The startup was bought by Church & Dwight, the personal care group that owns Nair and Arm & Hammer, in an $880 million deal. The staff also discusses the rise and fall of Target in the past couple of years, with the retailer marred by pullback in consumer spending and boycotts. In this episode, Daniels and Barkho also welcome Michelle Gabe (18:40), the director of marketing and partnerships at IFG, the parent company of King's Hawaiian, Grillo's Pickles, and Killer Brownie. Gabe joins the show to discuss what goes into brands' collaborations with entertainment franchises and other pop culture moments, especially in film and television. The trend was kicked into high gear during 2023's summer of “Barbie,” when brands of all sizes went pink. Last year, a similar wave was brought on by the “Wicked” movie. Even prestige TV series are getting in on product tie-ins through brand collaborations, as this past season of “White Lotus” showed. During her previous role at truffle sauce startup Truff, Gabe helped bring these types of partnerships to life, such as a collectibles collaboration with the “Super Mario Bros. 14 months after co-founding the private equity firm Skky Partners, Kim Kardashian finally took a bit of her own advice to "get your f*cking azz up and work." It was recently announced that the first capital investment for Skky Partners will be to acquire a “significant minority stake” in truffle-infused hot sauce and condiment brand TRUFF. Now…stick with me here for a moment because I'm going to connect some dots that will lead to a future Kim K investment. Skky Partners notes that food and beverage CPG won't be its exclusive investment focus, but this TRUFF deal got me thinking about how Oprah loves truffles. Oprah also has her annual “favorite things” list, but this is about Kim K. So, what's one of her favorite things from this year? In a Vogue interview, she shouted out Mid-Day Squares. Has “organic” lost its sheen? Based on Nielsen IQ data presented by Whipstitch Capital's Nick McCoy, it would appear so. A veteran food and beverage investment banker, McCoy spoke at a recent event in Vail, Colorado hosted by private equity firm Manna Tree. As part of a presentation on deal flow and trends in the natural products industry, he revealed a shift of the most important product attributes for consumers of natural brands, and how Gen Z and Alpha's current spending patterns can inform brands about where to invest their resources. The Manna Tree event also featured fireside chats with General Mills M&A director Andrew Petz and Holly Adrien, who leads natural and organic strategy for Kroger and is the retailer's innovation manager, each of whom shared insights about their respective roles amid an evolving landscape for natural products. Ray attended the event and shared takeaways in this episode, which also includes the hosts' assessment of Nutrabolt's investment in supplement brand Bloom Nutrition and the acquisition of plant-based creamer brand nutpods.   Chris breaks out the sous vide machine to try cooking shrimp using this method for the first time.  It is so easy and so great; we plan on doing it a lot.  He also shares a recipe for some cajun shrimp bread which you can find below: You can use French baguette or ciabatta bread sliced in half long ways. Preheat oven or grill to 400F  Sous Vide or cook half pound of shrimp with three cloves of minced garlic with salt and pepper to taste until firm and cooked through, about 6-8 minutes in the oven.  Let shrimp cool and then dice into small, bite sized pieces.  Combine cooked shrimp with the following: One teaspoon favorite Italian seasoning or rub  One third cup of mayo (We love Truff spicy mayo)  One quarter cup Mozzarella fresh graded cheese  Two tablespoons freshly grated Parmesan cheese  One quarter cup sour cream    Top the bread with your shrimp mixture and season with more cajun seasoning like Slap Ya Mama  Bake in oven for six to ten minutes or until cheese is melted. How do you wield considerable social influence to authentically promote a consumer brand? That's the central question facing the five co-owners of JAJA Tequila, who collectively have nearly 40 million followers across several social media platforms.  Self-described as “the first tequila created for the digital generation,” JAJA was founded in 2018 by entrepreneurs Martin Hoffstein, Maurice Tebele and brother Elliot Tebele, the latter of whom is best known as the creator of popular Instagram meme account,  @f__kjerry. JAJA is also co-owned by Alex Pall and Drew Taggart, who form globally renowned electronic DJ duo The Chainsmokers. Leveraging their social capital and fame to promote JAJA has helped the brand achieve triple-digit growth year-over-year and outpace the overall category for premium tequila, according to the company. JAJA's resonance with younger consumers attracted the attention of international spirits distributor Proximo Spirits, which signed a production and global distribution deal with the brand in 2021. In this episode, Maurice Tebele and Hoffstein spoke about how they evaluated the opportunity to launch a digital-centric tequila brand, why they describe JAJA as “an anti-celeb brand” and how “subtle integration” is the key to their social media strategy. They also explained how a risque and edgy social marketing strategy has benefited the brand, how they elicit the best out of their respective skill sets and how they determined that Proximo would be the right strategic partner for the company.
