Resurse: Resurse: 1. Episode #237 Owen Segerstrom, Connecting With Healthy Farms For Optimal Health Hello Health Heroes!  This week I interviewed Owen Segerstrom the owner of Nourish Food Hub in Northern California. Owen and his wife Hanna were very active working with a non-profit organization creating a place to bring together healthy chemical free farms with local people who desired to consume the highest quality food possible. When the board of directors decided to push a farm's products that had genetically modified organisms Owen and Hanna sent an email to all the members just telling the truth and later that afternoon they were fired for doing what is morally right. A few months later they started their own business doing the same thing but without having to compromise their integrity like the non profit. These people should be awarded a medal of honor for holding true to their values to connect people to nature so they can heal and I think you're going to love their story as you learn how to get fresh food for yourself and your family.

Engorgement, clogged ducts & mastitis are words all breastfeeding moms are familiar with. They can be scary & overwhelming, particularly at the beginning of your breastfeeding journey, but can pop up throughout the duration of time that you are breastfeeding - mainly when significant changes are happening in your life, including night weaning & complete weaning. To further complicate things, there has been a fundamental shift in the way that science and leading lactation organizations and experts understand these conditions - this has resulted in the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine completely overhauling their Mastitis Proctol.  This means that the approach both lactating people & those who support them take when addressing engorgement, clogged ducts & mastitis has changed, or needs to change. This is relevant to those who are early in their breastfeeding experience, of course, but it's ALSO relevant to those who have been breastfeeding for a year or more.   You are more likely to be supporting friends & family members when they are encountering these things, and you are more likely to be using methods you were told to use when you face them yourself - but those methods are likely based on an outdated understanding of what engorgement, clogged ducts & mastitis are and could be creating MORE issues than they are solving. In this episode I break down: -> The big change -> Each condition in the Mastitis Spectrum of Conditions-> Support for general treatment & prevention -> The role stress plays (and what to do about it)   DISCLAIMER: This podcast is for educational purposes only and is not intended to be medical advice. ‘We were modeling appropriate ecotourism and making sure that the monies generated hired local people, bought local products, and stayed in local hotels, all to keep the money in Wyoming.' - Tom Segerstrom Tom Segerstrom had a lifelong desire to forge a bond between man and wildlife. Born and raised in the suburbs of Minneapolis, an early obsession with wildlife led him to major in Montana State University. His passion for wildlife spilled over into his career with Wyoming Game and Fish Department. Despite the success, something didn't sit right with Tom. He noticed a widening gap between the public and their interaction with wildlife. Inspired by Harvard studies, he realized people's perception of wildlife was skewed by a lack of interaction. He was determined to bridge this gap, to show people the beauty he saw in wildlife. Tom took the road less travelled, moving to Jackson Hole and launching his own business to give people a whole new wildlife experience. He saw potential in a market that overlooked wildlife's appeal, creating a novel niche that thrived on people's curiosity and desire to connect with nature. With eyes sparkling with passion, young Tom Segerstrom set off from his home in Minneapolis, dreaming of connecting people to the wildlife he had loved since childhood. The next step? Jackson Hole. Here, Tom endured the obstacles of securing permits, learning the area, and establishing his company. Tom had a clear vision and an unwavering determination. He gave tourists the chance to observe, appreciate, and learn about animals in their natural habitat. He was able to turn the tide of the tourism industry, emphasizing the importance of wildlife and pioneering a new form of engagement. My special guest is Tom Segerstrom Meet Tom Segerstrom, a naturalist at heart and a trailblazer in the field of eco-tourism. Growing up with an unwavering interest in wildlife, Tom expanded his passion into a commendable career. As a certified wildlife biologist, he broke the mould by initiating the concept of wildlife viewing ecotourism in the Greater Yellowstone area. Notably known for his innovative approach, Tom embarked on a journey to make wildlife experiences accessible for people who are not necessarily hunters or fishermen. His success in setting up participatory conservation experiences have opened a new dimension in wildlife stewardship. Despite the high stakes and varied challenges, his relentless dedication gives his audience the chance to tangibly partake in wildlife conservation. In this episode, Jeff and Steve discuss: Being God's ambassador. Reframing your view of wealth and coming to understand the purpose. Being defined by more than how the world sees you. Authentic relationships and safe spaces.   Key Takeaways: What defines you is not your identity, but the love that the God of the universe has for you. Wealth is a gift from God. It is a tool to better progress His work and His mission. It is amazing how much self gets into our best intentions. Make sure you are giving for the right reasons, and for the glory of God, rather than for your own ego. God is not a one-size fits all God. It is individual. Everyone is on their own faith journey.   "Wealth is as much a gift from God and it should be celebrated, not in a boastful way, but with thanksgiving." —  Steve Perry About Steve Perry: Steve Perry is a pastor by trade, having served in 2 congregations for 17 years, the later being the senior for 12 years. In 1975 he married Susie Segerstrom whom he met at Azusa Pacific University. Unbeknownst to him until their engagement Steve discovered that he was marrying into one of Orange County, CA pioneering families. Originally the Segerstrom family set out to be farmers in 1896 but all that would change when a major freeway came through their property and they decided to become developers, with their crown jewel being South Coast Plaza. This new reality of marrying into a wealthy family was not something that Steve was prepared for emotionally, spiritually and theologically. It took 20 years for Steve to finally discover the nexus where faith and wealth can co-exist biblically, joyfully and responsibly. In 1996, Steve co-founded what is now the National Christian Foundation office in California. He and Susie oversee the family foundation, Sacred Harvest. The mob that sacked the US Capitol on January 6 represented a broad slice of America.  But Carl Segerstrom of High Country News says a lot of the impetus for the assault on the Federal Government coms from rural West and a movement called The Sagebrush Rebellion. Now many of its leaders may be called to account. But will prosecuting the ringleaders of the mob attack bring their movement under control…or just fan the flames of a rural, White Supremist opposition.

