In this Bell Work Talk, Dr. O'Briant will discuss that violence and abuse in rural America is exacerbated by limited access to support services for victims of intimate partner violence (IPV) due to family connections with people in positions of authority, geographic isolation, transportation barriers, stigma of abuse, lack of available shelters and affordable housing, poverty as a barrier to care, and other challenges. Victims of abuse who live in small communities may be well-acquainted with local health care providers and often voter-elected law enforcement officers. Individuals may fear being seen walking into a mental health clinic, with subsequent (and reality-based) fear that deter them from seeking help. Thus, advances in technology are becoming a much-needed option. Although telehealth has been used for some time in rural health settings, only in more recent years has there been an increase toward quality trauma-informed care. With increasing focus on the impact of social determinants of health, agencies continue to shift to telehealth to provide virtual support. Specifically, telehealth visits can potentially extend the reach of the limited number of primary care and mental health providers to those who are significantly in need of services. Deborah O'Briant is a nursing educator with over 20 years as an RN and 13 years of experience as a family nurse practitioner working in a variety of clinical settings, including the Emergency Room. She currently teaches at Texas A&M University College of Nursing and is the coordinator for the Family Nurse Practitioner Master degree (MSN) program and the interim coordinator for the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program. She has a strong interest in rural healthcare and helps provide care to women in underserved communities in Texas using grant funds awarded to Texas A&M College of Nursing. A new research paper was published in Oncotarget's Volume 14 on March 24, 2023, entitled, “Polyisoprenylated cysteinyl amide inhibitors deplete singly polyisoprenylated monomeric G-proteins in lung and breast cancer cell lines.” Finding effective therapies against cancers driven by mutant and/or overexpressed hyperactive G-proteins remains an area of active research. Polyisoprenylated cysteinyl amide inhibitors (PCAIs) are agents that mimic the essential posttranslational modifications of G-proteins. It is hypothesized that PCAIs work as anticancer agents by disrupting polyisoprenylation-dependent functional interactions of the G-Proteins. In their new study, researchers Nada Tawfeeq, Jassy Mary S. Lazarte, Yonghao Jin, Matthew D. Gregory, and Nazarius S. Lamango from Florida A&M University College of Pharmacy Pharmaceutical Sciences and Imam Abdulrahman bin Faisal University tested this hypothesis by determining the effect of the PCAIs on the levels of RAS and related monomeric G-proteins. “To investigate the hypothesized anticancer mechanisms of the PCAIs through disruption of G-protein function, we checked the effects of the PCAIs on the G-protein levels in lung cancer (A549 and NCI-H1299) and breast cancer (MDA-MB-231 and MDA-MB-468) cell lines.” Following 48 hours of exposure, they found significant decreases in the levels of KRAS, RHOA, RAC1, and CDC42 ranging within 20–66% after NSL-YHJ-2-27 (5 μM) treatment in all four cell lines tested, A549, NCI-H1299, MDA-MB-231, and MDA-MB-468. However, no significant difference was observed on the G-protein, RAB5A. Interestingly, 38 and 44% decreases in the levels of the farnesylated and acylated NRAS were observed in the two breast cancer cell lines, MDA-MB-231, and MDA-MB-468, respectively, while HRAS levels showed a 36% decrease only in MDA-MB-468 cells. Moreover, after PCAIs treatment, migration, and invasion of A549 cells were inhibited by 72 and 70%, respectively while the levels of vinculin and fascin dropped by 33 and 43%, respectively. Their results show that PCAIs deplete the protein levels of some significant G-proteins which are known to be involved in the migration and invasion of cells (i.e., metastasis) such as RAC1, RHOA, and CDC42. These findings implicate the potential role of PCAIs as anticancer agents through their direct interaction with monomeric G-proteins. “The initial findings presented here indicate how PCAIs can be used as potent agents in developing new anticancer therapeutics, therefore, more extensive studies need to be done to elucidate on its potency. Although we cannot conclusively explain the exact mechanism of action of PCAIs on how they affect the levels of some G-proteins yet, but we can say that these PCAIs have the ability to affect the progression of cancer.” Research paper: DOI: https://doi.org/10.18632/oncotarget.28390 Correspondence to: Nazarius S. Anyone who studies the risks and benefits of this vaccine should realize that if you are under 50 or have already contracted the virus, it’s not worth the risk to get the vaccine. Dr. Peter McCullough, a clinical cardiologist and professor of medicine at Texas A&M University College of Medicine, Dallas, warns today that the government is not telling us the truth about the side effects of the vaccine and is also dramatically overstating the efficacy. There is a reason the CDC is suddenly promising to take away the mask mandate and states are paying people to get the vaccine. They are desperate, because people are catching on. "I always laughed in the past like, 'You could never do vet school online. You have to do labs multiple times a week, we need to learn to suture, we need to learn to do surgery…' And I just remember having this moment of fear when they were like, 'online vet school.' And I wasn’t sure what that was going to look like." Being a veterinary student is hard enough with keeping up with coursework, attending labs, gaining surgical skills and securing externships. When Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine closed its physical campus in the spring semester of 2020 due to the pandemic, students were faced with additional challenges and forced to adapt to these changes. Second-year veterinary student Morgan Gunn and third-year veterinary student Carley Johnson discuss how they adjusted, honed their surgical skills at home, stayed connected with their peers and networked with future employers.Support the show (http://www.tvma.org)

