On this episode of Fuel For Life, I interview my good friend and fellow pastor, Gheorghe Rosca, Jr. Gheorghe is a Founding Board Member at Protect Our Kids (POK), a coalition of parents, community leaders, attorneys, physicians, pastors, teachers and concerned citizens united in the belief that today's public schools threaten our children's welfare. Public schools have a role in educating children on matters of basic biology, anatomy, and reproduction. However, the promotion of se*ual intimacy, se*ual orientation and fluid gender identities are matters that far exceed the rightful boundaries of the public-school system. So too is the advancement of Marxist Critical Theory ideology and the “re-framing” of American history to indoctrinate children into politically driven and misleading narratives. Taken together, these serve as a clarion call of the dangers to children in the public schools and, by extension, our society. POK exists to inform parents about the scope of these combined threats, their rights as parents, and to protect our kids from the harms of public-school indoctrination. Pastor Gheorghe is the eighth of twelve children, born in Romania under the communist regime of Nicolae Ceaucescu. His family immigrated to the states legally in 1991. He grew up in Southern California and lives in Orange with his wife and four children. He pastors New Hope church in Placentia, CA. He holds a Bachelor's in Civil Engineering and an MBA with an emphasis in Project Management from California Polytechnic University. As a registered Civil Engineer in the state of California, he leads diverse teams on large transportation infrastructure projects. As a Founding Board Member, he is passionate about protecting the freedoms granted in the Constitution that are aligned with the values of the Founding Fathers for future generations.Connect with Gheorghe on these following Social Media Platforms:Click here to follow Protect Our Kids on Instagram.Click here to friend Gheorghe on Facebook.Click here to learn more about  Gheorghe Rosca, Jr.Click here to visit the Protect Our Kids official website which hosts an enormous amount of free resources for parents. Connect with Bogdan on these following Social Media Platforms:Click here to check out Bogdan's Youtube Channel.Click here to follow Bogdan on Instagram.Click here to find out more about Forward Church in Irvine.

Join us as this week, Paul interviews John Lambert, Executive Director of the W.K. Kellogg Arabian Horse Center, which is the heart of California Polytechnic University in Pomona California. John talks through his introduction to the Arabian horse, with time in Michigan and California working with some legends of the industry, before he joined the staff as first the trainer and then the executive director at W.K. Kellogg. He shares the incredible history of the longest-running active breeding program of Arabian Horses in the United States, established in 1926 by W.K. Kellogg of cereal fame. He found horses in Southern California and then jumped straight to one of the primary sources of the modern Arabian horse: The Crabbet Stud in England, where the famous Lady Wentworth was convinced to part with some of her finest mares and stallions, which provided a cornerstone for the Arabian Horse in the United States. From there, the program grew, and to ensure its posterity, Mr. Kellogg donated the farm, the horses, and all of the land to the state of California to establish what would become the Cal Poly Pomona campus that is known today. The Arabian farm remains the heart of the campus, and has involved both students and the public in a variety of activities, from Foal Watch to a show for the public every Sunday. John's stewardship has led the program to its high point for sales by eliminating the Private Treaty sale for all "CP" horses, while improving their esteem to be counted among the top performance horse breeding programs year after year.   We are delighted to be speaking with another rock star in our industry today! Junior Tauvaa is the Chief Sales and Marketing Officer of Visit Anaheim.  Junior has had an amazing career! He shares some stories, ideas, and insights about how the CVB (Convention and Visitor Bureau) evolved to become the DMO (Destination Management Organization) and what today's younger generation is looking for in terms of marketing. He also gets into sales, marketing, and influencers.  We hope you enjoy listening to our fascinating conversation with Junior Tauvaa today! Bio: Junior Tauvaa: Chief Sales Officer, Visit Anaheim  Junior Tauvaa has served as Chief Sales Officer at Visit Anaheim since October 2013.  Tauvaa leads sales and marketing teams for Visit Anaheim to increase Anaheim's market share and customer satisfaction in the meetings and leisure market. He also leads Orange County Sports Commission in positioning Anaheim/Orange County as a premier sports destination. Tauvaa is very involved with meetings and events industry on initiatives to ensure the Anaheim/Orange County brand continues to be a thought leader in the industry. Tauvaa was previously Executive Vice President of Strategic Partnerships with Meeting Professional International (MPI) and the MPI Foundation, the largest global meeting and event industry association for seven years. He was previously with Los Angeles Tourism Board for more than ten years and held several key leadership roles.  Tauvaa held different volunteer leadership positions with Destination International (DI), Events Industry Council (EIC), American Society of Association Executives (ASAE), Professional Convention Management Association (PCMA), and Meeting Professionals International Foundation (MPIF) as well as several technology companies throughout his career. He is currently serving in volunteer leadership positions at DI and EIC.  