Super Bowl 55 is in the books and it was a dud. Bucs dominate 31-9 and Brady gets his remarkable 7th championship. Is it Patriot way or Brady way? Chiefs surprisingly inept and Mahomes was running for his life all game. How was the entertainment? Woke and Illuminati as usual. Boring and predictable. Russell Wilson makes his displeasure known with his protection issues in Seattle...is he tired of seeing first round picks wasted? Matt Campbell inks new deal at Iowa State. Blockbuster Matt Stafford trade deal. Rams acquire Stafford in exchange for Goff, 2 first rounders, and a third.
Super Bowl 55 matcup is set as the Buccaneers will be the first franchise to host a Super Bowl vs the Kansas City Chiefs. It will be a bout consisting of 2 QBs on opposite ends of the spectrum, young dynamic Mahomes and the G.O.A.T. Tom Brady. Matt LeFleur's call to kick a FG instead of go for the TD late in the game would be closely scrutinized. Rodgers of course, does the usual great job of making thinly veiled passive aggressive comments. Chiefs defeat young upstart Bills and Josh Allen. Buffalo's lack of running game finally came back to bite them. A spicy array of well-timed blitzed by coach Spagnuola would fluster Allen as he kept running backwards losing yards as opposed to stepping up in the pocket. Vols land a new AD Danny White, formerly of UCF and why not just bring along Josh Heupel. No one else is really interested in the gig with the NCAA looming large. LSU lands an impressive DC in former Vikings secondary coach Darante Jones, who has a history with former Tigers DC Dave Aranda.
It's all down to Bill-Chiefs, and the Battle of the Bays, Green Bay hosts Tampa Bay. AFC young guns Mahomes and Jackson suffer concussions and miss the remaining of their games. Steve Sarkisian, soon to leave for Austin, TX, called a great game scheming his stars open and no one could stop DaVonta Smith except his injured finger. Jaylon Waddle also was on the field early from his ankle injury and was noticeably gimpy still. Kudos to the young man for toughing it out. Brows shock the world with their coach, Kevin Stefanski, at home due to having COVID. Bills make statement over banged up Steelers.
Cam's not the guy anymore and Pats need to go in a different direction. Stidham doesn't appear to be the guy either. Pats will win less than 10 games in forever. They're still doing too much Tom Brady stuff on offense. N'Keal Harry is starting to get it, though. Saints roll with defense. Philly gives Jalen Hurts a spin. Stafford leads Lions comeback over Bears despite injured thumb and still no Kenny Goliday. Giants shock Seahawks. Steelers lose first game. 72 Dolphins can pop a top. SEC commish Greg Sankey raises questions about the ACC's cancelling games to possibly protect a Clemson-Notre Dame championship. Weather affecting a few teams' play and delaying Texans-Browns. Nick Chubb returns and makes his presence felt in a big way. Raiders are doing in their way, bringing in tough guys with street brawler mentalities. Bears continue to have same problems on offense despite Nagy giving up play-calling duties. They don't even bother with screen passes when faced with blitzes. Stumbling Seahawks need to wake up as Russell Wilson gets sloppy but his margin for error was always zero with this defense. Don't look now but the Pats are back from the dead again with a victory vs a Baltimore team looking for answers. LB Chase Winowich, LB Josh Uche, S Kyle Duggar and cbJC Jackson lead the youngsters on D.
Bama - LSU postponed due to limited roster availability due to COVID. LSU is thankful their butt-whoopin will be delayed a bit. Notre Dame takes down Clemson in double OT in instant classic. TAMU torches S Carolina. UF outlasts Georgia as Trask continues to play great. UGA has questions on offense particularly at QB. Indiana continues magical start, beating Penn St and now Michigan. Ohio State lets up in the 2nd half vs former staff Greg Schiano's Rutgers squad. Saints dismantle Brady and the Bucs in Tampa. The defense played phenomenally and Brees is his best when hitting multiple targets. TE Adam Trautman scored his first TD. Dalvin Cook continues to run wild for Vikings. CMC returns in Panthers' valiant effort vs Chiefs. Jets make MNF interesting vs Pats and almost blow the chance to draft Trevor Lawrence. Chargers blow a lead yet again. Giants beat Washington. Tua impresses vs Cardinals.
COVID running amok in NFL and at Wisconsin for the Badgers. Trade deadline comes and goes with only a few minor deals. Niners are basically a JV team of zombies with their injury situation. LSU embarrasses itself getting completed trashed by Auburn. Bo Pelini's second stint is not impressive at all. Ed O will need to fix this like with the Matt Canada OC misfire. Bama blows out Miss St and Mike Leach, the supposed offensive guru. Florida and Mizzou have a brawl and Dan Mullen gets involved unwisely and then dresses up for post-game press. Chargers blow a lead again, Saints overcome Bears as Brees and Brady trade all time NFL passing TD record lead. Colts destroy Lions with better running game and immaculate Rivers. Green Bay's porous run D shows up again. Bills cause Cam fumble to seal the deal. Chiefs dismiss Jets. Several ugly NFL games due to weather conditions. NFC Least is just lousy
Big 10 back in action but already having to cancel Wisc vs Neb. Freshman QB Graham Mertz phenomenal vs Illinois. Ohio St takes Nebraska 52-17. Michigan over Minnesota. Indiana with a thrilling yet controversial win over Penn St. PSU learned a similar hard lesson as Atlanta Falcons; that scoring a TD with too much time left on the board can bite you in the ass. Bama loses Jaylen Waddle in win @ Vols. Saints defeat Panthers and former NOLA favorite Teddy Bridgewater...even without Michael Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders. Trades are happening and might we see more? Carlos Dunlap to the Seahawks. Bucs sign AB to loaded offense. Ravens acquire Yannick Ngakwae from Vikes and sign Dez to practice squad. Cowboys continue to stink it up. Brady has the upper hand currently in the Brady vs Belicheck greatness discussion. Cam benched. Broncos struggle on offense as Chiefs take advantage of their mistakes.
