A remarkable story with a remarkable artist. The kind of illustrator who walks into danger to tell people's stories through the power of his art.George Butler is an award-winning illustrator but has reinvented the role of the Artist Reporter drawing conflict zones, climate issues, humanitarian crisis and social issues for the news. His drawings are done in situ - in pen, ink and watercolour. In August 2012 George walked from Turkey across the border into Syria, where as a guest of the rebel Free Syrian Army, he drew the Civil War-damaged, small and empty town of Azaz.  A decade later he spent several days in the Metro in Kharkiv, Ukraine recording the lives of those that lived underground to avoid the Russian bombardment. These drawings can be seen in the National Archive at the V&A Museum.Over the last 15 years George has been commissioned to offer a deliberately slow alternative to the headlines. He attaches his drawings to the personal testimonies of those that he meets and records their resolve and resilience alongside the vulnerability of their situations. This has included in a Leprosy Clinic in Nepal, a militia in Yemen, the Mass Graves in Bucha, a caesarean-section in Afghanistan, the artisanal oil fields of Myanmar and most recently for the Guardian documenting the aftermath of the Earthquake in Turkey and Syria."We seem to have lost the art of the observational reporter with a sketchbook to photography, Butler's memorable images show that a closely observed drawing is not just worth a thousand words but hundreds of photographs." John George Butler is an 87-year-old British author, YouTuber, and retired farmer who resides in Derbyshire. Known for writing multiple books detailing his experiences with meditation and spirituality, he gained his insights through international travel and study. I am thrilled to announce that our new book, the Kindness Daily Reader: Season One, will be available from July 1, 2024. Secondly, we are embarking on a new chapter with Season Three of the One Kind Moment podcast. In Season One, we primarily focused on broad topics of kindness and compassion, while in Season Two, we explored areas such as self-compassion, self-help, and self-care. Now, in Season Three, we're shifting our focus to a specific area of self-care that we call Practical Spirituality for Everyone. We'll be delving into topics like spirituality in nature, spiritual intelligence, everyday mindfulness, the science of consciousness, the mystery of life, the science of awe, and managing uncertainty. We're excited to take this new direction and are grateful for your continued support and interest in the One Kind Moment podcast. #onekindmoment #practicalspirituality Yesterday by John Hobart - Music Design by Jason Inc. https://brucewaynemclellan.com/

“In Ukraine, I learnt that the stories of those I was trying to draw, were in fact, far more significant than my attempts at figurative likeness on the page. The drawings became an introduction to something and someone more meaningful that we would have otherwise never known”.George Butler is an award-winning illustrator who has reinvented the role of the Artist Reporter, drawing conflict zones, climate issues, humanitarian crisis, and social issues for the news.  His drawings are done in situ - in pen, ink, and watercolour.Over the last 15 years, George has been commissioned to offer a deliberately slow alternative to the headlines.  He attaches his drawings to the personal testimonies of those that he meets and records their resolve and resilience alongside the vulnerability of their situations. This has included in a leprosy clinic in Nepal, a militia in Yemen, the mass graves in Bucha, a caesarean-section in Afghanistan, the oil fields of Myanmar and the aftermath of the earthquake in Turkey and Syria.  At the RSA, George introduces his latest work Ukraine: Remember Also Me - a collection of vivid and powerful testimonies from the conflict in Ukraine. While reporting on the war, George created striking and intimate illustrations to introduce the people behind the headlines. His drawings, made in a variety of places - from people and animals in underground shelters in the Kharkiv metro, to hospitals and bombed out streets and homes - vividly capture stories of family, tragedy, and perseverance. These powerful portraits of war and conflict are a timely reminder of the humanity we all share and our universal need for peace.#RSACourageBecome an RSA Events sponsor: https://utm.guru/udI9xDonate to The RSA: https://utm.guru/udNNBFollow RSA Events on Instagram: https://instagram.com/rsa_events/Follow the RSA on Twitter: https://twitter.com/RSAEventsLike RSA Events on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/rsaeventsofficialListen to RSA Events podcasts: https://bit.ly/35EyQYUJoin our Fellowship: https://www.thersa.org/fellowship/join

War Reportage and Stories of Migration with artist George Butler

Visualising War and Peace