Tauvaa earned a master's degree in Public Administration from California State University, Long Beach, and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from California Polytechnic University. Junior's story Junior started his career in the world of business consulting. One of his clients was Hilton Hotels, and he got introduced to the meeting and events industry when he got hired by Bob Moore, who had been with Hilton Hotels before taking a job with the LA Convention and Visitors Bureau (now known as the LA Tourism Bureau). LA Convention Bureau When Junior started working at the LA Convention Bureau, he grew to understand what CVBs were about, who their clients were, and how they made money. He spent almost eleven years working there and then moved over to MPI.  MPI He spent about seven years at MPI, growing and expanding their chapter and membership site into the European, Asia-Pacific, and Latin American markets. Through MPI, he got to understand the business from a global perspective. Visit Anaheim Junior returned to California to head up the sales side of Visit Anaheim and eventually took on the marketing and sports commission sides too. He considered going to Visit Anaheim as coming home.  Many professions There are many professions within our industry, from the management side to sales, marketing, finance, communication, social, and technology. Figuring things out When Junior was in Los Angeles, he wanted to figure out what the industry and business were all about. He also wanted to find out where he fit in and what got him going. Finding solutions Junior's approach to sales is all about finding solutions. He loves to connect with people, figure out their challenges, and connect them with others to help them find solutions. Diversity When trying to find solutions, it helps to have a variety of personalities and voices because they will offer diverse opinions and perspectives and make the conversation much richer. Evolution   When Junior joined the industry, they were known as CVB (Convention and Visitor Bureau). Back then, most DMOs focused on marketing their destination and bringing visitors, meetings, and events there.  Today, DMOs also look at destination development to make sure that their cities get developed in a way that works for both visitors and residents of the destination. Today's DMOs also work with local communities to help them understand the economic impact of visitors, meetings, and events and rally their support. The role of the DMO The role of the DMO is to communicate the uniqueness of every hotel and venue in its destination and inform visitors about what locals do for leisure and business. The role of DMOs  DMOs ensure that every organization coming to their destination has a successful event. Their biggest role is to support the organizers and business leaders that bring people to their destination. (That also includes supporting their staff and local communities.) The pandemic Since the pandemic, re-staffing has become a big issue for DMOs, hotels, and many other areas across the industry. The benefits employees are looking for today differ from what they wanted before the pandemic, and employers today require different skill sets. Visit Anaheim  Visit Anaheim is working with universities and using platforms like LinkedIn to promote the positions they are looking to fill. They understand that they need to work harder, from a management standpoint, to bring their teams together, communicate, and ensure that their culture and core values do not get lost when their team members work remotely. Marketing A lot has changed when it comes to marketing. In the past, Visit Anaheim did a lot of advertising. Today, they do less advertising, they have shifted to using video as a marketing component, and their content is all digital. Social media and working with influencers to bring their message to different generations have also become parts of their current marketing strategy. They also strive to get their message out via traditional media and be a thought-leader in the industry by sponsoring various industry-associated organizations. Selecting influencers They select authentic people, people connected to their destination, or those who understand their destination or event design as their influencers.  Measuring the success of their influencers They measure the success of their influencers by looking at everything from impressions to followers to referrals and bookings. The right metric to measure the success of their influencers is evolving as technology improves. The metaverse A vendor will soon be talking to them about the metaverse. After that, they will know more about where the industry is going. Then they will decide where to put their resources to get their message out to the marketplace.    Connect with Eric On LinkedIn On Facebook On Instagram On Website   Connect with Junior Tauvaa On LinkedIn Visit Anaheim

Are you curious about how a wine brand breaks through in a new market? Why is the wine category one of the most difficult to offer a great price/quality ratio? What unique challenges do women winemakers face in the industry?   In this episode of the Unreserved Wine Talk podcast, I'm chatting with Beth Liston, a rebel winemaker from California who's just launched a new wine called Longshot.   You can find the wines we discussed at https://www.nataliemaclean.com/winepicks.   Highlights How did Beth's interest in restoring vintage cars get started? When did Beth realize she wanted to become a winemaker? Which valuable lessons did Beth learn from working a harvest in South Australia? What's the most exciting aspect of being a winemaker? What does it mean to find your voice as a winemaker? What was the concept behind the creation of Longshot/Dark Horse wine? Why is it particularly difficult to maximize wine's price-quality ratio? How do the techniques used in making Longshot/Dark Horse help them to stand out in their category? What has Beth learned from her experimentation with blending grapes? How does Beth translate inspiration from trends in cocktails and beer into winemaking? What are the biggest trends currently dominating the drink industry? How can you identify thiols when tasting wine? What tasting experience can you expect from Longshot/Dark Horse Pinot Noir and Chardonnay? Which food pairings should you try with Longshot/Dark Horse Pinot Noir? What's the most rewarding aspect of being a winemaker? How does Beth navigate the challenges of being a woman in a male-dominated field?   