LSU vs UF delayed until Dec 12 as SEC shows same flexibility NFL has with the pandemic. Arkansas is impressive already in its turnaround getting the win vs Ole Miss and Lane Kiffin. Bama overcomes UGA as Saban remains undefeated vs his pupils. Mac Jones is playing very well. Miss St continues its tailspin as defenses figure out how to defend the Mike Leach Air Raid with dropping defenders into zone. Kentucky impressive as TN falters, predictably at the QB position. Just start Harrison Bailey and get it over with. Titans and Texans were the most entertaining game of the NFL slate with Derrick Henry earning that new contract. Tannehill playing well with Arthur Smith at OC. Steelers assert a familiar dominance in their division as they dominate the Browns. Colts comeback over the Bengals with a nice performance by Phillip Rivers. Dallas Cowboys are a mess as players who aren't getting it done on the field with their mistakes call out the coaching. That model doesn't work where the owner is the face of the org and the HC is not. Joe Judge gets first win with NYG although it was pretty much a gift from Riverboat Ron. Tua gets on the field and is now named starter for Phins
Dak gets seriously injured and needs surgery for the Cowboys. In comes Andy Dalton. LSU's defense embarrasses itself once again vs Mizzou. Saban gets by Lane Kiffin's Ole Miss team, but gets COVID before facing off vs Georgia. This whole year needs one big asterick. Saints win vs Chargers largely due to the Bolts' kicker. Justin Herbert is an impressive rookie. Chase Claypool goes berzerk in a breakout game for Pittsburgh. Raiders upset the Chiefs. Jimmy G not quite ready yet. Alex Smith back on the field for the Washington team, Titans look great despite limited practice opportunities. OU comes out victorious in the Red River Rivalry. TAMU beats Florida. Foles beats Brady again as Tom has trouble keeping track of his downs. Browns continue their steady play and keep winning. Atlanta finally fires Dan Quinn and GM Thomas Dimitroff. Texans pick up a win with Romeo Crenell at the helm as interim.
OU and Texas get upset behind the usual bad defense. LSU rebounds vs Vandy. Ole Miss in an exciting OT win vs Kentucky. I'm so sick of seeing dumbass players celebrating before crossing the goal line. Georgia beats Auburn to a pulp. Bengals pick up their first win and Joe Burrow says winning is fun. Lions blow another lead to the Saints. Houston fires Bill O'Brien. Bill Belichek's defensive master game plan is for naught as his offense can't do anything without having Cam Newton at their disposal. COVID disrupts games in Titans-Steelers (postponed)and Chiefs-Pats (moved)
SEC opens play and Mike Leach has already announced his presence to a stubborn LSU defense that would not or couldn't change or mix it up. Competitive arrogance? Someone has and at some point will expose Mike Leach and his limitations. But for now, it's quite entertaining having Leach and Lane Kiffin in the SEC! Kyle Trask has an awesome day for Florida and could he be the next Joe Burrow? Tennessee knocks off South Carolina. Texas needs OT to beat Tex Tech and once again K State upset OU. Once again, playing defense is merely a suggestion in the Big 12. Green Bay beats the Saints although Kamara showed out. Jets and Giants together can field maybe a third of a pro team? Lions finally get a W. Bengals need to call more run plays and maintain balance or Burrow just might die out there. Does Doug Pederson need to limit Wentz's options in the passing game? Bears finally pull plug on Trubisky but Tarik Cohen tears ACL. Seahawks get the win thanks to a call-up unsung hero in the secondary. Titans roll on to 3 straight wins before a small COVID outbreak. Falcons continue to spiral out of control
Week 2 action review and its Sunday Bloody Sunday with superstars going down left and right to injury. 49ers in particular hit hard with Bosa and Thomas being carted off in action vs the Jets. Saquon Barkley and Christian McCaffrey also lost as were Anthony Barr and Parris Campbell. Brees and the Saints look inept and sloppy vs the Raiders. Darren Waller and Josh Jacobs helped Derek Carr and Jon Gruden lift the Riaders to the victory in their shiny new Vegas stadium. Pac 12 now opening play Nov 6 and will have a 6 game season. They'll be eligible for playoff consideration but we don't need to be concerned with that. LOL. Big time Ohio State players are returning after initially declaring as BIG 10 approves fall play. Purdue Rondale Moore returning also. Packers look good with Aaron and Aaron leading the way. Josh Allen enjoying new target Stephon Diggs. Chiefs escape Chargers D and rookie Justin Herbert. Coach Lynn shouldve went for it on 4th down in OT. Titans go to 2-0 despite Derrick Henry not getting going yet. Rookie Joe Burrow throws over 60 passes in the Ohio duel against Baker, O'dell and the Browns. Lions blow another lead yet again. Vikings aren't playing the way they need to to win. Defense is lacking and offense is not designed to play from behind and score quickly.
