Kelli Scarr is an American singer, composer, and multi-instrumentalist based in Kingston, NY. She is also the founder of Vera Jean Music, a pioneering record label dedicated to championing the talents of women artists over the age of 40.On May 12, 2025, she unveils Greater Mysteries, an immersive album and performance experience inspired by the ancient myth of Inanna. Born from a 2022 artist residency in Crete, and recorded in Iceland, the album invites listeners to connect with their own cycles of transformation. Transcendent piano and airy woodwinds intertwine with Scarr's otherworldly voice and the earthy pulse of the rhythm section, alongside contributions from an array of surprise musicians—creating a soundscape steeped in myth and mystery.Raised in Northern California, Scarr's musical journey began in church, eventually leading her to Berklee College of Music before settling in New York City. Over the years, she has woven her way through an eclectic range of projects, from fronting the bands Moonraker and Salt & Samovar to a significant collaboration writing, recording, and touring with Moby. Her artistry extends into film scoring, where her emotive and organic approach—favoring live musicians and improvisation—has set her apart. She earned an Emmy nomination for her score to the HBO documentary In A Dream (2008) and has composed music for dozens of films, TV shows, and commercials. Notable projects include the documentaries Advanced Style and Far Western, and the forthcoming After All (2025), for which she composed the score and contributed six original songs. As a solo artist, Scarr has released three albums—Piece (2010), Dangling Teeth (2012), and No Rush (2021)—establishing herself as a singular voice in atmospheric, deeply emotive songwriting. Her forthcoming fourth album, Greater Mysteries, marks a new creative chapter, offering music as an initiatory experience. The project will unfold through intimate preview concerts in the Hudson Valley, culminating in immersive cave performances this fall and beyond.Today we get to dive deep into Kelli's creative process in the making of Greater Mysteries from the seeds of inspiration that came from many sources such as Talk Talk by Spirit of Eden, Maureen Murdock's "The Heroine's Journey," and Dr. Catherine Svehla's mythical wisdom to the whisper from her psychic about Greece in her future. Kelli shares about the magic and mystery of her residency in Crete, how the voices of Odeya Nini and members of the Threshold Choir appeared to lend magic to the album, and we listen to three songs - "Knowing is the Call," "The Yes that Leads," and "Aphrodite" - as we meander through the myth of Inanna and how transformation happens to us..."she's not dying, she's flying free."Hudson Valley audiences will have an exclusive opportunity to preview Greater Mysteries before the rest of the world. On April 16th, Kelli is hosting Lesser Mysteries at Unicorn Bar in Kingston. The special preview event will feature an impressive lineup of local and national talent and offer attendees a unique opportunity to witness the early stages of what will become a larger, Greater Mysteries immersive cave experience scheduled for fall 2025.https://www.viewcy.com/e/lesser_mysteriesHere's Kelli's recommendation to Leah Thau's Podcast, Strangers.Today's show was engineered by Ian Seda from Radiokingston.org.Our show music is from Shana Falana!Feel free to email me, say hello: she@iwantwhatshehas.org** Please: SUBSCRIBE to the pod and leave a REVIEW wherever you are listening, it helps other users FIND IThttp://iwantwhatshehas.org/podcastITUNES | SPOTIFYITUNES: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/i-want-what-she-has/id1451648361?mt=2SPOTIFY:https://open.spotify.com/show/77pmJwS2q9vTywz7Uhiyff?si=G2eYCjLjT3KltgdfA6XXCAFollow:INSTAGRAM * https://www.instagram.com/iwantwhatshehaspodcast/FACEBOOK * https://www.facebook.com/iwantwhatshehaspodcast

Thanks to its excellent use of setups and payoffs, it also has an ending that is both surprising and inevitable."One of our most hardwired expectations is that anything that reads like the beginning of a new pattern, that is a setup, will, in fact, be a setup with a corresponding payoff." - Lisa Cron   REGISTER FOR THE 2024 SPRING WEBINAR SERIESFor access to writing templates and worksheets, and more than 70 hours of training (all for free), subscribe to Valerie's Inner Circle. To learn to read like a writer, visit Melanie's website.Follow Valerie on X, Instagram and Threads @valerie_francisFollow Melanie on X, Instagram and Facebook @MelanieHillAuthor