In this week's episode, Alice interviews award-winning artist George Butler. George's art covers a huge range of topics, but he specialises in current affairs and his visual reportage from conflict zones like Iraq, Afghanistan and Syria has won plaudits from the likes of Jeremy Bowen and Michael Morpurgo. George's work often takes him to places which other people are trying to leave. In August 2012, for example, he walked from Turkey across the border into Syria where, as a guest of the Free Syrian Army, he set about drawing the impacts of the civil war on people and towns. Over the last decade he has been to refugee camps in Bekaa Valley (Lebanon), oil fields in Azerbaijan, to Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Myanmar, Mosul, and to Gaza with Oxfam, among many other places. His drawings have been published by the Times, the New York Times, the Guardian, BBC, CNN, Der Speigel, and a host of other media outlets; and they have also been exhibited at the Imperial War Museum North and the V&A museum, among other places. George has also recently published a book, Drawn Across Borders: True Stories of Migration, which tackles one of the many ripple effects of conflict and shines a spotlight on some of the humans behind the headlines. In the podcast, we talk about drawing as a dynamic process: one in which the artist invests time, and during which the people being drawn might come and go, shift position or mood, fade into the background or come into focus. George's drawings capture the rhythm of a place over several hours, enabling him to convey a context and set of experiences that are less easily observed through the fast shutter speed of a camera lens. Another aspect of drawing that George relishes is how approachable and unthreatening an artist often seems. While a cameraman's equipment might act as a barrier, a simple pad and pencil often gets people coming closer to look and ask questions, sparking conversations. Drawing on location involves listening to many different people and the stories they want to share; and what George hears then finds its way into the drawings as they develop. George reflects on the combination of aesthetics and storytelling in his reportage. While he strives to make his art beautiful, he sees little point in an attractive image which is not telling an interesting story – one that uncovers less visible, ignored or forgotten aspects of a conflict. One thing that motivates his work is the desire to round out our habits of visualising contemporary wars. We discuss the push and pull of media organisations and NGOs, who sometimes want an artist to focus on particular aspects of a conflict, and also the challenges that artists and photographers often face in deciding what is appropriate to depict in any given context. George clearly sees his drawings as fulfilling a documentary role, setting down a record for the future; but he is also interested in myth-busting, especially around migration, and his book Drawn Across Borders has been described as ‘a work of art, compassion and activism.'We hope you enjoy the episode! A blog with some of the images we discuss is available here, and more  images are available on George's website. In this episode of the SneakyArt Podcast, I spoke with British artist George Butler, who makes ink/watercolor drawings of people in conflict-zones and refugee camps all over the world. His latest book (Drawn Across Borders) tells the migration stories of 12 individuals, compiled from travels over the past decade. Modern reasons for migration, legal or otherwise, include political upheaval, civil strife, proxy wars, and, increasingly, climate change. But human migration, he argues, is a basic feature of human existence, and has been so for hundreds of thousands of years. In this respect, George and I talk about the importance of sharing individual stories. I ask him about drawing scenes that are not conventionally pretty, and whether it is possible to find art in such environments. This leads to a deeper discussion about the power of illustration - what the artist puts into it and what the viewer derives from it - and thus the broader purpose of what we call art. - Follow George Butler on Instagram or visit his website to see his other work. - To support my work, buy me a coffee. Lou went on to play lead rolls in over 20 films and TV shows including Hercules, Sinbad and the King of Queens. But, Lou will always be known best for his roll as the Incredible Hulk.  Recording this episode was a bit of a challenge. If you notice less than stellar audio, there's a reason: Lou is deaf. He uses a combination of lip reading and hearing aids to be able to communicate. He can use a telephone because his hearing aids have a Blue Tooth connection to his cell phone, which enables him to hear his cell phone through his hearing aids. So, we had to rely on the old telephone to conduct this remote interview.  While the audio is a little less than par, the interview itself more than makes up for it. We know you'll enjoy it!

How Important Is Getting a Pump for Building Muscle?