NFL week 1 wrap-up. Brady can't lead Bucs past a Superdome minefield and throws 2 picks in the process. Michael Thomas endures the dreaded high ankle sprain. Eagles continue to fall left and right with injuries. Should they look at their training staff? Giants have noted improvements but fall to Steelers and a nervous Big Ben. Benny Snell impresses. Fitztragic is in effect again as Phins go down to Cam and his new Pats buddies. #Chaingate2. Aaron Rodgers is pissed and thats good for the Pack. They demolish the Vikes. Mr Unlimited Russell Wilson has the chains taken off and just puts on a clinic against the Falcons D.
Chiefs - Texans recap. The Champs were patient, methodical and efficient in the victory over Houston. DaShaun Watson was harassed by KC's pass rush and miss having DeAndre Hopkins to move the chains. The BIG 10 will re-vote on having a fall season that possibly starts Oct. 17 and this is great news for Ohio State, who had the most to lose. Upsets already as FSU falls to Ga Tech and their young revamped offense, UL Ragin Cajuns defeat a ranked Iowa St team and Ark St takes down K-State. Clemson handles WF easily and North Carolina finally gets its offense going in the fourth quarter to best Syracuse. Notre Dame's RB Kyrenn Williams has himself a day to help put away Duke with Clemson transfer Chase Brice @ QB under David Cutcliffe.
Jadeveon Clowney, the mercenary, finally settles on a team in the Tennessee Titans for 1 year 15 million. Is he in shape? He must just not like training camp. LOL. Saints made a hard push for Clowney involving a creative experiment ultimately nixed by the league. A team believed to be the Browns would've paid some of Clowney's bonus or salary in exchange for a second round pick. It was a very interesting sign-and-trade proposal. Leonard Fournette and Josh Rosen will now be wearing Buccaneers jersey this season. Fournette could steal some goal-line touches for you fantasy owners. DeAndre Hopkins, Cam Heyward, DeShaun Watson, Tre White all get extension from their respective teams. Cards WR corps looks much improved as they even release last year's big WR from Iowa State Hakeem Butler, who the Jets def should kick the tires on with the Denzel Mims injury. Indy finds a kicker to replace future HOFer Adam Vinitieri and extend their center to continue to field a solid O-line. Cam Newton named started for Pats and a team captain.
Nebraska players sue BIG 10 who then issue a formal vote of 11-3 for postponing the season. Perhaps facing pressure, trial balloon floated of starting the season at about Thanksgiving time. Uh, like right after the election? Is this political? LSU losing Jamar Chase, Kary Vincent and DT Tyler Shelvin as these players opt out to prepare for the 2021 draft. Injuries mount as NFL camps open. Eagles especially hit hard along the offensive line. Andre Dillard, LT tears bicep and Eagles may have to move Jason Peters back there instead of playing him at RG to replace Brandon Brooks. TE Dallas Goedert sustained injury to thumb but should return before long. Giants sign Logan Ryan to shore up secondary and defense. Jags trade Yannick Ngakoue to Vikings for 2nd and conditional 5th. Yannick took less money this year to simply get out. Now paired with Danielle Hunter, that Vikes D is a scary prospect to face for QBs. Jags surprisingly cut Leonard Fournette after failing to find a trade partner. Teams knew that Jags would probably cut him and were perhaps taking advantage of a somewhat saturated RB logjam in the NFL. Jags all in for Trevor Lawrence. Texans give ILB Zach Cunningham 4 year 58 million dollar deal. They now need to lock up their franchise QB DeShaun Watson. Baltimore has enough of Earl Thomas and his antics. Leadership council votes to get rid of him after fight with fellow S Chuck Clark in practice. Thomas evidently blew an assignment. This comes after a turbulent offseason for Thomas as his wife and he were in an altercation surrounding actions Thomas took of perhaps a sexual nature with his brother and another woman.
Continued BIG 10 fallout as players, parents rise up with letter and petitions to play or at least be afforded the opportunity to make their own choices. Now Penn St AD hints that there was not a concrete vote taken. It's a complete sh*tshow. SEC schedule drops. Arch Manning, grandson of Archie and Cooper Manning's son, is expected to be a big 2023 recruit and is already being offered by some big time programs. Niners have problems at WR and need Brandon Aiyuk to have a great rookie season. Maybe he can considering what Kyle Shanahan did with Deebo Samuel. Jalen Hurd suffers another injury, a torn ACL, after last season was lost due to back injury. The guy just may not be cut out for football. Gerald McCoy, the Cowboys' main free agent acquisition for their defense has torn his quad and will need season-ending surgery. Bills lock up their young ascending left tackle, Dion Dawkins and the Packers do the same with DT Kenny Clark.
More detail on BIG 10 and PAC 12 postponements...AAC, Sun Belt, and Conference USA are moving forward with football as well as BIG 12, SEC, and ACC as of now. NCAA has been lackluster in leading during this time. NFL TE market gets reset with George Kittle deal. Chiefs Jason Kelce to follow. Background on Kittle and his rise to best TE in the league. Dallas signs DE Everson Griffen and their roster looks stacked on paper. Will that O-line get it done? Alvin Kamara focused on the upcoming season and not a new contract right now.
67ish total opt outs for the NFL's upcoming 2020 season which is not a large amount considering the league's 2144 players on rosters and practice squads. Recently, Marcus Gilbert RT for the Cardinals and RT former TN Vol Ju'wuan James opted out hurting the Bronco's line. Drew Lock sure could've used him this season but he has had some availability issues with the injury bug biting a few times. The MAC is the first (and hopefully only but not likely) FBS conference to cancel fall sports, which is a bit premature and drastic I find. The BIG 10 has made overtures to the rest of the power 5 conferences about canceling as well. I hope not as we really need something other than China's boot-licking pet NBA players to watch. While Rondale Moore WR Purdue, VaTech cb Caleb Farley have opted out, Minnesota WR Bateman and Penn St Micah Parsons are the lasted to say "goodbye and see you at the draft".
