“Wise up, folks. We're all alone out there and tomorrow we're going out there again.”Talking About The Big Chill with our guest, writer/director Mandy FabianIn this episode of Movies We Like, hosts Andy Nelson and Pete Wright are joined by the multi-talented writer/director Mandy Fabian to discuss her fascinating career journey and the classic 1980s ensemble dramedy, The Big Chill. From her early days as a clown and sketch comedian to her path to becoming a filmmaker, Mandy shares the twists and turns that led her to direct her first feature film, Jess Plus None.Throughout the conversation, Mandy provides insights into the challenges and joys of indie filmmaking, from the financial risks and creative compromises to the importance of assembling a supportive team and maintaining a sense of fun amidst the pressure. She also delves into the unique challenges of shooting Jess Plus None, with 90% of the film set outdoors, and how this serendipitously worked in her favor during the COVID-19 pandemic. The discussion of The Big Chill, Lawrence Kasdan's seminal film about a group of college friends reuniting after the death of one of their own, touches on the movie's enduring themes of nostalgia, friendship, and the passage of time. Mandy and the hosts explore how the film's iconic soundtrack and stellar ensemble cast, including Kevin Kline, Glenn Close, and William Hurt, contribute to its status as a cinematic touchstone. With Mandy Fabian's infectious enthusiasm and Andy and Pete's insightful commentary, this episode offers a delightful deep dive into the world of filmmaking and the lasting impact of The Big Chill. It's a must-listen for anyone interested in the creative process behind the camera or the power of a well-crafted ensemble piece to resonate with audiences decades after its release.About Mandy Mandy Fabian began her career in Austin, Texas as the youngest member of a professional sketch comedy troupe before attending Vassar College to major in film. As a filmmaker, Carolina focuses on work that is in tune with the current political climate. The things that have happened in Brazil recently have been unimaginable to the filmmaker in many ways.  Brazil is a very conservative and homophobic society, where a minister of human rights, now a senator, stated that kids shouldn't play with Frozen dolls because the character of Elsa was a lesbian. In the film TOLL, the main character, a toll booth attendant, realizes she can use her job to raise some extra money illegally. But this is only for a so-called noble cause: to send her son to an expensive gay conversion workshop led by a renowned foreign priest. The film is is a drama permeated with dark, irreverent humor.  We talk to Carolina today, along with film star Maeve Jinkings, about the film. She has written and directed 6 short films, which were selected for more than 300 festivals and the recipients of many awards.  The Orphan , her most recognized film, premiered in Cannes Director's Fortnight in 2018 and won the Queer Palm. Told through individual stories with families, and grief experts, the documentary explores how we can normalize grief in our society and actively help others to process the pain of losing a loved one. Actor-author Anthony Rapp (Broadway's RENT, StarTrek: Discovery), author and grief expert David Kessler (Finding Meaning, ABC Good Morning America contributor) and actor John Farley ( the brother of late comedian Chris Farley), will attend the world premiere on Sun July 2 @ 12:15 PM to share their experiences dealing with grief, both personally and collectively, in a country reeling from multiple tragic events in recent years. “Meet Me Where I Am” is directed by Grant Garry and produced by Stacy Roque, Lisa Kauls and Sharolyn Schmiederer. James Slaven, Director of Photography, worked with Garry for the duration of production, collaborating on their worldwide tour of interviews for the film, The 86 minute documentary also features a mixture of families, counselors, grief advocates and experts including Ron Marasco, Julie Shaw, Cynthia O'Neal, Donna Schuurman, Jana DeCristofaro, Lisa Kauls, Mike Reynolds, Ken Ithiphol, Alicia Forneret, Julisa Golden, and Natalie Kazarian. Director Garry has always been curious about grief, from his first experience when his grandmother died when he was a teenager to his most recent loss, the death of his uncle. "Meet Me Where I Am" is the culmination of that curiosity, and a dedication to ensuring we all feel better equipped to talk about grief. “After being contacted by our film's executive producer, Lisa Kauls, and hearing her story, I knew her grief and others' grief must be witnessed. I was honored to sit down with some of the world's most renowned grief experts as well as individuals with lived experiences. The rare opportunity this film provides is that the expert talkers also have unique experiences of grief themselves, “ says Garry. more: getthefunkoutshow.kuci.org

