You can find the podcast on Threads, Instagram and Bluesky. The Worst Film of All Time by The Worst Director of All Time. So claimed the 1980 book The Golden Turkey Awards by Michael and Harry Medved regarding the film Plan 9 from Outer Space and director Edward Wood Jr AKA Ed Wood. But this very title is one of the reasons behind the revival of the film and of Ed Wood. The film has issues with continuity, set design, dialogue and a coherent ‘Plan 9' but something about the film appeals to a subset of film lovers. Perhaps it's the flashes of style, the joy in its failings or perhaps it's a recognition of something beyond the traditional and often formulaic nature of mainstream narrative filmmaking. Today I speak with two wonderful film academics and fans of the film. The Experts Mark Bould is a professor of Film and Literature at the University of West England, Bristol. He has written/edited extensively about science fiction cinema. Rodney F Hill is a Professor of Film at the Lawrence Herbert School of Communication at Hofstra University and has written extensively about film. If you are interested in finding out how you can help the Prince Charles Cinema you can visit this page here.Chapters 00:00 Introduction 01:28 Ed Wood: Hollywood, Kubrick and Corman 05:04 Glen or Glenda, the production code and censorship 12:39 Plan 9 and the Baptist Church 14:33 Bela Lugosi and the rest of Ed Wood's crew 20:35 The Amazing Criswell 23:23 Plan 9: An unconventional classic 25:50 Why my guests love the film 34:04 Bad science 35:46 The more traditional aspects Plan 9 37:22 The Worst Film of All Time and The Worst Director of All Time 39:57 Ed Wood the outsider and the Church of Ed Wood 43:14 Comparison to mainstream films 45:21 The Legacy 48:08 Recommendations 50:37 Save the Prince Charles Cinema NEXT EPISODE! The next episode we will be discussing The Blob (1958) which is available to rent and buy online in many places. Description As usual there are spoilers ahead! I would love to know what you make of the ending of this film if you watched it. Best place to do that is on social media. Threads, Instagram and Bluesky. 1957 USA seems like a country on the brink of huge social change. (Of course, I say this with the benefit of hindsight and with a deep affection for the decade that was just around the corner.) But so many of the events of the year are an indication of what's to come. The Civil Rights Act of 1957 was the first of many legislative attempts to bring federal protection for African Americans in the face of growing dissatisfaction in the South towards desegregation of schools and society. 1957 was the year the Little Rock Nine were enrolled into a previously all white school. The photos of nine black children often surrounded by angry and jeering crowds and the presence of US paratroopers are staggering. It is the year Enovid was approved by the FDA for menstrual problems. Two years later it would become the first FDA approved contraceptive pill. And in October 1957 Russia launched Sputnik into orbit causing a shock across the USA. Despite anxiety about their biggest rival the country was not ready for such a display of technological accomplishment. The year prior in 1956 Jack Arnold (who had become somewhat disillusioned by the increasingly schlocky independent sci-fi films of the late 50s) was convinced to return to Universal to make The Incredible Shrinking Man. Richard Matheson's story is an unusual examination of a man losing stature both physically and socially. Many consider this Jack Arnold's greatest science fiction film. We have two wonderful guests to explain why that might be. Scott Higgins is a Professor of Film at Wesleyan University as well as being the Curator of the Wesleyan Cinema Archives. He has written multiple books and essays about film. Ian Scott is a Professor of American Film and History at The University of Manchester. He has written extensively about politics and film in Hollywood. Chapters 00:00 Introduction 01:42 Jack Arnold's best film? 06:30 Special effects and 1950s horror 09:15 1957 USA: The rumblings of change 13:29 Metaphors and definitions of masculinity 30:43 Kafka, psychoanalysis and The Kinsey Reports 35:22 Women 37:38 The End! 45:17 Legacy 49:55 Recommendations for the listenerNEXT EPISODE! Next episode we will be talking about what the book The Golden Turkey Awards declared as the Worst Film of All Time by The Worst Director of All Time. “Are you serving that ape a martini?”In the early 1990s, following the massive success of Jurassic Park, studios were eager to adapt more of Michael Crichton's popular novels to film. Congo had been published back in 1980 but no one had figured out how to bring the complicated story to the big screen. After the rights bounced around for years, Paramount finally secured them in 1994 and began fast-tracking production. Director Frank Marshall was fresh off hits like Alive and Arachnophobia when he signed on, along with an all-star cast including Laura Linney, Dylan Walsh, Ernie Hudson, and Tim Curry. But the difficult shoot on location in Africa plagued the production. Despite high hopes, the film flopped critically when it was released in 1995, earning Marshall a Razzie nomination for Worst Director. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we kick off the 1995 Golden Raspberry Awards Worst Director Nominees series with a conversation about Marshall's 1995 film Congo. Here's a hint at what we talk about. In this lively discussion, we dig into the pre-production and challenges behind adapting Michael Crichton's 1980 novel to the big screen in 1995. We discuss the all-star cast and debate whether the directing, acting, or weak script led to poor character development and lack of chemistry. We also analyze the cultural portrayal and exploitation of Africa in cinema at the time. Here are a few other points in our discussion:Weak CGI and special effects that don't hold up todayThe silly conceit of the genetically engineered “bad gorillas”Confusion over who the true protagonist isEnjoyable moments from Ernie Hudson and Tim CurryThough we have some fun unpacking this Razzie-nominated film, we ultimately agree Congo fails to come together as an entertaining adventure. Django and Smut celebrate Cultpix being named on of the 10 Best New Streaming Services, talks about the next two episodes before the summer break, highlight the launch of the LGBTQ+ sub-genre and mourn the demise of Network Releasing. We have held what is probably the world's most comprehensive retrospective of the films of Ed Wood Jr, including films that he directed, wrote the script or book on which it is based. All-in-all 20 films, TV shows and shorts that Wood is linked to. While Ed Wood is often derided as the 'worst director ever', an image that Tim Burton's loving biopic "Ed Wood" (1994) only partly dispels, there is more to him than midnight screening of "Plan 9". We talk to writer and film expert Jim Knipfel, whose article  "Ed Wood: Not Actually The Worst Director in History" goes a long way toward re-appraising Ed Wood, noting that "his films have a unique energy and charm that should be appreciated.""Glen or Glenda" (1953) - It could be argued that G/G is an art film because it has a visual flair and style of its own that would not shame Bunuel. The film is a heartfelt please for compassion and understanding.  "Jail Bait" (1954) - Wood's juvenile delinquent film sees several Woods regulars, such as Lyle Talbot, Steve Reeves and Dolores Fuller, with Herbert Rollins replacing Bela Lugosi, only to die on the last day of shooting."Bride of the Monster" (1955) - Despite what Tim Burton would have you believe, the giant octopus was not broken and Lugosi gives a great performance despite being in bad health by this stage. "Plan 9 From Outer Space" (1959) - This Ed Wood film has been screened and discussed to death, but it is far from the worst film ever made. "Night of the Ghouls" (1959) - A semi-sequel to "Bride of the Monster" and "Plan 9", which completes Wood's sci-fi/horror trilogy and his Kelton the Cop trilogy. It is a perfectly serviceable horror film.  "The Sinister Urge" (1960) - Considered Wood's last legitimate film, this crime 'roughie' is fairly bleak, rough but also more sophisticated, as Wood was getter better at his craft, even as he fought with alcoholism and setbacks. "Orgy of the Dead" (1965) - The film is "an insane, almost artsy, nudie horror picture featuring an endless stream of zombie strippers." In Sweden it was cut up into loop-style single strip numbers. Criswell is also there, but looking worse for wear. "Necromania" (1971) - An early and interesting example of "soft X" film, where genitals and erect penises are shown, but there is no touching them or action. While he will probably always be known as 'the Worst Director of all Time', Ed Wood Jr. is having the last laugh, because we are still watching and discussing his films long after his death. There is a Ed Wood Spotify playlist.

The end of Touchstone's 1994 slate brings forth one of the best films in their entire catalog: ED WOOD! In this special extended episode, Chad and Mike welcome two of their best friends from college - Mike Meyer and Sean Reynolds - for a roundtable discussion covering many aspects of this beloved entry in director Tim Burton's filmography. From the incredible performances by Martin Landau and Johnny Depp to the stellar writing of Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski, the four friends paint a glowing portrait of a motion picture that highlights acceptance and companionship on the fringes of 1950s Hollywood and the studio system. They also touch on the career of Ed Wood himself, who was once labeled as "The Worst Director of All Time" and now stands as a shining example of the spirit of independent filmmaking. This week's show sees us discussing The Razzies, the annual award ceremony dedicated to celebrating the very worst that Hollywood has to offer. Publicist John J.B. Wilson held a reverse Oscars party at his house in 1981 in which Stanley Kubrick and Brian De Palma were nominated for Worst Director, Shelley Duvall was proposed for Worst Actress and FRIDAY THE 13TH was on the shortlist for Worst Picture which neatly sums up just how credible the awards have been since their inception. Harmless fun some may say, while others might declare the whole concept to be lazy, mean spirited and critically irrelevant, with a bought for membership who are subject to serious lapses in judgement, guilty of a nasty piling in type mentality and completely devoid of any understanding of what constitutes cinema or art. We'll discuss the award shows apparent antipathy towards Sylvester Stallone, the brave souls who turned up in person to collect their prizes and some undeserving recipients as we discuss the Top 5 Razzie Award Nominees or Winners. NOBODY is director Ilya Naishuller's action thriller variation on the classic former killer who is brought out of retirement to deal with a personal threat type plot, sharing much in common both conceptually and