Segerstrom and Gregory E. MillerIn mammals, these responses include changes that increase the delivery of oxygen and glucose to the heart and the large skeletal muscles. The result is physiological support for adaptive behaviors such as “fight or flight.” Immune responses to stressful situations may be part of these adaptive responses because, in addition to the risk inherent in the situation (e.g., a predator), fighting and fleeing carries the risk of injury and subsequent entry of infectious agents into the bloodstream or skin. Any wound in the skin is likely to contain pathogens that could multiply and cause infection (Williams & Leaper, 1998). Stress-induced changes in the immune system that could accelerate wound repair and help prevent infections from taking hold would, therefore, be adaptive and selected along with other physiological changes that increased evolutionary fitness.https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10204970Psychological stress, cytokine production, and severity of upper respiratory illness.Cohen S1, Doyle WJ, Skoner DP.OBJECTIVE:The purpose of this study is to assess the role of psychological stress in the expression of illness among infected subjects and to test the plausibility of local proinflammatory cytokine production as a pathway linking stress to illness.METHODS:After completing a measure of psychological stress, 55 subjects were experimentally infected with an influenza A virus. Subjects were monitored in quarantine daily for upper respiratory symptoms, mucus production, and nasal lavage levels of interleukin (IL)-6.RESULTS:Higher psychological stress assessed before the viral challenge was associated with greater symptom scores, greater mucus weights, and higher IL-6 lavage concentrations in response to infection. The IL-6 response was temporally related to the two markers of illness severity, and mediation analyses indicated that these data were consistent with IL-6 acting as a major pathway through which stress was associated with increased symptoms of illness. However, this pattern of data is also consistent with increases in IL-6 occurring in response to tissue damage associated with illness symptoms.CONCLUSIONS:Psychological stress predicts a greater expression of illness and an increased production of IL-6 in response to an upper respiratory infection.Support the show (http://www.patreon.com/patientwhisperers)

Over the last few weeks, we have received many messages asking if fibromyalgia increases the risk of developing COVID-19, the illness caused by SARS-CoV-2 (aka, "the coronavirus"). Tami has interviewed several doctors to get the facts, as best as we know them right now. This episode contains the information we know to be accurate as of the time of publishing. Tami also covers things you can do to strengthen your immune system so your body is best equipped to fight off COVID-19. Key Points Fibromyalgia itself doesn't increase your risk of COVID-19. However, fibromyalgia patients often have compromised immune systems which does increase your risk. Your best protection is to avoid exposure to the virus by staying home. Make sure your body and immune system are as healthy as possible to fight off infections. If you have autoimmune conditions, you want to be careful about how you strengthen your immune system. Focusing on the positive strengthens your immune system response. Be gentle with yourself. This is not the time to be beating yourself up. "Don't be sorry for me. Fibromyalgia is the best thing that ever happened to me." This may seem like a radical statement, and I know most of you aren’t in this space yet, but even small gestures of gratitude can make a big difference. A growing body of research shows that people who practice gratitude are more optimistic and have greater satisfaction in their lives. They have been shown to make fewer visits to the doctor and have improved immune system responses. More than just a Thanksgiving observance, counting your blessings and giving thanks can make a difference all year long. Key Points A growing body of research shows that an attitude of gratitude benefits our physical body. Where you place your focus is where your life will flow. This is a basic law of the universe. This is part of the law of attraction. We also find it in the Bible. It’s hard to count our blessings when fibromyalgia feels like an endless taking away of things, but we do have a choice. The three general guidelines for developing a gratitude practice *plus* three practical ideas to help you get started PLUS an advanced bonus tip for those ready to take their gratitude practice to the next level. Keep in mind that you are creating a habit—one that will pay dividends for the rest of your life. It's no secret that many young boys are victims of sexual assault growing up. I'm not sure of the exact numbers; however, I would assume that more often than not, many of these young men go on never to speak a single word of the assault. Well, that is not what Sean Segerstrom did. From the age of only four years, old Sean experienced sexual assault from a family member and then a close family friend. This would continue until his late teenage years. Sean explains that he thought that that is how people show each other that they love them. It's these experience that causes Sean some of the struggles that he still battles today. Although these are real struggles, finding any positivity in a story such as this can be very uncomfortable, there has been a silver lining. Sean explains how he found his chosen family. He speaks about the people that, while not blood related to him, are his family. Those who sat with him in some of his darkest moments in life without an ounce of judgment. These are the people who've always made him feel safe. Sean does a beautiful job helping the audience know that they, too, can find their chosen family! I hope that those of you whom Sean mentioned are listening to today's episode. You deserve to hear the kind things he said about you all. The love he has for you all is undeniable. Thanks, Sean, for sharing your message and story with the world. We need more people like you not only to stand up against the injustices that they face but to also speak to the younger generations that are coming up after us. Young people, we need you guys to know that you're not alone. While it might feel that way now, it will not always be this way. There is a natural progression of life that happens and often its an uncomfortable growing pain that we don't at the moment often understand. The beautiful thing about it is if we take a step back and surrender control to something greater than ourselves, then, the possibilities of our life are endless and bountiful!