South Minneapolis playwright and poet William Nour recommends “Returning to Haifa” by Pangea World Theater. This is a U.S. premiere of a play based on a novella by Palestinian author Ghassan Kanafani. The play tells of a Palestinian couple who return to Haifa after the 1967 war to find the baby they left behind in 1948. They find a Jewish family of Holocaust survivors living in their old home. “It's my reality,” Nour says. “I came here when I was 16. Basically, because there were no opportunities for Arabs in Israel, like as second-class citizens. So it's very poignant for me and it's just — I cried when I saw it for the first time.”  “Returning to Haifa” plays through May 6 at the Mixed Blood Theatre in Minneapolis. Eric Heukeshoven is the director of Worship, Music and Arts for Central Lutheran Church in Winona, Minn. He says he's “really excited” to attend “Portraits,” the spring concert for the Winona Symphony. The piece that he's most looking forward to is called “Peanuts Gallery.” American composer Ellen Taaffe Zwilich wrote it, inspired by the characters of the comic strip “Peanuts” by Charles M. Schulz. “I grew up with ‘Peanuts,'” Heukeshoven says, “and it's for piano and orchestra and it's just delightful.” The performance is Saturday at Wesley United Methodist Church in Winona. Holly Harrison is a freelance writer and a creative located in south Minneapolis, and she recently attended a performance of “Othello: The Remix” by Minneapolis Musical Theatre. “Unlike most tributes to Shakespeare, this one kind of tosses out all of the 17th-century dialogue,” Harrison says, “and rebuilds it as a hip-hop musical. Instead of taking place among Venetian military and political figures, it follows a hop-hop crew that's going on tour.” Harrison adds that “you really get to know your fellow audience members a little bit by seeing which references really crack them up and which ones slip past them.”  “Othello: The Remix” plays through May 7 at Phoenix Theater in Minneapolis.

The year is officially started people with HBO's kick-off to their 2023 slate, as well as one of the most anticipated adaptations of the last few years with "The Last of Us." Based off the extremely popular Naughty Dog Video Game released in 2013, an film adaptation floundered in development hell before HBO finally got the rights to the game. The series was announced in 2020 from game creator Neil Druckman, with "Chernobyl" producers and creators Johann Renck & Craig Maizin producing and directing the pilot episode. Cast in the iconic roles of Joel & Ellie are both former Game of Thrones stars Pedro Pascal & Bella Ramsey, alongside a supporting cast that includes the likes of Anna Torv, Nick Offerman, Murray Bartlet, Gabriel Luna & Nico Parker. The premiere covers roughly the first opening minutes of the gameplay, and has been received very well by the critics and the fanbase alike. Dom is joined once again by Eli to break down everything the premiere has going for it, where it's going in the future and more! Documentarian Kim Bartley and Star, Sharmaine Weed Discuss Pure Grit Making its U.S. Premiere at Newport Beach Film Festival on Sunday, October 24th, 3:15 PM at South Coast Village. Pure Grit makes its U.S. Premiere at Newport Beach Film Festival and we were lucky enough to speak with Irish documentarian, Kim Bartley and the star of the film, Sharmaine Weed. Weed is a Bareback Horse Racing Champion from the Wind River reservation in Northern Wyoming and is enrolled in the Northern Arapaho and Eastern Shoshone tribes. Weed had grown up suffering abuse and self-medicated when no one believed her stories, claiming they were false accusations that turned out to be 100 percent true, taking the witness stand for 6-hours against her abuser --- alone. Pure Grit is a powerful documentary that transcends genres. It is not an LGBTQ+ documentary. It is not a Native American/First Nations documentary. It is not a Sports documentary. Pure Grit is a Human Condition documentary that tells the story of an abuse survivor, who came over self-destructive behavior to become a world champion and that is the most important part in Sharmaine Weed's story. Pure Grit makes its U.S. Premiere at Newport Beach Film Festival on October 24, 2021 at 3:15 PM at South Coast Village. To purchase tickets visit Pure Grit visit nbff2021.eventive.org. Hailed by the New York Times for her “attractive soprano voice,” and for having “total control of the stage,” (Broadway World) coloratura soprano Meghan Picerno currently stars as Christine Daae in The Phantom of the Opera on Broadway. In 2017 Meghan collaborated with legendary director Hal Prince as Cunegonde in his production of Candide at the New York City Opera. She quickly became one of the most