Debut Florida Author Brings the Magic City to Jacksonville "I am, first and foremost, a Miamian. No physical location has done more to shape my personal and artistic sensibilities than the Magic City," Alejandro Nodarse said in a recent interview. "Miami is, unquestionably, very different from its neighboring Floridan cities, and I am a product of that high energy, heavy neon, fiercely multicultural coastal city." Critics seem to agree... This deeply personal vision of the streets and swamps of Miami is getting some attention, with Publisher's Weekly saying, "Heat practically radiates off the page." Nodarse went on to say, "The creative impulses that fueled the novel were heavily inspired by texts that, in their own right, are some of the best examples of how Florida has defined itself in the national consciousness." Alejandro Nodarse holds an MFA from the University of Miami and is an alum of Las Dos Brujas Writers Conference and a former staff member of the VONA Writers Conference. Blood in the Cut is his debut novel. Interviewer Michael Wiley is the Shamus Award-winning author of twelve novels in four series. The most recent series features Franky Dast, an exonerated convict who investigates crimes involving the unjustly accused. Michael's short stories appear often in magazines and anthologies, including Best Mystery Stories of the Year 2022. A former board member of the Mystery Writers of America, he teaches creative writing and literature at the University of North Florida. His new novel, Find Your Own Way Home, will release this summer at the end of July. READ Check out Blood in the Cut from the Library! -- https://jkpl.ent.sirsi.net/client/en_US/default/search/results?qu=AUTHOR%3D%22alejandro+nodarse%22&te=  ALEJANDRO RECOMMENDS Here are the top Florida-themed works of art that helped hone Blood in the Cut: Moonlight directed by Barry Jenkins "Few films are so Miami-as-it-is and Miami-as-it-should-be as Moonlight. In early drafts of Blood in the Cut, Chiron served as a model for Carlos, my protagonist Iggy's brother, and while Carlos's character arc fell to the background, Chiron, Jenkins's Miami, and the rugged determination of the characters to find their lanes in life held steady as I wrote." The Orchid Thief by Susan Orlean "This book is everything I love rolled into one: Mystery, adventure, botany, orchids, the Everglades—what more could you want!? Orlean weaves a tale for readers that examines the lengths that some will go to feed their passions and find rare orchids. It's this combination of beautiful, deep descriptions, unbreakable determination, love of the Everglades, and eye for detail that I hoped to capture in Blood in the Cut." The Florida Project directed by Sean Baker "Throughout the film, Moonee is far wiser than any six-year-old should be, but because of it, she takes everything in stride. I wanted my protagonist, Iggy, to embody that same sort of steely determination as his situation deteriorated. Like any Floridians worthy of the name, both Moonee and Iggy are adept at “resolviendo”, a Spanish word that loosely translates to “making things happen”, and this is what allows us to hope against all hope when things are darkest for them both. " Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston "The tumultuous external landscape that Janie must navigate throughout the novel mirrors her internal turbulence, and that sort of well-rendered, thoughtful characterization is a literary feat I desperately hoped to accomplish as I crafted my characters, especially Iggy." Cocaine Cowboys directed by Billy Corben "Corben's skill at recreating a bygone era and fully immersing audiences is something I've always marveled at and wanted to achieve in Blood in the Cut, which is set in Miami in 2016, just as the presidential elections are taking shape." Gator Country by Rebecca Renner "I think of this book as Blood in the Cut's nonfiction aspirational counterpart because of how beautifully Renner renders the Everglades and the worlds it contains within. One goal I set for myself as I was writing my novel was to treat the Everglades as a character by rendering it as elegantly, vividly, and faithfully in terms of scope, beauty, danger, and primordial, elemental mood. Gator Country forced me to step my game up as I rendered the Everglades in my work." Ace Ventura: Pet Detective directed by Tom Shadyac "I'd like to go on the record and state that the protagonist of this eponymous, comedic whodunit, Ace Ventura, is the original Florida Man. This film is part mystery, part comedy, part love letter to Miami: a tryptic of accomplishments that inspired some key elements of Blood in the Cut." Swamplandia! By Karen Russell "This book. All of it. The way that Russell lures readers into the Everglades and into the lives of the Big Tree family is the magic I pray for every time I crack open a book. This coming-of-age mediation on love, loss, and “resolviendo” is one of the reasons Blood in the Cut exists." --- Never miss an event! Cut To The Chase:
Dennis Scholl's Life Story and Latest Chapter of Life- MAKING ART

Cut To The Chase:

