He discusses the importance of data accessibility, trustworthiness, and usability, as well as the potential of generative AI to further democratize data access and insights.  This includes building a data community to facilitate knowledge sharing and learning, as well as providing tooling and guidance to business organizations to effectively roll out analytics within their domains.  AI's Impact and Collaboration (31:35): Ray explores the transformative impact of AI on businesses and its role in fostering tighter collaboration between business and technology teams. He discusses how AI is driving the need for reimagined workflows and how it's changing the way data is used and delivered across the organization.Key Quotes:“ThoughtSpot has been a key partner of ours on that journey. We just roll the data into the cloud, and we're working to publish our assets, sales, finance, loyalty, revenue, search, and marketing into that infrastructure so that there's just a growing base of information that everybody can use in the self-service context.” - Raymond Boyle"Velocity is something you build over time. It's how I think about the operating model around data, ensuring everyone plays their role and develops the necessary skills. To me, velocity increases as you establish the operating model and you have the business, technology, and data organizations, along with governance and security, all participating effectively. - Raymond Boyle"When you think about the business outcomes and how people are beginning to consider AI's potential in that transformation, I believe AI is becoming a more significant factor every quarter." - Raymond BoyleMentionsThe Four V's of Big Data, Including VelocityDalva, By Jim HarrisonMinnesota Timberwolves' SuccessGuest Bio Ray Boyle (current Vice President, Data and Analytics at Hyatt) has enjoyed a distinguished career spanning several industries and roles across consulting, software, analytics, and data leadership. Once you have your data stored in OneLake, you'll be ready to start transforming it to improve it's usability, accuracy, and efficiency.    In this episode of the podcast, Belinda Allen takes us on a delightful journey through Data Flows, Power Query, Azure Data Factory (Pipelines), and discusses the merits of shortcuts. We also learn about a handy way to manually upload a table if you have some static data you need to update.  There are many tools and techniques that can be used for data ingestion and transformations. And while some of these options we discuss will be up to individual preference, there are pros and cons to each. One of the blessings and curses of Fabric is that there are many ways of achieving the same result, so what you choose may depend on the nature of the data you have and your goals, but might also be dictated by personal experience.  We hope you enjoyed this conversation with Belinda on ingesting and transforming data in Microsoft Fabric. The Future of AI and Data in 2025:  There's a lot of excitement and prototyping around AI. "People are excited that they can ask questions and get real answers instead of getting the proverbial 10 blue links. I think people see the promise of things like that. How do you make that work at scale? How do you make that work in a reliable way, and how do you make it work in a way that's not expensive?" Ramaswamy shares a recent experience in India, describing the cost-consciousness of customers and the focus on making data accessible and valuable.Shifting Priorities for Snowflake Customers:  What do customers want? Ramaswamy identifies goals including empowering business users with data faster and unlocking the value of unstructured information. In response, Snowflake is helping customers access and utilize historical information and build hybrid systems. He notes that SQL enables easier data transformations and extractions.Cultural Change and AI Adoption: Cultural change is required for companies to handle AI. Even within Snowflake, adopting AI has been a challenging process. Snowflake's engineering and sales teams are beginning to use AI tools like Copilot and Cortex, but there's a need for ongoing practice to fully integrate AI into daily operations. The Promise of AI and Data Platforms: AI has the potential to free up significant time for employees, allowing them to focus on higher-value tasks. Snowflake aspires to make data platforms simple and accessible, allowing users to perform complex tasks with ease. Its consumption model has several benefits and aligns it with business goals of making more money or spending less. Companies like Siemens are using chatbots to improve efficiency and access to information.Competition and Innovation in the Data Market: Competition, Ramaswamy says, drives innovation and improves products. It only strengthens Snowflake, which stands apart due to its unified platform, tight integration, and ease of use. "If you create a chatbot with Snowflake, it will automatically obey all of the access control rules that you have set up. It will automatically obey all of the data masking that your administrator has set up." Ramaswamy discusses the challenges of balancing innovation with maintaining simplicity and efficiency in Snowflake's product offerings.Mega Trends and Challenges for Snowflake: Ramaswamy sees two mega trends for 2025: the rise of interoperable data formats and the acceleration of AI. Snowflake is well-positioned to take advantage of these trends through its end-to-end offerings and data engineering capabilities. However, there are challenges to maintaining data quality and speed while innovating rapidly. AI tools like agents must drive real utility and value for customers.Data Literacy Initiative: One Million Minds Plus One: Snowflake has a new initiative aimed at improving data literacy. Data can be difficult to interpret, and the right skills are necessary to do so. Snowflake is spearheading an ambitious program to educate over a million people in data literacy, free of charge. The initiative includes teaching concepts like data engineering, data analytics, and using BI tools and notebooks for interactive analysis.Excitement for 2025: Sridhar expresses excitement about the potential for AI and data to drive real business transformations in 2025. Snowflake will continue to play a vital role in helping customers become truly data-driven organizations. Navigating growth, competition, and innovation while maintaining simplicity and value for customers is key.

