shape who she is now? This version of Selina has some bold new elements, including her enhanced gear and abilities. Without spoiling too much, how far are you planning to push what Catwoman can be in the Absolute Universe?
On this week's AIPT Comics Podcast, we're joined by writer Zack Kaplan to talk about two ambitious new projects that tap into some of today's biggest anxieties. First up is Only the Savage Are Left, Kaplan's new post-apocalyptic series with Stefano Raffaele, which imagines a world overrun by a virus that transforms people into monsters. During the conversation, Kaplan digs into the moral dilemmas at the heart of the series, the challenge of creating a new kind of monster apocalypse, and why the story's central romance is just as important as its horror. We also discuss The Smart Division, his upcoming AI-driven crime thriller with John Pearson, exploring how rapidly advancing technology, generational divides, and questions about institutional trust shaped the book's premise. Dave: The Twilight Zone #7 (Juni Ba connecting cover) Alex: Poison Ivy #45 Cover B Noobovich Variant Interview: Zach Kaplan (art by Stefano Raffaele) talks Only the Savage Are Left (Out June 3) The Smart Division out August 5, FOC Jun 29th Only the Savage Are Left presents a world where survival itself requires violence. What was the starting point for the virus concept, and how did you land on the idea that the “cure” is tied to killing another infected person? There's an early suggestion in the book that civilization didn't collapse because people failed to work together, but because they turned on each other. How much of this story is meant to reflect real-world anxieties about how fragile social order really is? You've described the idea that “civilized society is a failed experiment.” How does that philosophy shape Ryder's journey, especially as someone who begins the story outside that cycle of violence? Ryder starts off relatively sheltered, living behind a wall and seemingly untouched by the infection. What interested you about telling a story through a character who hasn't yet been forced to compromise his morality? The relationship that pulls Ryder out into the world feels central to the emotional core of the book. How did you approach balancing that love story with the brutality of the setting? Without spoiling too much, how does the virus actually work on a thematic level? Is it purely biological, or is it also meant to represent something more psychological or societal? As Ryder encounters other survivors and “monster-killers,” how do you approach defining who the real monsters are in this world? Shifting to The Smart Division, the idea of an AI being involved in a “perfect murder” is chillingly plausible. What kind of real-world advancements in AI or predictive tech inspired this story? The pairing of a Gen-Z savant and a veteran FBI agent feels like a classic odd-couple dynamic. What makes that contrast especially interesting in a story about artificial intelligence and crime? Fun one: if you had to survive in the world of Only the Savage Are Left, what's your strategy in the first 24 hours… and are you making it out alive?

Opening hook / origin Chris, you've said that roadside coyote scene was the first thing you wrote, even before you knew the full story. What was it about that moment that felt like the right entry point into this world? 2. Tone and influences You're blending eco-horror and neo-noir in a really striking way here. What's each of your relationship to those genres—are there specific books or films that shaped how you approached them, or personal favorites that were on your mind while making this? 3. The prose chapter choice That opening prose chapter from Oilfield Graveyard: Tales of the Wildcatter Myth is such a bold structural swing. What does prose allow you to do that comics alone wouldn't, especially in setting up the mythology? 4. The Wildcatter as a presence The Wildcatter evolves from something almost abstract in issue #2 to something disturbingly human in issue #3. How did you approach revealing it piece by piece without losing the mystery? 5. Character and transformation The grandmother's descent is genuinely unsettling. How did you think about her transformation in relation to the oil itself, is it possession, corruption, or something more symbolic? 6. Visual storytelling and horror lineage Charlie, you spent years defining the visual language of long-form horror on The Walking Dead. When you approach a story like this, how does that experience inform your instincts—and where do you find yourself deliberately doing something different? 7. Pacing and silent storytelling Charlie, one thing that really stands out is how much space you're given for quiet, atmospheric sequences—scenes that breathe and flow without a lot of dialogue or overt plot movement. How do you approach pacing those moments visually so they still feel propulsive, and what do you think comics can do in those silent stretches that other mediums can't? 8. Fun / silly question: If the Wildcatter had a playlist, what's the one song that absolutely has to be on it?