Play Episode Listen Later May 8, 2024 52:46

Join us for an inspiring episode of Cut to the Chase: podcast as we dive into the latest chapter of Dennis Scholl's career.    From accountant, lawyer, preservationalist, serial entrepreneur, philanthropist, art collector, award winning film maker, wine maker, to helping artists advance their careers, what else could be left for him to achieve but to make his own art (and films).    How could anyone make so many significant career transitions?   On this episode, we go through some of Dennis' philosophies that helped him transform himself in such significant ways.   But before we go onto his third and (what he predicts) will be his final chapter-his own art work, I must pay my respect to Dennis and do what he prefers I not do-highlight some of his amazing achievements which have shaped so many lives and the art world.    The Miami art scene has become a global phenomenom in large part due to Dennis.      From 2009-2015, Dennis was the vice president for the arts at the Knight Foundation.   Launching the foundations arts program and leading it to national prominence, Dennis helped steer close to $200 million in grants to artists and cultural organizations.   Helping these artists launch and advance their careers has been one of Dennis' biggest joys in life.   Almost out of left field, Dennis decided to take what many of us would consider a mid life crisis into a remarkable journey into documentary film making.    Before the world knew it, Dennis had become an award-winning documentary filmmaker focusing on arts and culture creating 87 films and winning over 20 regional Emmys, including from Sundance and SXSW.   His films have been shown in over 100 film festivals.   You can even catch some of his films on Netflix.   My favorite was his first feature documentary called Deep City-the Birth of Miami Sound.    For those R & B fans that think Motown WAS R & B, think again.   Deep City showcases some of the amazing musical R & B talent that came from the 305. In almost a parallel universe while making these films (and wine), Dennis was brought into Oolite Arts as their CEO where he ran that amazing art support organization where he continued to help award millions of dollars to local artists.    One of the major accomplishments he achieved at Oolite Arts was the creation of the Ellies.    The Ellies, named after Ellie Schneiderman, who opened the South Florida Art Center back in 1984 when Lincoln Road could not even find tenants.   The Ellies is now an annual competition which funds local art teachers, artists projects, exhibitions, public artworks and even film. His farewell achievement for Oolite will be the opening of the  soon to be state of the art $30 million headquarters that is scheduled to open in Little River in 2025.     The space will provide, among other things, 21 free artists studios, rooms for art classes, a theatre and large gallery.  In this episode, we'll explore Dennis's journey from being an accountant, then a lawyer to becoming a pivotal figure in the Miami art scene to his current art work and upcoming films. Discover how he embraced a new chapter in his life, reinventing himself as an art collector turned filmmaker, and gain insights into his views on the future of art in the age of AI.   I know Dennis right now is upset at us rehashing his past so I won't go over all his amazing and various work (including his extremely successful wine making venture) and his various contributions to world art world, including the Guggenheim, the Tate Modern and the Perez Art Museum.   Instead of going into  all the amazing art work he has created over the past decade and continues to create AND his upcoming films AND his own philosophies that have enabled him to transform himself so dramatically so often, you will need to listen to this episode for such nuggets.    As a native Miamian who has seen first hand how Dennis has helped make Miami so special, myself and several others owe him the tremendous gratitude. Join Dennis and I as we discuss: Dennis's transition from law to the arts and its profound impact on his life and career. The importance of embracing change and pursuing passions later in life. Fostering creativity and innovation.. The evolving landscape of filmmaking and the influence of AI.Dennis's commitment to nurturing young artistic talent and giving back to the community. His skepticism about the long-term impact of NFTs on the art world. Key Takeaways: Embrace change and pursue your passions, no matter your age. Find activities that bring you joy and fulfillment, embracing the concept of "flow" in life. Get involved in your community and share your expertise and inspiration with others. Consider integrating cultural insights into your legal practice for innovative problem-solving. Stay open to learning and flexible in your career path to adapt to new industries and technologies. Join us for a fascinating conversation with Dennis Scholl as we explore the power of reinvention and the endless possibilities that await, even in the later chapters of life. The Opperman Report
Did An O.J. Simpson Accomplice confess?