sought-after Cunegondes in the world and reprised the role at San Francisco Symphony, Princeton Symphony, and the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona. Meghan next took on the role of Christine Daae in the US Premiere and 1st National Tour of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Love Never Dies. She has represented Andrew Looyd Webber’s body of work by special invitation in performances on the ITV Television broadcast of the Classic BRIT Awards in 2018, making her Royal Albert Hall debut with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and a guest appearance on the Live at Chelsea Concert Series honoring his 70th birthday. After Love Never Dies, Meghan joined The Phantom of the Opera family as Christine on the World Tour, premiering the iconic piece in Tel Aviv, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines. This past fall she made her Broadway debut as leading lady, Christine Daae, in The Phantom of the Opera, and was hailed as one the Top Broadway replacements of 2019 by BroadwayBox. Like many people during COVID-19, Meghan is back home spending time with her parents. In this episode she shares how she dealt with the initial blow when Broadway was shut down - finding herself in a bit of an identity crisis not being able perform and sing, the one she thing she loves more than anything else in the world. She talks candidly about coming out the other side, and feeling now like she is awake again - “it’s kind of magical,” she shares. Meghan also takes us on the whirlwind journey that began by meeting Hal Prince and landing a leading role in Candide, to touring with Love Never Dies and Phantom of the Opera as Christine, to making her Broadway debut in The Phantom of the Opera this past fall. Until the curtains on Broadway rise again, she is finding time to give back and help people, “one part of theater” she really loves, by hosting workshops, master classes, and private voice lessons, and getting inspired by her students. You have no doubt seen Melanie Paxson on your TV hundreds if not thousands of times over the last two decades. Most of you will recognize her right away as the "Glad Girl". She captured our hearts and made us want to use better food storage and trash bags when she starred in several commercials for Gladware.  My favorite commercial she starred in was for Red Robin. Seriously, their burgers are bomb! In addition to being a prolific commercial actress, Melanie has a lengthy list of TV credits as well. She starred in "Cupid," "Happy Family," and all three "Descendants" movies. And I also have a favorite show she's been in: "Notes From the Underbelly." That's where I got my final SAG voucher to join the union. I was not only a fan of that show, but it some small way, it helped get my professional acting career started. So as you can imagine I was thrilled Melanie agreed to come on my show. We immediately jumped into how much we love being moms. As in-demand as she is, she is prioritizing her children and focusing on family. She has a 9-year-old son and a recently welcomed a baby girl as well. We talked about why there was a nine year gap between kids and how fleeting fertility can be. She has an incredibly fertility story to tell, but she isn't quite ready to share that yet. Melanie hopes to write it down and share it when she feels ready. For now we talk about the struggles of prioritizing family in an industry that feels so demanding. It feels as if you take a moment off, opportunities will pass you by. But in reality, there will always be opportunity to work, audition and create. We also give ourselves permission to spend time with our kids. I love taking Chan to piano class, soccer practice and picking her up after school. It's the one part of my day that has the least amount of pressure and stress and brings me immense joy. Actress Melanie Paxon poses on arrival for the US Premiere of the film 'Saving Mr. Banks' at the Walt Disney Studios in Burbank, California, on December 9, 2013. Excited to be back this week to help kick off year three of One Movie Punch, where I will continue holding down the fort each Friday bringing you the most interesting films from Austin’s Fantastic Fest. It’s been a fun last few weeks in the world of Film Twitter, seeing critics and friends of all backgrounds post not only their top 10 lists for 2019, but for the decade as well. With no conscious effort, I ended up with four Fantastic Fest films on both my best-of-year and best-of-decade lists. My 2019 favorites included PARASITE (Episode #628), JOJO RABBIT (Episode #631), KNIVES OUT (Episode #652), and a film called THE DEATH OF DICK LONG, which is flying far below the radar, and I can’t wait to present it on a future episode. My decade list includes RAW (Episode #517), IT FOLLOWS (Episode #608), ANNA AND THE APOCALYPSE (Episode #425), and the aforementioned PARASITE. 