A price beyond the cost of a ticket. There is only one way to travel across the Wastelands: on the Trans-Siberian Express, a train as famous for its luxury as for its danger. The train is never short of passengers, eager to catch sight of Wastelands creatures more miraculous and terrifying than anything they could imagine. But on the train's last journey, something went horribly wrong, though no one seems to remember what exactly happened. Not even Zhang Weiwei, who has spent her life onboard and thought she knew all of the train's secrets. Now, the train is about to embark again, with a new set of passengers. Among them are Marya Petrovna, a grieving woman with a borrowed name; Henry Grey, a disgraced naturalist looking for redemption; and Elena, a beguiling stowaway with a powerful connection to the Wastelands itself. Weiwei knows she should report Elena, but she can't help but be drawn to her. As the girls begin a forbidden friendship, there are warning signs that the rules of the Wastelands are changing and the train might once again be imperiled. Can the passengers trust each other, as the wildness outside threatens to consume them all?https://www.instagram.com/sarah_l_brooksVOX VOMITUS: Sometimes, it's not what goes right in the writing process, it's what goes horribly wrong.Host Jennifer Anne Gordon, award-winning gothic horror novelist and Co-Host Allison Martine, award-winning contemporary romance and speculative fiction novelist have taken on the top and emerging new authors of the day, including Josh Malerman (BIRDBOX, PEARL), Paul Tremblay (THE PALLBEARERS CLUB, SURVIVOR SONG), May Cobb (MY SUMMER DARLINGS, THE HUNTING WIVES), Amanda Jayatissa (MY SWEET GIRL), Carol Goodman (THE STRANGER BEHIND YOU), Meghan Collins (THE FAMILY PLOT), and dozens more in the last year alone. Turkish Tea: An Introduction

Today on Talking Tea we're exploring a tea origin and tea culture we haven't yet visited on the show. Turkish tea isn't widely known outside of Turkey, even though Turkey is a significant tea producer and has one of the largest per capita tea consumption rates in the world. To introduce us to this unique tea and tea culture, we're joined by Aimée Lévesque, owner and founder of Le bruit de l'eau, an online and brick-and-mortar tea house located in Rimouski, Quebec. Aimée tells us about her own tea journey and the impetus for her starting a tea house in her home town of Rimouski, located on the St. Lawrence River about 500 km northeast of Montreal. And then we delve into Turkish tea. We discuss the history of tea production in Turkey, from early attempts at tea growing to the establishing of tea agriculture in the Rize region of northeastern Turkey, as well as the influence of Georgian tea and the use of assamica and sinensis cultivars in tea production. We chat about Turkish tea culture, which is ubiquitous in Turkey, the uses and benefits of the uniquely shaped Turkish tea glasses, and methods of brewing Turkish tea, especially in the traditional tea pot known as a çaydanlık. More information about Le bruit de l'eau, including the location of the teahouse, its online store and special event info, is at its website, lebruitdeleau.ca.  You can also find Le bruit de l'eau on Instagram at lebruitdeleau  and on Facebook at salondetherimouski.  The article on design and aestheics in Turkish tea glasses Aimée references in the episode is at design-and-semantics-of-form-and-movement-desform-2010-november-3. Nilgün Yalçın, the Turkish tea educator Aimée mentions, is on Instagram at @nnilgunyalcin.  The tea we're drinking in the episode is Hemşın Çayı from Çaykur.   Talking Tea is produced and hosted by Ken Cohen. In 2015, poor control of my diabetes left me legally blind for the better part of a year. The doctors predicted an 80% chance I would never see again, but I changed the way I was living and through sheer willpower beat the odds. During this time I couldn't read or write. Two things that I had been turning to for comfort since I was a small child. With the sheer amount of stress I was under, this was devastating. My wife took me by the arm, lead me into the local library, and read out titles of audiobooks to me. I chose the audiobook versions of books I had loved such as the Disc World series, Name of the Wind, Harry Potter, and more. They brought my favorite stories to life in ways I never thought possible and helped me through the darkest time of my life. Once my vision recovered, I maintained a love for audiobooks. I decided I would turn my focus from being a writer to becoming a narrator. I devised Tall Tale TV as a way to help out all the amazing authors in the writing communities I had come to love before my ordeal. I created Tall Tale TV to help aspiring authors by providing them with a promotional audiobook video. A way to showcase their skills with the written word. Samovar café! Gaylord's! Eros Cinema! Another café with view of the Gateway of India! Ahhh... This film is a light, fluffy comedy about Arun (Amol Palekar), a shy worker bee who fantasises, in charming Amélie style, about telling the beautiful (Vidya) about his love for her, but being able to do so, he reaches for help.  We also address the dodgy "stalker-with-a-crush" aspect of the film, which...hasn't aged well.  Either way, this is a charming comedy well worth a watch for the Mumbai nostalgia, the charm of its leads and the laughs.

