Episode 171 of The Adventure Podcast features journalist, writer and climber, Andrew Bisharat. Much of Andrew's career has been focussed on writing about climbing, mountains and adventure. He is a leader in adventure journalism. Andrew is of Palestinian heritage, and was the subject of the film 'Resistance Climbing', which documented his first visit to Palestine in 2020 and a local climbing programme there. The focus of this episode is Palestine, and it's not a bright and breezy episode. It's raw, it's real and it's personal. This conversation purposefully does not shy away from the reality of things. We hope you can enjoy it in some way, that it teaches you something, and that it gives you a personal insight into the conflict, the people, and the place. At the time this episode is released, 'Resistance Climbing' is free to watch on Reel Rock's website: https://watch.reelrocktour.com/videos/rr17-resistanceclimbing.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-adventure-podcast. After a weekend day in the high alpine, where puffies, a biting wind, and turning leaves teased of winter, we're more in tune with the season—which is ski film season. The socials are beginning to buzz with the sending as production houses ramp up the visual and auditory volume. Now. Is. The. Time. To. Get. Stoked. With that in mind, we took a small detour to visit one of the best in the climbing/adventure film business, Nick Rosen of the Reel Rock Tour and Sender Films. Rosen and his colleagues reliably shoot, edit, and produce often tense, funny, and heavy films with crisp storytelling and vertigo-inducing visuals. If you are intrigued and new to the Sender Films' catalog, "The Alpinist," an Emmy Award winning film, is a beautiful place to begin your journey. On this podcast, you'll find a few F-bombs and such. Really, there are far fewer F-bombs than on our skintrack banter sessions, where we discussed the spectrum of adventure films and why this podcast host should not be such a crank regarding modern stoke-focused ski films. Point taken.Rosen knows his craft and practices it like a master. The end product of Reel Rock's and Sender's efforts—their fine human-centered films—are gifts to the rest of us. This is to say that Rosen and the host discuss ski films in the context of the broader adventure film realm. Learn more about Nick and Sender Films here, and find the catalog of Reel Rock films here. You can find us at the-high-route.com. Yeah, there are two hyphens for redundancy, which is a good policy in the mountains. For weight weenies, hyphens weigh next to nothing. The theme music for The High Route Podcast comes from Storms in the Hill Country and the album The Self Transforming (Thank you, Jens Langsjoen). You can find a link to the album here—there are so many good songs on this album. And if you think you've spotted a UFO in the past or visited the 7th dimension, "Beautiful Alien" is a good tune to start with.
Vous avez peut-être entendu parler de Didier Berthod si vous grimpiez aux débuts des années 2000. The following is a conversation with Jon Hawk. Jon is the director of gym operations at Memphis Rox a nonprofit rock climbing gym and community center in South Memphis Tennessee. Founded in 2018, their ethos is rooted in creating a culture of encouragement and empowerment both on and off the wall and they accomplish that by never turning anyone away, regardless of an inability to pay. They believe It's not only about money, but manpower: a willingness to give what one can, be it a helping hand or simply an encouraging word. Their members who can pay-it-forward, do so, to support access for those who can't. Five volunteer hours per month equates to a four-week membership. Memphis Rox is the first nonprofit climbing gym of its size, standing at 32,000 sq ft with yoga and meditation space, a fitness area and system board. The campus also houses Juice Almighty, an in-house café, the Soulsville Community Closet and an Educational Food Garden. In 2020 the documentary Black Ice premiered at the adventure film festival Reel Rock 15. This is how I discovered Memphis Rox. This gym is a living example of hope and love. It's a reminder of the power of community and that when humans work together, amazing progress can be made. Companies supporting their mission include the North Face, Yeti, The Alex Honnold Foundation, Black diamond and many others. Is climbing photography dead? In an era in which everyone has an iPhone and now generative AI can create realistic photographic “content,” what role does a professional photographer play in 2023? We talk about these issues and more with one of the most successful climbing photographers and directors of all time, Corey Rich. Corey isn't just a talented creative, he's a smart and savvy entrepreneur who understands the business of creating photos and videos as well as anyone in the industry. And he's also a good friend! But first, we chat about AB's new film “Resistance Climbing,” which is now in theaters