Wake Wood (2009), The Wind (2018), Apostle (2018) Folk horror has its roots in tales of witches and paganism, stretching back centuries. In cinema, the term "folk horror" was first coined by Rod Cooper in Kine Weekly to describe the 1971 classic Blood on Satan's Claw. However, the themes that define folk horror—witchcraft, ancient rituals, and the eerie power of nature—have been present since the earliest days of film. A prime example is Benjamin Christensen's Häxan (1922), which delves into witchcraft and age-old rites. Regardless of its origins or definitions, folk horror has endured over time, weaving its way through the history of cinema. In recent decades, the genre has experienced a remarkable resurgence, not just in the United States but globally. This renewed interest may owe much to Kier-La Janisse's expansive 2021 documentary, Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched, which shone a spotlight on the subgenre and sparked widespread conversation. With the recent release of Volume Two of Severin's All the Haunts Be Ours box sets, now seems the perfect time to explore some of the standout modern folk horror films from the past two decades. So, venture with us into the remote villages, pagan rites, and shadowy woods where all the horrors sit waiting for you in the dark corners where people rarely go.  Films mentioned in this episode: Abigail (2024), Alucarda (1977), Apostle (2018), Birth/Re-birth (2023), Blood on Satan's Claw (1971), Cuckoo (2024), Dracula (2006), Five Nights at Freddy's (2023), Flesh and the Fiends (1960), Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024), Isolation (2005), Pet Sematary (1989), Rosemary's Baby (1968), Underworld (2003), Wake Wood (2009), The Wicker Man (1973), The Wind (2018), Witchfinder General (1968), Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched (2021), Zombie (1979)

Who do you think you are? We are! Welcome back to the Grave Plot for the big 1-7-5. We kick off the episode with a bunch of nonsense about vaccines and other irrelevant rantings. Finally, we get to Real World Horror, where we talk about the latest chapter in the TRUE STORY of The Amityville Horror (cue eye roll). In Horror Business, we discuss Rob Zombie's rumored Munsters movie, a TV series based on Let the Right One In, and a Frankenstein-esque film featuring Willem Dafoe and Emma Stone. This, naturally, led into a discussion on Disney villains. We then give our opinions on a new Predator comic series and a miniseries based on R.L. Stine's Just Beyond series of graphic novels. In our film reviews, we head off to the Emerald Isle for our annual St. Patrick's Day salute to Irish horror. First up we talk about the resurrection thriller Wake Wood, a 2009 movie about a pagan ritual gone wrong. Who would have thought? We then review the supernatural comedy Extra Ordinary, featuring Will Forte as a Satan-worshipping music star and the ghost hunting duo that serves as his foil. Oh yeah, we also drank a bunch. Because it's St. Patrick's Day. Enjoy!

Chris & Kelsey make horror movie wishes that end up in monkey's paw results with an Irish twist (For example, Chris wanted to watch Wishmaster again and got Leprechaun 3 instead). The Classic Film: Leprechaun 3 (1995) "An evil leprechaun finds himself in Las Vegas, where he proceeds to cause mischief by killing people, granting twisted wishes, and infecting a young man with his green blood” (IMDb.com). The Leprechaun franchise certainly isn't getting better and seems to have hit levels of absurdity that better franchises took a couple more entries to reach. The Modern Film: Wake Wood (2009) "The parents of a girl who was killed by a savage dog are granted the opportunity to spend three days with their deceased daughter” (IMDb.com). Wake Wood is another one of those movies that we could take or leave, but its promise just makes each of our quibbles all the more frustrating. From the writer and director team behind pretty decent Hammer flick Wake Wood comes... well, not that good a follow up. Too many ideas, not enough film, essentially. Continuing the "pastoral" schtick from Ben Wheatley's ouvre but sans Wheatley cuz I need a break from that guy.

Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. Ireland seems to have joined the ranks of nations putting out some interesting and in some cases impressive horror films. Some of the higher profile flicks include Wake Wood, Grabbers, The Canal, and The Hallow to just name a few. But before all of them, back in 2005, a small film titled Isolation appeared that quickly drew a cult following simply for the fact of its premise alone. A cattle farmer in rural Ireland, Dan Reilly, slowly watches his business fall upon hard times. Soon, however, with the help of Orla, the local veterinarian, he is paired up with John, a bio-geneticist, who offers a way back into the "black" and therefore his livelihood. John is working on ways to improve the turnaround of farm-to-table beef and hopefully revolutionize both farming and genetics. However, any progress seems to be all too slow for Dan, and soon things unexpected with John's experiments could lead to disaster. Directed and written by Dan O'Brien, who's since gone on to science-horror and slashers, Isolation seems to pay tribute to such films as Alien, The Thing, Saturn 3, among others. Dark and grimy, and with a tone of desperation throughout, the movie pulls no punches with its shock. Dark Discussions reviews this film that co-host Abe suggested was worthy of a critique. https://www.facebook.com/hellbentforhorror/ We aren't out of the woods yet...   Welcome to Episode 2.5! This is a companion piece to Episode Two, “If You Aren’t Afraid in The Woods, You Haven’t Gone Deep Enough”, which delved into the world of Folk Horror. Here we'll discuss movies and books I'd loved to have talked about in the episode, but they just didn’t fit into "the story" completely, or there just wasn’t enough time. However, the campfire still has some embers left, and there's a little time before dawn. Just enough time for a few more stories. Enter The Addendum of Doom!   Show Notes- for Episode 002.5- Addendum of Doom   “Blood on Satan’s Claw” (1971) Director: Piers Haggard   “Wake Wood” (2009) Director: David Keating   “Kill List” (2011): Director: Ben Wheatley Extra Credit: Ben Wheatley’s film, “A Field in England” (2014)   Referenced films: “Point Blank” (1967): Director: John Boorman “The Wicker Man” (1973): Directed by: Robin Hardy   S.A. Bradley’s (Incomplete and Ready-For-Debate) Additional List of Folk Horror Films and Television: The Blair Witch Project (1999)  Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale (2010) Viy (1967) The Devils (1971) Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975) Kwaidan (1964) The Company of Wolves (1984) Pan’s Labyrinth (2006) Cry of the Banshee (1970) Lair of the White Worm (1988) Rites of Spring (2011) Black Death (2010) Television shows: Note: Both of these are British and from the 70’s, and were made as CHILDREN’S PROGRAMMING. It’s hard to even fathom either of these being broadcast on PBS in the United States. I think it’s safe to say that Britain has a more comfortable relationship with their ancient past. Children of the Stones (1977) The Owl Service (1969-1970)     This is S.A. Bradley, and I’m a life-long horror lover. This podcast combines horror history, personal observations, common themes, and cultural trends to tell a story with each episode.  Here we talk about all things horror. Horror movies, books, comics, hosts, conventions.  The door swings wide here, and all types of horror are welcome.  Each episode covers some aspect of horror with lots of viewing or reading suggestions for you to check out.  I want to start conversations with people about all types of horror.  I’ve been a fan all my life, and I love all the different styles: Classic Universal Monsters, Slasher Films, Found Footage, French Extreme, Asian Extreme, Korean Ghost Stories, J-Horror, Hammer Horror Films, Amicus Films, Glass Eye Pix, EC Horror Comics, Creature Features, Horror Hosts, Italian Zombie movies, Spanish Zombie movies, George Romero Zombie movies, Giallo, Silent Horror Films, Nature Run Amok, Atomic Age Horror, Roughies, Exploitation, Horror Literature, Serial Killer, Halloween, B-Movie, Splatter films, ghost stories, Folk Horror, supernatural, body horror, torture porn, VHS, Psycho
