Brittney Kilgore an international in Grenada student at St. George's University School of Veterinary Medicine speaks on her career journey so far as an aspiring feline specialistBrittney Kilgore is a 22-year-old, second-year DVM student at St. George's University, located on the beautiful Caribbean island of Grenada. She is originally from Atlanta, Georgia, and has always had a passion for animals. Like many veterinarians, she wanted to pursue this career since her early childhood. She attended the University of Georgia for undergrad, where she started off majoring in poultry science and ended up with a degree in Biological Sciences. She has always been fascinated with cats, especially big ones. For most of her life, she hoped to work with large animals, but since she was 18, she worked in a feline specialty clinic and absolutely LOVED it. Brittney hopes to one day open an all-cat clinic of her own. Currently, she has one snowshoe cat named Toulouse who travels to and from Grenada with her.

Dr. Elizabeth Johnson Million shares EVERYTHING veterinary students need to know about the NAVLE in this must-hear episodeDr. Million grew up in the mountains of east Tennessee. Dr. Tolani Francisco shares her experiences on what it is like to grow up as a Native in pursuit of becoming a veterinarian.Dr. Francisco is a 1990 graduate of the Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine. She currently is the Wild Horse and Burro Coordinator for the US Forest Service in Albuquerque, NM. Dr. Francisco spent 13.5 years in Colorado, first as the Public Health Officer at Buckley Air Force Base, then as the Regional Epidemiology Officer for the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, Veterinary Services (USDA, APHIS, VS). Prior, Dr. Francisco was stationed at Nellis AFB, Las Vegas, NV, Brooks-City Base, San Antonio, TX and Maxwell AFB, Montgomery, AL. Before entering the Air Force, Dr. Francisco spent two years in Trinidad, Bolivia with the USDA APHIS International Services working as a Veterinary Medical Officer (VMO) overseeing the Foot and Mouth Disease eradication efforts in the Departments of Beni and Pando. She spent 6 years in Albuquerque as a section VMO for the USDA APHIS VS after starting her federal career in Helena, MT as a VMO. She started her veterinary career in a mixed animal practice in Reno, NV. In 2016, Dr. Francisco established Native Healing LLC [a 501(c)3 organization providing veterinary care to tribal animals] on the Pueblo of Laguna (large and small). In her spare time, Dr. Francisco owns a small 5-acre alfalfa farm, has cattle with the tribal Sedillo Cattle Association and has three family dogs, six family cats and four horses. She is married to Jason Schlie, who is a Conservation Law Enforcement officer at White Sands Missile Range. She is the daughter of Eldon and Shirley Francisco and has one brother, Curtis.

What does passion in vet med look like? #NextSquad members Dr. Jeff Tinsley, and veterinary students Dana Tsuchida, and Danielle Marie Lancer discuss their very different passions in the field on this month's episodeDr. Jeff Tinsley graduated from vet school at Tuskegee University in 2017. He completed a Small Animal Rotating Internship in 2018 at the Blue Pearl of San Antonio, Texas. He stayed in San Antonio for a year of general practice, then moved to Louisville, Kentucky for a one year Dermatology Specialty Internship with Animal Dermatology Clinic. He is currently completing a three-year residency at the ADC of Louisville. Outside of vet med he enjoys supporting local restaurants, teaching crossfit, and running with his dog “Renly.”Dana Tsuchida is a third-year veterinary student at Oregon State University, Carlson College of Veterinary Medicine. After graduation, she hopes to work with a variety of animals, including exotics and wildlife, by practicing integrative veterinary medicine. She is currently working on her CVA (Certificate of Veterinary Acupuncture) at Chi University. She aims to become a practice owner one day, but hopes to still be involved in international medicine by participating in global service projects. Outside of veterinary medicine, she enjoys many forms of art, including music, dance, and art history. Her motto is to closely work with one animal, one community, and one country at a time.Danielle Lancer is a second-year veterinary student at the University of Sydney in Australia. Chloe Pham is a second-year veterinary student at Cornell University's College of Veterinary Medicine and a DVM candidate of the Class of 2024. Before going to Cornell, Chloe obtained a BA in Religious Studies and a BA in Cognitive Science from the University of Virginia in 2016. Her post-baccalaureate education was done at Hunter College. Chloe has a strong interest in pursuing small animal medicine and incorporating animal and veterinary ethics into her future practice.Valarie Adams is a CVT with over 45 years working in veterinary medicine. She is a well known pioneer in the field of cancer care for companion animals and a founding member of the Veterinary Cancer Society. A 1972 graduate of UC Davis, she completed Dr. Gordon Theilen's first mock residency program in oncology and has served the profession by consulting, writing and lecturing in the rapidly growing field of veterinary oncology and end of life care. She was awarded the UC Davis Alumni Achievement Award in 1994, and the Leo Bustad Companion Animal Veterinarian of the Year Award in 1999. She is Editor-in-Chief of the AAHABV Newsletter, Secretary of the Animal Health Foundation of the SCVMA and Founder of the Peter Zippi Memorial Fund for Animals, with over 10,000 rescued and placed pets. Dr. Villalobos is serving as President of the Society for Veterinary Medical Ethics (SVME) for 2010-2011. She will raise discussions about the ethical obligation that veterinarians have to communicate compassionately yet frankly with clients regarding options for pets with cancer and other terminal diseases.