First NCAA player opts out of 2020 season. VT's talented Caleb Farley announced his decision in an emotional video. Around 40 NFL players have opted out thus far, including Chiefs RB Damien Williams, Pats Donta' Hightower, Jets' CJ Mosley among others. Dwayne "the Rock" Johnson teams with ex-wife and another group to purchase the XFL. Spring football may have a better chance of succeeding and NCAA and NFL both mulled that option earlier we were told during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic. ND joins ACC conference at least for this season and the SEC joins other big conferences in keeping a conference-only schedule. This could be great for SEC fans watching better quality games. Antonio Brown gets clarity from NFL on where he stands, Eagles coach Doug Pederson tests positive, Pat Mahomes becomes part-KC Royals owner, Saints sign former Eagles LB Nigel Bradham for depth, and Drew Brees and his wife continue their amazing charitable giving to the Louisiana area.
Huge blockbuster trade with S Jamal Adams leaving NY Jets for the Seahawks. Jets come away with S Bradley McDougal, two first rd picks, and a third. Seahawks get elite former LSU safety and a fourth. Pete Carroll gets a replacement for Earl Thomas in his defense and the Jets get some ammo either to restock multiple positions or package extra picks to move up for elite draft talent. NFLPA and NFL agree to CBA amendments prior to opening camps after players take to twitter under the #WeWanttoPlay. Faceshields produced by Oakley are recommended, not required. There is no preseason. Minnesota Vikings extend HC Mike Zimmer after some solid seasons, appearing in postseason action. Washington just goes with Washington Football Team as its name following the exit of its previous logo and mascot. Will they just go with numbers on the helmet like Alabama. QB Alex Smith cleared to practice after an excruciating journey including 17 surgeries. WR Kelvin Harmon tears ACL. Also, sexual harassment allegations further cloud the culture surrounding Washington. Cowboys hype is picking up but we're concerned about the offensive line holding up. Much to prove coming into the season. Can they protect so Dak can find all these weapons? A look at LSU TE Arik Gilbert and Alabama's latest stud DT recruit, Damon Payne.
Mahomes' big new contract...highest ever in NFL history... Washington Redskins moving on from current name and logo after relentless attack, this time involving money via sponsorship...maybe Snyder should just sell while he's at it. Oakley developing some sort of face shield that covers nose and mouth of players. NFL says players to stay 6 fee apart post-game. Will there or won't there be a season? Ivy League and Patriot leagues shut down fall sports. Big 10 says no out-of-conferences games will be played. This doesn't make much sense. UGA has a decision to make at QB after JT Daniels granted eligibility. We highlight LSU transfer LB Jabril Cox formerly of North Dakota State.
Cam to the Pats (on surprise) a team friendly deal that does not deep them from using the franchise tag on him next season. They probably wouldn't have the cap room anyway, but theyll probably at least get the 3rd round comp pick to make up for their Bengals sideline video punishment. There was some criticism of the deal by Richard Sherman and some other players, but Cam has already made quite a bit of money at this point and is more about respect and the comeback. Dak Prescott signs his franchise tender offer. Dallas has until July 15 to get a long term deal with him done. NFL to play black national anthem in addition to Star Spangled Banner? More wokeness as Redskins are again bullied and targeted by the corporate white guilt crown. Interesting to see if Dan Snyder maintains his steel spine with money being involved. Nike stops selling Redskins apparel? But they still employ slave labor so... Brett Favre compares Colon Humperstink, I mean Colin Stalinwink to Pat Tillman...and backtracks once he gets pushback. LSU gets a big Michigan OT recruit for 2021 but lose Marcel Brooks to transfer portal. It appears to be a case of just being homesick as he is from Texas.
Football preseason is on the cusp despite the pandemic and riots in the streets. Is football more likely to start and then not finish than not happen at all? Many programs report increased positives, albeit asymptomatic. Big impactul injuries including Brandon Brooks of the Eagles, he's one of the best in the NFL. Dr. Fauci says football will likely have to take place in a bubble...Carson Wentz may need to be in a bubble with Brooks in the lineup. Where do the Eagles go for a replacement? Rosters have been expanded and so have the practice squads. This is a much needed adaptation in the current situation. Deebo Samuel has a foot fracture. He will be out for at least the beginning of the season. Are the Niners prepared to step up and endure this huge setback? Will Kittle face more attention from defenses and is Jalen Hurd ready to step up after a wasted season due to injury? The Saints' Michael Thomas, while the typical WR diva, is very charitable and we highlight some of the contributions he's made. Retired Carolina LB Luke Kueckly joins the team in a pro-scouting capacity. No doubt he loves the game and his wisdom should come in handy with young defenders. Jamal Adams, the outstanding safety for the Jets, formally asks for a trade. The LSU alum is accustomed to a winning culture, but he doesn't have much leverage other than becoming a huge pain in the butt, which also could turn off suitors... Chuba Hubbard rouses up a mob against his coach for a t-shirt worn on a fishing trip. Is this the Twilight Zone? I would've kicked his butt off the team, but that's just me. More capitulation and bending over is the order of the day for demanding SJWs whose brains have been filled with woke mush. USC ends its 10 year dissociation from Heisman winning RB Reggie Bush. Now is a great time for his return, further boosting an uptick in recruiting in Troy.