15 years in, Fantastic Fest has film selection down to a science. I’m coming out of the gate with a weird one today, so let’s get to it. Today’s movie is IN FABRIC, the off-beat 2018 horror film written and directed by Peter Strickland. IN FABRIC made its US Premiere at the 2018 Fantastic Fest, more than a year before A24 finally released it in theaters and on VOD back in December. Marianne Jean-Baptiste stars as Sheila Woodchapel, a divorcee residing in a small flat with her young adult son. Sheila works accounting for a couple of thankless bosses, while putting up with a son and his girlfriend who show her little respect. Sheila’s attempts to get back into the dating world result in blind dates with peculiar men that would be over in seconds were Sheila not so polite and perhaps growing a bit lonely. To impress one potential suitor, Sheila visits a haute couture department store where she’s drawn to a bold red dress that’s beyond her sensibilities and even further beyond her budget. Enthralled by the store’s clerk Miss Luckmoore, Sheila purchases the dress, leading to a series of bizarre and tragic events. Right out of the gate, I’ll say this film is not for everyone. The trailer makes it look like a late-70s arthouse film that just went through the restoration process. In actuality, it’s a clear homage to the atmospheric slasher giallo films of that era, a horror subgenre that’s been getting a few new entries of late, notably the SUSPIRIA remake (Episode #418) and KNIFE + HEART (Episode #542). Critics tend to be mostly positive on these films, appreciating the dated color palette and unique, often unconventional narratives. General audiences seeking a more straightforward storyline with a fast-paced three-act structure may sour a bit on these films that often cross over into pretentiousness. In the case of IN FABRIC, the Rotten Tomatoes scores show more than 90% of critics gave it a favorable review, but it sits at just 50% for the audience score. If you’re not in the mood for something off-beat or are turned off by the aesthetic in the trailer, you may want to bow out now. Still with me? What I loved about this film is that the protagonist does not conform to the normal horror archetype. Sheila is a middle-aged black woman with few friends in spite of her pleasant demeanor, living a life where her bosses and her son are dismissive and condescending to an almost absurd degree. Jean-Baptiste is fantastic in the role with a grounded performance that anchors her character in the real world while sinister forces at the department store begin to conspire. The audience roots for this demure woman to try on the empowering deep red gown, knowing full well that it will bring with it some dangerous stakes for Sheila or those around her. The film takes a full hour fleshing out the characters and (I guess) building a bit of a story. It’s never really clear what the film is driving towards, which, given that this is a giallo, is actually more of a feature than a bug. However, when the story makes an abrupt (not to mention sharp) change of direction as it rolls into the final act, I was thrown for a bit of a loop. To the film’s detriment, it feels a bit like I didn’t get the full story that I wanted to see. What makes IN FABRIC fantastic?Even though I could not stay on board with the story (it felt a bit like SUSPIRIA-light), the style kept me visually engaged throughout. When fashion plays a central role in your picture, you had better build a world that’s stylish, and director Strickland certainly takes a swing here. His two prior films were BERBERIAN SOUND STUDIO, a giallo set in an Italian recording studio, and THE DUKE OF BURGUNDY, an intimate tale of butterfly collecting set against the backdrop of a dominant-submissive lesbian relationship. I have enjoyed all three films, with their hallmarks of critical success and box office poison, and hope this one leads to a larger audience for his next picture. IN FABRIC is a darkly comedic suspense film, light on horror, but heavy on intrigue. Fans of off-beat modern horror films with a retro feel, such as THE LOVE WITCH or A GIRL WALKS HOME ALONE AT NIGHT will enjoy this film. Rotten Tomatoes: 94% (CERTIFIED FRESH) Metacritic: 83 (MUST SEE) One Movie Punch: 6.6/10 IN FABRIC (2018) is rated R and available on VOD. Be sure to follow One Movie Punch on Twitter and we’ll let you know when IN FABRIC and any other films we cover hit streaming services. I’m pulling my first double-header this week, so come back tomorrow for my review of 1917, which just opened in theaters nationwide. Sam Mendes’ World War I tale is presented as a single take following two young infantryman through the trenches. Let’s see if he can pull off this technical marvel and if the film can rise above its filmmaking gimmick. See you then.