Key Takeaways My MBA brain loves the back story of how a new wine brand breaks into a new market. So many factors are at play from the product itself and packaging to getting consumers to try the wine and building loyalty through repeat purchases. The wine category is one of the most difficult to offer a great price/quality ratio given the vagaries of weather from year to year. As Beth notes, it's an agricultural product, unlike say breakfast cereal where you can control production. It's also capital intensive, from having to age wine so you're tying up your cash flow, to the substantial investment in equipment, from presses to bottling lines. And finally, I admire her approach to building credibility in the industry as a woman and as a winemaker, regardless of gender. It takes perseverance, a love of change and adaptability and a willingness to get down in the trenches, or should we say the cellar, and learn the job from the ground up.   Join me on Instagram, Facebook and YouTube Live Video Join the live-stream video of this conversation on Wednesday at 7 pm eastern on Instagram Live Video, Facebook Live Video or YouTube Live Video. I'll be jumping into the comments as we watch it together so that I can answer your questions in real-time. I want to hear from you! What's your opinion of what we're discussing? What takeaways or tips do you love most from this chat? What questions do you have that we didn't answer? Want to know when we go live? Add this to your calendar: https://www.addevent.com/calendar/CB262621   About Beth Liston Beth Liston discovered her interest in wine while growing up on California's Central Coast. During college, she worked in a local tasting room, developing a fascination for both the art and science that goes into making great wines.   Beth earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration with a minor in Wine and Viticulture from California Polytechnic University in San Luis Obispo. After graduating, she completed graduate work in oenology and worked in wine sales in Austin, Texas before setting her sights on winemaking.   With more than a decade of harvests behind her, Beth has acquired diverse winemaking experiences from the Limestone Coast of South Australia to Napa Valley.   She's now the Director of Winemaking for Dark Horse wines in Modesto, in California's Central Valley. Outside of work, Beth enjoys spending time with her husband, Daniel, and their two sons, relaxing with yoga and travelling to explore new cultures through food and wine. She joins us now from Modesto, California.       To learn more about the resources mentioned in this episode, visit https://www.nataliemaclean.com/160.

She works closely with the internal winemaking team to develop and implement the vineyard department's farming protocols, while also managing all of Cliff Lede Vineyards' external grower relations.A native of Contra Costa County, California, Allison's introduction to grape growing was through harvest celebrations and weekend visits to her great uncle's nearby Livermore Valley vineyard, cementing her interest in agriculture from a young age. After graduating California Polytechnic University as a Fruit Science major in 2012, Allison jump-started her career in Napa as assistant viticulturist at RenteriaVineyard Management, where she eventually worked her way up to become viticulturist in 2014. Beyond The Meter
Renewable Energy Sourcing In Higher Education, with Wolfgang Bauer and Scott Therian, Ep #3

Beyond The Meter

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 9, 2019 42:17

The use of renewable energy is becoming more and more common on campuses of higher education across the country - and it’s not surprising. Institutions of higher education are both massive consumers of energy and are in the business of learning and teaching. That combination makes them ideal laboratories for innovation and advancement in the field. This episode features two guests, Wolfgang Bauer and Scott Therian who are both uniquely positioned to speak on renewable energy sourcing and adoption as it relates to higher education. Wolfgang is Associate Vice President for Administration at Michigan State University. His expertise is in renewable power systems integration, micro-grid management, energy efficiency, and sustainability. Scott is Project Development Manager at REC Solar. He has spent the last 9 years in the solar industry after getting his education in electrical engineering with a focus on power systems, energy conversion, and renewable energy sources. Join these two renewable energy experts and host, John Failla of Smart Energy Decisions for this intriguing and insightful episode. Outline of This Episode [1:05] What are the drivers for renewable energy sourcing in higher education? [8:02] How renewable energy fits into the energy sourcing of many colleges [18:09] Why are universities moving slowly on renewable energy sourcing? [26:42] Will higher education institutions accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles? [29:52] What is happening in universities by way of innovation to drive renewable energy adoption? [39:27] Final comments about the topic from Wolfgang and Scott University campuses are huge energy consumers. Is it possible for them to use renewable energy? Most universities are strategizing around the use of renewable