"Being Hispanic and trying to get into veterinary school is difficult. My big thing is I just needed someone to look past my last name."Born to immigrant parents, Dr. Victor Lopez faced multiple barriers to achieving his dream of becoming a veterinarian. Those challenges included his parents' language barrier, few resources, a Latino last name and three rejections from Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine. "As a business owner in a rural area, I'm going, 'Dang it. I need another veterinarian.' And right now, they aren't easy to come by."There is a shortage of rural veterinarians in Texas. This means recruiting and retaining veterinarians out in the country is difficult. Drs. Carol and Joe Hillhouse, who own two mixed animal practices in Texas, outline those hurdles in this episode. A couple of those obstacles include mounting student loan debt paired with lower salaries and a lifestyle that doesn't align with the needs of female veterinarians, which comprise the majority of practitioners in the profession. They also give ideas about what can be done to overcome these obstacles. Drs. Carol and Joe Hillhouse own Carson County Veterinary Clinic in Panhandle and High Plains Animal Hospital in Borger. They graduated from Texas A&M University-College of Veterinary Medicine in 1984 and have been married for 36 years. It's not so much change in the profession itself but cultural change."The rapid gender shift in the profession occurred within a matter of just 13 years, from 1980 to 1993. This development created cultural challenges, specifically for women. Drs. Lori Teller and Nancy Turner outline those hurdles in this episode. A few of those obstacles include minimal childcare and rooms for new mothers at veterinary conferences and clients assuming female veterinarians are veterinary assistants or licensed veterinary technicians. This episode illustrates how far veterinary medicine has come and that there is still much more to be done to meet the needs of all veterinarians. Dr. Lori Teller is a past TVMA president of both the Texas and Harris County Veterinary Medical Associations and currently serves on the AVMA Board of Directors. Dr. Teller works at the Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine as the Clinical Associate Professor of Telehealth. Dr. Nancy Turner served on the TVMA Board of Directors for Dallas County and on the TVMA Executive Committee. She works for ReadiVet, an in-home health care provider. Many medical providers had telehealth as a tool for conducting virtual patient visits, but patients and providers had not had much need or desire to use it. Until now. The pandemic hit hard in mid-March, and the shelter-in-home orders pushed medical practices to find ways to treat patients without seeing them in their offices. Can telehealth rise to the occasion to meet the medical treatment needs using virtual visits? And if it can, will doctors, nurse practitioners, and more importantly, patients continue to use it? Let’s find out.Our guest today, Dr Chris Clark, is an experienced family medicine specialist in the Dallas area, and he has been practicing medicine for 26 years. He graduated from The Texas A&M University College of Medicine in 1994 and is currently affiliated with Baylor Scott & White Medical Center.I recently got introduced to Dr. Clark, and I was intrigued by how his practice went through the transformation journey to tele-health. It was amazing to learn about “what matters” to a medical facility in deciding which technology is available and, more importantly, what is viable for virtual medical visits services. My goal today is to learn more about their journey with you and discuss the alignment gaps that still exist in making telehealth mainstream.
In our final installment of our miniseries for recent graduates, we sit down with Bethany Weinheimer, DVM. She graduated in 2018 from Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Weinheimer talks about what it felt like walking across the stage to receive her diploma and introducing herself as Dr. Weinheimer to clients for the first time. She also shares the challenges of being a recent graduate and overcoming those obstacles. Some of those challenges are finding community in a new city and clients expressing skepticism because she looks so young. To get through these hurdles, she turns to humor, meditation, exercise, and the Power of 10 Program. She also shares what it’s like working overnight shifts in ER medicine at Veterinary Emergency Group (VEG) in Fort Worth, the highs and lows of handling critical cases and the sacrifices she has to make in her personal life. "It's important that we ask women. Sometimes women want to do it, but they are not sure if they would be welcome."While the demographics of the veterinary medicine profession have shifted over the past 30 years from one comprised mostly of men to one that is majority female, something hasn't kept up with this trend: leadership. Only one-third of the TVMA Board of Directors is made up of women, and it wasn't until this year that the TVMA Executive Committee has more women than men. In this episode, Lori Teller, DVM, and Nancy Turner, DVM, explore why this trend exists and what we can do to help more women take on leadership roles in the profession. Dr. Lori Teller is a past president of both the Texas and Harris County Veterinary Medical Associations and currently serves on the AVMA Board of Directors. Dr. Teller works at Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine as the Clinical Associate Professor of Telehealth.Dr. Nancy Turner served on the TVMA Board of Directors for Dallas County and recently stepped down from her post on the Executive Committee. In this episode, Renee Nicole Allen, Assistant Professor of Legal Writing at St. John's University School of Law, Alicia Jackson, Associate Dean for Student Learning and Assessment at Florida A&M University College of Law, and DeShun Harris, Assistant Clinical Professor of Law and Director of Bar Preparation at the University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law, discuss their article "The 'Pink Ghetto' Pipeline: Challenges and Opportunities for Women in Legal Education," which is published