around the world as part of the annual Reel Rock 17 tour. The film captures a climbing community in Palestine, and we talk about how this kind of international climbing development often leads to some fraught questions about motivation and intention. Last, Hayden O'Shea pays homage to the late El Cap pirate, Ammon McNeely, and tells the story of joining Ammon on his first voyage back up the Big Stone after losing his leg. Will a new film from Reel Rock encourage climbers to engage in risky behavior and not use their rubbers on the rock? We discuss Barefoot Charles and his conspicuously well-coifed mane of hair. Next we speak to Lauren DeLauney Miller, a writer and climber who has released a wonderful new book of first person essays from the significant women, both well known and perhaps lesser known, who have made contributions to Yosemite climbing history. Was motiviert die Leute in Memphis Rox? Nina Williams: White-Passing Ever wonder what it's like to send a 55ft boulder… with no rope? My next guest would know. Epic high-baller, aspiring trad climber, and overall badass lady crusher Nina Williams has quite the climbing resume these days. One of the top female climbers in the country, Nina is one the few females to send V13, has stood on the podium at national competitions, and knows how to put down some serious outdoor sends. Perhaps most known for her high-ball ascents of boulders over 10 times her 5'3 height, this girl knows intimately well what it means to face fear, dial in, and execute. In this episode of Sends and Suffers, we go deep into race and privilege in the climbing community and how the BLM and social movements have carried over to the gym and the crag. Half Chinese, half white, Nina is what she dubs, “white-passing” and knows of the struggles minority athletes face. We get into the challenge of keeping the momentum of these movements alive and the difficult but necessary task of taking on that pain and the responsibility of our part in this “new normal” - yeah, it's hard. But we've gotta keep talking about it. We also talk mental game, coaching, and leadership. Nina tells the story of her path from a young competition climber to sending V11 highballs in Bishop, including a vulnerable yet pivot moment that shaped her mindset as a young climber. When she's not crushing or coaching, Nina somehow also manages to balance earning a degree in Communication & Leadership Management. Not gonna lie, this woman is seriously inspiring. 2020 has been a suffer fest of its own, but this girl has goals going into what is hopefully a better year for everyone. Did someone say big wall? Spoiler alert - Nina openly admits to loving trad. You heard it here, kids. We hit it all in this one. Hope you guys like it. You may not know who Peter Mortimer is, and that's fine by him. You're almost certainly intimate with is filmography, however, an ever-evolving array of groundbreaking films three decades in the making. Peter and his partners Josh Lowell and Nick Rosen (among many others) have collaborated to define the climbing film medium. They have literally delivered more climbing psych than any other humans on the planet. Peter, and his newly minted company Sender Films, launched his career with quirky turn-of-the-century features such as "Scary Faces," "Front Range Freaks," and "Return 2 Sender." Although the films sold out theaters, "King Lines," "Progression," and the "First Ascent" series truly put Sender on the map. Noting the insatiable hunger for new footage and a theater experience, Peter and Josh joined forces to launch the Reel Rock Film Tour. The crew booked around 50 shows that first year. Reel Rock 14 will log 600+ in 2019, spanning the globe. Somehow, amidst the chaos of building a global film tour, Peter found time to direct, produce, and occasionally helm the camera for "Valley Uprising" and "Dawn Wall," films years in the making. His highly anticipated feature following the career of Marc-Andre Leclerc inches toward the finish line, currently in post-production. It's difficult to overstate the influence and impact Peter's films have had on the climbing world. Where we once devoured DVDs of straight climbing porn (I mean, we still do), Sender's movies have raised the bar in unimaginable ways, allowing global tours, Netflix features, and paving the way to mainstream success (and, you know, the random Oscar for his friend Jimmy Chin). We're so grateful we could sneak into Sender HQ for a quick chat. If you haven't seen Reel Rock 14 yet, grab tickets right now. The films are as strong as any lineup in the 14 year history of the tour. Have a question, feedback, suggestion, or pitch? Launch a missive at thunderclingpodcast@gmail.com or DM us at @thethundercling on Instagram. We read and respond to every note. And cheers to Ryne Doughty for the great tunes. Reel Rock in Denver actually booked him to perform before each of the four showings at the Oriental Theater! He put on a helluva show. Happy Turkey Day, you heathens!