energy, both in terms of how to use more renewable energy for current needs, and how to increase the use of renewable energy through establishing their own sources of RE in the future. But there are many variables that either support or hinder the adoption of renewable energy in these institutions. One advantage is that universities are long-standing institutions, which provides stability and inertia that can be leveraged toward multi-year contracts with renewable energy companies. But other factors can make the adoption of renewable energy difficult. For example, many land grant institutions have the advantage of developing their own sources of renewable energy, while urban universities have less opportunity to do so. What are the drivers for adoption of renewable energy in higher education? For institutions of higher learning, as well as other large organizations, a choice no longer has to be made between environmental sustainability and fiscal sustainability. Both can be a reality. The levelized cost of large scale solar and wind power is now lower than that of fossil fuel generated power - even with the historically low cost of natural gas that has resulted from Fracking. For this reason, cost is a significant driving factor for the adoption of renewables at universities. But also, due to political pressure, more and more universities are making progressive pledges that put them at the forefront of the renewable energy stage. They want to be seen as leaders in this innovative and future-oriented field. As a result, many universities are entering into cooperative agreements with public sector organizations to bring the reality of renewable energy on campuses to life. Listen to hear more drivers for the adoption of renewable energy at these institutions. Renewable energy sourcing is not something universities are used to doing The adoption of renewable energy is challenging for universities because it’s not like any procurement the administration is used to doing. In the past, energy needs would simply be procured from the local utility company. But the marketplace has changed and now schools have many options for meeting their energy needs. And the transition from old energy models to renewable energy involves complex projects that require much foresight and planning, which often gets bogged down in committee.  But many universities are beginning to move in the right direction - restructuring their administration to take energy needs into account with the creation of administrative positions such as Director of Sustainability or Director of Energy and Utilities. As well, the use of third party consultants is becoming more commonplace since most universities don’t know exactly what they need when it comes to renewable energy. Consultants can help the institution get through the decision-making process in an informed way so they can more quickly lay out exactly what they need. This facilitates the bidding process to get adoption projects underway. The complex and multi-faceted needs of universities are driving innovation The fact that higher education is an intriguing market for developers and renewable energy contractors makes it a natural fit for universities to become laboratories for innovation in renewable energy - from a business model standpoint, from a financing standpoint, and from a technological standpoint. Partnerships between universities and renewable energy companies are becoming more and more common as a result. For example, REC Solar has developed a renewable energies lab at California Polytechnic University where students can learn, the educational offerings of the university are enhanced, and the team at REC is learning how to operate their own assets better. Over time, it’s almost certain that more and more evolutions of this kind will be created between private and public sector organizations to move the renewable energy movement forward.   There are so many topics discussed in this episode, you’ll want to hear the entire thing, so be sure you listen. In Part 3 of my four-part series on the work of the 9/11 Consensus Panel, I speak with David Chandler about the physics behind the collapse of the three World Trade Center Towers on September 11th, 2001. Why do the buildings look like they came down in controlled demolition by carefully placed explosives? "Because," says David, "That is what happened." He says, "I tell people, you can see what happened with your own eyes, by doing the physics, I am just proving that you're not crazy."The 9/11 Consensus Panel has just published its six-year investigation of best evidence consensus regarding the events surrounding the crimes that took place on September 11th, 2001. Their book released on September 11th, 2018 is called 9/11 Unmasked: An International Review Panel Investigation. Even the distribution of the book has not been without intrigue. While the book was printed and sent to Amazon for distribution by September 11th, the Amazon website (as of September 17th) still says the item is not in stock.  I pre-ordered my copy on August 14th and it arrived September 17th. The publisher says Amazon does have the books. 9/11 Unmasked may be ordered from the publisher, Interlink Books. Edward Curtin, who wrote a review of the book, also wrote a piece about this unusual action by Amazon, Amazon Censorship of 9/11 Unmasked.  