Outside of Marvel, Paknadel has built a reputation in the indie space with acclaimed projects such as Arcadia, Friendo, and All Against All, often exploring themes of class, identity, and systemic power. Read transcriptThere are games that make you feel like a superhero, and then there are games that make you feel like you forgot to read the instructions, lost the instructions, and maybe the instructions never existed in the first place. Uncanny X-Men on the NES proudly lives in that second category. This week, we're taking a look at a game that technically features some of our favorites from Marvel's mutants, but in a way that raises a lot of questions. Mostly “why does it work like this?” and “who thought this was a good idea?” Along the way, we'll try to connect the dots back to the comics and see what actually made the jump from page to cartridge. Joining the show are frequent guest and actual real-life friend Adam Williamson, along with Miles Stokes from Jay and Miles X-Plain the X-Men, bringing the kind of X-Men knowledge and patience required to make sense of a game that absolutely refuses to explain itself. So grab a friend, a pile of comfort snacks, and a security blanket because everything you've heard about this game is probably true. I hope you survive the experience. Learn such things as: Who is that silent superstar that put together the character bios for the manual? Why do doors hate the X-Men so much? How does Jay & Miles X-Plain the X-Men play into the origin of Play Comics? And so much more! You can find Adam on BlueSky @effectnotaffect and absolutely nowhere else except for on Play Comics where he writes comic reviews and appears on other episodes. Of particular interest to listeners of this episode are The Gimmick #1 and The Job #1. You can find Miles over at @XPlaintheXmen on BlueSky or over at the official site for Jay and Miles X-Plain the X-Men. Read transcriptSome magical girl stories are content with sparkly transformations and heartfelt speeches. This is not one of those stories. This time on Play Comics we're warping through the glitter-strewn chaos of Sailor Moon: Another Story, the Super Famicom RPG that took the 90s manga and anime vibes, mashed them with branching timelines and turn-based redemption arcs, and asked, “What if destiny needed a save state?” It's console combat where emotional baggage weighs more than your inventory, and every villain monologue comes with a friendship discount. Chris isn't battling cosmic paradoxes solo though. Cass Proffitt from Distant Echoes jumps into the senshi squad to help unpack how this game balances moon crystal lore with JRPG grind, and whether it's a radiant tribute to Sailor Moon or just the sparkliest timeline meltdown in gaming history. Together they're digging into what survived the trip from Naoko Takeuchi's pages to console controllers, complete with overdramatic plot twists and Jupiter's undefeated punch stat. Dust off your brooch, queue the theme song, and prepare for senshi squad analysis laced with villain rehab debates and moon prism power-ups that hit different on pixelated screens. Learn such things as: Why Another Story might actually be canon. Sort of. Maybe. How localization shaped the Western Sailor Moon fandom. What the point of it all is if you don't even have a cat to help guide you along the way. And so much more! You can find Cass on their podcast Distant Echoes. If you want to be a guest on the show please check out the Be a A Guest on the Show page and let me know what you're interested in. You can read the full thoughts from CountZeroOr here: Why we never got them? Well, I'd probably say it's a combination of a couple factors: First, for much of the 16-bit console generation (and the 8-bit console generation before that), there was still a very considerable anti-Japan bias in terms of marketing of console games, based on the idea that American audiences wouldn't buy anything actively presented as being Japanese, so Anime presentations were out (this is part of the reason why the first Ranma 1/2 fighting game was changed into “Street Combat”) – the Golgo 13 games were viewed as something of an outlier. While some later titles in the 90s would take chances on presenting themselves as being more anime (i.e. Ranma 1/2 Hard Battle), they were also titles for properties generally marketed to guys, as also around this time video game marketing was increasingly getting more gendered, something that would continue throughout the 90s and into the 2000s and beyond. As a property targeted for girls, Sailor Moon didn't fit in the gender essentialist marketing plans of the video game industry. The fact that, since it's a RPG, it also has a ton of text to localize and translate (versus to the Sailor Moon beat-em-ups), certainly didn't help. The next episode is going to be Uncanny X-Men. That's right, we're taking another look at the NES game. What are your experiences with this one? If they remade it today what characters would you want included that weren't in the original? If you want to help support the show check out the Play Comics Patreon page or head over to the Support page if you want to go another route. You can also check out the Play Comics Merch Store. We're dropping into your feed a day early for this St. Patrick's Day episode, as we look ahead to the August debut of HBO Max's Lanterns and discuss the first appearances of Green Lanterns Alan Scott and Hal Jordan -- followed for no particular reason by a couple of Tales of the Green Lantern Corps written by Alan Moore! First, in "The Green Lantern!" from 1940's All-American Comics #16, construction engineer Alan Scott meets a talking lantern that used to be … a meteor in ancient China? It's a whole thing. Then, in "S.O.S. Green Lantern!" and "Secret of the Flaming Spear!" from 1959's Showcase #22, test pilot Hal Jordan is selected to succeed dying space cop Abin Sur and become an intergalactic lawman! Last but not least, Green Lantern Tomar Re explains to his colleague Arisia just why "Mogo Doesn't Socialize" in 1985's Green Lantern #188! And we get a glimpse into Abin Sur's final moments in "Tygers" from 1986's Tales of the Green Lantern Corps Annual #2! Will Alan Scott and Hal Jordan prevail in their strikingly similar first adventures? Will Bolphunga the Unrelenting ever find the mysterious Mogo? Why does Abin Sur need a spaceship when his ring has the power of flight? And can these stirring tales of heroic space patrolmen survive the Blackest Night and break on through to that Brightest Day known as … The Comics Canon? This week we have the extremely talented comic writer Alyssa Wong on the show to talk about their Psylocke, Deadpool and many, many other series. Lodro blows their mind by revealing that they have created over 97 characters for Marvel. We talk about their writing process, Shinobi Shaw hanging out in bathtubs, and a bonkers Shadow King issue that came out during their birth month and year, Uncanny X-Men 278. Also in this episode: - The Shadow King is big - Shinobi Shaw is a sh*tty f*ckboy with daddy issues - Don't bend your enemies to your will; it never goes well for you - Thieves should always dress in bright gold armor...so as to be inconspicuous - Rogue makes out with the Shadow King - Gambit versus Multiple Man = a great fight - Nightcrawler‘s sister girlfriend is back All this plus we ask a question of you, dear listener: What did Moira do in the bedroom that made Banshee turn into a prude? And what does any of this mean for Alyssa's future? Tune in to find out! Alyssa Wong writes award-winning fiction, comics, and games. Their work has won the Nebula, World Fantasy, Alfie, and Locus Awards, and been shortlisted for the Hugo, Bram Stoker, Shirley Jackson, and Campbell Awards. They are a story architect of Star Wars: The High Republic and co-authored the middle-grade novel Escape From Valo (2024). Alyssa's comics include Marvel's Psylocke, Deadpool, Alligator Loki, Captain Marvel, Iron Fist, and the GLAAD Award-winning Doctor Aphra Vol 2; Spirit World and Batman: Urban Legends; and titles for Dark Horse and IDW. Previously, Alyssa was a writer at Blizzard Entertainment, where they worked on Overwatch and Overwatch 2. They live in North Carolina and are online as @crashwong. Kurt Busiek and Mark Bagley's 1997 launch Thunderbolts had a killer high concept: what if a band of supervillains posed as heroes to con the public into trusting them? But by the end of issue #12, the central conflict and premise of the series had been effectively dismantled by exposing the team's deception and turning them into fugitives. Where could the series possibly go next? We investigate a narrative swerve that some fans thought was a mistake, but we'd argue took the series to new creative heights. Targeted by the good guys and the bad guys alike, the Thunderbolts go on the run, and Bagley and Busiek turn what could have been a limited premise into a true ongoing series in the tradition of Claremont and Byrne's Uncanny X-Men, constantly shifting the status quo and packing each monthly issue with intrigue and subplots. Plus: Jim and Justin explain why Hawkeye is one of the coolest Avengers ever as he takes the reins of the team.Discussed in this episode: Thunderbolts #13-33, #0Baron Zemo says, "Under no circumstances should you support this podcast at patreon.com/ironageofcomics!" But are you gonna let that guy tell you what you can and can't do??

Welcome true believers to X-Men Horoscopes where each week our host Lodro Rinzler is in conversation with a special guest to discuss the X-Men issue that aligns with a significant month and year from their life and what that issue reveals about their future. This week on the show we have cosplay couple Aly Moon and Nick Woody to discuss their anniversary issue, a Gail Simone jam (Uncanny X-Men 18) where the well-intentioned mutant "Friendship Festival" goes sideways...and what that means for the future of their relationship. We play the X-Newlywed Game (how could we not?) and also on this episode: Wolverine throws up on Ferris wheels Horse Girl has a bad night Nightcrawler has a nice day The most on fire hospital Jubilee needs a better publicist What does any of this mean for their future as a soon-to-be married couple? Tune in to find out! Aly Moon (@Alymoonnn) is a Tennessee-based cosplayer, nail artist, lifelong Marvel nerd, and proud X-Men enthusiast. When she's not bringing superheroes to life through cosplay or creating nerdy nail art, she's probably found in her garden (because every good mutant needs a soft, earthy side too). Nicholas Woody, also known as TheComicCosplayer, is an extremely passionate cosplayer who loves bringing characters to life. Nightcrawler, Sentry, Ash Williams, and Mister Miracle are just a few examples of his portrayals. From horror movies like Evil Dead and The Shining, to comics such as Moon Knight, the new Marvel Ultimate Comics, and DC Black Label/Vertigo, and even gaming titles like Marvel Rivals and Dead by Daylight, to fandom-related content creation, Nicholas has fully embraced the geek lifestyle. When he's not traveling, creating, gaming, or thrifting, Nicholas enjoys the convention scene! Once a theater kid, always a theater kid—Nick's love for cosplay evolved from his love for acting and theater. Cosplay allows you to be whoever you want to be rather than hoping to play the role you want, which really drew him to the hobby. Formerly based in Texas, and now residing in central Tennessee, Nicholas looks forward to a bright future with his fiancé Aly as they share their passions together in geekdom. They say when man makes a plan, God laughs. His particular laughter this week was getting the site we normally record our podcast on banned on my work computer. So we scrambled and we have before you the result of minutes of furious googling, but these are the things we do for you, our dear listeners, nay, our dear friends. If there is praise, we will gladly take it. If there is criticism, well that is the fault of the school system.