There's a script circulating in Hollywood about the night of June 12, 1994. It begins in the affluent Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles. The narrator, an ex-con from Miami named Charlie, approaches a cottage-style mansion on Rockingham Avenue and sees O.J. Simpson chipping golf balls on the lawn behind the gate. The man calls out "Juice!" and Simpson welcomes him through the gate. Simpson's happy to see his friend, but Charlie's here on business. He says "Joey" sent him to collect cocaine debts, many of them related to the celebrity football player's ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and more so, her best friend, Faye Resnick. Simpson reacts with fury to being squeezed for money, and the target of that anger is Brown. He's scheduled to leave for the airport in less than an hour for a flight to Chicago, but Simpson decides he's going to confront his ex-wife at her home on Bundy Drive. I support New Times Broward-Palm Beach New Times Broward-Palm Beach Local Community Journalism Support the independent voice of South Florida and help keep the future of New Times free. Support Us With Charlie in tow, he drives his white Ford Bronco to the alley behind Brown's home, where blood is soon spilled in great quantity. The premise might sound preposterous. The history of that terrible night has long been seared into America's consciousness. There wasn't some Miami mob grunt with O.J. Simpson the night Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman were brutally knifed to death. The Los Angeles Police Department and District Attorney's Office couldn't have missed that Simpson had an accomplice, could they? Charlie is based on a real Miamian, Charles "Charlie" Ehrlich, an ex-drug trafficker and longtime manager at Dean's Gold, a glitzy strip club on 163rd Street and Biscayne Boulevard in North Miami Beach. If fiction is the lie through which we tell the truth, then the script, titled Juiced, after Simpson's nickname, may shed new light on the events of that gruesome night. Or it could be an elaborate ploy to profit off one of the most notorious crimes in history. Fact or fiction, it's one of those outlandish tales where the deeper you dig, the less crazy it seems. Charlie Denizens of Dean's Gold might notice a roundish, 67-year-old bald guy walking around the place like he owns it. Charles Ehrlich doesn't own the club, but he's helped run it for years. These days, Ehrlich is head of marketing and promotion, routinely posing for social-media photos. He cozies up to exotic dancers at the bar. He flashes his grin in the parking lot with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Rob Corddry after the pair shot some scenes for an episode of the HBO show Ballerz. He shares a laugh with Dennis Rodman. In older photos that have nothing to do with Dean's, Ehrlich smiles with his longtime friend O.J. Simpson. While his presence on the night of the murders is open for debate, he was definitely with Simpson during the sports-memorabilia robbery in Las Vegas in 2007 that landed the former football star in prison for nine years. Ehrlich was also convicted in the case but did no jail time. He still sounds defensive about it. "O.J. did nine years for something he should have done six months for," he says. As for his own involvement, he says he was present during the impromptu hotel-room heist only because Simpson was a friend and asked him to come along. "I made a mistake," Ehrlich says. "I never should have been in that room. Hindsight is 20/20. It was dumb. It was stupid. I never should have been there." He told a similar story during interviews with CNN, ABC, and other news outlets when Simpson was up for parole and eventually freed in 2017. "If it's believed" — "it" being the 'Juiced' version of the murder — "it immediately puts [Charlie] in prison. There's no statute of limitations on murder. Hence our dilemma." tweet this But when it comes to the reason for this phone call — the night of June 12, 1994 — Ehrlich clams up tighter than a cherrystone. "I don't want to go there, no disrespect," he says. "I don't want to talk about the past. That's the past. I don't want to go there." Yet Juiced, a copy of which New Times obtained from a self-described whistleblower, is filled with information about Ehrlich's past. The script recounts a childhood in Manhattan with a stepfather tied to mobster Meyer Lansky and the underworld. After some trouble with police as a teen, he's exiled to Miami, where he quickly becomes involved in the drug trade, gets the street name "Charlie Tuna" and eventually serves time in prison before going to LA. The script's author is a Los Angeles film producer named Erik Laibe. Reached by phone, Laibe says he optioned the story from Ehrlich about five years ago and owns the story rights for the next five years as well. He says he's still "vetting" Ehrlich's claims. He declined to speak in any detail with New Times, warning of an intellectual-property lawsuit if the paper reported on the script. "It's an interesting mental exercise," says Laibe of trying to determine Erhlich's involvement, or lack thereof, in the murders. "What the truth is — who knows?" Laibe points out the obvious: If Ehrlich truly was involved, he could face serious legal exposure. "What is Charlie's motivation in all of this? Money," Laibe posits with certainty. "If it's believed" — "it" being the Juiced version of the murder — "it immediately puts [Charlie] in prison. There's no statute of limitations