The Trade Desk's Chief Operating Officer, Michelle Hulst discusses the ‘real anxiety' marketers felt upon learning of the upcoming deprecation of third-party cookies, and why she was initially frustrated when Google delayed the timeline. At the same time, Hulst believes this period of adjustment is exactly what digital marketers needed to rethink how they connect with consumers, and the need to reaffirm the 'quid pro quo' between advertising and customers. Market intelligence company CivicScience, along with key strategic partners, today announced the launch of a new media and advertising company, aimed at revolutionizing digital marketing in a privacy-centric future. The startup will be seeded with an initial investment of $15 million and run by accomplished industry leaders. The new venture is supported by strategic investors including Thomas Tull, founder of Legendary Entertainment, Jeff Wilke, former CEO of Worldwide Consumer at Amazon, and The NPD Group. The new company will be headed by Doug Lauretano as CEO. A 20-year veteran of media and technology, he brings a breadth of experience from Fortune, CNN, WSJ Digital Network, and, most recently, Media.net, where he led efforts to launch and build a new business as SVP & GM. CivicScience CEO John Dick gives us the whole story of how the new company (with a placeholder name of "NewCo") is incredibly well positioned because of CivicScience's scale and the "responsibly-farmed" way it collects data to power a new era of ethical, privacy-first digital advertising. Built on CivicScience's fast-growing, industry-leading market intelligence platform, the new company will leverage first-party, privacy-compliant data from over 100 million survey respondents and relationships with hundreds of leading digital publishers and Fortune 500 advertisers who use the CivicScience platform. As privacy regulations and the elimination of third-party cookies accelerate, the company is uniquely positioned to deliver ethical, consumer-friendly advertising on the open web.

After 12 years in the advertising space, my guest today decided to start his own newsletter to level the playing field and provide knowledge and insights that he learned through being immersed in ad tech. Most recently at Megaphone, Bryan Barletta has a wealth of knowledge when it comes to understanding the landscape of podcast advertising. He's a big believer in democratizing knowledge to make sure everyone understands what goes into effectively leveraging the technology that exists in the world of advertising. We recorded this on Clubhouse and Squadcast simultaneously, so you may notice a sound change toward the end of the episode. We cover a wide range of topics including understanding what he calls the PodScape when it comes to knowing who the players are. we start off with the lightning round in which he shares some definitions for some commonly used terms that you may or may not already know. He gives us a history lesson when it comes to podcast attribution and we talk about the role that Spotify has since it's been investing so much money in the podcast space. His newsletter, SoundsProfitable.com, is the buzzword of podcast Adtech.Website: SoundsProfitable.comEmail: bryanbarletta@gmail.com

Namely, according to Shields, Google is trying to preserve its power as the most powerful ad targeting machine in the world, while Apple is looking to assert its influence under the veil of privacy. Meanwhile, the rest of the ad ecosystem is simply trying to hang on.Guest: Ronan ShieldsHost: Mike ShieldsProducer: Kenya Hayes

Wolfe theorizes that McLuhan may have thought that association of his ideas with those of a Catholic theologian, albeit one suppressed by Rome, might have denied him the intellectual audience he wanted to reach and so omitted all reference of de Chardin from his published work, while privately acknowledging his influence. --- The McLuhan Institute exists to explore and understand the personal and social effects and implications of technology, following the pioneering work of Marshall McLuhan.

My guest this week has always been a builder and video games and computers got her into STEM - despite her dad saying that computers would never catch on. She acknowledges that something strange happens to the confidence of girls in STEM in high school, and she herself has experienced challenges in being female at work. Despite experiencing all this herself and fighting against stereotypes and cultural expectations; self-confidence has always seen her through. Her main message is that you should always surround yourself with supportive people. People who believe in you until you learn to believe in yourself. All this and so much more on Scilence..