If you’ve read anything about bodybuilding, you’ve probably heard about something called “the pump.” In a nutshell, this refers to the temporary increase in muscle size that occurs when you lift weights. Bodybuilders have been strangely obsessed with this phenomenon since people started lifting weights, and according to many, it’s the cheat code for unlocking rapid muscle growth. George Butler and Charles Gaines, authors of Pumping Iron: The Art and Sport of Bodybuilding, claimed getting a muscle pump, “feels like one of those fast-frame films of flowers blooming or seeds ripening; the muscles seem actually to go from pod to blossom in seconds under the skin.” This explanation reveals one of the main reasons weightlifters like getting a pump: it’s a visible sign your efforts in the gym are paying off. Your muscles are getting bigger before your eyes! This preoccupation with the pump hasn’t waned, either. You’ll still find articles touting the benefits of “chasing the pump”—bodybuilder lingo for doing lots of reps with short rest periods until your muscles are swollen and sore. Others counter that chasing the pump is a fool’s errand. Temporary muscle swelling has nothing to do with muscle growth, and your time is better spent getting as strong as possible, they say. So, who’s right? In this podcast, you’re going to learn what the pump is, what causes it, why people think it’s important, why it isn’t essential for muscle growth, and why it’s still worth doing some “pump” training in your workouts to get the best results. Let’s get started! --- 6:20 - What is the pump? 8:23 - What is pump training and is it good for building muscle and strength? 17:31 - How can I program pump training? --- Mentioned on The Show: Shop Legion Supplements Here: https://legionathletics.com/shop/ --- Want to get my best advice on how to gain muscle and strength and lose fat faster? I always write down little things the kids say that strike me as funny or  sweet. Here's a little blast from my past on this day in 2010: At bedtime tonight, PJ told me he wanted to bring cold lunch to school.  I told him no because we have paid for hot lunch.  (Apparently many kids in his class bring cold lunch.)  I told him that they probably bring cold lunch because they have allergies and their mommies don't want them to get sick. So, then PJ told me he had allergies too... he said "I'm allergic to pumpkins".   I said "really."   He said yes.   I said "Well then you won't have fun on Halloween because there are pumpkins all over that night".   LONG PAUSE while his jaw drops.  Heavy sigh. "You caught me mom.  I was just trying to trick you." Pumpkin allergies... at the time I thought that was a made-up thing. While this story is super sweet, there are folks who are actually allergic to pumpkin. Typically, they are allergic to the seeds. That said, other parts of the pumpkin can negatively effect the body. People with allergies who touch the pulp or the seeds can get dermatitis or even hives. If they smell pumpkin cooking, sensitive people can have an allergic response from the vapors. And, kids with pumpkin allergy can feel sick just from carving a pumpkin. Uninformed parents can easily dismiss coughing and wheezing during pumpkin carving time as signs of a cold. Thanks to Starbucks and other retailers, our society goes a little crazy for all things Pumpkin Spice this time of year - the Pumpkin Spice Latte actually has a little pumpkin puree in it. But just know, there is such a thing as pumpkin allergy and be sensitive to folks have it.       Brevities   #OTD  Today is the anniversary of the death of the botanist Luis Nee who died on this day in 1807. Luis Née was a Frenchman living in Spain. He worked at the Madrid botanic garden and he botanized in the mountain ranges of Spain. Nee went on an expedition to South America in 1789. When he collected in Chile, he discovered the Lapageria rosea which is now the national flower of Chile. Lapageria rosea plants, are also known as Chilean bellflowers. They are named after the Empress Josephine Lapagerie, wife of Napoleon Bonaparte.     #OTD   Today is the birthday of the German botanist, Frederick Lueders, who was born on this day in 1813. On November 13, 1843 Lueders was botanizing along the Columbia river in Oregon. He'd been collecting specimens for three years. He had just encountered the explorer John Freemont, when all of his work, which was secured in a canoe nearby, was drawn into the rapids. Lueders plunged into the river and managed to retrieve only a copy of the Flora by Torrey and Gray. The devastating loss was recorded in Freemont's journal who wrote: "In the natural concern I felt for his misfortune, I gave to the little cove the name of Lueders' Bay." For Lueders part, the loss of his specimens was devastating. However the loss of his instruments and his correspondence with Asa Gray and Dr. Englemann was almost too great. Lueders  determined his best course of action was to return home. He traveled south around the tip of Chile and then onto England. It took him a year to return to Hamburg a year after his mishap on the Columbia. Lueders didn't stay in Germany long. In fact,  he returned to America within the next year. By 1851, he had made his way to Wisconsin; he spent the rest of his life in Sauk City and he dabbled in astronomy.  