Episode 78: Managing Scars Through Surgical Techniques at PRMA

DiepCJourney Podcast

We are going to discuss the topic of scars and cover several topics related to scars on this edition of the DiepCJourney podcast. It is understood, anyone who has surgery will have scars of some kind. There is a mechanism to how scars heal. In plastic surgery, if you think of the Greek word, plastikós (πλᾰστῐκός it means to shape or mold. Scars are a significant consideration in plastic surgery then. I invited an expert in the field to share his expertise on the topic. My guest is Dr. Andrew Gassman joined PRMA in San Antonio, Texas in 2021. Dr. Gassman completed his plastic and reconstructive surgery residency at UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine in Los Angeles, California, and a general surgery residency, as Chief of Surgical Resident Education, at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood Illinois. Following his residency, Dr. Gassman completed his fellowship in breast and reconstructive microsurgery, with a specialty in facial reanimation at UTSW Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in Dallas, Texas. Dr. Gassman and his team practice the co-surgeon model in breast reconstruction, meaning each patient undergoing autologous breast reconstruction will have two board-certified microsurgeons in the OR at the time of their reconstruction. They are part of the IFAR (Institute for Advanced Reconstruction) network collaborating with other microsurgeons in the IFAR network to improve patient safety, care, and outcomes. Dr. Gassman discusses the importance of scars and the considerations for plastic surgeons regarding scars for their patients. He tells us, “These are marks that a patient is going to carry with them for their lives.” He tells us about techniques used at his practice and considerations like: ·       Scar placement ·       Scar healing ·       Different types of scars and skin types ·       Scar management after surgery ·       Scar revisions at phase 2 ·       Emotional impact of scars We reference a DiepCJourney podcast in our discussion you can listen to here: Ep. 60: Credibility in the Noise _ Social Media, Breast Reconstruction, and Your Experience. In this heartfelt episode, Pastor Jack Young sits down with Rob Gassman to reflect on their shared experiences growing up in an Independent Fundamental Baptist (IFB) context. Together, they discuss the challenges and blessings of a strict religious upbringing, and how—despite potential for rebellion—they each came to a genuine, personal faith in Jesus Christ. This honest conversation explores grace, true conversion, and the importance of owning your faith, no matter your background. Whether you were raised in church or are coming to faith from a different path, this episode will encourage and challenge you to consider what it means to truly follow Christ.