143: Danny Lambert: A guide to data transformation and building a warehouse-first martech stack

Humans of Martech

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 29, 2024 63:05

What's up everyone, today we have the pleasure of sitting down with Danny Lambert, Director of Marketing Operations at dbt Labs. Summary: Marketers often feel like they're battling a dragon when it comes to integrating data. We're overwhelmed by technical jargon, stuck with outdated methods, and facing roadblocks from data teams. Danny walks us through his journey of cautiously entering the data world and the role dbt can play for marketing teams. By learning just enough SQL, knowing what tools you need to get started with and leaning on dbt's tools, you can start small and gradually build a warehouse-first martech stack. The reward is more control over your data, flexibility to deploy personalized campaigns independently, and a competitive edge that no pre-packaged solution can match.About DanielDanny started his career at an event solutions company where he wore several different marketing hats including getting his first taste of marketing automation  He then worked in marketing ops at IZEA, at marketplace that connects brands with influencers before having a short stint at McGaw.io one of the leading martech and analytics agenciesHe then moved over to healtech at CareCloud where he led Demandgen and ABMHe then transitioned to Rev.com the popular transcription company where he started in marketing ops, then demand gen before being promoted to Director of Integrated MarketingAnd today Dan is Director of Marketing Operations at dbt Labs, the creators of the most popular software for data transformation used by data engineers at more than 20k companiesNavigating the Disconnect Between Marketers and Data TeamsMany marketers struggle to engage with data teams because they feel worlds apart. Danny points out that it's a lot like the early days of marketing's relationship with product teams. Before product-led growth (PLG) became a buzzword, marketers and product teams operated in separate silos. It took a concerted effort to break that wall, and the same shift is needed with data. Marketers often find the mechanics of data engineering and warehousing intimidating, and for good reason—they weren't trained for it. But it doesn't have to be that way.Danny recounts his time at CareCloud, where he was exposed to the concept of a data warehouse. The idea was gaining traction, and he attended a Snowflake event to grasp the essentials. After an hour of slides and schemas, he walked out just as confused as when he walked in. The issue wasn't the information; it was the delivery. Marketers need to see things in action. Theoretical talks don't cut it—practical, straightforward tutorials that walk you through the steps are what marketers crave. Installing tools like dbt and seeing data move can make it all click. It's the difference between hearing about a new tool and actually feeling it work in your hands. There's also a major gap in educational resources that cater to marketers. As Danny highlights, marketing professionals who want to embrace data often get lost in the flood of courses and jargon-heavy materials. It's a jungle out there—marketers want concise, actionable guidance, not a deep dive into tech theory. Without the right content, many opt to stay in their lane, using tools and methods they already know. It feels safer, especially when they're under pressure to perform quickly.Danny points out that this pressure to ramp up fast can discourage experimentation with a warehouse-first approach. New roles often come with tight timelines, and there's a tendency to lean on old habits. Shifting to something like data warehousing means slowing down, learning the ropes, and building enough belief in the new approach to back it up internally. But if you've spent years doing things differently, it's hard to develop the conviction needed to push for change. Confidence comes from exposure and understanding, but without that, the warehouse-first idea feels too foreign to champion.Key takeaway: Marketers often shy away from data teams because they lack practical, accessible education and feel pressured to stick with familiar methods. Building confidence through hands-on learning and real-world examples is crucial for integrating data and marketing in a meaningful way.Overcoming Barriers to Data Literacy in MarketingMany marketers hesitate to engage deeply with data, often because they don't see it as central to their roles. Danny explains that for most, data feels like a secondary tool—something meant to assist rather than dominate their day-to-day work. The challenge is that the pathway to becoming data-savvy isn't straightforward. Even among those who've made the leap, each person's journey looks different. Some take online courses, like those on Codecademy, learning SQL from scratch. Others find mentors who guide them through the maze of data management, or they happen to work in environments where they can lean on a data specialist nearby. But there's no universal roadmap, which makes the process feel daunting.Danny believes that the lack of a clear, predictable path to mastering data is one of the biggest hurdles marketers face. With so many options available—some technical, others more hands-on—marketers often struggle to identify which approach will actually get them the skills they need. For those with limited time, this uncertainty can be a dealbreaker. Without knowing if the investment will pay off, it's easier to focus on other areas of marketing that feel more familiar and essential. Danny points out that while resources like Udemy are improving the situation, marketers still need a straightforward, reliable way to become proficient in data.Another critical factor is the perceived opportunity cost. Marketers are often juggling multiple responsibilities, from staying up-to-date with industry trends to managing campaigns. For many, the idea of dedicating time to learning data—an area they may feel they have minimal expertise in—feels like too large a barrier. Why spend time learning about data warehousing when there are immediate, pressing marketing concepts to master? This fear of committing time and energy to an unfamiliar, complex area keeps many from taking the first step.Danny emphasizes that while the accessibility of learning tools is improving, there's still a significant gap. Even for those who want to upskill, the fear of the unknown and the lack of a guided pathway can make it feel like an insurmountable challenge. Until marketers can see a clear, accessible way to develop these skills, many will remain hesitant to dive into data, choosing to stick to familiar ground instead.Key takeaway: Marketers often shy away from learning data skills due to a lack of accessible, consistent learning paths and the fear of time investment without guaranteed outcomes. Creating structured, easy-to-follow resources is crucial to making data literacy a viable option for busy professionals.Unlocking the Full Potential of Data with dbtDanny describes the transformation dbt brings to the data landscape, making it accessible not just to engineers but also to marketing ops and other non-engineering teams. In the past, accessing and manipulating data was a highly specialized skill, often requiring a marketer to rely heavily on a single engineer. As Danny puts it, you needed to build a relationship with this “one person in a closet somewhere” to get any insight or change implemented. This old approach made data access exclusive, slow, and frustrating for teams trying to move fast. With dbt, Danny explains, the dynamics shift dramatically. It creates different roles and permission levels for everyone interacting with data, enabling a self-service model for marketers and operat...