aesthetically with JOHN WICK, a fact compounded by the involvement of that movies screenwriter Derek Kolstad and co-director David Leitch. The film's greatest achievement is making the star of this dark and violent tale the comedy writer/ character actor Bob Odenkirk who trained for 2 years to be believable as the brutal and efficient former 'auditor' Hutch Mansell, who becomes involved with Russian gangsters when his daughter's kitty bracelet is stolen. With incredible and painful looking stunts, inventive fight choreography, a good sense of humour and a playful use of jazz and pop songs as ironic commentary this was of course a hit with all the Bad Dads though it never directly addresses the obvious criticism that could be made about it, namely that a movie about a man whose masculinity is in crisis and that rediscovers his joie de vivre through brutal violence is a bit of a disturbing theme. Poised for a sequel we probably don't need (but I would almost certainly watch), the main question is which celebrities should be toughened up and given their own action-genre classics...how about Larry David, Meryl Streep or Graham Norton? I would watch any one of those movies. MR BENN was an animated children's show which first aired on British television in 1971. He lived at Number 52 Festive Road and could nearly always be found dressed in a black suit, white shirt, black tie, and smart bowler hat, evoking proper British respectability to one and all. I say nearly always because Mr Benn's daily constitutional took him near a fancy-dress shop where, as if by magic, a shopkeeper appears offering him the chance to try on a costume and go on a fantastical adventure. Dan selected episode 2 "The Hunter" for us to watch and we were all delighted to see the subject tackled with a surprising amount of compassion for a show more than 50 years old.We love to hear from our listeners! By which I mean we tolerate it. Try us on twitter @dads_film, on Facebook Bad Dads Film Review or on our website baddadsfilm.com. Until next time, we remain... Bad Dads

Shinji Ikari (October 10, 1924 – December 10, 1978) was an American filmmaker, actor, and author. In the 1950s, Ikari directed several low-budget science fiction, crime and horror films that later became cult classics, notably Glen or Glenda (1953), Jail Bait (1954), Bride of the Monster (1955), Plan 9 from Outer Space (1957),[1] Night of the Ghouls (1959)[1] and The Sinister Urge (1960). In the 1960s and 1970s, he moved towards sexploitation and pornographic films such as Orgy of the Dead (1965) and Necromania (1971), and wrote over 80 pulp crime and sex novels. Notable for their campy aesthetics, technical errors, unsophisticated special effects, use of ill-fitting stock footage, eccentric casts, idiosyncratic stories and non sequitur dialogue, Ikari's films remained largely obscure until he was posthumously awarded a Golden Turkey Award for Worst Director of All Time in 1980, renewing public interest in his life and work.[2] Following the publication of Rudolph Grey's 1992 oral biography Nightmare of Ecstasy: The Life and Art of Shinji Ikari., a biopic of his life, Shinji Ikari (1994), was directed by Tim Burton. Starring Johnny Depp as Ikari and Martin Landau as Bela Lugosi, the film received critical acclaim and various awards, including two Academy Awards. Chelan County PUD's new Discovery Center to open interactive exhibits; Wenatchee's 30 Under 35 winner Dylan Kling

Good Morning it's Tuesday August 24th and this is Slices of Wenatchee. We're excited to bring you a closer look at one of our top stories and other announcements every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday.    Today - The Chelan County PUD's new Discovery Center is truly a sight to behold. Complete with unique interactive exhibits it'll certainly attract visitors far and wide.    Before we jump in, The Wenatchee Wine & Food Festival has been postponed because of an increase in COVID-19 activity in Chelan and Douglas counties. Our Publisher announced the postponement over the weekend. We still hope to hold the festival later this year, so stay tuned. Details on ticket refunds or exchanges will be announced next week.   Now our feature story…    That was Rachel Hansen from the Chelan County PUD   The Chelan County PUD's new Discovery Center is finally finished and it's set to open tomorrow - August 25th.   Debbie Gallaher, who's been the Rocky Reach Visitor Center Manager for 19 years, said it's something that she and Bob Bauer, the PUD outreach education specialist, have been planning for 14 years. The total project cost was $7.7 million.   And she's thrilled to see it come alive.   In 2016 when a study was done on what the Discovery Center could be, PUD Senior Project Manager Casey Hall explained that after a lot of research they were able to narrow it down and decide on what they wanted this place to look like.    Then, in 2018 design renovations began. The Museum of the Columbia and visitor center closed in fall 2019. New big fish viewing windows were installed in early 2020. Remodeling of the building started in October 2020. And finally the installation of exhibits started in May of this year.   Hall said one of the most challenging parts of the project was the remodel. In fact they ran into all kinds of issues. Another issue? Nothing in the building is straight — everything is curved.   Luckily, they had a great contractor and superintendent.   