A large, hardy, well-read and rather worn book full of writing and illustrations sits in front of the friends. They look over the fascinating book and marvel at the intermittent illustrations. The book has a solid binding, rippled pages, and is made mostly of lotus and papyrus. “I think this is the book that fell out of my bag at my Conclusion.” Flipping through the pages, Tonic sounds bewildered, “It's Graemes's journal! I didn't know Graemes kept a journal. I've seen the book on the shelf where Graemes always shoves stuff, but I never bothered to read it. It's all about traveling.”Prism points to a page and asks, quite puzzled, “What things are the worlds between?”Finding the spot in the book that the sprite is looking at, Tonic clarifies “the World's Between are the places where overlapping worlds connect. It is the ‘between' space of the worlds, like a doorway. Graemes describes the World's Between  as… well, there is only so much space… I  mean” Tonic tries again with a nose-wrinkle, “There is a lot of space Universe-wise, but the magic of life tends to cause clusters of reality. So where you have one world with enough magic for life, you get multiple realities overlapping.” Noticing the friends' confused expressions, Tonic continues “It is rather like when I put leaves in a big, open teapot.” The gnome opens the sourwood teapot on the table, and swirls the water and leaves inside by way of example. “There is plenty of water for the leaves to all spread out. But the leaves tend to cluster together” Tonic points to the settling sediment “they group up in the best spaces for tea leaves to be.”“And the universe is like that too!” Tonic continues enthusiastically. “The universe is like one big teapot, and the magic which supports life and stories settles like clusters of tea leaves!” Beaming at the demonstration, the gnome goes on. “Since there isn't room in one world (or section of teapot) for all of the realities (or tea-clusters) that settle there, the possibilities overlap, and the World's Between is how you get from one reality to another.” Proud of the metaphor, Tonic asks “Does that make sense?”Prism and Atcher think it over, exchanging looks.“Not really” Prism admits.“But we are glad you understand it!” Atcher enthuses.Reading quickly while flipping leaves furiously, Tonic motions to the journal between them, “It seems that Graemes wrote this tome while traveling, and it describes the World's Between, an astonishing array of folk, Wildlings, and the World of Myth.”Prism's eyes flash “Wait! ‘Wildlings'? Wasn't that the word your panel wrote in your Conclusion?” Atcher nods in surprise, with coppery-patina eyes shining, while taking the Bit back from Turbine, and tucking it securely into a belt pocket.Tonic agrees thoughtfully, “Yes, that's right. I think this book is just what I need. Remember when I was thinking about how much Graemes has traveled? How I wanted an adventure? But I put that aside to finish Craft Conclusions, and then there was so much to do I sort of forgot. Maybe it's time to try again. Who remembers the last time Graemes visited? And no one even knows exactly where Graemes's most recent adventure IS. I think this journal might help find our missing mentor.” Sprite, brownie, and gnome look over the journal, trying to decipher the point of it all. They peruse the journal, pausing at any story or illustration that catches their attention, and discover a kind of story to it, a story about lives and experiences. After some time, Tonic picks up the previous thought, “This journal is Graeme's story...Graeme's life. They might be the same thing.” Tonic's voice is full with a mix of respect and longing. “Graemes has met and spent time with a lot of people while traveling, and written the stories down. All these stories seem to say ‘I am here. They are here.' and illustrates that we all have stories; our lives are all stories to ourselves.”Tonic pauses, and Atcher and Prism watch their friend, who clearly has some big thoughts to express. Tonic rushes on, “I feel like my story hasn't gone anywhere. What have I learned? What narrative do I have? I want to meet some of the people written about in the journal, and learn more stories. I want to find Graemes. I want to travel and learn curious rituals and visit with uncommon folk!”Prism shifts uncomfortably, but waits for the gnome to finish.