Recognized as a leader in the law enforcement profession, Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd lives by the importance of first valuing the people he serves that makes every community a thriving place of peace and order.    Join me in this episode of Someone Gets Me — Sheriff Grady Judd Speaks On Visionary Leadership. ▶️    Key point covered in this episode:    ✔️Notable positive changes in Polk County are attributed to Sheriff Grady Judd's leadership. A visionary and hard worker, he was recently recognized as "Sheriff of the Year" by Major County Sheriffs of America. Sheriff Grady shares he has always wanted to work in law enforcement since he was four years old. "That was my dream, and I grew up and got to do exactly that. How many people can say they wake up every morning before the alarm goes off and come to work all excited to help someone? I get to do that every day."   ✔️The toxicity of American politics has created a huge divide in recent years. Sheriff Grady believes that upholding his mission of providing help to all regardless of affiliation, color, or interests is what is most needed now. "I dismiss all of this craziness that we've seen the last few years because that's not the America I know, the America I grew up in. I get up every day, and I choose to see the good in people and respond to people who are struggling. And then we get to provide that help, and that's pretty special to me."   ✔️For Sheriff Grady Judd, law enforcement is impossible without appreciation and concern for the people he serves. "You've got to love people first before you can lead them anywhere. And I love the people of Polk County, and I love the people in the Sheriff's Office. Until you care about them as an individual first, nothing else matters. And that's why I believe that I've been ultimately successful because people you love and care for will reciprocate."   Grady Judd began his career at the Polk County Sheriff 's Office (Florida) in 1972 as a dispatcher. After transferring to the Patrol Division in 1974, he quickly progressed through the ranks – holding every rank from Sergeant to Colonel. Polk County overwhelmingly elected Grady to serve as Sheriff in 2004.   Sheriff Judd has earned higher education degrees through the Masters level – having obtained both Master's and Bachelor's degrees from Rollins College. He is a graduate of the FBI National Academy, the Senior Management Institute for Police, the FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development Seminar, and the FBI National Executive Institute. He was a participant of the Jewish Institute for National Security Affairs (JINSA) Law Enforcement Exchange Program (LEEP).   Sheriff Judd has taught as an adjunct professor at both the University of South Florida and Florida Southern College. He is a Polk County School Board Hall of Fame inductee, a past recipient of Polk State College's prestigious Distinguished Alumni Award, the 2008 Boy Scouts of America Distinguished Citizen Award, Protect Our Children Junny Award, the 2013 Callyo's Leaders in Online Child Protection Award, as well as the 2013 Church Women United Human Rights Award. He continues to serve the community on several boards and committees, including the Volunteers in Service to the Elderly (VISTE) and Polk Vision. He is a past President of the Florida Sheriffs Association and the immediate past President of the Major County Sheriffs of America, a national organization serving counties with a population of 500,000 or more. In 2020, he was appointed by the President of the United States to the Coordinating Council on Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention committee, for a three-year term. I'll talk about its origins and significance with Keith Huneycutt of Florida Southern College in this episode.

Cronyism: Liberty versus Power in America 1607-1849 describes the evolution of political favor seeking in early American history, from the colonial era to the Mexican War. Newman argues that cronyism emerged from the perennial clash between the forces of liberty and power. When the interventionist Federalists, National Republicans, and Whigs controlled the government, special-interest policies—central banking, protective tariffs, businesses subsidies, territorial expansion, and so on—drastically increased. However, after the libertarian Jeffersonian Republicans and Jacksonian Democrats assumed the command posts, cronyism only moderately declined before resuming its upward march. “Power,” Lord Acton teaches us, “tends to corrupt,” and slowly but surely the proponents of limited government turned into the privilege granting parties they previously despised.-Patrick is Assistant Professor of Economics at Florida Southern College. He completed his PhD in the Department of Economics at George Mason University.

According to CBS News Customers at Credit Karma carried an additional $2.2 billion in overdue medical debt from January 2020 through March 2021, reaching about $47 billion in total — the highest point in at least 16 months. Overdue medical bills are also impacting more people, Credit Karma also found that an additional 2.5 million people saw their medical debt enter collections since the pandemic started. In this episode, we talk about healthcare receivables and an out-of-the-box approach to some of the issues surrounding healthcare debt.   In 2014 two former debt collection executives, Craig Antico and Jerry Ashton founded a company called RIP Medical Debt.Their website mentions they've helped over 2.5 million people abolish 4 billion dollars of medical debt and that number is growing every day.  With so much medical debt and increasing healthcare costs, we need out-of-the-box solutions. Craig shares insight into healthcare debt, why it makes sense to embrace additional options in how to handle the debt, and lessons learned in their journey.Guest: Craig AnticoCraig Antico is the co-founder of  RIP Medical Debt, the national charity that has acquired and abolished over $5 billion in unpayable medical debt for over three million people since 2014. Craig understands the ins and outs of the debt collection industry because he was a financial industry leader in collections, debt buying, and outsourcing for 30-years! After completing his undergraduate degree at Florida Southern College in finance and economics, Craig went on to Pace University for his MBA in finance. His decades of experience include working for IBM, Johnson & Johnson, and several Fortune 100 companies.Purchasing medical debts to then abolish them, the core of RIP's work, didn't cross Craig's mind until a chance introduction facilitated by his long-time partner in the debt collection industry – and RIP co-founder – Jerry Ashton. Jerry had connected with a group of activists that wanted to cancel debts as a charitable good using donated funds. Realizing the depth and scope of medical debt's burden on already struggling Americans, Craig and Jerry resolved to start a nonprofit to champion this cause. After a hard road learning how to raise money, Craig and Jerry got their big break in 2016 when producers from the HBO series, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, inquired about the show's host purchasing and eliminating medical debt for an upcoming episode. Thanks to RIP's guidance, John Oliver abolished $15 million in debt on a segment that has been watched by over fifteen million people.Craig has appeared on NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt, PBS Newshour, and many other media outlets, including over 50 local TV stations throughout the country. The New York Times, The Guardian, Forbes, AARP, The Washington Post, and many others have published articles about Antico and RIP Medical Debt.  He is the author of the book “End Medical Debt,” now in its second edition. Resources:    Website: https://ripmedicaldebt.org/    Company LinkedIn:  https://www.linkedin.com/company/rip-medical-debt/    Email:  cjantico@gmail.com   LinkedIn: Personal: https://www.linkedin.com/in/antico/Additional Resources:RIP Medical Debt Story2021 US Census Medical Debt in America Report
