Rehearsals are not parties. They can be fun and satisfying, but the bottom line is that rehearsals are work sessions. The Flood is always trying to learn new songs, and since that's where the songs are worked out, some rehearsals are just more fun than others. So the band usually try to end the evening on a high note. At one such rehearsal recently, Charlie Bowen asked if anybody had a tune in mind to end with. “How about something we know?” said Danny Cox with a chuckle and a grin. In a minute the band had rolled into the 1930s standard “Moonglow” and it turned into the best moment of the whole night. The Song HistoryAs reported here earlier, "Moonglow" was first recorded by Joe Venuti in 1933, with subsequent recordings by Benny Goodman and Ethel Waters.Penned by Eddie DeLange and Will Hudson, the tune has since become a jazz standard, performed and recorded numerous times by a wide array of musical talents. The Jazz Discography estimates that by 2016, the song had been recored 572 times, including in studio sessions, unreleased masters, live performances and radio transcriptions. For more about the song's creation and its history, click here.Finding Other TunesBy the way, if you have a specific tune you like to hear Floodified, drop by the Song Index on the band's web site. More than 700 weekly episodes of the Flood podcast since its launch in late 2008 are linked from there. On the page, you can browse the alphabetized list and click on the underlined date on the song you want to hear; then on the subsequent page, click on the title of the song and the audio will start.A few words about the Song Index's organization:* The first of the links with a specific tune is always the most recent performance, followed by earlier renditions. * Most of the links connect to audio, though some are to videos of performances, which are indicated with the *v designation. * Occasionally links lead to audio or video of multiple songs; in that case, a time designation (such as "08:22") indicates where your selected song begins.* Some songs also include a “Flood Watch” and/or a “Story” reference. Clicking either of those links takes you to further information about the tune, perhaps a Flood Watch newsletter article about the song's history or maybe just a brief comment or discussion about it recorded at a jam session, rehearsal or performance. Click here to reach the web site's Song Index. Enjoy! This is a public episode. If you would like to discuss this with other subscribers or get access to bonus episodes, visit 1937flood.substack.com

These are the twelve sides recorded by, I would argue, the greatest edition of the Fletcher Henderson Orchestra. In effect a swan song, these were recorded in the fall of 1934 for the brand new Decca label just before the band broke up in November, with Henderson moving on to begin his association with Benny Goodman before reforming his band in 1936. This group features solos from just about everyone except lead trumpet Russell Smith . .Irving Randolph and Red Allen on trumpets, Keg Johnson and Claude Jones on trombone, Hilton Jefferson, Russell Procope and for one number Benny Carter on alto sax, Ben Webster on tenor sax, Buster Bailey on clarinet, Fletcher and Horace Henderson on piano, Lawrence Lucie on guitar, Elmer James on bass and Walter Johnson on drums, with arrangements by the Hendersons, Carter, Russ Morgan and Will Hudson. The discussion was part of an event that took place at G . F Smith’s Showspace in London, to coincide with Malcolm’s exhibition Orgasm Addict Reframed. Raised in Cheshire, Malcolm grew up alongside fellow designers Peter Saville and Keith Breeden, who all simultaneously discovered graphic design as a career path during their school days. Studying in Manchester, Malcolm was still at college when he embarked on his love for punk culture and music. Becoming embedded the UK’s early punk scene, it was during his second year of college, in 1977, that he created a record sleeve for the Buzzcocks, serving to kick-start his career in design. His work for music continued, and later became his passport to London from Manchester, once he’d graduated. He speaks about how opportunities arose through relentless hard work and curiosity, and why he thinks you have make your own luck. ... This podcast series features creatives sharing what they do and how they got to where they are. Our guest this week is Franki Goodwin and was recorded in August 2017 at an event hosted by ADCAN. Franki has been a creative director at advertising agency Saatchi & Saatchi since 2013, alongside working as an executive producer at her own company Western Edge Pictures, a film production and development studio. Having graduated from Glasgow School of Art with a degree in visual communication in 1999, she soon found herself working in marketing for feature films – coming up with creative ways to build interest around new releases. Starting out at a time when creating a website was still considered something of a risk, Frankie has carved out a unique role in the industry, which has grown with the rise of online culture and marketing. Now heavily involved in the wider world of advertising, she talks to us about how her two roles complement each other, her experience of founding her own companies and where it all began.  See the full article here: https://lectureinprogress.com/journal/franki-goodwin The Lecture in Progress podcast is presented by Will Hudson, the guest was interviewed by Indi Davies and the producer was Ivor Manly. In recent years, the United Nations’ International Telecommunication Union has become an arena where governments promote rival visions of the future of the organization and, more importantly, how the Internet itself should be governed. These debates reflect a growing tension around a foundational question: to what extent can and should nation-states act to manage the flow of information within their sovereign territory? As the Internet’s importance as a driver for global economic and social growth has grown over the past decade, so too has the interest of some governments to secure for themselves a larger role in regulating the technical, economic, and policy aspects of its management. -- Governments are driven by a range of objectives as they consider the future of the Internet, including access and uptake, competition policy, privacy and security, and, in some cases, regime stability. Will it be possible to accommodate some governments’ desire for a more robust role and still maintain essential democratic principles such as the free flow of information between people around the world, universal human rights, and the core belief that has driven the Internet’s exponential growth over the past decade: that users, companies, and civil society – not governments – ought to control the Internet’s future? What are the political, economic, and geopolitical factors driving Internet regulation and policies? Umair Javed moderated a discussion with Will Hudson of Google, Sally Wentworth of the Internet Society, and Patricia Paoletta of Harris, Wiltshire & Grannis to explain recent activities at the UN to influence global Internet policy. -- Featuring: Will Hudson, Senior Advisor for International Policy, Google Inc.; Patricia J. Paoletta, Partner, Harris, Wiltshire & Grannis LLP; and Sally Wentworth, Vice President of Global Policy Development, Internet Society. Moderator: Umair Javed, Associate, Wiley Rein LLP.