I'm ecstatic to sit down for this insightful conversation with Isabelle Griffith, the Founder of The School Of Somatic Leadership For Women™, on this episode of the Prosperous Empath®. Isabelle is a Somatic and Embodied Feminine Leadership coach. Her life's work is to help women break the internalized narratives that are keeping them feeling stressed, depleted, burnt out, and doubting their worth. After spending 20 years in the corporate world and having two beautiful children, she found herself severely burned out - although her seemingly perfect life “ticked” all the boxes. For Isabelle, experiencing burnout was a doorway to reconnecting with her feminine essence and discovering that a completely different way of life and leadership was possible. Many women live in their masculine energy by default, not tapping into the part of them that's cyclical instead of linear. Through our conversation, Isabelle and I uncover how to find a renewed sense of inner authority, regulate your nervous system, and, most importantly, what it means to be an embodied feminine leader. Topics: Isabelle's story of following the blueprint for the perfect life yet feeling completely broken and self-critical and how burnout was her doorway to transformation and change Recognizing where you're living in your masculine and embarking on a tender journey of reclamation of your feminine The idea that conventional leadership is portrayed in a very masculine way (a man in a suit) and what it means to become an embodied feminine leader Becoming attuned to your body's wisdom, emotions, and fluctuations, and regulating your nervous system to improve and expand your quality of being Learning how to trust yourself and the natural unfolding of life instead of being too attached to your goals and certain outcomes Episode Resources: Join us on April 15th at 12pm ET for our monthly Non-Networking Power Hour for Empath Entrepreneurs with our UNBOUNDED Mastermind Community for deep connections and meaningful support. Today, we discuss the recent studies highlighting the superior outcomes of female surgeons as well as the concept of Madeline Murdock's heroine's journey. Also, Anna's TSF TikTok ended up in a British Tabloid.First, we discuss two recent, groundbreaking, studies revealing that on average, female surgeons achieve better short-term and long-term patient outcomes compared to their male counterparts. The results revealed that patients treated by female surgeons were more likely to experience lower mortality rates and fewer complications (like infection or stroke) compared to patients treated by male surgeons. Then, we explore Madeline Murdock's Heroine's Journey, a concept inspired by Joseph Campbell's monomyth. The concept was developed by renowned author and mythologist, Maureen Murdock, as a response to the predominantly male-focused hero's journey. The heroine's journey focuses on the unique challenges and transformative experiences faced by female protagonists. The stages of the heroine's journey include:- Separation from the Feminine: the heroine embarks on a quest for self-discovery, breaking away from societal expectations and limitations.- Initiation and Descent: She faces trials, confronts her fears, and undergoes a transformative experience that leads to personal growth.- Return and Integration: the heroine integrates her newfound wisdom and strength into her life, creating positive change in herself and her community.Links:Female SurgeonsMaureen Murdock Joseph CampbellHeroine's JourneyIcelandic Board RequirementsNear Death Experience EpisodeAnna's NDE in a British TabloidThe Alien is Cake!Down Girl, by Kate ManneAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Perhaps we're lucky enough to be initiated into life's mysteries by a wise person or by a community practice. Great myths have taught us that life itself can do this if we pay attention. This perspective--often called The Hero's Journey--provides interesting ways of thinking about descriptions of spiritual growth that we get from saints like Teresa of Avila. Using lots of stories and movie clips, Dave Schmelzer walks us into this opportunity to discover again who we actually are and what makes us come to life.Mentioned on this podcast: Some resources on the Hero's Journey:The book Dave first read, and still perhaps the easiest introduction, is a book that applies this to screenwriting called: The Writer's Journey: Mythic Structure for Writers, by Christopher Vogler. The seminal book on the Heroine's Journey is Maureen Murdock's The Heroine's Journey: Woman's Quest for Wholeness.Kenny Loggins's memoir is called Still Alright. A terrific, gospel song of his that strikingly describes atonement coming from surviving the belly of the whale is "That's When I Find You" from his (regrettably) most-recent solo album, 2007's "How About Now."A book on the Examen is Sleeping with Bread: Holding what Gives You Life, by Dennis, Sheila and Matthew Linn.If you'd like to donate towards The Pocket Contemplative, you can do that at the "give" tab at journey-on.net.