While the NFL and NCAA football mostly escape COVID pandemic impact thus far, Colin Kaepernick and anthem protest could come back to haunt again as the country is caught up in racial unrest and division. Drew Brees and Vic Fangio are shamed and made to walk back initial comments by those demanding incantations and public shows of atonement. Police brutality is a very real topic, and how the conversation affects the upcoming season remains unclear. Carlos Hyde signs with Seahawks, a very smart move considering injuries at the RB position. What would the Browns defense look like if they could sway Clowney to the mix? They've put in the highest offer thus far. Chase Young could have a tremendous rookie outing similar to Jevon Kearse considering the talent around him in DC. Could Antonio Brown be coming back? He's training with Deion Sanders and catching passes from Dwayne Haskins. College football HOF damaged slightly in Atlanta riots. SEC coaching giants Pat Dye and Johnny Majors pass away. Bama has five asymptomatic players test positive for COVID 19.
NFL tables (ditches) expanded Rooney Rule but lifts some restrictions on hiring from other teams, removing necessary permission. Tony Dungy, Marvin Lewis, Louis Riddick, and Anthony Lynn were critical of enticing minority hires by dangling draft picks or improved draft slotting. Meanwhile, where are the white defensive backs? Want to facilitate passing offense? Get more white DBs in there. LOL. Bills' Ed Oliver arrested for DUI...Jamal Adams wants a new deal or a trade...DJ Jones preparing for larger role in San Fran with D Buckner gone. Jets' backup QB situation much improved by bringing in Joe Flacco on 1 year deal. Steelers' backup QB situation is still a worry however, but Big Ben finally shaves as he is once again throwing. Would you rather see a 4th and 15 attempt from a team's own 25 rather than an onside kick attempt? Cam's little brother following in his footsteps by transferring to Auburn as a preferred walk-on. Some returning NCAA players to keep an eye on this upcoming season.
The Michael Jordan docuseries on ESPN has been compelling with the latest interview excerpts leaving me admiring MJ more when he talks about winning having a price. NFL was doing well until the most recent hair-brained affirmative action idea of enticing teams to hire more minority coaches and GMs with higher or extra draft picks. Wokecenter @ 11pm. Saints cut G Larry Warford as expected saving some cap room that they need to re-sign Taysom Hill and sign Jameis Winston. The 0-line should be one of the quicker ones in the NFL. James Harrison goes on a podcast and talk about Mike Tomlin handing him an "envelope" after Harrison was fined for a hit. It had many in the media comparing it to the Saints bountygate. Jags sign cell phone tower Mike Glennon to back up Minshew... LSU dismisses a linebacker from the team at a time when they need to replace so much departed talent. And...who is Myles Brennan and what is his resume? And we review TNs outstanding 2021 haul thus far. Florida governor welcomes other teams to use the states' facilities. Oh and btw, I hate the term "new normal". Shove it before I throat-punch ya"
NFL Schedule is out and Bucs are no surprise in prime time 5 times. Some new stadiums set to open. No international games this season. NFL quietly confident season will start on time due to increase in COVID testing but are still planning contingencies, which is smart. We lose an NFL legend in coach Don Shula, who passed away at 90. He's a multiple Super Bowl winner and the only coach to ever post an undefeated season. Cowboys sign QB Andy Dalton. This improves their backup situation and may improve their leverage just a bit in negotiations with starter Dak Prescott. With Dak not participating in offseason program while frachise tagged, Dalton can run the team through drills. He's had a decent career starting out the gate as a former 2nd round pick. A preview of the Saints' undrafted free agent class...and they sign Jameis Winston on the cheap. It's a good partnership for the 2 parties as they aren't paying him a ton and he can try to improve his QB skills. Who got their fifth year options picked up and who didn't. Mahomes, DeShaun Watson, TJ Watt, Lattimore and Ryan Ramcyzk picked up no surprise there. Jeremy Pruitt kicking ass on the recruiting trail for the Vols' 2021 class and USC makes a comeback with some recruiting staff changes. NCAA advances the ball toward players getting compensated by third parties for the NIL (Name, Image, & Likeness)
Huge NFL draft recap! The NFL had a very successful virtual draft with record ratings and we as sports fans all needed that! The presentation I thought was more intimate and preferable to a big production. We did not see blockbuster trades early and things fell largely as mocked. LSU has big night with 5 players in the first round and 14 players picked overall. The SEC had a record 15 picks go in the first round. Ohio State also represented well and the first 3 picks all at one time or another played for the Buckeyes. Packers shock trading up for Jordan Love, Aaron Rodgers' eventual replacement! A deep WR class and they don't bother taking any of them. They also reach for between the tackles runner AJ Dillon. Saints tap Michigan C Cesar Ruiz, who was regarded as the top interior offensive lineman in the draft. They value a strong O line esp up the middle with the shorter Brees. Zack Baun, LB, Wisconsin also fell a bit and the Saints trade up to grab him for the defense. AFC West opponents for the Chiefs try to match their firepower. Drew Lock now has Jerry Jeudy, speedy KJ Hamler and teammate TE Albert O in the house to help spread defenses out. Raiders stick to very mature players for big time programs as they nab Ruggs and reach for Damon Arnette, the other cb from Ohio State. Tanner Muse, S, of Clemson is also selected. Dallas, Baltimore, Raiders, Broncos, Minnesota, Arizona, Cincinnati, Carolina all performed very well in most scouting circles. Saints didn't need much and went with quality over quantity addressing interior O line, LB, and TE. Rumor has it they are also negotiating with QB Jameis Winston as a backup/project