in the University of Detroit Mercy Law Review. Here is the abstract:The demographics of law schools are changing and women make up the majority of law students. Yet, the demographics of many law faculties do not reflect these changing demographics with more men occupying faculty seats. In legal education, women predominately occupy skills positions, including legal writing, clinic, academic success, bar preparation, or library. According to a 2010 Association of American Law Schools survey, the percentage of female lecturers and instructors is so high that those positions are stereotypically female. The term coined for positions typically held by women is “pink ghetto.” According to the Department of Labor, pink-collar-worker describes jobs and career areas historically considered “women’s work,” and included on the list is teaching. However, in legal education, tenured and higher-ranked positions are held primarily by men, while women often enter legal education through non-tenured and non-faculty skills-based teaching pipelines. In a number of these positions, women experience challenges like poor pay, heavy workloads, and lower status such as by contract, nontenure, or at will. While many may view this as a challenge, looking at these positions solely as a “pink ghetto” diminishes the many contributions women have made to legal education through the skills faculty pipelines. Conversely, we miss the opportunity to examine how legal education has changed and how women have accepted the challenge of being on the front line of educating this new generation of learners while enthusiastically adopting the American Bar Association’s new standards for assessment and student learning. There is an opportunity for women to excel in these positions if we provide them with allies who champion for equal status and provide the requisite support. This article focuses on the changing gender demographics of legal education, legal education pipelines, and the role and status of women in higher education with an emphasis on legal education. The final section applies feminist pedagogy to address challenges, opportunities, and aspirations for women in legal education.Allen is on Twitter at @profallentweets, Jackson is on Twitter at @deanjacksonlaw, and Harris is on Twitter at @deshunharris5.This episode was hosted by Jennifer L. In this episode…Professor Renee Allen, Assistant Professor of Legal Writing at St. John’s School of Law, explains the most fundamental concept of exam writing; IRAC. IRAC stands for Issue, Rule, Analysis, Conclusion and it is the ideal framework for thinking about legal issues, writing legal memorandum, and most important to law students, Some key takeaways are: 1. The A in IRAC gets the most points on an exam2. When answering an exam, always explain the “why.” Why does this fact matter to proving your point?3. Tune in for our first showdown at the AHH corral. Join us as host Laura Davis interviews her husband architect Bob Davis about the differences and similarities between commercial architecture and residential architecture. This episode will be of special interest to architecture students and interns. Please note: No marriages were harmed in the making of this podcast. In this Episode In Episode 74 of The Architecture Happy Hour Podcast, Laura interviews Bob Davis, Project Architect at HDR Architecture, Inc. in Dallas, Texas. Bob specializes in commercial and institutional architecture. He also happens to be our host Laura Davis' husband. Here's what we learned: Architects are like athletes in that different specialties and different sports represent and utilize very different temperaments, skill sets, and interests. Where he lived growing up and what experiences that lead him to choose a career in architecture. Which mentor at Texas A&M University influenced Bob to study critical regionalism. How to succeed as an intern in a large office. What skill sets are good to have in a large commercial office vs. a small residential firm. Two architects can serve different client types, and each contribute in important ways. Notable and Shareable Take Aways Bob has lived in Dayton, Ohio; Albuquerque, New Mexico; Springfield, Virginia, San Antonio, College Station, and Dallas, Texas. All very different areas of the US and all contribute to how he appreciates and thinks about buildings and landscapes. Critical Regionalism is an approach to architecture that places importance on the geography and local culture of the place. Bob was introduced to the concept by a professor named Vincent Canizaro, Ph.D. who now has published several works on the subject and teaches at University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). Advice to Architectural Interns: Make an impact and go extra mile to get noticed, you won't get lost as an intern (and be doomed to do toilet plans forever). Everything is important on a job, do the best of whatever you are asked to do. The very best interns don't dig themselves into a hole or hide at their desk. They engage. Every drawing is related to every other drawing. Nothing happens in a vacuum. The best interns realize they are part of something big. Even the most minor details can have huge impact on everything else. Every line on a page means something - be thoughtful about your work. In a residential office you have to do a little of everything, which is also how you learn. In a small residential firm, your mentor is usually the firm owner. As opposed to in a large commercial office where your mentor might be a project manager in your department. Keep ear buds out - listen to everything around you, soak in everything you can learn. Skills of a good architect are universal regardless of specialty: listening, asking thoughtful questions, being resourceful. It's the exposure to different design problems, the desire to serve a different client and community, and the scale of the projects that starts to divide those who gravitate towards commercial vs. residential. If you desire to make an impact on as many people as possible with the public buildings you design, you might be a (future) commercial architect. If you desire to help a family, couple, or individual home owner live their best life in their home, you might be a (future) residential architect.