Dr. Chatfield served on the curriculum redevelopment team for the nationally renowned DHS course, “Emergency Response to a Domestic Biological Incident.” Her extensive experience in public health includes developing a jurisdiction's plan for response to bioterrorism in a large metropolitan area. She was an original founder of the Pasco Hernando Veterinary Medical Association (PHVMA) and served as its President since 2008. Dr. Chatfield completed a Congressional Fellowship working in the US House of Representatives from 2016-2018. Dr. Chatfield is one of the most popular speakers at the largest veterinary conferences and has been quoted in national magazines including Better Homes & Gardens. She was selected as a Future Leader by the AVMA and has been awarded 2 Gold Stars for contributions to veterinary medicine by the FVMA.Dr. Chatfield loves French bulldogs, Himalayan cats, the dirtiest of vodka martinis and basking on Caribbean beaches.
Bond Vet's Dr. Simone McLaughlin shares her experiences with leadership in the clinic and the importance of maintaining positive team cultureSince the age of 7, Dr. McLaughlin knew she wanted to work in the vet space. She's now a veterinarian and mom, to two adorable boys *and* a Rottweiler Collie mix. When she has time to herself, she enjoys yoga, swimming, and binge-watching some quality movies. Dr. Tillery's vast experience extends beyond general practice in Texas: he has also worked in emergency room and critical care as well as provided surgical support for the local shelter that he continues to support on weekends. He actively participates in the Power of 10 leadership group with the TVMA to help maintain, improve, and lead the veterinary profession into the future.
We spoke to founder of Pets Help the Heart Heal, Inc. Dr. Stephanie Jones about the importance of the human-animal bond in veterinary medicine Dr. Stephanie Jones is co-owner of the Animal Hospital of Ft. Lauderdale. A native of Arkansas, she received her bachelor's degree in animal science from Texas A&M in 1994 and her doctorate in veterinary medicine from the University of Florida in 1999. Dr. Jones moved to Ft. Lauderdale after graduation and joined the Animal Hospital of Ft. Lauderdale team in 2000. Known at that time for its reproduction services, Dr. Jones developed a special interest in reproductive medicine and soft tissue surgery. Her passion for surgery, innovative medicine, and optimal patient care allowed for the Animal Hospital of Fort Lauderdale to be one of few hospitals in South Florida to offer stem cell therapy. In addition to being a practice co-owner and veterinarian, Dr. Jones also serves as President on the executive board of the Broward County Veterinary Medical Association. In 2019, Dr. Jones became the CEO and Founder of Pets Help the Heart Heal, Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the social, physical, and emotional health of youth through the human animal bond. The organization incorporates veterinary medicine, veterinary care, animal industry career exploration, and the human animal bond through events and activities provided to underserved and underprivileged youth. As part of this organization, Dr. Jones is a mentor to teens, conducts career day presentations to elementary schools, and oversees a shadow program at the hospital, which she created, for high school students interested in a veterinary career. She hopes that her love for animals and passion for her career sparks interest in animals and helps motivate today's youth to reach for their dreams.
This month we interviewed Elli Verrocchi a second-year veterinary student at The Royal Veterinary College in England, who is originally from Australia, about her online experienceElli Verrocchi is a second-year veterinary student at The Royal Veterinary College in London, England. She is originally from Melbourne, Australia, where she completed her BSc in Zoology at Monash University (2018). She has worked and volunteered within the veterinary/animal-shelter sector for more than five years as a veterinary nurse/assistant. It is there she discovered she wanted to become a vet. Verrocchi has a passion for all things wildlife, ECC, and small animal/shelter medicine. She is keeping her options open for a variety of specialties upon graduating. Outside of studying, you will find her playing soccer (or football, depending where you are from) with her RVCWFC team, drawing a Disney cartoon for a friend, or travelling across the world to spend time with her family down-under.