Merry NFL Draft Eve! Even if it is a toned down virtual shelter in place draft...coverage by NFL network, ABC, ESPN...A dry run went ahead with a few glitches here and there but smoothed out later on. WNBA just performed theirs and it seemed to work out nicely for the most part. Back in the day, there were a couple of team reps at a table that used landline phones and wrote names on cards. Surely, we can get this done. Gridiron Heights is a very entertaining NFL cartoon on BleacherReport so check it out along with JoeyMulinaro's Nick Saban impersonation. He depicts Saban setting up his email account and it's hilarious. I give you guys a listen up front after the intro. Gronk is back and rejoins his boy, TB12 in Tampa. What does the current 24/7 WWE title belt holder have left? Is he likely to do more blocking than pass-catching? Bucs should address offensive line anyway. Yannick Ngakoue and Jags co-owner Tony Khan have a delicious public twitter fight. The talented DE is getting impatient wanted to get out of town. Khan wants value but shouldn't wait too long to offload a malcontent. It's not really a new regime and I thought that was the weakest part of his response. Is RB Leonard Fournette also on the trading block? Dolphins are doing a good job of getting teams to believe they really like Justin Herbert maybe more than Tua. It is a draft full of risks and the Phins may afford to take some with three 1st rounders in their possession. Bucs, Browns, Pats and Chargers update their uniforms. Some changes are welcome, others are more debatable. JT Daniels enters the transfer portal, NC puts together the #2 ranked 2021 class according to 247 Sports. Could they offer some competition in the ACC to Clemson? Mack Brown could be getting it done again after an impressive tenure at Texas before it came crashing down.
NFL draft will be virtual and Goodell in his basement. I'm sure its a rather nice basement. A dry run mock draft will test the IT departments' work and hey, drafts used to be done by good old fashioned phone calls anyway. Drew Brees to NBC as a broadcaster is said to be in the works after his playing days are over? Will he be any good? Will he have as much success as Romo? Christian McCaffrey gets bag in Carolina. He's more than just a RB, he's the X-factor, a dynamic weapon in the truest sense of the word. He's the face of the franchise now and Teddy B will benefit from having him around. XFL closes shop but declares a Chapter 11 and not 7 bankruptcy so what could that possibly mean? WWE CEO Vince McMahon has lost a lot of money in this economic downturn due to COVID 19 pandemic, but should we bounce back, could we see XFL again? Not likely if it has to compete with NCAA football if this season gets pushed back. Bill O'Brien makes another crazy trade and it stinks to high heaven. A second round pick for Brandin Cooks and his multiple concussions? The guy could very well retire soon after making plenty of money thus far in his career. I hit ya with a first round likely mock draft, picks 1-32.
NFL pushed on with its Apr 23-25 draft plans and we can't wait! We need something else to talk about while all stuck indoors. Teams will have to lean heavily on their IT departments. NFL teams conducted drafts for a long time before internet, email, Skype, Zoom, etc... Pass interference review is gone after last season's debacle, but we suspect some form of video review official in the booth. What is ESPN going to do now with their Monday Night Football broadcast now that Romo and Manning are both out? Is Drew Brees willing to give it a go next season and will he be good at it? Is it more important to make sure it's someone good or to make a big splash name hire? Titans RB D Henry signs sign franchise tender, but they should draft his future cheaper replacement now. Are the Jets going after Clowney? Jags need to unload passrusher Yannick Ngakue pretty soon. Nick Saban has using this COVID 19 downtime to learn to get tech savvy including email, etc...but are the Apple Watches for players a bridge too far with the NCAA? Mike Leach, HC at Miss St. loses a player due to his dumb twitter activity. You're no longer in Washington St Mike. You're in the deep south bud. Keep the references to nooses to a minimum...or zero rather.
Former Saints and Falcons QB Bobby Hebert's dad dies due to COVID 19 complications, but former kicker Tom Dempsey recovers. The pandemic has hit Louisiana and especially New Orleans hard. Drew Brees and wife Brittany have donated a whopping unheard of 5 million dollars towards relief in the area. How awesome is that?! We've heard and read of several athletes stepping up to help fight this new enemy. Could Miami be trying to convince Cincy to trade away the top pick? Rumor has it they are also smitten with Joe Burrow. What would the Phins be willing to pay? Could the Saints shift focus to addressing linebacker, D-line or defense as a whole now that they've signed WR Emmanuel Sanders? Also, who might slide down into their laps as someone often does for many reasons? Chris Godwin turns over No 12 jersey to Tom Brady...gracious, and smart if he wants to have targets come his way...Bruce Arians shut door on any Antonio Brown talk. He knows first hand what a fruit cake diva he is from their time in Pittsburgh. Tom Brady will have to look to those other plentiful weapons in Tampa. Buffalo signing ex Panthers as if they're competing with Ron Rivera's Redskins for them. Could Jimmy Graham have a resurgent year in Matt Nagy's offense? Xavier Rhodes signs with Colts. Chiefs have a whopping 117 dollars in cap space. How could they create some space? Pat Maholmes needs to be locked up and he will be the highest paid QB ever mostly likely. NCAA administrators take a pay cut and provide some options for student athletes amid coronavirus implications
NFL draft to move on as scheduled albeit not in Vegas hotel...which is fine. Names can be read and phones can buzz with notifications. It still will be covered an analyzed in real time on ESPN and other sports networks and sites. How exactly did Brady to the Bucs happen? Things changed after the Garrapolo trade and now New England is having a firesale. So are the Rams. Phins throwing money around this free agency period. Brian Flores will actually field an NFL team this year and considering how far he got last year's team, this could be interesting. Darius Slay goes from Detroit to Eagles, where he is desperately needed. Saints welcome back Malcolm Jenkings as Vonn Bell stalls and eventually darts to Cincy. Saints look to have improved in secondary and pick up WR Emmanuel Sanders, shoring up the corps. Do they still draft a WR in the first? Sean Payton comes down with COVID-19 but appears to be improving. Will Jadeyvon Clowney simply end up back in Seattle? Does he want too much despite not being a great pure pass rusher? Dallas Cowboys Center Travis Frederick retires after not quite being himself after fighting a bout of Guillian Barre syndrome, which is an autoimmunne neuromuscular disorder. Cam Newton released in Caroline and Matt Rhule brings in some of his Temple players, PJ Walker and Robby Anderson.