If you're interested in the heroine's journey, the prevalence of the Goddess and matriarchal societies throughout human evolution or harmonizing your own internal masculine and feminine energies, this episode is for you! In today's introspective solocast, I draw on a major theme of this show: Reawakening the goddess in YOU to bring healing, spiritual connection and empowerment to all life on our endangered planet. This show exists to promote the ideal of holism as an alternative to the imbalanced and struggling system within which we live. It is a fact that our modern society emerged from a blueprint drawn up by the patriarchy that excludes the archetypal Feminine within us all– symbolized by the intuitive, the spiritual and the cyclical, regenerative nature of life. In valuing competition and exploitation above all else, humans have dissociated from the feminine half of the balanced duality of which all is born. Denying the Feminine within us has generated a cascade of worldwide issues: from the normalization of chronic stress (and the multitude of mental and physical health issues directly caused as a result) to the devastating effects of the undeniably anthropogenic seventh mass extinction. I named this show Awakening Aphrodite because I, like many, was heavily inundated into living imbalanced in the masculine polarity of myself. I begin this episode by sharing my personal experience with burnout, trauma and shutting down my Feminine, referring to The Heroine's Journey: Woman's Quest For Wholeness by Maureen Murdock, As Above So Below by Ronald S. Miller and Dr. Jean Shinoda Bolen's research for the mythology, anthropology and facts on the oppression and need for the Feminine in all aspects of life. I tell the ancient Greek tale of Persephone and relate her journey to the Jungian subconscious and the human need to acknowledge sacred rites of passage. I also discuss the rise and fall of egalitarian societies, the idea of “God” as a woman, and the symbolism of the feminine-masculine dynamic as it relates to ideas, career, creation and rediscovering the heart-connection that joins us all. Polecenia Agi do Kanonu Lektur Pracowni Dziewczyn: "Genialna przyjaciółka” - Elena Ferrante “Rozmowy z przyjaciółmi”, “Normalni ludzie” - Sally Rooney “Powrót z Bambuko” - Katarzyna Nosowska “Bezmatek” - Mira Marcinów “Co robić przed końcem świata”, “Ucieczka od bezradności” - Tomasz Stawiszyński “Bruksela. Here is what is reported that he said:When she showed it to Campbell in 1983, Campbell reportedly said, “Women don't need to make the journey. In the whole mythological journey, the woman is there. All she has to do is realize that she's the place that people are trying to get to.” - Taken from https://heroinejourneys.com/heroines-journey/ The Verbivore referenced the Fairytale Heroine's journey that has different beats to it. Here is some information of that:https://theodoragoss.com/2017/04/03/mapping-the-fairy-tale-heroines-journey/ Fable referenced the Maiden's journey and the Virgin's promise story arcs. Here is some information no those:The Maiden's Arc - https://www.helpingwritersbecomeauthors.com/archetypal-character-arcs-pt-2-the-maiden-arc/ The Virgin's Promise - https://storygrid.com/heroines-journey/The Verbivore quoted Pia Jones' Ted Talk titled “The Heroine's Journey Through Transition”. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9cgaZElnp-4 Here is that full quote:“We need heroic tools that can take us inside. By inside tools, I mean ones that can take us beneath the surface into a descent beneath what we think we know. Into our internal landscapes to give attention and attend to those mysterious, invisible yet natural processes of change that happen deep inside us. And the point of going here? To let go of the outdated, the outworn and come back with a gift - insight, hope, a dream, a new perspective, a new attitude, a stronger connection to our intuition.”The Verbivore read a paraphrase of a quote from Abraham Maslow. Here is the actual quote and the article she's reference:“I suppose it is tempting, if the only tool you have is a hammer, to treat everything as if it were a nail.” We consulted many resources while prepping for this episode, here are a few:The Heroine Journey Project - https://heroinejourneys.com/ The Heroine's Journey: Examples, Archetypes, and Infographic - https://storygrid.com/heroines-journey/ Undertaking the Heroine's Journey in Fantasy Books - https://pagesbelowvaultedsky.wordpress.com/2018/04/24/the-heroines-journey-in-fantasy-books/ The Heroine's Journey - The movie “Mulan” as a case study - https://bradleyharper.medium.com/the-heroines-journey-1551d80aa55d The Heroine's journey in Brave - http://sanhaia.weebly.com/blog/the-heroines-journey-in-brave-2012 Neo's Heroine's Journey - http://thinkspiritual.ca/the-matrix-neo-the-heroine Pia Jones' Ted Talk titled “The Heroine's Journey Through Transition”. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9cgaZElnp-4The Heroine's Journey | The Bone Circle by Bridget Finklaire - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OkDZQUbkdpU&list=PLK-VmT9palrS419UeFUMLsxFWZA6aVyxS&index=3 The Hero's Journey | The Bone Circle by Bridget Finklaire - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9LFzVLudxYo Why Screenwriters Should Embrace The Heroine's Journey - https://screencraft.org/2017/06/18/how-screenwriters-can-embrace-the-heroines-journey/ This is why the hero's journey is outdated as a creative tool for writers - https://medium.com/swlh/the-heros-journey-is-outdated-as-a-creative-tool-for-writers-d88461f3ed5f Books Mentioned:The Hero with a Thousand Faces by Joseph Campbell The Heroine's Journey: Woman's Quest for Wholeness by Maureen Murdock Women Who Run with the Wolves: Myths and Stories of the Wild Woman Archetype by Clarissa Pinkola Estés 45 Master Characters: Mythic Models for Creating Original Characters, Revised Edition by Victoria Lynn Schmidt The Hunger Games by Suzanne CollinsCatching Fire by Suzanne Collins Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins The Divergent Trilogy by Veronica RothThe Shadow and Bone Trilogy Boxed Set: Shadow and Bone, Siege and Storm, Ruin and Rising by Leigh BardugoSix of Crows by Leigh BardugoCrooked Kingdom by Leigh BardugoMovies Mentioned:Mulan (Animated) - Directed by Barry Cook and Tony BancroftBrave (Animated) - Directed by Mark Andrews and Brenda ChapmanWonder Woman - Directed by Patty JenkinsThe Matrix Trilogy - Directed by The WachowskisDivergent - Directed by Neil Burger and Robert SchwentkeMusic from: https://filmmusic.io 'Friendly day' by Kevin MacLeod (https://incompetech.com) Licence: CC BY (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/)

“Hang on,” we can hear you saying, “isn't this a romance novel podcast?” It absolutely is, and that's why we're dropping a very special episode about the character who is the most perfect on-screen version of a romance hero that ever there was: Captain of the AFC Richmond team, Roy Kent. Added bonus, we're joined by Jen's brother Erik to talk sports stories (and check in on Jürgen Klopp).Spoilers abound, so if you haven't watched Season 1, do that first! Our next read along is Cat Sebastian's wonderful Unmasked by the Marquess. Get it at Amazon, Apple Books, B&N, Kobo, or Bookshop.org. Thank you, as always, for listening! Please follow us on your favorite podcasting app, and if you are up for leaving a rating or review there, we would be very grateful! Show NotesTed Lasso season two starts this Friday, and the reviews look great. Also, if you haven't read this GQ profile of Jason Sudeikis, you are missing out.In season 2, we talked about Cinnamon Roll heroes, as compared to Alpha heroes. Grunting is definitely an alpha hero trait. We love Hannah Waddingham (Rebecca) and Juno Temple (Keeley) and that's all we have to say about that. Apparently, there are ways to watch Apple TV Plus shows even if you don't have an Apple Device. Who knew! You, too, can bake Ted's biscuits. USAians have a different relationship with Soccer than the rest of the world. Perhaps you need a primer on the Premier League, promotion and relegation, the average age of Premier League players, and just how popular is Premier League football really is.Fated Mates has a favorite team, it's Liverpool, and it's basically because of our favorite stern brunch daddy TM, Jürgen Klopp. Stern Brunch Daddy(tm) is the invention of Andie J. Christopher, friend of the pod, who has a new book out this week! Richmond is a fake team, but that won't stop you from buying gear to show your team spirit. This year, London was home to six Premier League teams: Arsenal, Chelsea, Crystal Palace, Fulham, Tottenham, and West Ham United.Yes, Jen hates it when young characters make ancient pop culture references in romances, but in this case, Indiana Jones is appropriate for people our age! Go ahead and write I Love You on your eyelids! More about the story of how Brett Goldstein got the part of Roy Kent. Jen's sister-in-law Janine writes for TV and she's kind of a big deal! Susan Elizabeth Philips was a guest a few weeks ago, and she talked about the trope of the grizzled veteran at the end of his career and how it's a hallmark of the Chicago Stars series.Jen mentioned a series of soccer romances--it's the Atlanta Skyline series by Rebecca Crowley. You know, Roy Kent really should have tried to get that Rolex back. In a New York Times article about adapting romance to TV and film, Outlander showrunner Matthew B. Roberts “found that voice-over sequences left actors standing around with nothing to play against. Interior monologue has to become exterior dialogue. ‘That's our biggest challenge always.'