Fascism is scary AF but it's always been ripe for satire, so as counter programming to this week's RNC, we're pairing strains with two sendups of strutting authoritarians with THE ANTIFA EPISODE, aka the F--K FASCISM EPISODE. Hitler was named chancellor of Germany in January 1933, and the Marx Brothers spoofed the shit out of him by the end of the year with DUCK SOUP, which is widely considered to be their greatest work. Groucho is Roofus T. Firefly, who is installed on the throne of of Freedonia by wealthy widow Mrs. Teasdale (Margaret Hamilton). The plot hardly matters though, as it's all about the classic mirror gag, Harpo taking an oversized pair of scissors to everything he can lay his hands on, and the stellar word play between Chico and Groucho. Directed by Leo McCarey (AN AFFAIR TO REMEMBER) with a surprising amount of musical numbers. FREEDONIA! FREEDONIA! Then we pay tribute to Roger Corman with DEATH RACE 2000, his cult hit about a future fascist America where David Carradine, Mary Woronov, and Sylvester Stallone compete in a coast-to-coast race where they score points by running over hapless pedestrians in their rad muscle cars. Bob saw this at the Redwood City Drive In when he was 7-years-old and it's safe to say that the satire went waaaay over his head back then. Also featuring Martin Kove (KOBRA KAI) and Wendy Dio (wife of Ronnie James), and directed by the great Paul Bartel. Bob also tells you what he really thought of Kevin Costner's HORIZON, beardless Cory reveals the terrible new Paramount logo, Philena blames everything on people born in 1999, and Bob wonders what the hell is wrong with Generation X. Plus, it's FREEE SLURPEE DAY! When Amy Ray first started playing music with her Indigo Girls bandmate, Emily Saliers, her "head felt like it was going to explode". She remembers thinking, "This is amazing. Not, we sound amazing. But this feels amazing. It was always about, This feels amazing." They've been playing together for over 35 years now and it's their music that the queer community (and Greta Gerwig in the new Barbie movie) continues to return to again and again. Amy joins us to talk about the band's legacy, coming out publicly in the '90s, and the lasting power of "Closer to Fine". Jack meeting his creative hero, Bobby McFerrin, and being inspired to think of his voice as his instrument → 3. Tenacious D being encouraged by Harry Shearer at an early concert → 4. Building a creative process based in acting. Jack Black and Kyle Gass make up the Greatest Band in the World: Tenacious D. The band had a variety series on HBO that aired in 1999. Their self-titled album was released in the fall of 2001 and has since been certified Platinum. The duo completed their first feature film together - Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny - which was released in November, 2006. The album Rize of the Fenix followed in 2012, receiving a GRAMMY nomination for Best Comedy Album. In 2014, Tenacious D won a GRAMMY Award in the category of Best Metal Performance for their cover of Ronnie James Dio's “The Last In Line.” On November 2, 2018, Tenacious D released Tenacious D in Post-Apocalypto – an animated film, with each frame hand-drawn by Black and every character voiced by Black and Gass. Alongside the film, the band also dropped the album Post-Apocalypto, which acted as the soundtrack to the series, and a graphic novel in 2020. In 2021 and 2022, the duo released a series of cover songs whose proceeds went to a number of charities, putting their own spin on The Beatles, The Who, and the camp classic “The Time Warp.” They also launched their own fiber bars line in conjunction with NuGo Nutrition called Tenacious D Fiber d'Lish. Up next was the Audible Original Words + Music | Vol. 29 | Tenacious D's The Road To Redunktion, featuring 30 years of never-before-heard archival audio, and bringing to life every anecdote with a docu-quality that places listeners right then and there. Tenacious D continues to sell out massive shows across the world, which should come as no surprise for the Greatest Band That Ever Played on Planet Earth.   Follow Silverlake Conservatory of Music at @silverlake_conservatory  For more information on Parallel, visit parallel.la Follow Cadence13 at @cadence13 Follow Tenacious D at @tenaciousd Follow Flea at @flea333 To learn more about listener data and our privacy practices visit: https://www.audacyinc.com/privacy-policy Learn more about your ad choices. The end is near! It’s eschatology and R.E.M. in part one of this two-part almost-the-end-of-the-season mega-episode. After discussing some of the greatest apocalyptic tunes in the history of rock and roll, your intrepid cohosts settle on a 1987 hit from R.E.M., “It’s the End of the World As We Know It (and I Feel Fine).” Along the way, Garrick tries to convince everyone that “The Final Countdown” by Europe is a song about the end of time, but of course it isn’t and Garrick probably already knows that. Timothy reminisces about the films that terrorized him in his fundamentalist childhood before defining “eschatology” and discussing different views of the end of time. What Garrick and Timothy discover as they take a look at the end of time is that, in the late modern era, eschatologies shifted from looking forward to looking inward. In many contexts, the result has been a failure to talk about the end of time at all. And yet, an avoidance of this topic is no less harmful than an over-emphasis on it. The episode ends with a cliffhanger as the dynamic duo begins to list four essential truths about the end of time but