In the conclusion of our "Summer Abroad" world cinema series, comedian and writer Sean O'Connor (Solar Opposites, Norm Macdonald Live) returns to discuss the 1962 Italian road comedy IL SORPASSO starring Vittorio Gassman and Jean-Louis Trintignant. Dino Risi directed this primo example of commedia all'italiana, a genre of socially astute, highly successful comedies that coincided with Italy's economic boom of the 1960s. Gassman gives an indelible performance as Bruno, a smooth-talking alpha male who manhandles a mild-mannered stranger, Roberto (Trintignant) into having the best day of his life. Hitch a ride with our discussion of IL SORPASSO, with a few pit stop diversions into Al Pacino, Austin Butler, Letterboxd, Bottoms, Ava DuVernay, Willy Wonka, the "art of the steal" and much, much more! Gun   Four Gwinnett County lawmakers, all Democrats, are urging Georgia Governor Brian Kemp to call a special session of the Georgia General Assembly to address gun violence. The call for a special session comes after recent mass shootings in Atlanta, Georgia, and Moultrie, Georgia, and a mall in Texas. The lawmakers wrote in a letter that gun violence has become a public safety crisis and that it is time for the General Assembly to address the issue. They requested the governor immediately call the session to discuss firearm-related public safety. The Georgia House Democratic Caucus announced legislators will hold a press conference on Wednesday morning to reiterate the call for a special session.    STORY 2:  Arrest   A juvenile has been arrested by Snellville police in connection with a shooting that occurred near South Gwinnett High School last week. The suspect has been charged with aggravated assault, but their name has not been released because they are a minor. The shooting took place during an alleged drug deal, and an 18-year-old was shot in the leg. As a result, nearby schools, including South Gwinnett High School, went on a soft lockdown for a few hours. Law enforcement has not provided any additional information about the case due to the ongoing prosecution.    Story 3: GGC   Dr. Jann Joseph, the President of Georgia Gwinnett College, recently discussed the state of the college in an interview with the Gwinnett Daily Post. She spoke about the importance of the upcoming Convocation Center, the school's relationship with Lawrenceville, and the possibility of adding more sports teams. Dr. Joseph emphasized the need to establish the college within the community and to communicate its success to the public. She also discussed the strong bond between the college and the city of Lawrenceville and the significance of the recently named Grizzly Parkway, which connects GGC to the city. The man allegedly used the victim's credit cards to purchase a sandwich and other items from an American Deli, as well as at a gas station and Walmart. Surveillance footage from the American Deli showed the suspect to be a slim-built Black male wearing a white hoody and black or blue gym shorts. Anyone with information regarding the case is urged to contact detectives or Atlanta Crime Stoppers, where tipsters can remain anonymous and may receive a cash reward.   Story 5: Lights   Gwinnett County and the Sugarloaf Community Improvement District will partner to upgrade the lighting system under the Interstate 85 bridge at Sugarloaf Parkway. The current incandescent lighting system, installed in 1997, will be replaced with energy-efficient LED lighting. The project is expected to cost $195,000, with the county contributing $165,000 from 2017 special purpose local option sales tax funds and the Sugarloaf CID contributing the remaining $30,000. The upgrade is aimed at improving lighting and energy efficiency for drivers passing under the bridge.   Commercial: Lawrenceville -Ingles 2   “Here's Leah McGrath with Ingles Markets joining me to talk meat allergies:”   Leah piece   “Back with more in a moment”   Commercial:  GCPS connect   Story 6: Bones   The Gwinnett Medical Examiner's Office and DNA testing laboratory Othram Inc. are working together to solve a 25-year-old mystery surrounding two sets of bones, believed to belong to a teenager and an infant, found in Norcross. The bones were found in boxes at the intersection of Buford Highway and Weaver Way in 1998. Officials hope genealogical testing will provide answers to the identity of the children and how they died. The bones were exhumed legally from south Georgia, but it is not known where they were being transported. The tools found with the remains indicate the children likely died between 1900 and 1940.   Story 7: Wrestling   Jim Gassman has been approved as the new varsity wrestling coach at Jackson County High School in Georgia, USA. He will replace current coach Jason Powers who will be stepping away from the program. Gassman is currently the head wrestling coach at Mountain View High School and has coached 45 wrestlers who have become state placers and six who have won state championships. Today's guest is author Samantha Gassman, and we have the distinct privilege of discussing her apparently extreme versatility as an artist, encompassing not only her three VERY different published or acquired works, but additionally her military background, her motherhood, her singing ability, and her impeccable rhyme sense. I'll leave her other two books to be discussed in our chat, but did want to introduce DEAR RAINBOW BABY, published as her commercial picture book debut this year. This book is deeply personal to Sam, as you might imagine given the subject matter of miscarriage, pregnancy loss, and the ways families rebound. It's a beautiful book and a touching way to introduce one of the most difficult topics imaginable to a child. All this is to say that the conversation Brenna and I had with Sam is a real journey as we reconcile and connect the tissue between her nonfiction, her early 2022 debut on the educational market, her publication of DEAR RAINBOW BABY, and Artichoke-y Karaoke, which you'll have to wait til the end of the episode to hear about and is WELL worth the wait for the introduction of our new occasional segment called the Dead Manuscripts Society. And as I'm writing this I realize for the first time that I never got the proper spelling of Artichoke-y. Long-time listeners of this show know the importance I see in the intersection of food, health, and faith. The fact of the matter is a lot of people of faith struggle with food choices and stress. I hope today's conversation will inspire you to get to a place where stress is no longer causing health issues by relying on God's guidance.   About Bob Gassman, RDN Bob Gassman is a Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist, minister, and author. He integrates his diverse background with a passion to connect people directly to God. Bob also is the Founder and President of The God Place, Inc., a non-profit ministry. Bob and his wife Kim have been married for more than 40 years and live in Tucson, Arizona.   The Link Between Nutrition and Faith In this episode, Bob and I discuss how nutrition and spirituality go hand in hand when approaching how we recover from stress. When people focus exclusively on their diet, they leave out an important element.  Faith provides a source of guidance outside of ourselves. With it, we can make progress without needing to have all the answers. We just need to remain confident that God will guide us to where we need to be on our journeys to health and wellbeing. So when you feel stress, Bob wants you to see it as a signal to look for answers with God.   Using God's Foods to Build Resistance to Stress Bob explains how using whole foods, that were designed by God to fuel the body, to make it more resistant to stress. Understanding how this food is God's gift gives us an appreciation for just how involved in our lives He is. Bob has seen how acknowledging this will better allow us to recognize the connection between faith and health. We agree that, overall, the best steps to take involve self-reflection. If people can examine their lives with God's guidance and without shame, they can start making healthy and spiritually informed choices. When this is done without guilt and negativity, it becomes very empowering. Where do you see your faith and health intersect? For the complete transcription please visit https://michaelhingson.com/podcast About Our Guests: John and Larry Gassman are identical twins born on January 2, 1955. Both are blind due to being given too much oxygen after being born more than two and a half months premature. At birth Larry weighed 1 pound ten ounces and John weighed 1 pound eight ounces. Larry's late wife Melinda referred to them when describing how little they were to her nieces as “About the size of a Macho Burrito.   The Gassman twins were fortunate that their parents did not totally buy into the myth that blind children could not grow up and thrive in the world. Thus both boys were given the opportunity to explore and grow just like other kids.   After completing their scholastic educations both twins secured employment. After a stint teaching Braille at the Braille Institute of America in Los Angeles John joined the Walt Disney Travel Company working in reservations as well as testing updates and changes in the reservations systems to insure that the software remains accessible.   Larry Joined Marriott in 2,000 also becoming involved in reservations. Larry trained many other blind persons to use the Marriott programs. He also tested new applications to insure accessibility for blind employees.   The Gassmans have been collectors of “old time radio shows” since the early 1970s. The began hosting their own program in 1973. Today you can hear them regularly on the internet radio station, Yesterday USA, www.Yesterdayusa.com. In addition to hosting programs they are both part of the behind the scenes directors of Yesterday USA.   Talking about being busy and active, they both are very active, as Larry says, “Barbershoppers”. They have sung in various quartets as well as participating in various conventions and helping to run barbershop chapters in Orange County. The Cancering Show
Managing Your Cancer Risk with Dr. Natalie Gassman

