Rone Shavers joins Jared for our annual application episode to discuss the differences between MFA and PhD applications and programs. Rone and Jared talk about how to choose the right program, put together the best application, and get the most out of your time in a program. Before that, they discuss Rone's “funky” novel Silverfish and how getting over the pressure of making a commercially viable book allowed him to write the book he wanted to write. Rone Shavers is the director of the creative writing program at The University of Utah, which offers both an MFA and a PhD in creative writing. Rone is the author of the experimental Afrofuturist novel Silverfish from Clash Books, a finalist for the 2021 Council of Literary Magazines and Presses (CLMP) Firecracker Award in Fiction and one of The Brooklyn Rail's “Best Books of 2020.” He is also fiction and hybrid genre editor at the award-winning journal, Obsidian: Literature and Arts in the African Diaspora. Joel Silverman has spent the last 41 years on the manufacturing side of the business with companies like MXR, DBX, Lexicon, and Millennia. Before this long successful career, Joel who was based in Rochester, NY started Silverfish Audio in 1971. In the summer of 74, Joel had been working with Bonnie Raitt while at Brighton Sound. Ross Ritto joined up with Joel to start building a speaker system for a Bonnie Raitt tour, which is really where it all started to come together for Silverfish Audio.Bill Thompson was co-owner of Brighton Sound before moving on to start Ashly Audio. Early on they were building custom consoles, of which Silverfish had the most. These consoles were ahead of their time with parametric eq's on the outputs, built-in speaker crossovers, compressors, and moreIn 1976, Silverfish landed Jimmy Buffet as a touring client. As they took on more clients and tours grew, it led them to open up an office in Burbank CA in 1978. The company continued to grow as Joel decided to leave the sound company and start the manufacturing side of his career. In 1980 Silverfish moved to San Diego. During this time Dave Shadoan joined the company and became half owner with Ross Ritto. They changed the name to "Southern California Sound Image” in 1984. They are celebrating 50 years in business and Jimmy Buffet is still a client to this day------------------ Check out www.howwegotloud.com for more details and other episodes

In this episode, I am joined by Steve Nider formerly of Silverfish Audio, which went on to become Sound Image, one of the largest sound companies in the world. After my last episode with Greg Price, I shared a photo he sent me, of a Pablo Cruiz show in 1978 with Silverfish Audio. The console at the time was a custom-built Ashly, with features like 4 band parametric EQ on every output, LED metering, and adjustable crossovers built into the desk. These features on a console were unheard of at the time. Ashly made very few consoles before realizing the economics of it were not great, so they shifted focus to dedicated outboard gear only. Silverfish Audio was one of the few companies to have these consoles. Based in Rochester, NY Nider was in the right place at the right time and kind of "fell into the business" at a young age. SivlerFish Audio also located in Rochester started in 1971 and moved to San Diego in 1978, during that time they had 3 touring systems for artists like Jimmy Buffet, Bonnie Raitt, Pablo Cruise, Jackson Brown, and more. Jump in now and hear Steve's journey in and out of the touring world along with some fun stories along the way.Check out www.howwegotloud.com for more details and other episodes Please check out and support The Roadie Clinic, Their mission is simple. "We exist to empower & heal roadies and their families by providing resources & services tailored to the struggles of the touring lifestyle."
“…and today we're talking about a bookworm. Literally, but also not literally. D.H. Lawrence (1885-1930) started a firestorm with his 1928 novel Lady Chatterley's Lover, which was quickly banned around the world. But the novel eventually found its way into print, after winning numerous obscenity trials in the 1950s and 60s, and today it's widely available (if not always widely read). In this episode, Jacke talks to Indian novelist Saikat Majumdar (The Middle Finger, Silverfish) about Saikat's childhood, his journey to becoming a writer, and his admiration for Lawrence's classic novel. With the first downhill World Cup in Leogang rapidly approaching, I thought it would be a good time to catch up with Eliot and Neko. We sat down to find out what they’ve been up to since we last spoke. Eliot tells us about his move to Santa Cruz and how he’ll be joining Rob Warner in the commentary booth this season. Neko shares how his preparation for the season has been going, along with talking about the US based racing so far this year. The guys also give their thoughts on the upcoming race season. We did unfortunately have some issues with Neko’s audio which mean