“I love my house, and my friends, my gardens and my work.” Tonic goes on “But I also want to experience what else is out there! Graemes has traveled so much, and I still live where I always have. Maybe it is time I go wander, go learn new things, meet strange situations. Graemes always said ‘Travel changes you' and I want to grow and change! I think it's time to go outside my comfortable and known.”Atcher and Prism look at each other in surprise, then Prism's stormy eyes look hard at the gnome. “That sounds like a Wanderlust.” The sprite's blue-grey hair ripples and froths with concern. “You just found your Craft! Don't you want to blend? You could create teas for the Samovar or the Curatives. Reading a book is one thing, a whole Wanderlust adventure is another thing.”Atcher's feet shift uneasily, and send the full belt jangling. “Remember those questions you asked us, before our Conclusions? About our passions and how we want to help the world? Your passion is tea. You want to help the world with healing blends and tasty steeping, don't you? Are you sure you want to leave just when you are about to start?” The brownie frets and crinkles a page of the birchbark journal.Tonic breathes in sharply, and ponders as Prism swims in sharp circles.Atcher whispers “You can't ignore a Wanderlust, though. You would lose your Drive and Spark; you would grey to dust if you did.”Prism nods decisively. “That's true, Atcher. A Wanderlust can't be ignored. Tonic, if you want to go, we support you. How can we help?”Tonic's persimmon eyes glow with determination. “Your support means a lot; let's make some journey preparations!”“We should gather knowledge, skills, and supplies” Atcher states. “Let's bring Graemes's journal, for sure. We should take maps, and good boots and coats. I will groom my Sudden Ideas, and look for Bits and Pieces.”Prism swirls with excitement, and pipes up “We will need to know where we are going and how to get there, good thinking. We will also need to find food, drink, and safety on the journey. I can train our Wind Rabbits for communication, in case we get separated. And they can cool us and brace us along!”As Tonic starts to speak, a curious thing occurs.A small magic stirs around the room, glittering in the sunlight, swirling against everyone, then bursting into light. Tonic stands up straight, patting both brown-green hair puffs nervously. “Well, that seems a propitious start to our adventure. Something magic just happened. I hope it's helpful.” Looking around the garden, Tonic asks, “Bramble, will you watch over the gardens? I don't know anyone who can care for them better!” The blackberry plant curls a tendril in the breeze. “Thank you.” Tonic responds, while packing the Mighty Teaspoon Hammer for the trip. All three friends positively fizz with energy, excited to go, though none of them yet know where. Prism muses, “I know Clover has to keep working with the Marzipandas. That pooka will have no time for a Wanderlust, but I bet Clover could check on Bramble while we're gone, and help out with your garden.”Atcher breaks off a small willow and weaves a new hair tie. “It helps to have a companion or two on a journey, so I'm glad we are all together.. Oohh! Prism, you said safety, which reminds me;    we can take my new Contraption!” the brownie dances with delight “It's a Night Tent, and can convert into a boat! But also, it sometimes turns into a squashed sandwich.”The trio begin tidying, packing, and generally preparing the house and garden. Prism sends Undertow to deliver the request about Bramble to Clover. Scones are baked, plants pruned, prunes planted, books organized, and lists made. Atcher follows a Sudden Idea to the East window and takes some measurements, announcing, “I already made a Scrubby Bubbleup to clean the cauldrons, and fixed a geode basin so it would leak for the roaming Click Fish.”The friends work and pack, and ensure everyone's homes are cared for, before deciding they are as prepared as they can be for the unknown. Looking at the seafoam satchel, peach pack, and bronze bag, Atcher wonders “Well-packed is good, but then what? How do we start our adventure? Which direction do we go? We don't have any clues…” The brownie heads home, with a head full of worries, and finds sleep difficult that night.