The Cancering Show

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 28, 2021 32:58

On this episode, Dr. Jennifer Young Pierce has a very important conversation about cancer risk and prevention with cancer researcher Natalie Gassman, Ph.D. Gassman explains how long-term exposure to the sun, e-cigarettes, common chemicals and BPAs can transform our DNA at the cellular level, possibly causing cancer. Plus, they discuss the small and practical everyday decisions that can minimize our risk of getting cancer. Key Takeaways - Exposure to the sun, BPAs and other environmental elements can alter our DNA at the cellular level. - When our DNA is altered enough to lose its integrity and function, it transforms our cells into a pre-cancerous or cancerous state. - Age is a crucial component for cancer risk because of the compounding effect of DNA damage. - Awareness and limited exposure to toxic chemicals and environmental factors can minimize and control your cancer risk. - Moderation and introducing small healthy behavioral changes are your best defense for cancer prevention and a long-term healthy lifestyle. Natalie Gassman Said: We are exposed to the environment through the air we breathe, through the foods we ingest and through the water we drink. We also are passively exposed through our skin, which is our largest organ. Those are things that can impact our health and well-being. You can balance having the lifestyle you want using convenience products as long as you balance it with other things in your life that create a healthy lifestyle like exercise and antioxidants in your diet. If you can introduce moderate changes such as slow food a couple of days a week, sunscreen on your face every single morning, and then remember to reapply as your motto, then you're going to build a healthy lifestyle and healthy habits. Moderation is your best defense for cancer prevention and long-term well-being. ////// Never Miss an EpisodePlease subscribe to The Cancering Show Want us to deliver The Cancering Show to your email inbox?