(31:20) When we think we are at our breaking point, we are not even close. (33:20) What has the transition been like being in the public spotlight? (38:00) The liberating feeling of taking away all expectations. The potentially career-ending accident he overcame. (39:00) The differences between ‘big free wall' climbing vs. regular rock climbing. (43:12) How climbing a ‘big wall' is like learning a second language. (45:30) The adventure of a lifetime: His 7-year journey to ‘summit' the Dawn Wall. (47:00) Being addicted to the stimulus. (51:14) The camaraderie amongst the climbing community. (52:29) Does he find normal life boring? (56:20) The different levels of ‘flow state'. Thundercling: A Super Awesome Rock Climbing Explosion Thunderpod
I was living in South Korea, teaching English during the weekdays and feverishly putting up FAs with a tight crew of expats during the weekends, when I first saw Sender Film's Pilgrimage. The film follows Chris Sharma, Katie Brown, and Nate Gold as they peruse the granite eggs dotting acre upon acre in Hampi, India. Sipping my Hite beer at night, I would watch it on repeat, mouth agape, heart quickening, annoying my non-climber roomie in some shithole apartment in an industrial enclave of Incheon. Dreams of climbing in Hampi finally gave way to planning. After a bit of salesmanship, I'd gathered a crew of six for a month-long foray into the land of the Vijyanagara Empire. Outside of shattering my tibia with five days to go, Hampi gave us adventure in spades, from leaping over king cobras to death highballs to the slow, colorful river life on the banks of the Tungabhadra. Pilgrimage made all of this possible. Ignoring the dangers of hyperbole, Pilgrimage changed all of our lives. Thundercling's first Sauce Night crashes into your ears as an homage to the dreams and aspirations we cull from climbing vids, from the rough and tumble Free Hueco to the finely-crafted character sketches of Free Solo and The Dawn Wall. We abuse our climbing movies. We steal beta. We foment dreams. West Coast Pimp sent me to Bishop, CA for the first time in 2001. Reel Rock hosting duties for the immaculate Valley Uprising demanded my first trip to Yosemite (where I broke another leg -- YAY!). Climbing movies are vessels into which we tuck our dreams and set them a sail into the barely known. For many of us, they are the pyres upon which our ambitions burn. Lynn and Travis, 30 years of climbing and movie drooling between them, join Fidi and I for this round-table on climbing movies, which vids cut the deepest, and an investigation into how to destroy our livers during a single one-hour podcast segment. Crack a libation and enjoy our inaugural Sauce Night! Have some bones to pick with our movie selections? Want to pen an essay for Thundercling? Have an idea for the next Sauce Night? Get a hold of us anytime at thunderclingpodcast@gmail.com! We read and respond to every email we receive. Thanks as always to the lovely Ryne Doughty for the crusher tunes.

This episode Shelley and Christian review “Reckless Daughter: A Portrait of Joni Mitchell” by Professor David Yaffe. Consider this a companion to our interview with Professor Yaffe on Deeper Digs in Rock. Joni Mitchell may be the most influential female recording artist and composer of the late twentieth century. In Reckless Daughter, the music critic David Yaffe tells the remarkable, heart-wrenching story of how the blond girl with the guitar became a superstar of folk music in the 1960s, a key figure in the Laurel Canyon music scene of the 1970s, and the songwriter who spoke resonantly to, and for, audiences across the country. In this intimate biography, drawing on dozens of unprecedented in-person interviews with Mitchell, her childhood friends, and a cast of famous characters, Yaffe reveals the backstory behind the famous songs—from Mitchell’s youth in Canada, her bout with polio at age nine, and her early marriage and the child she gave up for adoption, through the love affairs that inspired masterpieces, and up to the present—and shows us why Mitchell has so enthralled her listeners, her lovers, and her friends. Reckless Daughter is the story of an artist and an era that have left an indelible mark on American music. Published in 2017 by SaraCrichton Books. In this episode of DDiR, Christian has the privilege of chatting with someone who basically helped create the world of punk, post-punk, alternative rock before Year Zero in New York City. None other than Richard Lloyd, co-founder of the band Television and a spark that helped ignite the punk movement at CBGB's. In his new autobiography, 'Everything Is Combustible' Lloyd recalls hanging out with Jimi Hendrix, John Lee Hooker, Buddy Lee, and Led Zeppelin while still in his teens, and other adventures from rock's heydey, relating it all with sharp insights and dry wit. Considered a foundational band of alternative rock, Television’s debut record, Marquee Moon, is widely viewed by critics and musicians as one of the greatest albums ever recorded. As one half of Television’s unique guitar sound, and a legendary solo artist in his own right, Richard Lloyd’s music has influenced a range of bands and artists from U2, Johnny Marr and Joy Division to R.E.M., Sonic Youth, Wilco and John Frusciante.