Experienced specialist, Dr. Millie Rosales joined us to talk about what veterinary dermatology is all about.Dr. Millie Rosales graduated with a Bachelors of Biology and high honors from Florida International University. She received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the University of Florida, College of Veterinary Medicine in 2000. Following graduation, she worked as a general practitioner in Miami for a non-profit small animal clinic. In 2003, Dr. Rosales returned to the University of Florida and completed a two year residency in the specialization of veterinary dermatology. Dr. Rosales is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Dermatology (ACVD), a distinction given only to practitioners who have achieved board certification in this specialty. She has also authored several articles and lectured at local and state veterinary associations. Dr. Rosales holds a primary interest in allergic and immune mediated skin conditions in dogs and cats; and chronic (recurrent) ear infections in dogs. A native Miamian, Dr. Rosales values her roots and is fluent in English and Spanish enabling her to serve the Spanish speaking clients of the South Florida area. Away from the office, Dr. Rosales enjoys running, spending time with her family and daughter, and doing art activities.

Dr. Rothstein has been a long-time contributing author to a number of practice management journals. He has served on the Advisory Boards of Veterinary Economics and Veterinary Practice News. He currently is on the Board of Directors of Mission Veterinary Partners and the Professional Animal Wellness Group (PAW). He lives with his family (including 2 dogs and 4 cats), in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where he has resided since graduating from Colorado State University, where he received a joint DVM/ MBA degree. On a personal note, he is a long-term avid runner who frequently competes in both running and triathlon events. After working with the US Department of Agriculture, she decided to start her own company, Steadfast International LLC and opened Dr. Croom Mobile Veterinary Service, which allows her to provide professional, holistic veterinary care right inside people's homes. From its inception, Steadfast International has been committed not only to excellent veterinary care, but to the education of youth about potential careers in vet med. In 2016, Dr. Croom created her unique Future Veterinarian Program, where young students who are interested in animals and their care, meet with her in various pet supply stores to learn directly from a veterinarian what it takes in this exciting field. She is also working on expanding her new Ride-Along Program, which allows high school students to join her on actual house call veterinary appointments to learn what it really takes to deal with patients and their sometimes nervous owners. In addition, Dr. Croom has created her own brand of CBD pet products that she markets to her veterinary clients in person and on her website. She also serves in various capacities for organizations such as: Buddy 2 Buddy Veteran Volunteer Program, Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), and is a member of the Kalamazoo County Animal Services and Enforcement Advisory board.

Her 1973 graduation from the Medical Institute of Minnesota puts her in the "aged-but-still-useful" category of alums. Valarie's career has included large and small animal general practice and 17 years in emergency/critical care. In May 2008, she created the Healing Heart Foundation, Inc., a 501(c)3 non-profit that supported programs honoring the spirit of the Human Animal Bond. Healing Heart Pet Hospice program delivered hospice and palliative care to pet families, as well as programs for grief support and financial support for hardship cases. Valarie has lectured nationally and internationally and written and co-written for textbooks and online publications. She fills her heart by volunteering veterinary care to the dogs on a Native American reservation and feeds her soul and tends her spirituality with her horses, nature and singing blues/blues rock. She has a background in broadcast journalism and appeared on television and radio shows, including nationally syndicated Daytime. Despite her healthy lifestyle and busy schedule, in 2013 Angela was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. Determined to find alternatives to the toxic medications she was offered, she turned to CBD. Once she identified a pure source for CBD in California, her life changed forever. In 2016, Angela earned a professional certification in Medical Cannabis biology and the therapeutic uses from the University of Vermont College of Medicine. That year, she hosted Canna Conference to educate doctors, veterinarians and patients about the positive effects of medical cannabis and how cannabis reacts in the endocannabinoid system. In June 2018, Angela launched CBD Dog Health and its line of full spectrum hemp extract CBD for dog products. The passage of the Farm Bill that same year legalized hemp-growing in all 50 states, ensuring that these products will be available to the people and animals who need them most. In 2019, Angela partnered with Cannabis Radio to launch her pet-centric podcast, It's a Dog's Life. He is the co-founder of the Latinx Veterinary Medical Association, the first association of its kind to represent Latinx veterinary professionals in North America. He was born in Bogota, Colombia and moved to St. Paul, Minnesota when he was 10 years old. He obtained a Bachelors Degree in biology and conservation environmental sciences from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Juan, aka "@juancho.the.student.vet", has created social media platforms on Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube that focus on diversity, health and wellness, and entrepreneurship in veterinary medicine. Juan has a passion for small animal medicine and is interested in rehabilitation, ophthalmology, and surgery. One day he hopes to become a multi-practice owner that celebrates diversity and inclusion in the veterinary profession.