A biographical sketch said that in his old age, Lueders was devoted largely to his flowers.         #OTD  On this day in 1807, the botanist Frederick Pursch visited David Hosack. Hosack was happy to have Pursch collect specimens from all around the United States for him. He wrote, "I shall have a very industrious and skillful botanist [begin] to collect from different parts of the Union."       #OTD  On this day in 1856 John Torrey's Office at the Mint was described in the NY Daily Times. When Torrey was 57, he made the decision to leave Princeton after 24 years of teaching botany and he went to work for the Mint; it would be the last step in his long career. The description of the room where the bullion was measured is quite fascinating. It said: "During the process of ... gold and silver are... weighed on ... scales. Floors are covered with iron gratings which are removed at stated periods, flooring beneath carefully swept and particles of precious metal separated from the dust." Torrey 's quality of life improved while he worked at the Mint; he could leave work by 3pm and be home in time to work in his herbarium a couple of hours before dinner.     #OTD On this day in 1883, Charles Sprague Sargent  wrote to Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker with an update on the Arnold Arboretum: “The Arboretum is getting on at last. ..Roads, belts, grades, etc. are making grand progress & I really begin to see daylight ahead. We have in the nurseries an immense stock of plants &certainly the largest number of living species ever collected togetheron this side of the ocean.” ’        Unearthed Words   From the Poetical Birthday Book for October 3rd, from 1887: "Her lips like foxgloves, pink and pale, Went sighing like an autumn gale; Yet, When the sunlight passed by, They opened out with half a sigh. Her smile, the last faint vesper light As swoons the eve to sleep away, Remaining through the summer night A lamp of love by which to pray. ~ Meta Orred, English Author & Poet All will pass like smoke of white apple trees Seized by the gold of autumn. I will no longer be young. ~ Sergei Yesenin, Russian lyric poet, born on this day in 1895 In moral philosophy, it is useful, I believe, to think about plants." ~ Philippa Foot, philosopher, born (1920) and died (2010) on this day.     Today's book recommendation: Montrose by Nancy Goodwin This book was the obvious selection for today because it was published on this day back in 2005. It's one of personal favorites. Montrose is Goodwin's personal biography of her garden and I love everything about it. I love the illustrations; beautiful line drawings with pastel coloring. Absolutely gorgeous. I love that Goodwin organizes her book by month. I thought I'd read you an excerpt from her chapter on October... You can get used copies using the Amazon link in todays Show Notes for just $4.     Today's Garden Chore It's time to stop watering your Christmas Cactus. Put your cactus through a mandatory dry spell for the next 30 days for better bud set. So, don't water it until the first week in November. Here's a few other tips to help you with your  Christmas Cactus: They will blossom longer if they are exposed to only cooler temperatures. For best results, keep your Christmas cactus in a cool place - not by the fireplace and not by a drafty door. They like to be on a sunny windowsill. They need sleep. Like poinsettia, they benefit from 14 hours of darkness each night. They don't like to be watered very often - but they do like a little mist every day. Ok then.     Something Sweet  Reviving the little botanic spark in your heart   #OTD Today is the anniversary of the death of George Dexter Butler who died on this day in 1910. Butler was born in 1850 in Grundy County,  Illinois. He grew up in Iowa. Like many, he ended  up going West California.  In 1896, he was admitted the bar in California and then he began the practice of law. And, then, here's the part from the Madrono Vol. 1, No. 13 from November, 1928, that got my attention: "George Butler's passion for botany had always been such that he did not dare trust it. Therefore, on coming to California he determined to let the science of botany entirely alone. If he gave himself to it at all he feared that his proper profession as a lawyer would be largely or too much neglected and that his first obligation, the support and education of his family, would suffer. [When his old friend, Dr. Engelmann wrote him]  he was much puzzled in mind as to what he should do... The letter, therefore, he deliberately ignored. In 1906 he chanced to be in a bookshop in Oakland where his eye caught sight of a second-hand copy of Jepson's Flora." The time for botany had come. He quickly made up for lost time and he went collecting in every direction. He built a herbarium on his property, he started buying floras, and he worked like crazy on building his collections. What he was really hoping to do was to build a county herbarium. But, sadly, on this day in 1910, Butler had a stroke and passed away. After Butler died, his herbarium was given as a gift to the University of California. At the time, it was regarded as the most complete flora of Siskiyou County.      Thanks for listening to the daily gardener, and remember: "For a happy, healthy life, garden every day."
