There are so many cracking releases at the moment, we getting as much out to you as we can in something of a festive giveaway. We dropped Michael Giacchino earlier in the week, and now we bring you Frances O'Connor and Abel Korzeniowski, who joined me to discuss Emily. Frances wrote and directed the film, while Abel provided the score. It's a fictionalised version of the life of Emily Bronte, and concentrates on her romantic relationship with the curate William Weightman - there is no evidence that such a relationship ever occurred.

This month's show features double tracks of new releases from Abel Korzeniowski and Debbie Wiseman. A salute to Jane Fonda plus Victor Young takes the Vintage spot with a 1956 spectacular. The show also included tracks by James Newton Howard, Benjamin Wallfisch. Ley also focuses on a score to the short movie GET'S GOOD LIGHT with music by Elizabeth Phillips. And of course, there’s room for a sneaky Italian track by Robby Poitevin. —— Cinematic Sound Radio is fully licensed to play music by SOCAN. Matthew Sweet marks the forthcoming release of Dominic Cooke's thriller 'The Courier', with a new score by Abel Korzeniowski, and focuses on films based on true espionage stories. Matthew features music from the new film as well as from 'Argo', 'Mata Hari - Agent H21', 'The Good Shepherd', 'Confessions of a Dangerous Mind', 'Black Book', 'Bridge of Spies', 'Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy', 'Red Joan', and cues from Gabriel Yared's and Stephane Moucha's 'The Lives of Others', which is the Classic Score of the Week.
- Spies and Typewriters 2'24” - Iron Curtain 2'23” - It has to be you 3'07” - Eyes of the State 2'08” - One last trip to Moscow 4'03” - Trenchcoats vs. KGB 3'05” - Maybe we are only two people 4'40”
Abel Korzeniowski is a composer of film, television and theatre scores. He has worked on projects such as Nocturnal Animals, Penny Dreadful and A Single Man amongst many more. We talk using the orchestra as an instrument, handmade objects, demo tracks, collaborating with Tom Ford & Madonna, creating themes, working on projects with multiple narratives, building instruments, unique experiences and expressing things in art which we can't anywhere else. On today's new episode of THE FLAGSHIP SHOW on CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO, I continue with the countdown of my favourite scores from the past ten years. And if you haven't listened to part one then I highly recommend you listen to that show before diving into this one. Again, these are my favourites. No doubt you are going to have a much different list. If you do, please share it with me on Twitter, Facebook or on cinematicsound.net. I’d love to read what you liked over the past ten years!

Lasse Enersen is a Finnish composer who studied composing in the Sibelius-Academy 2001-2004. He has also assisted film composers (Alexandre Desplat, Abel Korzeniowski, Heitor Pereira). Enersen started his film composer career working on numerous international documentary feature films, but his first fiction feature film credit came with Tuntematon Sotilas/ Unknown Soldier by Aku Louhimies, which became the biggest box office hit in Finland in 60 years. TUNTEMATON SOTILAS/ UNKNOWN SOLDIER is the story of an infantry unit's tour of duty that lasts for more than three years during the Finnish Continuation War. The film is based on the classic novel by VÄINÖ LINNA. The film is the story of four young Finnish soldiers, and their brothers-in-arms and shows how friendship, humour, and the will to live unite these men on their way to and back from war. This telling of the story demonstrates how the war changed the lives of each of the soldiers, of those on the home front, and ultimately their entire nation. In this episode, Lasse Enersen shares several behind-the-scenes stories about his composing and the recording of his original score. He talks about how his unique approach to this score was influenced by an Irish hardanger d'amore player and Finnish lullabies. He also discusses how he sought to ironically capture beauty in a story about war and how the most popular piece of his score was one he wrote in just 15 minutes. Lastly, Lasse Enersen shares the story of how he ended up having three, custom decca mics created for the recording of this score.ANNOTATED SEGMENTS - Suite from Tuntematon Sotilas02:20 - Hardanger, Nature and Lullabies06:01 - Scoring a movie of war and of men09:54 - Great beauty12:27 - A Finnish Orchestra and Decca Mics16:04 - Catharsis and FreedomSOUNDTRACKThe original soundtrack to Tuntematon Sotilas was released in October of 2017. If you haven't heard of Abel Korzeniowski I suggest you familiarize yourself with him. Abel is by far one of the richest talents in the composing scene right now. With brilliant scores like Copernicus' Star, A Single Man and now W./E. Korzeniowski (pronounced 'ah-bell korshen-yovski') not only demonstrates an impeccable ability to craft emotions but striking melodic passages as well. I feel W./E. is the best of his works so far and is a score that truly took me by surprise. We chat about his upbringing, working with Madonna as a director, his view on electronics in scores, animation scoring and much more. His unique musical voice and European sensibilities will move you. Enjoy this interview with one of my favorite composers working today.

Edith's first guest of 2017 is Juan Antonio Bayona - or JA for short - which we hope you'll agree seems a most excellent way to start the New Year. Since 2007, the Spanish director has made three critically acclaimed movies - all of which have had, in very different ways, children at the centre of the narrative. First came his superior horror flick The Orphanage, followed by The Impossible, which is about a family caught up in the 2004 tsunami and was inspired by true events. Now he brings us A Monster Calls. Based on the award winning fantasy novel by Patrick Ness, it tells the story of a boy who comes to terms with the terminal illness of his mother with the help of a humanoid tree. It stars Sigourney Weaver, Felicity Jones, Toby Kebbell, Lewis MacDougall and Liam Neeson, and is an incredibly powerful cinematic experience. As with all JA's films, A Monster Calls is scored by Fernando Velazquez, while his foray into television with Penny Dreadful saw him collaborate with Polish composer, Abel Korzeniowski. You can expect plenty of extracts from both musicians' work, as well as pieces from George Delarue and Elmer Bernstein among others.