it sounds a bit like a zoom call in a few spots. So apologies for that. I’ve bought him a new microphone that is winging it’s way to him right now. That means our post race shows will be all good. This week we’re continuing the mountain bike testing theme. I recently got invited to a ride with MBUK and BikeRadar Tech Editor, Rob Weaver, and owner and designer of Cotic Bikes, Cy Turner. Cy wanted to spend some time with Rob to get his thoughts on the review of their bike in the recent Bike of the Year test. So I thought it would be a good opportunity to sit down and find out if mountain bike designers and testers actually get on. We chat about how the Bike of the Year test works. Then we find out what it’s like as a designer when your bike goes on test, and how Cy deals with the positive and negatives that come with it. This was a fascinating insight into the relationship between a bike brand and a journalist and I hope you enjoy listening. So sit back, hit play and give this episode with Rob Weaver and Cy Turner a listen. You can check out Rob's work on bikeradar.com and in MBUK magazine here. You can find Cotic at cotic.co.uk, on Instagram @coticbikes and on YouTube here. Supporting Partners CushCore I’ve been riding CushCore for over two years now and I love the changes it makes to the way my bike rides. It’s more damped, carries momentum better through rough terrain as it doesn’t get held up so much on square edges, and it has more support in the turns. CushCore really does help you go bigger, corner harder and ride faster with total confidence! If you’re based in the UK then you can purchase them directly from Silverfish over at silverfish-uk.com. If you’re elsewhere in the world, then check out cushcore.com. Nukeproof Nukeproof have given their ridewear range a massive overhaul. As part of this, they’ve been really focussed on the environmental side of things, now using Bluesign approved fabrics and OEKO-TEX certification wherever possible. They are also committed to reduce wastage from previous seasons fabrics with their ‘dead-stock line’ which will use the offcuts and wastage to create limited runs of products in high-end premium fabrics. There are 3 main ranges, the first of which is Outland, which is designed to work well on the bike, but to not look out of place off it, so it has subtle branding and is perfect for those post ride beers. Then there is the Blackline range, which is designed to perform all day long in the saddle. Finally there is Blackline Race which is what their team riders will be competing in, and is designed to be the ultimate gear for athletes performing at the highest level. If you want to check it out for yourself, then head over to nukeproof.com to see the entire range. Guy Kesteven is one of the most experienced mountain bike testers in the industry. Having tested literally thousands of bikes over nearly 25 years, there aren’t many people who know more about bikes and kit than Guy does. We sat down to chat about Guy’s journey into the sport, his career so far, how testing works, and where things are heading. Guy has seen a huge amount of change over his career. From bikes that barely worked, to the amazing machines we have today. From the world where print media ruled the day, to the days of the internet, social media and YouTube. Guy is a great character and we cover all sorts in this wide ranging conversation. So sit back, hit play and give this episode with Guy Kesteven a listen. Broken partings making strange goodbyes. Hopeless cases with fake alibis This is your blurb. Deal with it, yeah? Get excited because this SILENCE! is a The Beast Must Die Solo Special! By that we mean The Beast is extremely busy and off on his own, working hard and, crucially, not appearing on this podcast. Nevertheless, Gary Lactus loves to party (alone in his car like sad, middle aged man who is wondering where it all went wrong) so he’s invited some top guests to fool around with and have a really great time. What’s that sound of creaking gears and whining servos? Why, it’s Spare 5 who, although not a real boy, has real things to say about David Lapham’s Silverfish and the film, Psycho II whilst Gary moans about superheroes in general. Douglas Noble comes along to talk about Pocket Chillers and Tarzan. Interesting to note that Douglas danced part of a 1980 Legs And Co routine continuously throughout recording. Of course, this is an audio-only presentation and doesn’t come accross when listening. Shame, he’s quite good. Maid Of Nails aka Kelly Kanayama sings some of her hits in between talk about Hellblazer: Royal Blood, Royalty, Amateur Demonology, Garth Ennis and A Walk Through Hell. Oh, and a Korean Drama which might be called Worlds Apart or something like that. Finally Tom Mortimer provides the weird, human cherry on top of this cocktail made from old, found booze which tastes surprisingly pleasant. I mean, this is mostly bullshit but there’s some stuff about Blue And Green, Severed and Skrull Kill Crew in there.