This episode was recorded on 18 April 2016 and the guest was graphic designer Sarah Boris. Sarah has been in the industry for eleven years, and has run her own studio for the last one. This studio is limited to just her at present, to give her flexibility; currently, for instance, she is publishing her first book, among other design and screen-printing projects. Though she has been drawing all her life, she admits “I never thought I would go into design.” Initially drawn to sculpture, she was pushed towards design by a teacher on her Foundation course who saw her strengths lay elsewhere, and she ended up on a typography course, albeit one with enough flexibility that she worked extensively with various methodologies such as drawing and watercolour. This episode was presented by Will Hudson and the sound and music was produced by Zelig Sound.

Don W. Clark Jr. - Grady County ANR AgentThere is a relatively new pest that has had a major impact on Bermudagrass hay production in South Georgia and North Florida.  The Bermuda grass stem maggot, native to Southeast Asia was found in Tift, Pierce, and Jeff Davis counties in 2010.  I found it in Grady County in 2011, it was also found in many South Georgia and North Florida Counties in 2011 and 2012 as well.            If your Bermuda grass hay field looks like it has been damaged by frost in the middle of the growing season, you are probably experiencing damage from this insect.            The larval (maggot) stage of the BSM is what is causing the damage.  This maggot is inside the stem when the damage is done.  The adult fly lays its eggs on the Bermuda grass pseudostme (folded leaf blades).  Upon hatching, the larva works its way toward a node, where the leaf blade emerges from the stem.  As the larva develops, it feeds on the node.  This feeding results in the browning of the last one to three leaf blades.            In 2011 and 2012 I consulted with Dr. Dennis Hancock and Dr. Will Hudson for the purpose of setting up a test in an effort to find a control strategy.  Some observations we made were that BSM was much more common on small stem varieties like Alicia than large stem varieties like Tifton 85 and Coastcross.  Also we needed to control the adult fly because the maggot would be difficult to control protected by the stem.  I set up several tests in 2011 and 2012 in an effort to find an acceptable control strategy.  We used low rates of several pyrethroid’s and three different spray schedules.     My three growers used different spray schedules as follows:A.   Treated behind the baler (3 days after cutting) and again 7 days later.B.    Treated 7 days after cutting and again 7 days later.C.    Treated 5 days after cutting and again 10 days later. All three of my hay producer’s experienced similar control. Dr. Hancock, Dr. Hudson, and two graduate students are also continuing to work on control strategies for this pest.  Hopefully we will have more information on control of this pest very soon.   For more information check out this factsheet:  Biology and Management of Bermudagrass Stem Maggot.

Almost all designers must have heard of the It’s Nice That-blog, online since april 2007. We had a talk with co-founder Will Hudson, who started the blog as a personal visual bookmarking-space, because he was just bad with names. We think that’s a valid reason. Will’s partner Alex Bec joined in 2008, and since then the blog has grown into a company with a firm team of seven people art-directing, publishing and curating. We asked Will some spot-on questions about how they finance the blog, how they select and what’s new for the future. And he explains us why there are no comments allowed on the blog.