Huge Free Agency happenings and trades to get us out of the COVID-19 pandemic doldrums. Signings and trades went ahead at the desire of the NFLPA and deals will be consummated sight unseen, based on last seasons performances and without physicals as they cannot be performed at this time due to the virus. The movement begins with the CBA being approved by a slim margin for 10 more years of labor peace. Tom Brady to the Bucs! DeAndre Hopkins to the Cards!? What on God's green earth is Bill O'Brien doing? Stephon Diggs to the Bills. DT DeForest Buckner traded to the Colts for a 1st rounder. Brady will have weapons he did not have in New England. Now, was it Brady or Belichik more responsible for that dynasty? Will we find out? Bengals even sign a couple of players although they way overpay Trae Waynes as Minnesota largely tried to hide him. Also bring in DT DJ Reader. Browns improve O-line with RT J Conklin from Tennessee and sign TE Austin Hooper for more 2 TE set looks that HC Kevin Stefanski likes using. Case Keenum also brought in wisely to help Baker Mayfield with the offense. Cam out in Carolina as the Panthers make overtures to Teddy Bridgewater. Jameis Winston and Cam are out there twisting in the wind. Phillip Rivers to play behind a decent O-line for once in Indy and they convince LT Castanzo to return. Titans resign Ryan Tannehill who was better than what the stats showed. They release RB D Lewis, TE D Walker, and Cam Wake. Sign Vic Beasley to a one year "prove it" deal. XFL closes shop due to Coronavirus, but talks expansion. Good fan followings in St Louis and Seattle. The XFL will pay players and staff their full salaries.
Coronavirus aka COVID 19 aka Wuhan virus (not racist) wrecks havoc in the sports world. NBA suspends season. NCAA not having conference tourneys. How long will this go on? We seem to be now "in the eye of the storm" being about 50 days behind China with respect to intensity. The NBA is getting a bit of Karma with their cozy relationship with China and not supporting Hong Kong democratic protesters. CBA vote to be held soon, Russell Okung now out as president of NFLPA, JC Tretter in. 17 games and more playoff teams will likely mean more cashflow for players. Big names, making lots of bag, against it without really naming anything in particular they have issues with. Tony Romo scores a big deal with CBS...ESPN tries to lure Peyton Manning to its MNF broadcast and "trade" for Al Michaels to pair with him. Chargers pay the right running back in Austin Ekeler, whos worked his butt off being an undrafted FA coming out of Western Colorado. He was better with rushing YPC than Melvin Gordon and is an elite pass-catching back. LA Rams have a new logo leak on the internet on a cap and it's not impressive. It looks like its combining Rams and Chargers logos. It includes a swirl over LA that looks like it could be either a Ram horn or a Charger bolt. Josh Norman reunites with a former coach in Buffalo, Trent Williams given permission from Redskins to seek trade, TB pushing hard for Tom Brady, and more in this weeks pod
Some amazing combine workouts to talk about including Tristan Wirfs and Mekhi Becton. Guys this big should not be moving like that. LOL. Players likely to be franchise tagged in the NFL... Broncos acquire AJ Bouye from Jags for a 4th rd pick. Lots of homegrown Jags players want out in a troubling trend, yet Doug Marrone and GM David Caldwell are retained, so what exactly are they doing? Rams are in a tough spot with their cap situation and their mortgaged future. Could TE Austin Hooper end up in Green Bay? Nick Saban uses a staffing lose to get better with strength and conditioning. Kirby poaches Saban's staff, but did that allow the Tide to get better? Florida Gators bring in Tim Brewster, who is a recruiting master...Is LSU turning into a LBU in addition to DBU? Kwon Alexander, Deion Jones, Devin White, Patrick Queen, and Jacob Phillips are all LBs that are or will be playing on Sundays... XFL viewship numbers dip down again slightly. Landry Jones re-aggravates his knee injury. This may be a blessing in disguise as Landry has been an INT machine. Vipers pick up their first win. DC Defenders are reeling...Hal Mumme breaks a leg and keeps on coaching through the game! That's Texas football tough!