“It's witched” was a joke from our very first episode, in case you're into that sort of thing. That German word (phrase?) is sturm und drang and it means turmoil. No topping from the bottom.Maureen Murdock's Heroine's Journey is an archetype that values community building over individualism, we like the latest iteration from Gail Carriger.Rupert Mannion is the woooooorst. That darts scene is awesome though, and if you want to read a contemporary romance set in a pub that includes darts playing, Sarah wrote one!Other sports TV shows and movies we mentioned: Friday Night Lights, Sports Night, The League, Bull Durham, and Major League. Maybe you didn't know that the character of Ted Lasso originated in a series of TV commercials for NBC. Bill Lawrence was a producer for Spin City and Scrubs, which were other funny workplace comedies. In the past few weeks, Italy won the Euro 2020 and Argentina won the Copa America. And the Olympics football competition will be interesting since men's teams are limited to players under 23 years of age. FYI, the US Soccer Federation is pretty awful. For Generation X and Millenials, soccer was a big deal. If you are interested in a family friendly sports outing, maybe your city has a professional soccer team! The Chicago Fire is awesome, and New York has two teams! The 1994 World Cup was played in the USA, and Sarah remembered the name of defender Alexi Lalas. Now he's a commentator and we would like him to do better. So there are trick plays in football and . . . well, football. The last few decades of television have focused on the antihero, and lots of people wonder if that didn't help create our recent political moment. It's hard to beat the fan experience of singing You'll Never Walk Alone at Anfield; but Erik recommends this 2019 video of the team and fans singing after Liverpool defeated Barcelona. The version in the last episode of season 1 of Ted Lasso is this one by Marcus Mumford. Follow AFC Richmond, Ted Lasso, Hannah Waddingham and Brett Goldstein on Twitter. Jürgen Klopp does not have Twitter because "he is a grown man with a job."You can preorder signed copies of Bombshell from Word in Brooklyn, buttons and stickers from Best Friend Kelly, and Fated Mates merch from Jordan Dene.

Mind Body Musings Podcast: Feminine Embodiment | Surrender & Trust | Relationships | Limiting Beliefs | Authenticity

*Episode 331:* Most of us know about the Hero's Journey, the narrative template wherein the "hero" undergoes a series of patterns by which he actually becomes the hero. But what about the heroine? The feminine Heroine's Journey obviously doesn't follow the same pattern and has its own nuance and particulars. In special episode, Madelyn presents one of her full sessions from Sisu Society, outlining how to consider your own truth and story through the lens of the Heroine's Journey as described by authors Maureen Murdock and Camy Tang. *COACHING* : Discover more at https://maddymoon.com/coaching *SISU SOCIETY* : Join here: https://maddymoon.com/sisu-society *FEMININE SPIRIT SCHOOL* : Join here: https://maddymoon.com/feminine-spirit *Show Notes* : * This episode is a special full class from Sisu Society. * Use special podcast code MINDBODYMUSINGS for 10% off: maddymoon.com/sisu-society ( http://maddymoon.com/sisu-society ) * This is about being brilliantly resilient in your feminine. * Come back to your most pure, original, effortless state, which is being loved and being open. * You have probably been living The Heroine's Journey unconsciously your entire life. * The Hero's Journey is about what a man will endure through his life to become his own hero. * Joseph Campbell said The Hero's Journey takes men to the place that women have been all along. * Author Maureen Murdock disagrees with this somewhat and believes there's more to it. Get the book The Heroine's Journey here - https://amzn.to/2YZPXA7 * The Hero's Journey is about "things that happen," while The Heroine's Journey is more about transformation, disembodying and associating. * Women's leadership and women's sexuality are two prominent fronts in the modern Heroine's Journey. * Write or consider your own story as fiction. * This allows you to get distance from it, as well as explore concepts and areas you might avoid or not give yourself permission to explore in nonfictional consideration, such as memoir. * Madelyn then walks through Camy Tang's Heroine's Journey worksheet - available here: maddymoon.com/camy-tang-worksheet ( https://app.redcircle.com/shows/7af94ca8-e07c-452b-9d6c-7b9993db5cef/ep/maddymoon.com/camy-tang-worksheet ) * *Number one: the illusion of the perfect world.* * Think of a time before a big change - what was something you needed, that you didn't know at the time? * What archetype were you inhabiting at the time? * *Number two: separation from the feminine, something that "jarringly separates you from the voice in your womb."* * Not necessarily traumatic or bad, but something that changed your path - the call to adventure. * What is the thing that happened to you? And how did you lose what you cared about, what you thought you needed to have? * Don't judge yourself - this isn't about guilt or correction. Focus on what it's bringing up for you. * *Number three: the point of no return, and the preparation of the journey.* * The identification of the masculine. * When did you separate from the feminine and how did you identify with the masculine? * *Number four: the descent - the journey into the underworld.* * This is the part where you'll experience the most trials. * *Number five: the illusion of success.* * Life is full of exquisite expansion and contraction, and going into contraction isn't failure or a less important part than the expansion or success. * *Number six: death*. * All is lost, the black moment. * All is taken, the ultimate bathroom-floor breakdown, divine opening. * This is the moment where you are face-to-face with the ultimate fork in the road or inflection point. * *Number seven: surrender.