on murder. Hence our dilemma." In Laibe's view, Ehrlich's presence at the murder scene with O.J. "would be the biggest embarrassment to the LAPD and District Attorney's Office in the last 50 years." The whistleblower says it was the public import of the case that helped motivate the release of the script to New Times. "You have to look at this story through the eyes of the victims and their families," says the source, who spoke on the condition that their name not be published. "They have a right to know, and a need to know, and there's a public-safety issue." O.J. Simpson (left) and Charles Ehrlich (seated) in court for a preliminary hearing in Las Vegas in 2007 Photo by Steve Marcus/Getty Images The story of Ehrlich's life in crime is a slippery one, but parts of it are verifiable. In the script, Charlie is busted for running a cocaine operation in Atlanta. That happened to Ehrlich in 1987. The prosecutor was a young DA named Nancy Grace. The future Court TV star wrote about Ehrlich's case in her 2005 book Objection! describing him as a "major drug distributor in the city." "When the police searched Charlie Tuna's apartment, things got even worse. They discovered that the place was wired, so he'd know if someone got in. Cops found a silencer in the closet," wrote Grace. "...This was a bad guy, and he has to be stopped from poisoning the streets of the city." Grace won a conviction; Charlie was sent to prison. In the script, Charlie says he served seven-and-a-half years of a 27-year sentence. Upon his release in the early '90s, Charlie describes meeting with a mobster pal named Joey Ippolito, who tells him he's expanding his cocaine trafficking operation and needs someone to help him do it. Charlie jumps at the chance, but there's a catch: He'll have to relocate to Los Angeles. The Script In the script, Charlie describes how he helped Ippolito move cocaine from Miami to the West Coast and facilitate sales to wealthy clientele in LA. "[D]ealing with the rich and famous moves a lot of product," Charlie narrates. The real-life Joey Ippolito — or Joey Ipp, as he was known — was indeed operating a major cocaine organization in Los Angeles at the time. In 1993 Ippolito was convicted in an FBI investigation called Operation Lasima (short for "Los Angeles Sicilian Mafia") and sentenced to ten years in prison. Yet Joey Ipp wasn't behind bars on the night of June 12, 1994. A month earlier, under mysterious circumstances, he was able to "walk away" from a federal prison camp in Pensacola, according to published reports. It's clear that Ippolito had ties to Simpson. The Boston Herald reported after the murders that the feds were aware of a relationship between Ippolito and Al Cowlings, Simpson's close friend and the driver of the white Bronco in the infamous slow-speed police chase that preceded Simpson's arrest. From the beginning, some suspected the murders may have been cocaine-related. During the trial, lead defense lawyer Johnnie Cochran posited a theory, without mentioning Ippolito by name, that Brown may have been killed by drug dealers in order to frighten her friend Faye Resnick, who was admittedly addicted to cocaine at that time. But the overwhelming DNA evidence of Simpson's own culpability in the murder made such speculation seem immaterial. In the script, Charlie meets Simpson at the Rockingham estate while working for Ippolito and the two become friends. In the narration, Charlie says Ippolito uses O.J. for "contacts" and that while Simpson isn't a drug dealer, Ippolito "takes care of him for let's just say facilitating deals." "I don't want to go there, no disrespect. I don't want to talk about the past. That's the past. I don't want to go there." tweet this The script has Charlie going to Simpson's house on June 12, 1994, to squeeze him for cocaine debts, sending the former NFL great into a rage. "If it's about paying, the complication is that bitch Faye [Resnick]," the script has Simpson saying. As his anger builds, O.J. tells Charlie the two of them are going to drive the Bronco to Nicole's condo and "putting this on her." Cut to Nicole's house: two bodies, a "pool of dark liquid," and a bloody O.J. stripping off his clothes and handing them and the knife to a "mystery man." Charlie the narrator says he'll never reveal whether he is the mystery man, saying only, "

Born Nov. 1923 in Key West, long-time Miamian, Ruth Wolkowsky Greenfield is an American concert pianist, composer and teacher who, through music, broke racial barriers and brought together black and white students, taught by black and white teachers. She moved to Paris in 1949 to study piano and there experienced a society far more racially integrated than Miami, which was in the throes of profound racial segregation ... in schools, beaches, parks, restaurants. When she returned to Miami, Ruth founded the Fine Arts Conservatory in 1951 in Miami, one of the first fully integrated schools for music, art and dance in the South. This pioneering color-blind approach was considered scandalous at the time, but provided a breath of fresh air in a toxic society. Greenfield continued to teach music for 32 years at what is today Miami Dade College, Florida's first integrated college. Concerned w urban blight in Downtown Miami in the late 70s early 80s, Ruth founded the Lunchtime Lively Arts Series that brought music and culture to downtown Miami. She has devoted her life to using music to build bridges, bringing music to performers of all races, ages and