My name is Dr. Jennifer Remnes and my undergraduate studies were completed at the University of Illinois at Champaign- Urbana. I double majored in Molecular and Cellular Biology and Psychology with a minor in Chemistry. Believe it or not, I was on a pre-med track throughout college and planned to apply to medical school. I quickly realized humans are gross, and I am way more passionate about animals. I was inducted into the Phi Zeta National Veterinary Honor Society in 2014. I graduated from St. George's University School of Veterinary Medicine in 2015 following completion of my clinical year at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. The wonderful small town of Chambana gifted me with endless country nights at Kams I'll never remember with friends I'll never forget. The small Spice Island of Grenada will forever remain a second home for me. I was fortunate enough to experience an authentic Caribbean culture, obtain a PADI scuba certification and bring home the world's most handsome souvenir—my heart dog and Papillon, Nutmeg.  I was born and raised in Chicago, IL. Yes, Chicago, Chicago—not the burbs. I grew up a few miles west of Wrigley Field, and I'm absolutely ecstatic that I witnessed a Cubs World Series championship within my lifetime. Hey Chicago, what do you say? I live in the Windy City with my husband, Brad, and our Great Pyrenees rescue, Ophelia. Hi! My name is Dr. Jessica Trice! I graduated from Waubonsee Community College with an associate degree in Biological Sciences. I then received a bachelor's degree at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana in Animal Science and Agricultural Consumer and Environmental Sciences. I graduated from Tuskegee University School of Veterinary Medicine. My multifaceted career has led me to wear many various hats in veterinary medicine, including Chief of Staff and Medical Director. I have also served as a member of the Medical Advisory Board for the Midwest and led a Mentorship Program for veterinary students and new DVM graduates. I proudly collaborated with Banfield Pet Hospital and co-authored a children's book called "My Very, Very Busy Day." You may have also viewed one of my many television media segments featuring pet current events, health and preventative care. My long time passion of incorporating integrative medicine with conventional veterinary medicine finally became a reality when I received my certification of Veterinary Acupuncture along with Herbal Medicine through the Chi Institute. Additionally, I also earned certification as a Veterinary Chiropractor in the specialized area of Applied Kinesiology through the Health Pioneer Institute. Together, we can take a whole-pet approach to your pet's therapy. My collaborative techniques blend Western medicine with holistic approaches to treatment.

This is Dr. Neal Sivula. I'm a veterinarian and owner of Dancing Paws Animal Wellness Center, a holistic veterinary practice located in beautiful Richfield, Ohio. Today I'll answer the question- "I love acupuncture for myself, can I get it for my pet?" Of course, you can! The basic acupuncture certification program for Veterinarians in the United States is a post-graduate course, usually around 200 hours in length. We learn Traditional Chinese Medicine theory, acupuncture point locations, case management, and in some courses, students study herbal medicine as well. Some courses only teach TCM, others teach a combination of TCM and Medical Acupuncture, and some teach Medical Acupuncture exclusively. All courses offer a certification examination upon completion of the course and most require internship hours with a certified doctor and the submission of a few case reports to verify that the candidate can think logically through an acupuncture case.  Like our human acupuncture colleagues, the basic training is only the start of our journey in acupuncture. Our certifications require that we participate in approved continuing education courses in acupuncture. These range in topic from refresher courses on basic acupuncture theory all the way to instruction in other techniques like the Balance Method or Scalp Acupuncture, or in other philosophies like Classical Chinese Medicine. Certification is just a jumping off point for every acupuncturist I know, continual education makes us better acupuncturists.  Once trained, veterinarians use acupuncture in all sorts of ways in their practice. I am fortunate in that I am able to limit my practice to holistic medicine, while other doctors may offer acupuncture as something that they provide alongside their allopathic services. So how should one find an acupuncturist for their pet? That can be a little complicated, as we don't have a centralized database for all veterinary acupuncturists. Resources that provide practitioner location services include the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association, the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society, the American Academy of Veterinary Acupuncture, Chi University, Curacore Academy, the Canine Rehabilitation Institute, and the College of Integrative Veterinary Therapies. Of course, doctors that are seeking acupuncture patients will have that service listed on their practice websites as well.  If you're interested in hearing more about holistic veterinary medicine, I host “The Integrative Veterinarian" podcast where I have conversations with veterinarians and discuss their training and their lives as holistic practitioners. Acupuncture is as powerful in our animal friends as it is in humans, so don't forget to consider acupuncture when thinking about your pet's health!  Thanks for listening and be sure to tune in next week for the next Essential Point.  https://everyday-acupuncture.captivate.fm/teaforme (ECO-CHA ) Mentioned in this episode: https://everyday-acupuncture.captivate.fm/teaforme (ECO-CHA )