To be clear, she was only representing her own views on the episode. Some key takeaways/thoughts from Nailya's point of view:When it came to microservices and digital transformation, we aligned our application and business architectures. Now, we have to align our application, business, and data architectures if we want to really move towards being data-driven.To do data transformation well, you must align it to your application architecture transformation. Otherwise, you have two things transforming simultaneously but not in conjunction. It's crucial to involve business counterparts in your data architectural transformation. They know the business architecture best and the data architecture is there to best serve the business. That is a prerequisite to enable continuous business value-generation from the transformation.Re a transformation, ask two simple questions to your stakeholders: What should this transformation enable? How should we enable it? It will give them a chance to share their pain points and their ideas on how to address them. The business stakeholders know their business problems better than the data people

To be clear, he was only representing his own views on the episode. Some key takeaways/thoughts from Stefan's point of view:No one has data mesh all figured out. Go talk to each other. But also don't be ashamed that you are running into challenges. So is everyone else. Data mesh implementers also need to share more of the anti-patterns they are finding.Agile transformation really focuses a lot on communication and transparency. Both are very crucial to really any successful transformation initiative. Humans struggle with uncertainty and change so giving them a lot of information especially about the why prevents unnecessary pushback. Relatedly, there are many things we can take from Agile transformation practices to apply to data/data mesh transformation. It's not a copy/paste but there's still much that is very relevant with some tweaks. Many organizations are still focusing on technology-led transformation, whether data or digital in general. You must also change the mindset and organizational approaches if you want to be successful. In banking, the rise of fintechs (financial technology companies) has made it clear that being nimble and quickly acting on data is crucial. Being data driven is required to remain competitive.Data mesh can mean far less friction in getting to serving use cases. Instead of fighting against the data protection office, they are involved from the start. That time to market is especially crucial in banking now.If you can, look to make your data sharing policies and approaches generic enough to only create friction when there truly is something different that should be examined further. If you really want to be 'data-driven', if you really want to be a data company, you have to find and address the friction points in your data processes. Stop trying to simply get better at processes that...