This month is all about mental health, wellness, and support within the veterinary industry, particularly through COVID-19 for Vet Chat With Us with Dr. Marie HolowaychukDr. Marie Holowaychuk is a board-certified specialist in small animal emergency and critical care and a passionate advocate for wellbeing in the veterinary profession. She lives in Calgary and travels worldwide as a speaker and locum. Dr. Holowaychuk has a diversity of experiences in veterinary medicine including time spent in general, specialty, and academic practice. One thing she feels is consistent no matter the veterinary setting is that all members of the profession are susceptible to experiencing moral stress, compassion fatigue, and burnout. As such, she facilitates wellness workshops and retreats and online wellbeing programs for veterinary care providers that include lectures, yoga, meditation practices, and one-on-one coaching. Dr. Holowaychuk is a certified yoga and meditation teacher and has completed a mindfulness-based stress reduction course for professionals. She also has Compassion Fatigue Training from the University of Tennessee School of Social Work, Mental Health First Aid Training from the Mental Health Commission of Canada, Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training from the Centre for Suicide Prevention, and a Life Coaching certificate. Her favorite self-care activities include strength training, practicing yoga, rollerblading, watching movies, and hiking in the Rocky Mountains.
NextPod will touch on equality among veterinary professionals, particularly in leadership with Dr. Bridget Heilsberg of the WVLDIDr. Bridget Heilsberg is the past-president of Women's Veterinary Leadership Development Initiative. She completed her Bachelor's Degree in Animal Science, with a focus on reproduction and genetics, at Cornell University in January 2003. Shortly after, she enlisted in the United States Naval Reserve and moved to California. In 2006, Bridget was activated with the Navy in support of Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. Dr. Heilsberg moved to Phoenix, Arizona upon returning home, and worked as a veterinary technician at Animal Medical and Surgical Center of Scottsdale as well as teaching at Kaplan College in the Veterinary Technician and Respiratory Technician programs. She moved to Fort Collins, Colorado in 2009 for veterinary school and is incredibly proud of her time spent as a Colorado State University Ram. After graduation, she completed an internship at JEH Equine Reproduction Services and Hospital, and was welcomed on as an associate once the internship concluded. In May 2016, Dr. Bridget left JEH Equine to start her own ambulatory practice in the North Texas and Texoma area. She continues her focus on overall wellness, therapeutic nutrition, and preventive sports medicine. She is incredibly grateful for the support of the community, and hopes to continue to give back to the local area by hosting client education seminars and continuing her work with NCTC's Equine Program.
NextPod is celebrating Black History Month by discussing diversity within the vet industry with Dr. Lisa Greenhill of the AAVMCDr. Lisa M. Greenhill originally joined the AAVMC in 1996 and has worked for the association on three separate occasions. Most recently, she joined the AAVMC in 2004 as the Associate Executive Director for Institutional Research and Diversity before becoming Senior Director for Institutional Research and Diversity. Her work primarily focuses on the ongoing development and implementation of the DiVersity Matters initiative at the national and local levels as well as promoting the veterinary medical profession within communities of color. Lisa also directs the association's national research agenda. She collects and analyzes data and produces reports related to academic veterinary medicine to include the applicant pool, enrollment, institutional economic impact and diversity. Lisa is the mother of teenage daughter and the owner of a fun-loving puppy. She also currently runs a blog and podcast about adoption in communities of color.
This month's NextPod touches on the importance of mentorship and finding the right person within the veterinary industry with mentor, Dr. Tannetje' CrockerDr. Tannetje' Crocker is a 2009 graduate from the Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine. Growing up Dr. Crocker was always passionate about horses and was inspired to become a veterinarian. Since graduation she has worked as an equine ambulatory vet, small animal general practitioner, and emergency veterinarian. She currently practices in Grapevine, Texas at Northwest Animal Hospital and the Animal Emergency Hospital of North Texas. She is passionate about mentorship and empowering both veterinary students and young veterinarians to embrace the profession and find joy and success.