LSU moves Kevin Faulk to running backs coach and he should really help out with recruiting. Good move by coach O after Tommie Robinson left for TAMU. Bo Pelini being back in the fold at DC and Faulk helping out with recruiting is a bit exciting for LSU Tiger fans. After a phenomenal and magical season as LSU had, staff turnover is inevitable and Coach O has made the best of it. Colorado moves on from Eric Bieniemy and goes for Karl Dorrell who has experience coaching in the Pac 12. He was last with the Dolphins coaching WRs and we saw DaVante Parker break out. Tua expected to be cleared for March 9th by his doctors so it's definitely good to see the talented young QB's progress but he is likely to get a redshirt year in the NFL if the team that selects him is smart. Joe Burrow's tweet about his small hands shows his humorous side. I love his confidence and swag, but also this tongue-in-cheek jab at the Underwear Olympics. He is still expected to go Number 1 to Cincy and has erased any prospects of him pulling an Eli or Elway. The NFL-NFLPA CBA is being negotiated and a few high profile superstars voice their dissent on the new deal. We go over the key changes including the 17 game regular season proposal. Lastly, we skim through the weekend's XFL action. This league and the AAF did a better job of officiating and review transparency. It is an absolute joke that the NFL cannot get its act together on officiating blind spots. The Pass Interview challenge rule is one and done...what's going to replace it because the problem will likely rear its head again...
TE Greg Olsen & Seattle agree to terms on 1 year deal. Drew Brees returns for another year. Return of Cam Newton gets lukewarm response from Panthers. Joe Flacco said to be ready to play. What does it mean for him and the Broncos. Myles Garrett reinstated with Brows. Charlie Strong joins Alabama staff as defensive analyst for Saban. UK retains Vince Marrow in a big win for their recruiting and staff. Coach Stoops has done a great job there @ UK. XFL actions continues as face of the league Landry Jones is up and down in his debut. Steelers couldve kept him and/or Josh Dobbs and had better production at the backup QB position.
LSU lands Scott Linehan to replace Joe Brady as an offensive assistant and passing game coordinator. Not a hire I was expecting but I think Coach O deserves the benefit of the doubt after the amazing championship season. SEC dominates once again in recruiting classes. LSU lands at number 5 and TN Vols rank 9. Georgia lands the consensus top class but only time will tell. This of course, does not always translate to championships, esp with regard to Kirby Smart. Michigan State is left scrambling after the resigning of Mark Dantonio but convince Mel Tucker to come over from Colorado. Dominoes fall and now Colorado is left having to poach some coach from some other program. We dive into what the early returns are on XFL action and review the differences between this league and the NFL's game. I definitely like the kickoffs, which reduce high impact collisions but still maintain some excitement. Taysom Hill expresses belief that he can be a franchise QB. It will be interesting to see what tender the Saints place on the restricted free agent. Jameis Winston has eye surgery. Will this reduce his turnovers? Was he issued an ultimatum by the Bucs? Jags will play 2 home games in London in 2020. Antonio Gates, Eric Weddle, and Vernon Davis are added to the list of players retiring in the NFL. Is Zach Thomas, long time MLB with the Phins being snubbed? When will he get in if ever? He has posted numbers in similar ball park with Brian Urlacher and Derrick Brooks.
Andy Reid, Patrick Mahomes and that revamped CHIEFS defense pulls out a late 46th quarter stunner and get the Super Bowl 54 win, 31-20. My Mahomey struggled most of the game against than vaunted San Fran D, but did just enough to pull out the W with a mentos in Diet Coke explosion late. Chiefs are a great story and are champs again after more than 50 years. NFL did a great job on the 100 year anniversary production. Halftime featured some very talented and physically fit females, Shakira and Jennifer Lopez to no doubt accentuate Miami's Hispanic cultural influence. But damn it was quite raunchy. The commercials were mostly light-hearted and funny but some were downright hilarious. We also recap the NFL honors awards. Lamar Jackson, QB Ravens, is the MVP. Nick Bosa won Defensive Rookie of the Year. Stephon Gilmore, cb Pats, wins DPOY. OROY goes to Kyler Murray, but DK Metcalf and AJ Brown deserve some mention as well. OPOY goes to Michael Thomas aka CantGuardMike, WR Saints. John Harbaugh wins Coach of the Year and his OC Greg Roman won assistant coach of the year. Congrats to all who won. Modern era HOFers are Broncos S Steve Atwater, Colts RB Edgerrin James, Rams WR Isaac Bruce, Steelers S Troy Polamalu, and Seahawks G Steve Hutchinson. Great class!
Before we talk football, we pay respects to Kobe Bryant, a phenomenal basketball superstar who was the product of superb athletic ability married to hard work and great practice habits. RIP Kobe. Thoughts about the upcoming Super Bowl and redemption stories. Senior Bowl scouting reports and who helped themselves. LSU taps a familiar face to head up the defense in Bo Pelini, who is a complete 180 from Dave Aranda as far as demeanor. Phillip Rivers likely done with Chargers, Eli Manning official retirement. Russ Wilson gives his Pro Bowl starting spot to Drew Brees. LSU could possibly land huge recruit Jordan Burch from S Carolina.
Super Bowl 54 is set with the 49ers against the KC Chiefs. I am very excited about this matchup and the hope is that it will be better than the AFC and NFC championship. Niners pummel Packers bloody with a physical running game featuring Raheem Mostert as the star...a dreamer and hard worker formerly cut by 6 teams. KC outlasts the upstart scrappy Titans by some help by magic Mahomes and his legs and right arm. Chiefs contain Derrick Henry and Titans get burnt by KC's speed. LSU players and coaches are leaving, but we still have a lot left in the cabinet. Keep the faith. It was a magical season that ended with owning those Clemson kitty cats. LSU visits the White House and of course...HAVE FUN! Get the Gat and get the NATTY! AB breaks Drew Rosenhaus and is OBJ becoming a mini-AB? LSU should cut ties with the former player. D'Eriq King ends up in Miami with the U and Felippe Franks moves to Arkansas.