genders. Pincho — perhaps better known in South Florida by its original name, Pincho Factory — is a distinctly Miami fast casual restaurant brand that’s grown to 10 locations serving kebobs and burgers. Co-founder and CEO Otto Othman joined us on this episode to talk about his own path from marketing to restaurants, how his Palestinian and Brazilian heritage came together with time growing up in Hialeah to inform Pincho’s take on Miamian casual dining (from the Tostón burger, which replaces the bun with fried plantains, to the Fritanga Burger that takes its inspiration from Nicaraguan cuisine). Otto and Mike also discuss the challenges of the restaurant business, how Otto and his company powered through some uncertain times to take Pincho from a struggling concept to an expanding enterprise with a goal of opening 100 locations, and some of the business and hospitality philosophy that fuels Pincho. Attitude of Gratitude in November with special guest the inspirational Jessica Quesada. Check out this conversation and get inspired because Jessica knows the power of gratitude is Jessica aka Ms. Brightside. She is a native Miamian, born-and-raised in the neighborhood of Little Havana. She’s a proud mother of a 17-year-old daughter, Christina, is a loving and loyal daughter, and an engaged community activist. While she works at a Coral Gables insurance firm where she oversees the firm’s community-based initiatives and good works, you’ll find her out and about in the community doing what she does best - giving back and spreading brightness. Her story is one of passion and perseverance. At 17 she found herself pregnant and dropped out of high school to take care of Christina, who had developmental delays. She went from rising high school star, involved in TV production, athletic training, Best Buddies and Special Olympics, to high school dropout, pregnant and without a job. Having always been involved in community activities, she began volunteering in her spare time at the local Community Action Agency. There, she’d help distribute food to the homebound. She got job at a Coral Gables law office as a receptionist and obtained her GED. And in 2007, joined a fast-growing insurance firm where she currently heads the GoodWorks Committee and handles all their community-related initiatives. While she was building a beautiful life, n 2010, she was delivered another blow. Her beloved grandmother, Mima, passed away. Feeling lost and alone, she chose to take the lessons of her grandmother to live a life full of memories and no regrets. Service is what saved her. From Unity on the Bay’s “Angels Everywhere” group, to feeding the homeless meetup with Chapman Partnership, and collection drives She found her passion in giving back. It’s what she calls her “super power.” And in turn, finds herself in a stronger place to support her mother as she navigates a cancer diagnosis and her daughter who while on the autism spectrum teaches her gratitude everyday. With the love of her family, both the ones by birth and the Vixen and Intensati communities, She lets her own inner light shine even brighter. Thank you so much for being here with me, especially this week that we are about to celebrate Thanksgiving. Baseball Under the Palms: A History of Miami Minor League Baseball - The Early Years (1892-1960), tells the fascinating story of the growth of hardball from its humble beginnings, to organized play, and team participation in “outlaw leagues. This led to the eventual acceptance of a minor league baseball team in Miami by the National Association. This sometimes included affiliations with major leagues teams. Along the way, some of baseball’s most legendary names including the likes of Chico Fernandez, Pepper Martin, Satchel Paige, and Woody Smith passed through Miami, either on their way to illustrious minor or major league careers or finishing out their celebrated moments in the sun. This work is the first of its kind that brings to light the full spectrum of the history of minor league baseball in Miami. The inspiration for us writing Baseball Under the Palms, emanated from, The Forgotten Marlins: A Tribute to the 1956-1960 Original Miami Marlins. For lovers of our national pastime, we bring to light the richly varied and illustrious history of teams and leagues; once at the forefront of local baseball. In a busy, fast-paced world where Keurig machines and the like are as ubiquitous as Starbucks coffee shops, the guys over at JoJo Tea are on a mission to create a bona-fide American tea culture and show Miamian’s how to slow down, count their breaths, and experience drinking authentic tea as it was meant to be. Michael Ortiz and Tico Aran are business partners and life-long friends and JoJo Tea, tucked away in an unlikely location off of LeJeune Road in swanky Coral Gables, is where they perform their magic – offering tea flights and traditional, genuine tea ceremonies to curious locals, tea connoisseurs, and novices alike.  Although the presentation from start to finish is meticulously crafted with attention to detail from the brewing of the water to the pouring of the tea into handmade tea cups courtesy of Tico, these tea guru’s intention is not to scare anyone away with their beautiful artistry.  Instead, they want to “demystify” as Michael says on the podcast, the “intimidation factor” of drinking tea. Get ready to cleanse your pallets and make sure to “steep” yourself into a cozy chair while Michael and Tico take you on a journey into The Future of Tea.