They are celebrating 50 years in business and Jimmy Buffet is still a client to this day------------------Check out www.howwegotloud.com for more details and other episodesSupport the podcast on PatreonGet your How We Got Loud swag at our online storeI want to thank Earthworks for sending me their new ICON podcasting microphone. Jump in now and hear Steve's journey in and out of the touring world along with some fun stories along the way.Check out www.howwegotloud.com for more details and other episodesSupport the podcast on PatreonGet your How We Got Loud swag at our online store I want to thank Earthworks for sending me their new ICON podcasting microphone. Fudge Tunnel special with David Ryley in conversation with David Eastaugh Fudge Tunnel's reputation was built around their massive guitar sound and ironic sense of humour, and were popular with the British music press - at least at first. The band's first release was "Single Of The Week" in NME magazine in January 1990, with NME declaring "Absolutely and totally the best single ever to be released in 1990. Total nine guitar attack-rock". The band undertook several European tours in 1991 and 1992 including support slots with Fugazi, Silverfish and The Jesus Lizard, as well as support slots with Swervedriver, Godflesh,[3] and regular performances at popular London venues The Camden Falcon and Camden Underworld. Two more albums were to follow in 1993 (Creep Diets) and 1994 (The Complicated Futility of Ignorance). Newport also was active with Nailbomb, a collaboration with Max Cavalera (Sepultura), who released one studio album and one live album of their Dynamo Open Air Festival performance. After the release of their third studio album, the band split up. David Ryley ran his label BGR Records for a while. Adrian Parkin played with Tubesurfer until 1996 when they too split up, and then returned to being a quantity surveyor in Bolton. Alex Newport went on to pursue a successful career as a producer/mixer and now lives and runs his own studio in New York. He has produced albums by At the Drive-In, The Mars Volta, Bloc Party, City And Colour, and many others. He also formed the band Theory of Ruin, who released one album, Counter Culture Nosebleed and the Frontline Poster Child EP, both on Escape Artist Records and currently is playing in Red Love with Matt Tong.

Today's episode begins with some light conversation regarding improv, cardboard, recycling and Christian/Catholic confirmations. Things take a turn however when the most philosophically challenging topic is drawn. Once the boys become bored with that - almost instantly - they move on to talk about the art of Mad Libs and World War Two (the one without the trenches). These damn boys just can’t stay on topic. Shambala Junction, a New Novel by Award-Winning Author Dipika Mukherjee, Launches in US The novel tackles the subject of international adoptions with humor and insight Chicago-based author Dipika Mukherjee won the Virginia Prize for Fiction, a UK literary prize, for her coming-of-age novel Shambala Junction. The novel is to be launched in the USA next month. Set in India, the story is about Iris, an American who is visiting India for the first time with her fiancé and not enjoying the trip. When she steps down from the train at Shambala Junction to buy a bottle of water, little does she know that her life will radically change. Stranded at the small town, she becomes involved in a local stall-holder’s battle to recover a lost child - one which is about to be sold to a rich Westerner. Along the way, she discovers not only herself - but friendship, courage and a love of India. Dipika Mukherjee's debut novel was long-listed for the Man Asian Literary Prize then published as Thunder Demon (Gyaana, 2011, South Asia) and Ode to Broken Things (Repeater, 2016). She has one short story collection, Rules of Desire (Fixi, 2015) which is a bestseller in Malaysia, and has edited three anthologies on Southeast Asian fiction: Champion Fellas(Word Works, 2016), Silverfish New Anthology 6 (Silverfish, 2006) and The Merlion and Hibiscus (Penguin, 2002). She won the 2014 Gayatri GaMarsh Memorial Award for Literary Excellence (USA) and the Platform Flash Fiction competition (India) in April 2009. She is Contributing Editor of Jaggery and curated an Asian/American Reading Series for the Guild Literary Complex, Chicago. She holds a doctorate in English (Sociolinguistics), has taught language and linguistics in several countries and is a Faculty Affiliate at the Buffett Institute for Global Studies Northwestern University. According to publisher Cheryl Robson: “This novel was the clear winner of the Virginia Prize for Fiction in 2016 from over 100 entries from around the world. It’s surprising for a novel to have such a light touch when dealing with the serious subject of child-trafficking, and the author manages to entertain us with the plight of the central character, a wealthy but naïve Asian American, who finds herself in the middle of a crisis, when the poor family who ‘adopt’ her have trouble regaining possession of their own baby.” Dipika Mukherjee says in an interview for Rumpus(http://therumpus.net/2017/01/the-sunday-rumpus-interview-with-dipika-mukherjee/) “Here’s the truth: We have a problem with the trafficking of female children in India. People should be – and some are – fighting it. The feticide numbers for girls are horrifying. Telling a human story, with individuals experiencing the effects of an actual political issue – that’s my part in shaking the ground.”

00:00:00 - Kelly tell us about the fascinating world of kleptoparasites, specifically silverfish that hide inside ant colonies with chemical mimicry. Patrick and Ryan interrupt. 00:14:55 - Drinks also use chemicals, and they hide inside your glass until attacking your mouth. Patrick picked Kona's Coffee Porter, he's been there before, and he'll go back again. Kelly also chooses an old favorite in Great Lake's Edmund Fitzgerald. And finally, Ryan has brought something back from the slopes of Park City with his glass of Bourye whiskey. 00:20:10 - The Paleopals bring aboard blogger and Tolkien scholar Juliana to help discuss this week's trailer: The Hobbit.