* * You've surrendered, and your "spiritual team" rallies around you, and you come back into the feminine. * *Number eight: healing with the mother, rebirth, and healing with the wounded masculine.* * Now coming into the space of conscious masculinity in rhythm with the feminine. * Now it's about coming back into the world. * *Number nine: return to the perfect world, master of two worlds, freedom to live, final reward, integration.* * Think about your relationship with the feminine at different stages compared to it now. * Be present even in the chaos. Mind Body Musings Podcast: Feminine Embodiment | Surrender & Trust | Relationships | Limiting Beliefs | Authenticity

Episode 319: All too often we frame our work with masculine/feminine in the context of conflict, suggesting that one has to "win" to achieve peace. The reality is that it's absolutely necessary to strengthen your inner masculine, in order to support your feminine and move forward as a whole integrated being. In this episode, Madelyn discusses ways to strengthen your inner masculine, why it's important, the symbiotic roles masculine and feminine play in our growth and challenges, and some of the root causes of conflict between them. This originally aired as an episode of Georgie Collinson's Anxiety Reset Podcast. Show Notes: The feminine/masculine discussion that's happening on social media is often missing the mark. It's not about glorifying softness, surrender, going with the flow. It's about embracing wild chaotic energies. Both men and women have both been raised in this wounded masculine society, and it's damaged men and women (and their respective feminine/masculine) differently. David Deida is a strong foundation of Madelyn's masculine/feminine work: The Way of the Superior Man - https://amzn.to/2SASai9 Blue Truth - https://amzn.to/36Baujn Dear Lover - https://amzn.to/3jF9H4r Wild Nights - https://amzn.to/2GNYHmI The masculine is the part that doesn't and hasn't changed. It's the riverbed that the river of the feminine flows through. The masculine drive for peace wants to be free of burden. The feminine drive for peace is self-acceptance. It's crucial to put our masculine to the forefront even when working with the feminine: "Warriors with a strong spine and a soft heart." The Heroine's Journey by Maureen Murdock - https://amzn.to/3d5FokZ Women's arc or journey includes shoving away the feminine, "rejecting their mother." Therefore she gravitates to the father, and so the father determines a lot of how she evaluates her success as she gets older. The Heroine's Journey describes the female experience of a psycho-spiritual journey. The author (Maureen Murdock) developed this model based on her work with women in therapy. She describes the modern woman's search for wholeness in a society in which she has been defined according to masculine values. Drawing upon cultural myths and fairy tales, ancient symbols and goddesses, and the dreams of contemporary women, Murdock illustrates the need for—and the reality of—feminine values in Western culture today. This piece of work is now relevant in our culture more than ever as our society is heavily influenced by the west.

Mindfulness and meditation began as aspects of various religions, but are now used more broadly because of the evidence that focused breathing and meditation can ease physical and emotional stress.  Mindfulness is not just sitting still and closing your eyes, as this is not relaxing for some people, but rather it is a way to train our attention and clear our thoughts.  This is training our minds to be quiet and stay in the present moment as well as training our bodies to be aware of the sensations going on around us.  A focused mind is a happy mind, so it is important for people young and old to learn to be mindful. Children have less attachment to memories of trauma early in their lives, so it is important for us to teach them specific practices of mindfulness such as breathing, to give them the tools to cope with their emotions and external stimuli as they get older.  Breathing is the first thing we receive after birth and it is the last thing we lose before death, and though we usually don’t even realize that we are breathing, it is a tool that we can use to our advantage throughout our lives. As part of your children’s bedtime routine, have them lay on their backs and put a stuffed animal on their bellies and then practice focused breathing by having them “take the stuffed animal for a ride” as their bellies go up and down as they breathe. Another good way to teach children mindfulness is using books such as “Moody Cow Meditates” or “Spinning Inward.” I also recommend that you look into the work of Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn at the Center for Mindfulness at the University of Massachusetts, Dr. Susan Kaiser’s video about how our anxious minds are like a shaken snow globe, and Dr. Nazanin Moali’s Sexology podcast.   To connect with Psic.