Curtin writes:"Readers should demand that Amazon immediately change their website and accept orders to be shipped today. Whether they are responsible for this game of chaotic discouragement or the intelligence services, who are fully capable of hacking into Amazon, as Edward Snowden has pointed out, I do not know. But something very odd is happening and Amazon should correct it." Here also is a review from University of Sheffield Professor, Piers Robinson.David Chandler has a Bachelor of Science degree in physics from Harvey Mudd College, a Master of Arts in education, and a Master of Science in mathematics from California Polytechnic University. He recently retired from teaching physics, mathematics, and astronomy at the high school and college levels since 1972, and has now moved to Denver. Since about 2007 he has been active as a researcher with what he calls the "science wing" of the 9/11 Truth Movement. He is currently the Coordinator of Scientists for 9/11 Truth, and worked for several years with Architects and Engineers for 9/11 Truth. David became involved with the study of the building collapses of the World Trade Center when he realized he could use frame tracking software, which he used in his physics teaching, to measure the various velocities and accelerations associated with the 9/11 building collapses. He is best known for his measurements demonstrating the freefall of WTC 7, proving that NIST’s (National Institute for Science and Technology) claims were false. In its final report NIST changed its analysis of the motion of WTC 7, admitting freefall, but continued to deny its clear implications. David has authored and co-authored a number of scientific papers including "Destruction of the World Trade Center North Tower and Fundamental Physics." He has also created a large number of videos analyzing various aspects of the World Trade Center Collapses and presented them to the public on YouTube. He maintains a web site in collaboration with several other researchers, featuring their collected works, at 911SpeakOut.org.   Part 1: 9/11 Unmasked with Elizabeth Woodworth and Graeme McQueenPart 2: 9/11 Unmasked with Dwain Deets

About the time I was graduating from California Polytechnic University with a degree in Biology, I remember hearing for the first time President John Kennedy speaking “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.” I decided and was accepted to join the Peace Corps to teach high school Biology in Africa. Unfortunately, at the same time, the army was calling me to Vietnam. I decided to make my own choice and joined the Marine Corps as an infantry officer. During those life changing 13 months I spent in Vietnam I remember saying to myself, whatever I do the rest of my life had better make sense. When I returned home to the United States my search began to fulfill the promise I made to myself. Not knowing exactly what that was, I decided to spend a year exploring 17 countries in Europe on a 10-speed bicycle. This fueled my love of travel, culture, and history…the joy of just moving. I believe travel is the greatest university in the world. It is a fulfilling yet humbling experience to explore the cultures and history of our planet. For the next 7 years I would travel the globe as a Tour Director. When I returned to Europe leading tour groups, I met a whole new breed of professionally trained tour directors and guides. They could talk about art, food, wine, music, history, culture…they were like modern day Renaissance people. I found that most countries in Europe had national guide schools that trained people to be the “face of their country.” In America tour escorting was done mostly by college students as a temporary summer job or by a retired person to obtain a free trip. Starting a school for tour directors in America seemed pre-destined to be a goal that I would pursue. I wanted to ensure that tour directing was a recognized, respected profession and more importantly give others an avenue to pursue their passion for travel. So, in 1976, my friend and colleague Bill Newton and I started the first school in America to train tour directors and guides. I am proud of each one of the graduates that made the choice to follow their dream to teach, learn, and grow into the role of a Professional Tour Director and ultimately be called Ambassadors of Goodwill throughout the world. Even after all this time I still lead a few tours a year, when I am not instructing at ITMI. Tour Directing is still my passion… besides, I’m not going to let my students have all the fun!

100 Not So Famous Views of L.A. (Prospect Park Books) Join us tonight for a very special visual presentation by local painter Barbara Thomason. For four years, artist Barbara Thomason roamed her beloved Los Angeles, seeking the vistas, nooks, bridges, signs, streets, and landmarks that most captivated her. Inspired by the color, compositions, and tonal changes of Hiroshige's acclaimed print series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, this grand project resulted in one hundred paintings, all of which Thomason executed in Cel-Vinyl to resemble woodblock ink in texture and tone. Each of these original paintings have now been beautifully reproduced and are accompanied by the artist's personal commentary and historical insight about her subject matter—an alchemical mix that results in a unique and splendid tour of the vibrancy, quirkiness, charm, and essential personality of a great American city. Praise for 100 Not So Famous Views of L.A. “This is Los Angeles without its history of forgetting, no longer rootless, placeless, but instead, through Thomason's transforming imagination, the embodiment of place.”—David L. Ulin, Los Angeles Times book critic (from the Foreword) “Everyone who loves L.A. is going to want this book. Once you get the idea, it becomes addicting—you're compelled to pore over each page. She had me at Felix, the strangely ironic cat that lorded over all of my really awful late-night food choices as an undergrad at USC. It's the perfect hostess/Christmas/Hanukkah/Kwanzaa/anyone who lives in or has ever loved L.A. gift.” —Greg Freitas, Traveler's Bookcase (Los Angeles, CA) Barbara Thomason is a Los Angeles-based artist and professor of printmaking, sculpture, and painting at California Polytechnic University, Pomona. Her paintings, drawings, and prints have been shown in exhibitions at many galleries, museums, and universities.