The Wheel of the Year turns. Soon Summer will be over, and Autumn looms crisp and crunchy on the horizon. Atcher, Prism, and Tonic visit together regularly to study and practice their skills. Clover often stops by to share stories and help, between work duties at the Bloomiery and Apis Distillery. While the friends study for their Craft Courses, and try not to fret or worry, they also talk through the day and do their best to support each other. They take turns focusing on each other's interests, and offer encouragement; sometimes they tend the gardens, or bake scones, or spin dandylion thread, or dig up stones. Always they share stories and ideas. One such early Autumn day, while they practice skills and help each other rehearse facts for the Conclusions, Tonic speaks up. “I was thinking today about how many tea flavors are out there, and that led me to thinking about the world, and how much Graemes travels. I miss Graemes coming to visit! And…maybe I want an adventure of my own.” Tonic takes a deep breath “I want to find Graemes. I want to go learn new things!”Prism's breeze blows anxiously, gusting around the scent of sea salt and ozone like a tidal wave. “We haven't even completed Professor Tome's course yet; you know Tome gets cross when anybeing leaves a Craft Course early!” “You are right. We need to finish our Craft Courses, and do our best on our Conclusions.” Tonic agrees, in a hesitant way. “Whatever they might mean to us, we started with this training and we should finish it.”Atcher adds the encouragement “Then we can decide what to do from there, after Conclusions are completed!”Over the course of days, and in between courses, the friends continue to help each other study and practice. They fall into a comfortable routine as the days slide into crispness, and Craft Conclusion studies become their sole focus. Some days they study quietly, some days are loud with games of Quiz Catch. And then:It is Conclusion day, and Tonic wakes, slowly unfurling limbs. “Time to break our fast!” The gnome calls out the window to Bramble. Sleepily sipping tea, Tonic takes a cooled cupful out to the blackberry by the door. In the tea garden, Tonic ensures all the plants have plenty of compost and a warm layer of woodchips. The gnome sings and talks while working in the garden, tending every plant. Once done, Tonic grabs the peach pack from the door, swiftly shoves in some supplies, belatedly remembers to brush the garden dirt off, and heads to Professor Tome's Conclusion. It is Conclusion Day, and Atcher wakes with a creak and a groan. The brownie sits bolt upright when a Sudden Idea lands squarely on the bed. Atcher pets the fleeting Idea, and feeds it a sketch and a notion. Dressing in a favorite set of bismuth-hued brogues, Atcher bounds to the door. Then the brownie corkscrews and comes right back in to grab the bronze bag from the bed. Turning several more times, Atcher finally remembers to oil the door hinges, break fast with a hearty stone soup, and bring the birchbark journal along. It is Conclusion Day, and Prism wakes in a fluttering mood, pushing off waves of sheets. The sprite feeds crunchy leaves to the ever-present breeze as it ruffles curtains and blows dust bunnies around the room. Next Prism washes tangled waves, checks on the clouds, and cleans up a messy current. After breaking fast with a bowl of beautifully brined bubbles and grabbing the seafoam satchel, Prism rushes out the door trailing a wake of confidence.A dizzying forever later, after Conclusions, Atcher and Prism wait outside for Tonic, trading tales of their day.