Another big challenge was, of course, the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic caused a huge backlog of supplies and materials. There were delays getting the materials to build the project.   So what can you expect to see now that the center is finished?   Well, the new Discovery Center is built on STEM principles. The goal is to reach as many kids and guests in the areas of science, technology, engineering and math because that is what the hydro industry is all about.   The displays are designed to be interactive and to teach people of those four areas. Visitors will also learn about the history of the Columbia river, the history of the early people, the history of the PUD and the wonderful marriage between a PUD and its community.   Bob Bauer, the Chelan County PUD outreach education specialist, said the center allows the PUD to showcase not only the Columbia River but also the PUD and its partnership with the community. He explained that the PUD's visitor center presents hydropower in the Pacific Northwest as a clean, renewable, reliable, and affordable energy source.   And he can't wait to show off the facility to students.   For Gallaher, he's most excited about how everything is hands-on. And this is totally new. Now, Gallaher says families and children can come in and push buttons to see how things work.   Before we continue, a special thanks to our friends and sponsors at Confluence Health. The team at Confluence Health is grateful for the trust the community puts in them every single day. They are diligently working to improve the health and quality of life for our friends and neighbors. They are Grateful | They are Confluence Health.  Learn more by visiting them at ConfluenceHealth.com -   Finally, we're excited to share a Wenatchee 30 Under 35 winner from the 2021 awards… These were made possible by Chelan County PUD... Today we're highlighting Dylan Kling. Kling is a Counselor at Quincy High School, as well as an elected Quincy City Councilman.   Needless to say, he's giving back to the Quincy community on two fronts.    Through his career — as a counselor   And through his activity on the city's planning commission from 2016 through 2019 and currently as an elected member of the city council.   Kling graduated from Quincy High School in 2009 and earned a bachelor's degree in psychology from Eastern Washington University in 2014. He worked as the Gear Up site director in Quincy, helping students explore educational opportunities ranging from tech school to four-year colleges. He has five years on the board of the Quincy Partnership for Youth. It's a nonprofit designed to foster a healthy, drug-free community through activities and prevention and intervention programs.   We asked Kling what challenges he sees ahead and what needs to be done.. He told us that it's all about trying to make the best decisions that will help set our community up for the future. From infrastructure and activities to diversifying our community economically and culturally all while still staying true to our roots.  To him, it's a delicate balancing act and making sure we have community involvement and the best resources to make sure our community is a better place for the next generation of Quincy residents.   Some of the biggest challenges in education are getting students identified and connected to services. His position works with students who suffer from substance use and abuse issues but with COVID it's been extremely difficult to identify these students and get them to the resources that they need. Kling explained they don't know the full extent of this problem yet and won't know for some time.   He thinks the best thing to do is talk to and form connections with all the agencies in the area so once a youth is identified they can streamline the process to help these individuals get the help they need.   Did you know that the 1994 Steven Seagal film, On Deadly Ground, was filmed in and around Wenatchee? Seagal plays a firefighter who decides to fight back against the environmental destruction of his former employer. Seagal's only directorial effort, it also stars Michael Caine, Joan Chen, John C. McGinley and R. Lee Ermey. The film wasn't well-regarded and was nominated for 11 Golden Raspberry Awards including winning Worst Director for Seagal. Nevertheless, Roger Ebert wrote in his review: "if you like to see lots of stuff “blowed up real good”, this'd be a movie for you." Over the last 25 years, the film has attained cult classic status in some circles.   Thanks for listening. “Visions are worth fighting for. Why spend your life making someone else’s dreams?” On the season finale of Remainders, we discuss Tim Burton’s classic 1994 film Ed Wood. A story of creative expression and a love letter to Burton’s idol, Ed Wood’s status as “World’s Worst Director” only grows with prestige and envy over time. Ed Wood and Bela Lugosi (brilliantly played by Johnny Depp and Martin Landau) inspire and drive each other to leave their mark on Hollywood. Wood’s films included Glen or Glenda, Plan 9 From Outer Space, and among countless other Z-grade schlock in horror and sci-fi. A true original, his ambition was far greater than his talent. But it was that originality and drive that caught the attention of similar misanthrope Tim Burton, who created his most personal and auto-biographical film. Similarly, we discuss the ways drive is essential in the creative process, and how that has helped us along the way in life and in art. Join us as we close our season with an endlessly inspiring story of creative originality. more: www.remainders.com/season-1