Beth B exploded onto the New York film scene in the late ‘70s, after receiving her BFA from the School of Visual Arts in 1977. These breakthrough films, such as Black Box, Vortex, and The Offenders (co-directed with Scott B), were shown at Max’s Kansas City, CBGB’s, the New York Film Festival and the Film Forum. These and more recent films have been shown at, and acquired by, the Whitney Museum and MoMA. Her early films, along with those of Jim Jarmusch and Amos Poe, were the focus of the documentary film, Blank City. Her films have been the subjects of several books and other documentaries, including The Cinema of Transgression; Art, Performance, Media; and No Wave: Underground 80; Downtown Film and TV Culture. Beth B’s career has been characterized by work that challenges society’s conventions, and that focuses on social issues and human rights. Throughout her prolific career, Beth B has produced over 30 films within the documentary, experimental, and narrative genres. B worked in television as an Executive Producer, Producer, and Director for eight years. She has mounted largescale media installations for the Hayward Gallery and the Wexner Center, and created a theater production for BAM’s Artist in Action series. Her films have been shown at museums and cinemas worldwide as well as film festivals including: The New York Film Festival, Sundance Film Festival, Berlin Film Festival, Toronto Film Festival, Nuremberg Int’l Human Rights Film Festival, DOC NYC Film Festival, Locarno Film Festival and many others. Currently, Beth B is directing and producing the feature length documentary film, LYDIA LUNCH: The War is Never Over, about iconic musician and performance artist, Lydia Lunch. In 2016, B released her feature documentary film, Call Her Applebroog, with Zeitgeist Films as distributor. The film had its world premiere at The Museum of Modern Art at Doc Fortnight and opened at the Metrograph Theater in NYC as well as other theatrical venues. The film reveals renowned artist Ida Applebroog’s groundbreaking artwork that has been a sustained enquiry into the polemics of human relations, but more intimately, it is about her dramatic struggle to overcome adversity. Her personal story is one that Beth B knows well—Ida is her mother and colleague. In February 2017, B mounted a new interdisciplinary exhibition, VOYEUR, at the HOWL! Gallery in New York City. The show combines video installation, photographs, and a large-scale sculpture. In 2013, B produced, directed, filmed and edited EXPOSED, a documentary feature film about 8 New York performance artists who use their bodies in provocative and comedic ways to question the very concept of “normal.” The film premiered in the Panorama section at the 2013 Berlin Film Festival where it was nominated for Best Documentary Film and has been screened in over 30 countries. From 2000-2008, Beth B began a new phase of her career, producing and directing television and educational documentaries and docudramas, which she continues to do. Breathe In, Breathe Out, a co-production with Open City/Blow Up, Dune and ZDF Television, had its world premiere at the Rotterdam Film Festival, its US Premiere at the Toronto Film Festival, and was subsequently broadcast in several countries. B has a prolific career producing and directing television documentaries including Positive ID: The Case Files of Anthony Falsetti; Death of a Rising Star; The Black Widow; An Unlikely Terrorist; and several other programs. B worked as Senior Series Producer on a six-part reality television series, Crime Scenes Uncovered, about the “real CSI” shot in Miami for TLC. She produced and directed two of the episodes. For ZDF/Germany, ARTE/France, the Sundance Channel and PBS, she has created various short subject documentaries, including Breasts for PBS's Egg the Arts Show, segments for Nerve for the HBO series and website; High Heel Nights for ARTE/France, and segments for AfterEffects, the Sundance Channel series.

A Documentary about Great Women at a Festival Highlighting Exceptional Women From Innesse Blohina, the acclaimed director of the award winning documentary about surfing ON THE WAVE (with Kelly Slater), comes her second film which examines nine extraordinary women from the four corners of the globe who share one thing in common: a profound love for the Sea. A love so profound that they have chosen to make the Ocean the center of their physical, philosophical and professional lives. SHE IS THE OCEAN will screen on Saturday, October 13that 6PM, at Regal Cinema at LA Live, 1000 W. Olympic Blvd., Los Angeles. In a unique documentary concept, the director has selected these women, ranging from the ages of twelve to eighty three, in order to create a portrait of what could be a metaphor for one woman’s Ocean life through all her ages. Starting with three women who engage in the thrill of ocean sports, to a famed scientist who plunges into the deepest depths on the edge of human survival, to a cliff diver who is hailed as “The bravest woman in Germany”, She is the Oceancaptures the common thread that bonds them together. Both how it has formed their lives and given them meaning beyond the normal constraints of society. Mankind has always referred to the Ocean as a She. Even the boats that sail upon her waters are considered to possess female energy. Could this be mankind’s greatest homage to the female gender? That these Oceans of ours, which contain the most powerful forces on the planet, the most boundless mysteries, the progenitor of all life on earth, the vessel of our planet’s most infinite and valuable bounty, will forever be related to the same noble attributes of a woman? The attributes of mystery and power which has kept mankind enthralled from time immemorial? She is the Ocean will explore these thoughts and more. And, in the very words of the women who lead these extraordinary lives, seeks to discover the answers.