In our conversation, Nadia shared three key lessons from her 14-year tenure at Google: curiosity, authenticity, and aiming for big things. She believes that curiosity opens doors to new environments and genuine connections. Authenticity and vulnerability, she says, are the building blocks of trust. And aiming for the impossible? That's what drives her to tackle challenging projects. But it's not all about success. Nadia opened up about a recent experience of not getting a role she had prepared for. Nadia's story is a testament to the power of resilience and the beauty of turning setbacks into stepping stones. She believes that by fully putting herself out there, she is giving others permission to do the same. This approach to business, which she calls "business with grace," focuses not only on numbers and plans, but also on building a next generation of humans who find fulfillment in meaningful work. We also discussed the importance of being the CEO of your own career and taking charge of personal growth and development. Nadia emphasized the value of having a coach and engaging in daily practices like journaling and mindfulness meditation for self-awareness. To be clear, he was only representing his own views on the episode. Some key takeaways/thoughts from Benny's point of view:!Controversial!: As a data leader, if you want to be effective, you will have to focus much more on what role data work plays in the organization rather than the data work itself. It's about partnering and communication, not SQL and LLMs. That can be a hard lesson but it's crucial to being successful.?Controversial?: It's easy to try - and common to want - to separate data culture and organizational culture but it doesn't really work. "Data culture is … an aspect of your organizational culture that you're trying to build and create."A guidepost for your transformation journey: "If you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together."The data team can be leaders in transforming the organization but they must do it in collaboration, not just going out as pioneers 'to set an example' or something. Absolutely partner with your transformation org if you have one. When you align your data culture transformation to the overall organization transformation messaging, you aren't fighting for attention to a different message. Mike Gustafson is the President of Search Discovery, a data transformation company that helps organizations transform by executing data strategies to achieve desired business outcomes. As a leader and senior executive, he has experience leading professional services and technology teams. Mike has also created and implemented solutions for multiple industries including nonprofits, consumer products, and financial services. Before Search Discovery, he held various partner roles at Rosetta. In this episode… In the era of digital marketing and advertising, data privacy is a growing concern, and companies must recognize the implications of data collection to comply with emerging regulations. But a data privacy compliance survey of 300 businesses reveals that in some industries, approximately 93% of these companies lack restrictions around data collection. So how can you safeguard consumer data? According to data analytics expert Mike Gustafson, many organizations lack an adequate understanding of the data they've gathered. Acknowledging privacy regulations requires developing a proactive data collection strategy that addresses objectives for usage, variety, and management. Businesses should only gather relevant information to personalize and streamline the customer experience, so holistic privacy programs involving the entire organization are essential.  In this episode of She Said Privacy/He Said Security, Jodi and Justin Daniels chat with Mike Gustafson, President of Search Discovery, about transforming how corporations collect and utilize consumer data. Mike shares why companies should consider end-to-end data transformation, the challenges of data privacy compliance, and how companies respond to Google Analytics regulations.

dbt is known as being part of the Modern Data Stack for ELT processes. Being in the MDS, dbt Labs believes in having the best of breed for every part of the stack. Oftentimes folks are using an EL tool like Fivetran to pull data from the database into the warehouse, then using dbt to manage the transformations in the warehouse. Analysts can then build dashboards on top of that data, or execute tests. It's possible for an analyst to adapt this process for use with a microservice application using Apache Kafka® and the same method to pull batch data out of each and every database; however, in this episode, Amy Chen (Partner Engineering Manager, dbt Labs) tells Kris about a better way forward for analysts willing to adopt the streaming mindset: Reusable pipelines using dbt models that immediately pull events into the warehouse and materialize as views by default.dbt Labs is the company that makes and maintains dbt. dbt Core is the open-source data transformation framework that allows data teams to operate with software engineering's best practices. dbt Cloud is the fastest and most reliable way to deploy dbt. Inside the world of event streaming, there is a push to expand data access beyond the programmers writing the code, and towards everyone involved in the business. Over at dbt Labs they're attempting something of the reverse— to get data analysts to adopt the best practices of software engineers, and more recently, of streaming programmers. They're improving the process of building data pipelines while empowering businesses to bring more contributors into the analytics process, with an easy to deploy, easy to maintain platform. It offers version control to analysts who traditionally don't have access to git, along with the ability to easily automate testing, all in the same place. In this episode, Kris and Amy explore:How to revolutionize testing for analysts with two of dbt's core functionalitiesWhat streaming in a batch-based analytics world should look likeWhat can be done to improve workflowsHow to democratize access to data for everyone in the businessEPISODE LINKSLearn more about dbt labsAn Analytics Engineer's Guide to StreamingPanel discussion: If Streaming Is the Answer, Why Are We Still Doing Batch? All Current 2022 sessions and slidesWatch the video version of this podcastKris Jenkins' TwitterStreaming Audio Playlist Join the Confluent CommunityLearn more with Kafka tutorials, resources, and guides at Confluent DeveloperLive demo: Intro to Event-Driven Microservices with ConfluentUse PODCAST100 to get an additional $100 of free Confluent Cloud usage (details)