Guest: Dr. Allen Schoen Some of our deepest heart connections are with our pets. Whether it's a dog, cat, bird, hamster or other animal, the love and care we exchange with our pets is supportive and healing for us and for them. This undeniable energetic heart exchange with our pets is the focus of this podcast episode. Dr. Allen Schoen, our podcast guest, is a pioneer of holistic veterinary medicine and recognized as one of the most influential veterinarians worldwide for introducing an integrative approach to veterinary medicine. Dr. Schoen and our host, Deborah Rozman, explore this amazing energetic heart connection between people and pets. The therapeutic benefits associated with human-pet bonding aren't new. In fact, research has shown this powerful bond can help decrease stress, regulate breathing, lower blood pressure, and release oxytocin—a hormone associated with love. Dr. Schoen's research exploring the heart-to-heart connection of the human-pet bond suggests that without the healing power of the love of animals that uplifts people's lives, the world would be an even more stressed-out place. Animal lovers will enjoy hearing about the heart-rhythm synchronization that happens when people send love to their pets. Deborah explains these findings that come out of the HeartMath® Institute. Dr. Schoen also talks about Trans Species Field Theory: An energetic field created by the thoughts and emotions of humans and animals interacting with each other. This episode will leave you with a deeper appreciation and understanding of how we benefit energetically from the love we share with pets and how this can contribute to a healthier, happier, more conscious and harmonious world. The episode closes with a heart meditation on how our collective heart energy can help increase understanding and cooperation between humans and our animal friends. About our guest: Dr. Schoen is one of the pioneers of holistic, integrative veterinary medicine. He has been acknowledged by his peers as one of the fifteen most influential veterinarians in North America as well as worldwide for introducing the concept of an integrative approach to veterinary medicine. He's authored seven books including Complementary & Alternative Veterinary Medicine; Love, Miracles, and Animal Healing; and Kindred Spirits, and he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Association of Veterinary Acupuncture for his groundbreaking contributions to veterinary acupuncture. His new project C.A.L.M. (Conscious Animal Lovers Movement) is his approach to helping all animal lovers co-create a healthier, happier, more harmonious world.

Jill Todd, DVM, CVA, CVCP, Holistic Veterinarian began her undergraduate training in Biological Science, Botany, and Agriculture – "the long route," if you ask her. However, she wanted to understand medicine at its core, so she started at plants. After earning her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine and a BS in Veterinary Science, Jill worked in a small animal emergency clinic then purchased Animal Care Clinic in San Marcos, Texas – a private practice that she owned and operated for 10 years. Jill talks about merging veterinary training with complementary therapies in this episode, including aromatherapy and hemp. When her dog, Tally Ho, was not recovering from surgery alone, Jill began experimenting with holistic therapies in desperation. They worked. This launched Jill into a whole new healing path. She went back to school and became certified in Veterinary Acupuncture and became a Veterinary Chiropractitioner with advanced training in Veterinary Cold Laser Therapy. Jill then sold her practice in 2008 and moved to the Pacific Northwest, where she launched J Todd Veterinary Acupuncture and Complementary Veterinary Medicine. While in the PNW, Jill discovered aromatherapy and essential oils. She started to use them at home, on herself and her animals. Jill found the power of plants could help relax and heal herself, her animals, and eventually her clients. Jill's search for healing animals has resulted in a robust and diverse skill set that expands far beyond veterinary qualifications. Her ability to read animals at a soul and energetic level – to pick up on their pain, anxiety, fear, or aggression – wasn't learned in school. It's an intuitive gift that remains one of life's beautiful mysteries, a gift that Jill humbly uses to serve animals. When she later discovered the powerful healing effects of hemp extract on her own animals, she knew it had to be incorporated into her practice. Today Jill works out of her home in Kirkland, WA healing animals, teaching acupressure and meridian touch therapy virtually, and virtually consulting worldwide. J Squared Healing was created to help heal animals energetically, starting with nutrition and using the best of both worlds, eastern and western veterinary medicine. Holistic veterinary medicine is Jill's passion and pride. I started this episode thinking we would be talking about lions, tigers and bears. But we ended up with glial cells, learning and neuroplasticity. Just like in clinic there are often surprising things that show up, and so too it is podcast conversations. In this conversation we start with veterinarian acupuncture. But then take a hard right and go deep into neuroscience, the treatment of pain, nervous system regulation and how medicine is beautiful. I loved our discussion as it ranged from the clinical ‘how-to’s” of working with animals, to the deep science of neurobiology, and all woven together with a sense of inquiry and appreciation for the beauty of nature and the practice of medicine.   Head on over to the show notes page for more information about this episode and for links to the resources discussed in the interview.
