Episode 147 of the podcast is the first in a two-part special focusing on C.S. Lewis' Chronicles of Narnia book series originally published between 1950 and 1956, where Chris and Alex look at a handful of screen adaptations that traverse the fantasy and animation intersection. For this first instalment, they compare the 1979 animated film The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe directed by Bill Melendez with the BBC serial of the same name from 1988, both of which adapted Lewis' first and perhaps best known Narnia novel. Joining them is special guest Terry Lindvall, who is the C.S. Lewis Endowed Chair in Communication and Christian Thought and Professor of Communication at Virginia Wesleyan College. He is a C.S. Lewis scholar and expert in American film and media, seeking to see how theological thought, Christian faith and tradition, and cinema can intersect. His recent book crosses squarely into animation, titled Animated Parables: A Pedagogy of Seven Deadly Sins and a Few Virtues (2022), and examines how short animated films teach us, directly and indirectly, about vice and virtue, connecting together a range of global cartoons to explore the animators' role in displaying the seven deadly sins. Listen as they discuss distinctions between the marvellous and the uncanny, and how fantasy shaped Lewis' life and works; his relationship with J.R.R. Tolkien and the influence of Christianity on his brand of fantasy; traditions of limited animation and the medium's potential status as one of ‘supposal'; shifting representations of the eponymous White Witch as both feared and fearful; and what Narnia has to say about the importance of letting children think. **Fantasy/Animation theme tune composed by Francisca Araujo** **As featured on Feedspot's 25 Best London Education Podcasts**

My first guest on the Tami Jackson Show* tonight will be Laura Carno. Laura Carno is a Colorado citizen who understands that politicians are not kings, endowed with some birthright to parcel out our freedoms in tiny doses as they see fit. Carno knows it's not the job of hired civil servants to tell us what size soda to drink, which light bulbs to buy, or what kind of insurance our family needs. Laura believes instead that we're all adults who don't need to be told how to live, who need to stand our ground when government gets the relationship with its citizens upside down. When elected officials forget whose money they are spending and whose rights they are eroding, when they forget who's the boss and who's the public servant—then it's up to citizens to speak out and reset the balance. Laura is the author of the book, Government Ruins Nearly Everything: Reclaiming Social Issues from Uncivil Servants. In the book description: What government touches, it breaks. So why do we ask it to solve our most pressing and personal issues: abortion, schools, guns and marriage? Has its failures with VA hospitals, the war on drugs, farm subsidies, the IRS, NSA leaks, and the war on poverty given us any reason to trust them? Laura's also the subject of a terrific article that's right up my alley at The Daily Signal, "Meet the Colorado Woman Training Teachers to Use Guns to Stop School Violence." The article begins: This fall, some Colorado teachers will return to school armed with knowledge—and guns. Laura Carno, author of “Government Ruins Nearly Everything: Reclaiming Social Issues from Uncivil Servants,” is bringing advanced firearms training to school teachers. Listen in as Laura Carno and I have a conversation about the over-reach of big government and the vital importance of the Second Amendment! ************************ My second guest will be John Biver. John Biver is a writer, activist, and analyst with over twenty-five years of experience in the political arena. John is a Christian, an American citizen, and he currently works in the field of applied political science. When not earning a living the old fashioned way in the private sector, he has worked at the RNC and on Capitol Hill in DC, and at the state and local level in Illinois politics and government. Biver continues to advise candidates and officeholders, and is a graduate of Virginia Wesleyan College, where he studied political philosophy and political science. His personal website is johnbiver.com. John and I will be discussing the latest on the American political scene. We'll grade President Trump and talk about his successes and failures thus far, and what we'd like to see accomplished in the next three plus years. Music plays a role in many religious services and some find that listening to music can be akin to a religious experience. We'll consider the ways these realms overlap and interrelate with WHRO 90.3 FM's Program Director Dwight Davis, Dr. Sandra Billy, director of the Center for Sacred Music and teaches Sacred Music History at Virginia Wesleyan College and Jamie Bernstein, daughter of the legendary composer Leonard Bernstein. The Virginia Arts Festival and the Virginia Symphony Orchestra will stage a new production of Leonard Bernstein's MASS: A Theater Piece for Singers, Players, and Dancers on Friday, April 23 and Saturday, April 24.
Many of our listeners are familiar with Rabbi Michael Panitz, who joins us for our quarterly 'Spiritually Speaking' roundtable discussions. In addition to his duties at Temple Israel, Rabbi Panitz also holds a PhD in History and teaches courses at Virginia Wesleyan College and Old Dominion University. Today we'll talk with him about his course on 'The Rise of Religious Tolerance in the West'. We can't offer actual credit hours for listening, but we do think you'll consider it an hour well spent.