“Clover was in the Cluster judging my Conclusion.” Atcher goes on, “They always need more brownie builders at the Bloomiery. – there's so much honey comb to build, flowers to tend, and amber gems to make. Plus pollen distribution, and the hive works! Clover offered me work there. Did you know I had to build two Devices, while timed, over a volcano crevice? And they didn't provide me with any Promising Possibilities! Fortunately, I had brought a Sudden Idea in my birchbark, and it worked perfectly. Alloy even asked to keep it – said they could raise it and use it near the Trellis. My final Conclusion was Builder with strong Inventing. Or was it Inventor with strong Building? The point is, I'm stoked!”Prism is ebullient, describing in detail the harrowing tasks with manticores, no moon, razorfish, and a bleeding coral. “With Rivulets and seaspray everywhere! But I tamed the Seaserpent and managed to get the Whirlpools back into the pen. I was docked points for leaving my tasks to untangle a young kelpie caught in seaweed. Professor Woolen gave me extra marks, though, for a Storm Empath.  I still have scratches where the Seaserpent thrashed me during its tantrum. I'm glad to bits that serpent's tempter finally blew over! My Tally took some time, and I was afraid I had washed out.” Prism gushes “My Conclusion was Weather with strong Tidal Tendencies!”Many more students leave, in various states of excitement, sobriety, and in all cases, sometimes nursing wounds. When Prism and Atcher find Tonic sitting in a gloomy sadness, they are worried about their wilted friend. “My Conclusion was inconclusive.” Tonic mopes. “Professor Tome said I would need to stay after to talk, after everyone was done.” Tonic's green puffs are tattered, but the gnome stirs up some courage and asks, “How did you two do?”Before Prism and Atcher can answer, Professor Tome calls Tonic over to speak. Brownie and sprite are anxious for their friend, but wait patiently while the professor is speaking. When the professor walks away, Tonic bubbles at the waiting friends, “I've been Concluded a Steeper! I can officially do Teawork, and was given an application for the Samovar!” Tonic's expression turns bitter as orange peel while continuing, “They noted my knowledge and curiosity, and wrote down ‘Wildling' with distaste. I don't know what that means, but it didn't seem good. And I'm restricted from travel! It was odd, but I think it was a book that bothered them.” Tonic pauses in recollection “ When a book fell out of my pouch, the panel started noting things in my Conclusion. They said I might ‘be a risk' so I'm not allowed to travel for three full moons. The book didn't seem to be anything special; it was just an old thing Graemes left at my house. I must have grabbed it by accident this morning.”Atcher tries to direct focus on the good and exclaims “I'm so excited to know your blends will soon be in all the Tea Houses. And an application to the Samovar?! Exclusive! I will construct a gadget to move mountains just to visit you at the Samovar.” Prism joins in with a gusty sigh “I want to see your tin design for the tea you sell at the Samovar! Do you think they will really require special Clickfish to serve the tea in bubbles of fresh and salt water?”Cheering up from the friends' enthusiasm, Tonic's mood visibly lifts. The three friends celebrate their successes with dancing and singing silly songs, and cheering each other on. While eating candied kelp and Raincakes that Prism brought, Tonic holds high some kelp, and cheers “To Conclusions and new beginnings!” They all heartily applaud. The trio of friends joke and play stories of their Conclusions, reenacting their favorite scenes. In the middle of a bite Atcher laughs and snorts a morsel of cake, and consequently coughs, sneezies, and causes much concern. The friends pat the brownie's back, offer water to drink, generally try to help. With eyes still watering, Atcher, Tonic, and Prism decide that is enough festivity for one day, and head home in bright moods. The sprite, brownie, and gnome live their lives and forget about finding Graemes for a while. The brownie visits the Bloomiery, and works on Building skills. The sprite studies up on Tides, and trains the breezes that always blow around the lake. The gnome tends the tea gardens, and sends in the application to the Samovar. Grand Plans and Wild Ideas melt away into mundane tasks. And our story could end here: the Marzipandas get fed honey and almonds, the tea plants get harvested, gears get cut, tides turn, and the friends live regular lives. But, one day, as Tonic crushes up some particularly recalcitrant Anise seeds, something different happens.