then stops after the first one. To discover the rest of these essential truths, be sure to listen to part two of this episode. This episode’s Toybox Hero Tournament is the most ridiculous encounter yet in a season that has been a veritable fountain of ridiculousness. Garrick puts on a bomber jacket and plays a song on his daughter’s ukulele, hoping to save himself from certain destruction by calming the wrath of an Amazonian superheroine. The superheroine is unimpressed and, now, there is one less ukulele in the world. Also, “Ukulele Wonder Women” would be the perfect name for an all-girl acoustic punk band. The new cover art for this season was created by Dani Wallace (daniwallace.myportfolio.com). In Today's Episode Timothy Paul Jones, Ph.D., is C. Edwin Gheens Professor of Christian Ministry at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He teaches in the areas of family ministry and applied apologetics. He has authored or edited more than a dozen books, including Why Should I Trust the Bible?, The God Who Goes Before You, Perspectives on Family Ministry, and Christian History Made Easy. For more than 25 years, actors and musicians Jack Black and Kyle Gass have been performing as the rock satire band Tenacious D.  They’ve toured around the world, recorded Grammy-winning albums, started a music festival, made a tv show, made a movie, then made an animated movie, and now they’ve even put out a new graphic novel.  Today Kyle and Jack join me on the show as we get into how they’ve managed to outlast the lifespan of most bands and how satirizing rock bands has led to their playing with everyone from Metallica to Kid Rock.  They reveal how Bob Odenkirk and David Cross gave them their first big break, how their movie The Pick of Destiny went from an initial box-office failure to cult film status, and their dream cast for a Tenacious D musical on Broadway.  They discuss what was like to voice every single character and hand draw every frame of animation for their second film Post-Apocalypto, how the movie and now graphic novel of Post-Apocalypto address everything from toxic masculinity to Donald Trump, and how being the self-proclaimed “World’s Greatest Band” gives them a little insight into Trump’s narcissism.  Plus the time Kyle had to go on stage with partial facial paralysis, Jack gets a stalker in the middle of our interview, and Kyle shares memories of his brief stint as a census taker. Order their new graphic novel Post-Apocalypto on Amazon or order a signed copy at www.tenaciousd.com.  You can also follow the guys on Twitter at @JackBlack and @GassLeak.   Today's episode was sponsored by the new podcast What’s Ahead with Steve Forbes.  On What’s Ahead, financial legend Steve Forbes sits down with today’s leading business, economic, and cultural minds everyone from CEOs to scientists to celebrities to give listeners a better grasp of what’s coming, as well as sharing his own perspectives on the day’s most pressing issues.  Check out What’s Ahead with Steve Forbes on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher or wherever you get your podcasts. Scott pours some sugar on HAIM and Todd anoints a band "the greatest of all time!" Trust me, it ain't the Beatles. More highlights: - The Marvel Minute(s) (28:45) - Movie-themed tattoos (35:59) - A look at Ron Howard's career (49:39) - A Grinch reboot?? (54:36)

Among the most revered rock bands in music history, the Ramones have been ranked by Spin Magazine as the #2 "Greatest Band of All Time," second only to the Beatles. Renowned drummer Marky Ramone joins us to play some music and talk about his new memoir, PUNK ROCK BLITZKRIEG: My Life as a Ramone . We will be playing  you a classic interview with Marky Ramone that I conducted in January. Lee Presson and the Nails is (are) an award-winning nine-piece jazz band from San Francisco. Led by the manic Lee Presson, LPN has been pounding out their peculiar brand of sinister swing since 1994. Often accompanied by dancers, backup singers and general craziness, Lee Presson is one of the most dynamic and fun bands around.  We will be playing a classic interview with Lee from this past January.

If you are living in the US it's pretty hard not to get sucked into all things political right now and if you were hoping for an escape from it in this podcast you will be sorely disappointed. As Bono has shown us music and politics go hand in hand and although the LMP doesn't officially support a candidate we do think voting is important enough to be featured on a LMP PSA. The voter registration deadlines are fastly approaching in many states, including my home state of Missouri where the last day to register is October 8th. Even if you haven't made up your mind on who to vote for or even whether or not you will vote, the LMP strongly encourages you to register anyways in case you make up your mind when it's too late. It only takes about 3 minutes and can even be completed online by going to either voteforchange.com or johnmccain.com. One contest that does not require expensive ad campaigns and complicated polling is for the title of Greatest Band in the World. This episode features music from the one band that experts and fans can all agree on. I'm speaking, of course, about Tenacious D. The dynamic duo of Kyle Gass and Jack Black take rocking to a whole new level and have even been known to rock a face clean off. If you are offended by crude language or humor of any kind please look elsewhere. For all others please enjoy Tenacious D from their January 22, 2002 stop at the Roseland Ballroom in New York City.
